Hi all!

And a new record! 235 events at the time of publishing the first version. Again I will make it available on the website and on the smartphone app first, but there is still a long list of events that I will add before the final version will be sent by e-mail to all subscribers. You can check here if you have the final edition or a preliminary edition:
This edition is the FINAL edition and no more events will be added!!

[ad]

Now I better send this out quickly!! Have a great weekend!

And please don’t forget that there are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with every week: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others!

And secondly: without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 60,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! The goals are MUCH bigger than that! :-) Imagine if everyone just got ONE additional person to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). That would be an immediate increase by a few thousand subscribers. Can you help?

For donations go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and the link to subscribe is www.dublineventguide.com.

————————–

Here is the explanation regarding donations: To send the Dublin Event Guide and for domain names and for web hosting, I have a monthly bill of EUR 190 to cover. This is not for me, but all that money goes directly to external service providers. I am working approx. 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week and don’t make any cent, that’s why I ask you to help with the cost if you can. If you can spare EUR 1 per month (that’s just 25 cent per edition!!) please donate EUR 12 for the year (or more if you can …or even less if you can’t). You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail dublineventguide@gmail.com and I can suggest other ways. I am also looking for some corporate sponsors as well, if you know someone, send them my way. :-)

And please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent (but donations are very welcome!) for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 60,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, LivingSocial, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

Today’s Feel Good Slot brings you an inspirational video clip with Kate Winslet. It is an interview with Kate Winslet at the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) about her career, who she dedicates the win to and how she got the role in “Steve Jobs” for which she won the prize.

If you have 8 minutes, watch the whole interview, if you have less time, watch the two key messages in there:

The most important one is from 06:04-07:12 where Kate Winslet advises all (young) women not to listen to people that put you down! Instead believe in yourself and go for what you want!

And the second one is about how she got the role. It is from 01:37-03:08 and she explains that despite her being a big star, things do not fall in her lap, but even she has to do whatever it takes to reach her goals.

Watch it here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ncz19d-yaU

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

Last week Geraldine G and Therese O’R were so wonderful to support the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. Thanks a lot! Please keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

EventbriteThe main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This weekend is your last chance to see the Trauma exhibition in the Science Gallery. Don’t miss it!

The Bernard Shaw Flea Market is happening on two days with different stalls on each day. And also the Brocante Market and a new Rumble in the Jumble Market will both take place at Newmarket Square on Sunday.

Many of the other events are 1916 talks again, but the AONTAS Adult Learner’s Festival is also running this week.

Lots to do! ;-)

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:

HMV | | Vodafone |
Expedia
| Lastminute.com | Hotels.com

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

AONTAS Adult Learners’ Festival

From 22-27 February the 10th Adult Learners’ Festival will take place in Ireland. More than 60 events will take place in Dublin City and Dublin South and North will have another 80 events. That’s a LOT!!

Make sure you check all three areas as there might be some unexpected categorisation (e.g. a free tour in St. Patrick’s Cathedral is not mentioned in “Dublin City” but in “Dublin South”).

All events are free. Some are mentioned in this Dublin Event Guide edition, but the AONTAS directory is very good, so I won’t double the complete list. Go to www.adultlearnersfestival.com/yourarea/county.html#dublincity to find all events in Dublin City and if you continue to scroll down, you will also find the other two areas on Dublin.

Brown Thomas to be converted into a pub?

You could think that Brown Thomas saw the light and realised that expensive clothes etc are not the future, when you find out that they bought a pub licence for their premises in Grafton Street.

But all passionate (and affluent) Brown Thomas customers can relax! There is a different reason for their purchase of the pub license from a Limerick Pub and its transfer to Dublin (Odd shenanigans go on with pub licences in Ireland!) The reason is that they plan to add a pub on the third floor to the Brown Thomas experience.

Why? Well, the Irish Times is super politically correct in their article about this development and talk about a new service to help “those who who had to wait around while their partners and spouses finished shopping.” Let’s call a spade a spade: The main target group is MEN who are waiting for their partners to finish the shopping and Brown Thomas has realised that if you fill the men up with alcohol, you probably can get more money from their female partners.

