Hi all!
The biggest event of the year (at least for some) is just around the corner. The 1916 commemorations is a big thing in this year’s calendar, but I know also that some of you have enough of it by now because it is just everywhere. Well, it was a pretty big event in the history of Ireland, so maybe just go with it and enjoy the historic significance of the events.
[ad]
The military parade on Sunday is maybe a little odd for a Western European country in 2016, but the events on Monday do look promising and a lot better than we could have expected at the end of last year. After all it is a difficult commemoration for many. My opinion is that it should be a happy event. A celebration of what has been achieved as the final outcome. But many people did get killed on the way, soldiers and civilians, and there was certainly no happiness in that. That’s where the challenge is coming from, but it seems RTE (as the main organiser) of all Easter Monday event, did a good job in creating a bridge between the two sides. Lots of people are expected to come to the City Centre and I suggest that you take part and judge for yourself.
Again I have to do a two-stage posting of this Dublin Event Guide this week. A early version is going out now on the website and on the smart phone app and when more events are added, the e-magazine will be updated on both platform and the final version will be sent by e-mail to all subscribers. The information in the brackets below will be changed to “final” when it is completed:
[This is the FINAL version of this week’s Dublin Event Guide.]
Less than a week and we are still EUR 60 away from being able to pay this month’s bills. :-O I know it is annoying for some that I need to talk about money and donations so much, but without your donations, I will have to pay the money from my pocket. So your help is needed and appreciated!!
And here is my weekly appeal: Please don’t forget that there are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with every week: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 190 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for webhosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail dublineventguide@gmail.com and I can suggest other ways. I am also looking for some corporate sponsors, if you know someone, send them my way. :-)
And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 63,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! :-) Imagine if everyone just got ONE additional person to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). That would be an immediate increase by a few thousand subscribers. Can you help? To get people to subscribe send them to www.dublineventguide.com.
————————–
More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 60,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, LivingSocial, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
Today’s Feel Good Slot is a quote by John Jantsch, American author, speaker and marketing consultant, author of Duct Tape Marketing, The Referral Engine and The Commitment Engine. He said
The secret to success is doing the stuff other people won’t do & doing it for a really long time.
And he is right that to have success you need to do something that is different than what most people do.

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
Last week Kathrin L, Ornaigh G, Krisztian V-D and Stephen L were so wonderful to support the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. Thanks a lot! Please keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills. Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

The main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.
All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This week I will take the Easter Monday “Easter Rising” events in the City Centre as my main pick. There is also the Dublin Flea Market on again and the Mad Hatter Tea Party for the kids and the Farmleigh House Easter events …and a whole range of other events. :-)
Have a great Easter!

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon LivingSocial
When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:
HMV | | Vodafone | Expedia | Lastminute.com | Hotels.com
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Reflecting the Rising – Huge Easter Rising Event
The two main events this weekend are the State Ceremony and Military Parade on Easter Sunday and then the even more interesting and exciting event “Reflecting the Rising” that was organised by the RTE and extents to more than 300 events on Easter Monday. Many talks and space limited indoor events are booked out (and I urged you to book for the last two weeks already), but there are still many other free (outdoor) events happening that make it well worth to come into the City Centre.
Be aware, though, that the Luas drivers are not helping you to enjoy this weekend as they are striking on both days. Dublin Bus is running additional buses that will hopefully compensate. Many roads in the city centre are also closed and even Dublin Bike stands are closed (which MIGHT make sense during the actual parade on Sunday, but definitely doesn’t make sense on Easter Monday).
Maps that include the traffic management restrictions can be found here: www.ireland.ie/easter-maps
And the full event programme for Monday is here www.rte.ie/1916 and all free events on Sunday and many on Monday are also listed in this Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events).

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Visions of Skellig – Life on the Atlantic Edge
17 March – 03 April
National Botanic Gardens, Botanic Road, Glasnevin, Dublin 9
This exhibition of photographs by Mark O’Callaghan will offer a new perspectives on the unique World Heritage Site of Skellig Michael, 12km off the Kerry coast. For centuries, the Skellig rocks have represented the ends of the earth and the extremes of human settlement and endurance. Though today the monastic cells and lighthouses stand empty, the rocks are teeming with bird and plant life amidst the ruins and isolation, and remain a magnetic presence on the horizon. While living and working as a guide on Skellig during the summer of 2014, Mark captured many rarely seen sights, magnificent sunsets and early morning shots.

FIELD TEST – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 26 Mar
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
The exhibition “Field Test – Radical Adventures in Future Farming” (11 Mar – 05 Jun 2016) in the Science Gallery is exploring how farming will look like in the future and what new developments will change farming so that we can deal with the global food challenges.
From Farm Cyborgs (for example a Virtual Reality environment for chicken so that they can think they are free range), via odd, unique and forward looking foods (e.g. insects for improving your protein intake); growth houses for your home; very different seeds (e.g. beans that taste like beef) to the “LOCI Food Lab” (outside near the entrance to the Science Gallery) where you can get a customised snack, the exhibition has a lot of interesting exhibits that revealing, intriguing or surprising.
Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, FIELD TEST is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but I would say that chilren from 10 years of age can understand the whole exhibition if they get some additional explanations and there are even some exhibits that would work for younger children.
When you go to see the exhibition, get help from the Science Gallery mediators! They are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service!
The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00. Admission is free.

