Hi all!
I can’t believe it! This is not going to end well! The Dublin Event Guide got even bigger than last week. 228 events are in it this week and I am not surprised that it takes me AGES to get it finished. But something needs to be done. Gazillions of 1916 talks, lots of live music events (some might not be worth a mention, but I don’t know which aren’t). What would you do? Drop some events? Based on what criteria? I need your input. Send it to dublineventguide@gmail.com Thanks!!
[ad]
Now I better send this out quickly!! Have a great weekend!
And please don’t forget that there are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with every week: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others!
And secondly: without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 60,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! The goals are MUCH bigger than that! :-) Imagine if everyone just got ONE additional person to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). That would be an immediate increase by a few thousand subscribers. Can you help?
For donations go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and the link to subscribe is www.dublineventguide.com.
————————–
Here is the explanation regarding donations: To send the Dublin Event Guide and for domain names and for web hosting, I have a monthly bill of EUR 190 to cover. This is not for me, but all that money goes directly to external service providers. I am working approx. 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week and don’t make any cent, that’s why I ask you to help with the cost if you can. If you can spare EUR 1 per month (that’s just 25 cent per edition!!) please donate EUR 12 for the year (or more if you can …or even less if you can’t). You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail dublineventguide@gmail.com and I can suggest other ways. I am also looking for some corporate sponsors as well, if you know someone, send them my way. :-)
And please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent (but donations are very welcome!) for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 60,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, LivingSocial, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
Today’s feel good is a quote from Bob Marley. Not for everybody the person you would turn to to give advise, but let’s listen to him first:
If you don’t start somewhere, you’re gonna go nowhere.
So what is it that you KNOW you have to do and still are postponing? Procrastination is a cool word, but not the smartest behaviour pattern. Get going! You know you want to AND you know it is worth it!

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
Last week Melissa C, Michael D, Tony B, Sandra Sch, Bill G, Catherine OS and Tim O’N were so wonderful to support the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. Thanks a lot! Please keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.
All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
For me the main events this week are the 2nd Saturday Market in the Chocolate Factory on Saturday and the Fusion Sunday World Culture Market and the Smithfield Valentines Market Fair. But there are LOTS of other cool events in this week’s list of over 220 events! Have a look!

You provide the prize for the competition and the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) runs the competition for you. It couldn’t be simpler.

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository
Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon
LivingSocial
When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:
HMV | | Vodafone |
Expedia | Lastminute.com | Hotels.com
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Who should I vote??
The General Election on 26 February is coming closer and closer and many many people are still completely confused and unsure who to vote for. Many people who are undecided see three bigger parties who have absolutely not convinced in the last few years (Fine Gael, Fianna Fail and Labour) and then there are extremists, nutcases and lunatics who seem to live in the clouds when you read their political pamphlets and their outrageous promises.
So where can you get help? In previous years. there were websites that analysed the parties and matched it with your preferences. Unfortunately reformcard.com doesn’t exist anymore and ballotbox.ie is not been being updated anymore, but there is a new site available at www.smartvote.ie that is happy to help.
Try it out, but take the result with a grain of salt. I was told my opinions are closely aligned with a party that I would NEVER vote for. Maybe the questions that Smartvote asks are not comprehensive enough OR maybe I am just all messed up in the head. ;-) Try it out anyway, MAYBE it will help!

#AnyonesBrother
Caoilte O’Broin died in January due to his mental health problems and it could have been anyone’s brother, sister or loved one.
On Thursday evening a silent, peaceful, non-political vigil took place outside Government Buildings, when friends and family of Caoilte came together to appeal to the government to make changes to the Mental Health Service.
Caoilte’s family and he himself had nobody to turn to, because certain circumstances meant that all official bodies in the health service field could excuse themselves from providing help and support. Admittedly, they were difficult circumstances, but we nevertheless need to find a way to provide support the affected person and his/her family.
Find out more about this week’s and future events and about the appeal to the government here:

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Graphic Explorations in Print – Exhibition
10 Dec – February 2016
National Print Museum, Beggars Bush, Haddington Road, Dublin 4
“Graphic Explorations in Print – 32 years of student work from Distillers Press, NCAD” is a showcase of work produced by graphic design students at Distillers Press from 1983 until present day.
Distillers Press, previously known as the graphic print workshop, had its origin at the National College of Art and Design’s original location on Kildare Street. In the 1980s when the Department of Visual Communication moved to the college’s new location on Thomas Street, the facility was expanded.
The Press now has a number of operational letterpress proofing presses and a large collection of metal and wooden type in a wide variety of fonts. It is used by students on a daily basis for creative projects and also as a teaching tool to introduce the fundamentals of typography. Ireland’s first practice-based Masters in the visual arts was undertaken at the Press in 1986; samples of this work can be viewed in the exhibition.

