A weekly car boot sale, one of less than a handful that is still reliably taking place, has up to 200 cars/sellers. The stadium is just a few minutes walk from the Red LUAS line stop and numerous bus stops. For traders the Car Boot Sale opens at 06:30 for buyers from 08:00. Record Store Day is a celebration of independent Record Stores and the Record Spot in Fade Street is running a street party with live music, DJs, talks and an art installation. The event will be inside and outside of the shop and in case it rains, there is a weatherproof performance area.

The County Council Market (CoCo) in Marlay Park is taking place every Saturday and Sunday. You will find a wide range of products. There will be food to eat there and food to cook at home but also crafts and arts and books and lots more.

This is a 1-day long contemporary music festival curated by cellist Adrian Mantu for 5 – 10 year olds and their parents and friends.

In each two hour slot (10:00-12:00, 13:00-15:00, 16:00-18:00) there will be 6 performances in 6 different locations in the building. The overall theme is water and each performance connects with the music of Georg Friedrich Händel. Children will get worksheets and have opportunities to respond to the music performed.

This seminar marks the 100th anniversary of the German gas attack at Hulluch in northern France during the First World War. The 16th (Irish) Division suffered almost 2,000 casualties in the attack and hundreds of them died.

A free (donation based) 1916 Rising Walking Tour will take place every Saturday and every Wednesday from now until the end of June. It is a 3-hour long tour that will start at City Hall, bring you to Dublin Castle, Liberty Hall, the GPO and Moore Street and will end at the Garden of Remembrance and on the way you will also learn about all the other locations where the battle happened.

The DIT Music Marathon showcases the talented students of DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama in a day-long marathon of musical performances featuring the range of instrumental ensembles at the Conservatory, as well as concerto soloists, chamber music and piano performances. The exhibition “Field Test – Radical Adventures in Future Farming” (11 Mar – 05 Jun 2016) in the Science Gallery is exploring how farming will look like in the future and what new developments will change farming so that we can deal with the global food challenges.

From Farm Cyborgs (for example a Virtual Reality environment for chicken so that they can think they are free range), via odd, unique and forward looking foods (e.g. insects for improving your protein intake); growth houses for your home; very different seeds (e.g. beans that taste like beef) to the “LOCI Food Lab” (outside near the entrance to the Science Gallery) where you can get a customised snack, the exhibition has a lot of interesting exhibits that revealing, intriguing or surprising.

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, FIELD TEST is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but I would say that chilren from 10 years of age can understand the whole exhibition if they get some additional explanations and there are even some exhibits that would work for younger children.

When you go to see the exhibition, get help from the Science Gallery mediators! They are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service!

A 1916 Commemoration Event for the working class people of the era is taking place.

It will start with an event for the O’Tooles GAA at Croke Park at 18:0, followed by a march by the St. Laurence O’Tooles Pipe Band down to St. Laurence O’Tooles church on Seville Place, where a remembrance mass will be held at 19:30.

Afterwards there will be a Irish traditional music night in the local Sheriff Y.C. club house, entry is free and food is provided free of charge too (traditional Dublin food such as white coddle & ribs), with music played throughout the evening by a Dublin ballad group.

Unlike the three branches of the National Museum, the National Print Museum is normally not free, but every Sunday there is a free public tour for the next few weeks. Every visit begins with a short audio-visual presentation where the audience can observe active retired printers providing practical demonstrations of machines from the Museum’s collection.

“The NGI and the revolutionary period” with Leah Benson, Archivist, National Gallery of Ireland is the Sunday lecture in the National Gallery. It is part of a free lecture series throughout the month of April looking at the theme of ‘Visualising Commemoration’, in association with the current exhibition, James Stephens, the National Gallery of Ireland and the 1916 Rising.

Organist David Leigh is presenting a series of recitals to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the death of Max Reger on the 1902 Willis organ of St Patrick’s Cathedral. Each recital presents a major Reger work alongside pieces that either influenced it or were influenced by it.

Well known and respected journalist Dr Robert Fisk will be in Dublin to talk about “Life after ISIS”.

Robert Fisk is one of the most most celebrated international journalist in recent decades, being a seven times recipient of the British International Journalist of the Year. He has been Middle East correspondent of The Independent for over twenty years, is an Arabic speaker based in Beirut and he has reported from many armed conflicts around the world, including Northern Ireland, Kuwait, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and the Lebanon. He is one of a few Western journalists who have interviewed Osama bin Laden (three times).

The event is being hosted by the UCD Philosophy Society and the UCD Law Society.

The Trinity Centre for Asian Studies (TCAS) is inviting to to an Asian Studies Public Lecture entitled “Learning from Talleyrand: Yoshida Shigeru and postwar Japanese foreign policy” by Dr Declan Downey (University College Dublin).

As the great French statesman Talleyrand had saved France from dismemberment through his diplomatic strategies at the Congress of Vienna in 1815, Japan’s postwar premier Yoshida Shigeru had ensured his country’s economic survival and expansion, as well as its international political rehabilitation in his negotiations with the USA that culminated in the Peace Treaty of San Francisco in 1951.

This lecture will explore the influence of European Classical Diplomacy on Yoshida’s professional formation and on his legacy in the emergence of Japan as a major world player.

To celebrate Miguel de Cervantes, who died 400 years ago this month, the Instituto Cervantes is inviting to a multi-lingual reading of the short story “Death’s Husband” by Spanish author J.M. Pumarega.