Co-Motion is an event where you share your soul-mending, uplifting music with a stranger. Wintertime –> Summertime
08:00, Sun 27 Mar
Dublin (various locations)
Last night, Summertime kicked in again and it means that the clock skipped an hour at 01:00, so you have to set the clock one hour FORWARD. It is amazing how many people are still confused by this. It is FORWARD in Spring!
BUT don’t change he clock on your smartphone or computer!! They are configured in most cases to do that automatically, so if you changed the time again, you would be an hour fast. It is always a good idea to keep an “old” clock as a reference time OR to check online. If you just type “time now” into Google, you will be helped!
And just for your information: Summertime will end this year on 30 October.

Easter Sunday State Commemoration Ceremony and Parade
10:00 – 15:00, Sun 27 Mar
Dublin (various locations)
The main State event for the Easter Rising commemoration is a ceremony at the GPO and a military parade through the City.
The parade starts at 10:00 and St. Stephen’s Green, arrives at 12:00 at the GPO for the official ceremony and then frinishes at 15:00 at Bolton Street.
The parade route is St. Stephen’s Green, Cuffe Street, Kevin Street, Patrick Street, Thomas Street, Parliament Street, Dame Street, Westmoreland Street, O’Connell Street, North Frederick Street, Dorset Street, Bolton Street. A map of the route is here.
The Irish Defence Forces have 7500 active members and at this parade 3,500 (!!) members of the Defence Forces, the Emergency Services and Army veterans will take part together with 78 vehicles, 17 aircraft and 5 horses. This is what you will see.
Unlike the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which packs people 20 deep in a much too short stretch of road, this parade should be long enough (4.5km) so that everyone who is interested will be able to see it.
————–
At 12:00 the official ceremony will take place at the GPO: The ceremony will begin with the reading of the 1916 proclamation by a Defence Forces officer. Then the President will lay a wreath on behalf of the people of Ireland. This will be followed by a minute’s silence for all those who died. The Irish Flag on top of the GPO will then be raised to full mast and the ceremony will finish with the playing of the National Anthem.
You are invited to come to the parade route and to witness the ceremony, but you will NOT be able to get near the GPO. Only approx. 6000 invited guests (incl. 5000 relatives) will get into O’Connell Street. For the rest of us There will be large public viewing screens along the parade route and the event will be broadcast live on RTÉ One and RTÉ.ie. And there will be “overflow areas” at St. Stephen’s Green, Merrion Square, Trinity College, King’s Inn (Broadstone) and Smithfield will have large viewing screens. (Can’t really see them packed with people for this event, but you never know.)
————–
The opinions about the military parade are divided: Soldiers marching on the streets of a capital, bringing their tanks etc and having airforce fly overs is more an image that reminds us of Cold War Russia, not of a modern European country. On the other hand, the Irish Armed Forces see their roots in the Irish Volunteers of 1916 and therefore were with about 1000 people the strongest force on the Irish side, where approx. 1250 men and women fought against the British army.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 27 Mar
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.
There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Urban Farming in Cuba – Talk
19:00, Wed 30 Mar
LASC Office, Arts and Business Campus, 40 Drumcondra Road Lower, Drumcondra, Dublin 9
The Latin America Solidarity Centre (LASC) has organised an event called “Urban Farming and Food Sovereignty in Cuba”.
“Cuba is renowned as one of the leading countries in the world in the area of urban organic farming and food sovereignty. Earlier this year a group of Irish community gardeners travelled to Cuba to learn about urban farming and permaculture practices and creating communication networks with established organic famers there. Participants included members of Dublin Community Growers, the Community Garden Network, and Leitrim ’s Organic Centre.
This talk is an opportunity for the participants to share their first-hand experience of how food sovereignty is being put into practice in Cuba. The group will share lessons on specific issues such as growing methods, soil fertility management, and organic farming in urban settings, and discuss how they may be applied to the Irish context. Given the increasing importance of food supply and debates around agribusiness approaches, this talk is highly relevant, and will be of interest to anyone with a passion for growing.”
Admission is free.

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!
Luas Driver Strike – Outrageous or heroic?
The Luas drivers have decided that the compromise offer negotiated with the help of the Workplace Relations Commission is not acceptable by them and that they will continue with their threatened strike action and will not work on Easter Sunday and Easter Monday, the two main days of 1916 Commemorations.
Because they stand up for their rights, the trade union supporters and left organisations have them declared to be heroes and someone even dared comparing their action with the workers that were involved in the 1913 lockout in Dublin.
The vast majority, however, is outraged about their demands and the fact that the upset the Easter Rising commemorations for 10s of thousands of people.
We all have a certain opinion about the Luas drivers and most would agree that they are not in the slightest oppressed and also are not working under terrible conditions, so a comparison to 193 conditions is laughable. But they do have the right to ask for more money. However, do they have a right to FORCE any arbitrary claim through and at the same time upset all the people that pay their salary? Well, that is where the opinions differ.
Surprisingly the Anti Austerity Alliance – People Before Profit issued a very strong statement in support of the striking Luas drivers. Why is it surprising? Well, Richard Boyd-Barrett, the leader of PBP tells us that he is only taking EUR 29,000 of his TD salary and he seems to imply that a) that is enough and b) all TDs should be happy with that. (Unfortunately, he still keeps the rest of the 92k salary, just not for his personal use, but he gives it to his party. So we (i.e. the State) don’t really benefit from his frugality.)
Now, if 29k should be enough for everyone and considering that the Luas drivers currently get between 32,000 and 42,000 plus bonus for an average of less than 36 hours per week, is the AAA-PBP support for the drivers then not a little surprising?
By the way, I said that the Luas drivers have a right to ask for more money and they also have a right to strike if they are not happy and reject an offer if they think it is not fair. But based on the law of human society “The liberty of one citizen ends where the liberty of another citizen begins.” their strike tactics is highly questionable.

If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself. This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