It will be interesting to see if they will go for low low Wetherspoon prices to make it super easy to hold the guys or if they will stay true to their reputation and even beat the outrageous prices in “The Temple Bar” and “Oliver St John Gogarty’s”. ;-)

Dublin City Good Citizen Awards

Every year, Dublin City rewards some of the special people in Dublin who make this city an extraordinary place to live.
The Dublin City Good Citizen Awards celebrates the contributions made to Dublin city by people who give their time selflessly to their communities, who look out for friends and neighbours, who lead community groups and who motivate and inspire others to create a smarter, more caring city.
Good Citizens are often ordinary people, so no example will be too small to be worthy of a nomination and everyone who is nominated will receive an acknowledgement letter regardless of whether or not they are shortlisted.

If you want to nominate someone, you can do that by filling in an online form at www.dublincity.ie/goodcitizen before 18 March 2016.

Dog-friendly MVP pub will let dogs in again

The MVP Pub in Clanbrassil Street was a dog-friendly pub until they were told by the HSE that they are not allowed to let dogs in anymore because they also sell food in the pub.

It is an odd rule, because in other countries, where dogs are allowed into restaurants or pubs, there are not more dog-caused illnesses and also guide dogs are allowed into restaurants and last time we checked, they were still dogs even if they had a special purpose. So it doesn’t really make sense to forbid dog owners to bring their four legged friend into the pub while they are out for a walk. The rule nevertheless exists in Ireland.

However, it seems that Bodytonic, who own the pub, didn’t get a formal written explanation why dogs are not allowed and so they made the decision to let dogs back in. It might only be temporarily depending on the HSE’s next steps, but enjoy it while it lasts.

The story was reported here www.dailyedge.ie/dublin-pub-mvp-2609041-Feb2016/

Opportunities

The former “Opportunities” section is now Eventbrite’s section to give recommendations, tips & tricks on how to organise and run good events. Eventbrite is the main sponsor of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and their support is very much appreciated! All information in this section is supplied by Eventbrite.

== EVENTBRITE RECOMMENDS ==

In the next few weeks this section will be filled with information and help from Eventbrite that focuses on organisers of events. So if you are an event organiser for big or small events, watch this space!

And you can find lots of events at www.eventbrite.ie … or download the Eventbrite app to find events around you.

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Graphic Explorations in Print – Exhibition

10 Dec – February 2016

National Print Museum, Beggars Bush, Haddington Road, Dublin 4

“Graphic Explorations in Print – 32 years of student work from Distillers Press, NCAD” is a showcase of work produced by graphic design students at Distillers Press from 1983 until present day.

Distillers Press, previously known as the graphic print workshop, had its origin at the National College of Art and Design’s original location on Kildare Street. In the 1980s when the Department of Visual Communication moved to the college’s new location on Thomas Street, the facility was expanded.

The Press now has a number of operational letterpress proofing presses and a large collection of metal and wooden type in a wide variety of fonts. It is used by students on a daily basis for creative projects and also as a teaching tool to introduce the fundamentals of typography. Ireland’s first practice-based Masters in the visual arts was undertaken at the Press in 1986; samples of this work can be viewed in the exhibition.

TRAUMA – Science Gallery Exhibition

12:00 – 18:00, Sat 20 Feb

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

This is the second last day to see this exhibition. Don’t miss it!!

How does trauma affect the brain, the body, the national psyche or all three? How do buildings, bodies, artworks and stories record the traumas of our past? How do we bounce back after a trauma?

The exhibition “Trauma – Built to Break” (20 Nov – 21 Feb) in the Science Gallery is exploring the biological, psychological and societal aspects of trauma. As a sudden, violent, stressful event, trauma can be short-lived or long-lasting with impacts that range from deeply personal to universal.

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, TRAUMA is suitable for all ages and while younger children might need some further explanation, there are lots of exhibits that can easily explained.

The Science Gallery mediators are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service!

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.
Admission is free.

TRAUMA – Science Gallery Exhibition

12:00 – 18:00, Sun 21 Feb

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

This is the very last day of this exhibition! Don’t miss it!

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. The Hungarian Calendar: A Hypothesis of a Time Slip – Talk

19:30, Wed 24 Feb

Trinity Long Room Hub, Fellows’ Square, Trinity College, Dublin 2

The Trinity Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies at TCD is inviting to a talk by Dr Zoltán Skoda. He will talk about “The Hungarian Calendar: A Hypothesis of a Time Slip of 200 Years in the Chronology”.