The story will be read in its original Spanish alongside translations in English, Irish, Basque, Catalan and Galician. A series of short videos showing the books’ creation and illustration process by illustrator and graphic designer Cristina del Moral will be screened during the reading.

It is a 3-hour long tour that will start at City Hall, bring you to Dublin Castle, Liberty Hall, the GPO and Moore Street and will end at the Garden of Remembrance and on the way you will also learn about all the other locations where the battle happened.

The book launch for “Ireland 1518: Archduke Ferdinand’s Visit to Kinsale and the Dürer Connection” will take place with author Hiram Morgan

On 06 June 1518 a storm forced Archduke Ferdinand (known to Spanish history as Infante Fernando) and his party of some 400 people, sailing from Spain to Flanders, to seek shelter in Kinsale. They stayed four days and enjoyed the town’s hospitality before continuing on the voyage. One of the travellers was Laurent Vital who kept a diary of the visit and which is published now for the first time.

“A Celebration of Choral Music” is a concert featuring the DIT Chamber Choir and the DIT Choral Society. The event celebrates the 75th Anniversary of DIT Cathal Brugha Street.

In the context of the Easter Rising commemorations and the recent ‘Waking the Feminists’ debates, this symposium explores the theme “An Artist’s Vision for Ireland” and guest speakers are Deirdre Kinahan, playwright and Dr Eric Weitz, Associate Professor of Drama and Theatre Studies at Trinity College Dublin.

“Poets, dreamers, visionaries and women were amongst those who advocated or fought for Irish freedom in the Easter Rising of 1916. Today women are still campaigning for full equal rights and this symposium asks what would an artist’s vision for Ireland today look like, one that is based on a genuine need for social justice, gender equality and human rights and is sustainable, ethical and inclusive, enabling ‘creativity to flow’.”

Rising is a major photographic exhibition that showcases the National Library’s rich imagery of the events and locations of 1916. It includes images from the Keogh Collection, the Independent Newspapers (Ireland) Collection and newly digitised photographs from the De Valera Collection, and various 1916 albums.

“Civilians and the 1916 Rising” is a talk by John Dorney (editor of the history website The Irish Story)

He will discuss combatants’ treatment of civilians during the Rising as well as martial law, food shortages and the danger of stray bullets.

Twice every year, the Central Library together with the Local Enterprise Office in Dublin City are running a series of six free Business Lectures for everybody who wants to start or grow a business. The lectures will cover subjects such as the characteristics needed to run and fund your business. Digital marketing strategies and writing business plans will also be included.

A Fun Pub Quiz takes place in Brady’s in Terenure on Thurs. The quiz will be on every Thursday night in the Lounge at Brady’s. Keith McLoughlin is the Quiz Master.

Every Tuesday and Thursday the International Bar invites to a Jazz night in the Lounge.

Gerry Kearns (Professor, Human Geography, Maynooth University, Ireland) will present a lecture on his research on the cultural dynamics of memory in Ireland.

He considers the place of objects, commodification, institutions and texts as resources for postcolonial memory. He discusses the Turner-prize-winning work of Duncan Campbell, (It for others, 2013), the reflections of Jonathan Swift upon madness and the complexity of engaging with the Proclamation of 1916.

In the context of the upcoming project “A Fair Land” at the IMMA, artist Renzo Martens discusses his practice with Adam Sutherland (Grizedale Arts) and Sarah Glennie (Director, IMMA).

Renzo Martens was born in the Netherlands in 1973, studied Political Sciences in Nijmegen and Visual Arts in Ghent and Amsterdam. In 2010 he founded the Institute for Human Activities (IHA) “which aims to create gentrification effects in the Congolese rain forest through the establishment of an international art centre. IHA collaborates with local plantation workers and seeks to acknowledge the economic mechanisms through which art has the greatest impact on social reality. This stems from Martens research and documentary series that highlights the exploitation of underprivileged people by media industries and cultural producers, including Martens himself.”

“Convergent Territories” by Rob Kesseler is the “Microscopy Society of Ireland Rory Comerford Memorial Lecture 2016”. It will take place in the Science Gallery.

For the past fifteen years Rob Kesseler has collaborated with scientists across a range of areas, plant morphologists, cell biologists, bacteriologists and geneticists to explore the living world at a microscopic level.

This lecture will reveal some of the convergent territories and histories that unite the arts and sciences and underpin his work, from the Micrographia of Robert Hooke to plant geneticists generating 3D forms to reveal flower development.

NASA’s International Space Apps Challenge, is one of the biggest hackathons in the world. Teams of engineers, coders, makers, designers, scientists, and product developers work together to develop answers to some of the biggest challenges on Earth and in space, using NASA’s open data resources.

This year’s challenges include problems from the areas of 3D printing, air quality, games, aviation, drones, space fashion, design, storytelling, space history, data science and virtual reality.

And the prize? Five teams selected from the Global hackathon (across all locations) will be invited to a NASA rocket launch.

The hackathon event in Dublin called “Space Apps Dublin 2016” and will take place from Fri 22 – Sun 24 April. It will start on Friday evening with an introduction, a brainstorming and some social time and then on Saturday from 09:00-18:00 and on Sunday from 09:00-17:00 the solutions will be developped and presented on Sunday afternoon.

The winning team of Space Apps Dublin will advance to the final round of the global awards.