The Hungarian Calendar is a chronological system which maintains that Julius Caesar introduced the Julian calendar in the year 154 CE. The officially accepted and universally propagated date for the introduction of the Julian calendar is the year of 45 BC, which differs by 198 years from the proposed date (CE 154) of the Hungarian Calendar.
Only one explanation is possible for this 198 year difference: we have either a hidden surplus history of 198 years or 198 years of our history have been invented. A special surprise for the Irish Calendar will be revealed.

Admission seems to be free. Some more information is available in this PDF file.

Political & Social Life In Dublin In 1916 – Talk Series

Unitarian Church, 112 St. Stephen’s Green West, Dublin 2

“Political & Social Life In Dublin In 1916” is the first talk in a series of four lunchtime talks. Historian and journalist Padraig Yeates will give the talk.

Dublin was deeply divided by religion, politics and class in 1916. Divisions brought sharply to the surface in the 1913 Lockout were further exacerbated by the impact of the First World War. This talk will look at how the war changed life and politics in the capital across the social classes in the lead up to the Easter Rising, affecting areas as diverse as municipal politics, living conditions, public entertainment and crime. Padraig Yeates is the author of “Lockout: Dublin 1913” and the trilogy “A City in Wartime: Dublin 1914-1918”; “A City in Turmoil: Dublin 1919-1921” and “City in Civil War: Dublin 1921-1924”.

Later he worked for the British consular service and his reports into human rights abuses by the Belgian government in the Congo earned him the Order of Saint Michael and Saint George in 1905. He was even knighted for his report on the abuse of rubber industry workers in Peru.
But he became disillusioned with the activities of the British Empire and therefore fostered relations with Germany during World War I and on Good Friday 1916 he was arrested at Banna Strand, County Kerry after landing from a German submarine.

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!

Election 2016: Who should I vote for?

This is a really really difficult question at this election! At previous elections, it was a lot easier it seems. Since four parties were involved in the previous two governments and all couldn’t really convince anybody about their ability to run Ireland in a positive and successful way, many automatically look to the remaining alternatives. However the serious lack of experience, extremist views and mad election promises that will disappear as soon as the election is over don’t make this an easy process either.

So what should you do? My advise would be to read the party programme and to compare their views with yours. But don’t leave it there because the programme might be full of empty promises. Also check out the background of the 2-3 leading party figures and listen to some of their speeches (on Youtube you can find a lot!) or at least read some articles about them. Ask yourself if you feel they represent you. Are you ok with their political background or what they did and said In the past? Do they have any black spots that make you uneasy? If there is anything that disturbs you, stay away from their party!
Why not just focus on the party leader? Because he/she could be replaced after the elections!

Will you then know who to vote for? No!! But hopefully you will be able to use the – totally unreliable and highly risky – method of “gut feeling” to judge who you mistrust the LEAST.

Most people realise in this election that there is not one party that really convinces them, so the you have to go with the one that will hopefully disappoint you the least. Oh, and if your parents voted for a certain party and your grand parents voted for the same part, don’t follow them blindly! The parties have changed substantially and you better know what they are saying today.

Maybe www.smartvote.ie will help you to decide, but I find its focus too narrow on some of the parties’ statements. Also check www.whichcandidate.ie/ and you will probably have a different result! Compare them! It’s interesting!

—————

Last week I wrote about Independents here and appealed to you NOT to vote for any Independent candidate. This is not because they are all bad apples (but some are!!), instead it is because they are a) unpredictable, b) not accountable to anybody once they were voted in and c) they will never come close to having any significant influence.

I got some interesting reactions after last week. Some agreed, some disagreed and that is all fine. Only one person was so disturbed by my opinion that she felt she had to unsubscribe. Her point was that Independents are vital to have dissenting voices in the Dail. Unfortunately my dissenting voice was, as she described it “stomach turning”. I guess it is always easier to demand “dissenting opinions” that agree with you than “dissenting opinions” that disagree with you.

But my point about the total lack of relevance of Independent candidates was confirmed at ALL TV debates before the election. Not a single Independent candidate was represented! However parties like the Green Party who have no TD in the Dail at the moment or Renua, who don’t have one because they are new and might just about get one in with a LOT of luck, they were invited to the TV debates.

If you didn’t get a chance to read my opinion piece last week, you can find it here: www.joergsteegmueller.com/2016/02/13/stay-away-from-independents/

And finally I would like to repeat what the person who found my opinion “stomach turning” unfortunately ignored: I am a foreigner and therefore have no clue in the eyes of some Irish people. So, what ever I write is nonsense anyway. ;-)