TRAUMA – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 13 Feb
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
This is the second last weekend for “Trauma”. Go, if you haven’t visited it yet:
How does trauma affect the brain, the body, the national psyche or all three? How do buildings, bodies, artworks and stories record the traumas of our past? How do we bounce back after a trauma?
The exhibition “Trauma – Built to Break” (20 Nov – 21 Feb) in the Science Gallery is exploring the biological, psychological and societal aspects of trauma. As a sudden, violent, stressful event, trauma can be short-lived or long-lasting with impacts that range from deeply personal to universal.
Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, TRAUMA is suitable for all ages and while younger children might need some further explanation, there are lots of exhibits that can easily explained.
The Science Gallery mediators are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service!
The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.
Admission is free.

Save Dun Laoghaire Harbour – Meeting
15:00, Sat 13 Feb
Royal Marine Hotel, Marine Road, Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin
Dun Laoghaire is economically in Dublin’s shadow and its harbour is fledgling.
When they also lost the regular ferry service to Holyhead because it didn’t make sense for Stena Lines to run a ferry to Dublin Harbour and to Dun Laoghaire, they were trying to turn things around with big cruise liners.
But again Dun Laoghaire is competing with Dublin and if I was a cruise liner passenger, I would prefer to go for a day trip to Dublin and NOT to Dun Laoghaire.
The solution was to turn the ferry port into a port for massive cruise liners, but that costs a HUGE amount of money and it is doubtful that it is a good business decision.
Dun Laoghaire’s councillors voted against the re-development of the harbour and a public consultation was also very much in favour of not adapting to cruise liners. But now the Country Manager in Dun Laoghaire is trying to overturn the decision and force the harbour re-development.
The Save our Harbour initiative invites to a Public Meeting on Saturday afternoon.

Bob Doyle: Life of a local revolutionary – Talk
16:00, Sat 13 Feb
The Cobblestone, 77 North King Street, Smithfield, Dublin 7
Born in a tenement on North King Street on 12 February 1916, Bob Doyle experienced dire poverty and became interested in left wing politics from a young age. He became politically active in the early 1930s joining the IRA after suffering a serious eye injury during street fights with fascists in Dublin. He later joined the Republican Congress and went to support the Spanish Republic, following the fascist coup in 1936. He made his way there in 1937, aged 21, and was captured by Italian fascists in 1938 at the battle of Belchite, a small town in Aragon in the north east of the Spanish state. He was held in the Burgos concentration camp, and was released almost a year later in a prisoner exchange deal. At the outbreak of World War II he enlisted in the British merchant navy and after the war his family settled in London.
In 2006 he published his biography “Brigadista – An Irishman’s Fight Against Fascism”. Bob died in January 2009 aged 92.

Co-Motion – Share your uplifting music
13:00, Sun 14 Feb
St. Stephen’s Green, Dublin 2
Co-Motion is a shared listening experience organised by Alt Events in association with the First Fortnight Mental Health Festival.
I can’t explain it better than they do:
“Music is the universal salve that can soothe a wounded ego, calm a blind fury, or mend a broken heart. We all have that short list of songs that immediately tap into our core and stablize us from within. Co-Motion creates a unique opportunity to share those personal songs with a stranger.
Each participant will need to make a short playlist (around 3 or 4 should do it) of the songs they turn to when in need of a pick-me-up. Upon arrival you’ll be assigned a walking partner and a pair of headphone splitters before being sent off on a stroll. This is a chance to share a moving musical experience.
The theme for this month is “Can’t Buy Me Love” – so keep that in mind when choosing your playlist.
Admission is free. Meet at the Stephen’s Green end of Grafton Street 13:00.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 14 Feb
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.
There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Valentine’s Day Guided Walk: Budding Romance – National Botanic Gardens
14:30, Sun 14 Feb
National Botanic Gardens, Botanic Road, Glasnevin, Dublin 9
Please note. it is NOT spring yet as Met Eireann keeps telling us again and again and you would expect the Botanic Gardens to have know when the seasons start and end, but they keep insisting on telling us about spring nevertheless:
“Come along for a bracing and romantic stroll in the Gardens as we observe the first signs of spring. Snowdrops herald the arrival of the new season while some of the fragrant winter flowers linger on. Inside the glasshouses exotic blooms evoke warmer climes. An alternative Valentine’s Day activity to delight the senses.”

The Yes Men are Revolting – Film Screening

“For the last 20 years, notorious activists the Yes Men have staged outrageous and hilarious hoaxes to draw international attention to corporate crimes against humanity and the environment. Armed with nothing but thrift-store suits and a lack of shame, these iconoclastic revolutionaries lie their way into business events and government functions to expose the dangers of letting greed run our world. 1911 Chinese Revolution in Context of 1916 Easter Rising
18:30, Tue 16 Feb
Joly Lecture Theatre, Hamilton Building, Trinity College Dublin, Dublin 2
In late 1911, the last dynasty of China, the Qing, which had ruled the Chinese empire since 1644, was toppled in a few short months in a relatively peaceful revolution. This ended 2,000 years of dynastic rule and ushered in a transformative period of republican governance, nationalism and anti-imperialism and the rise of communism. In this centenary year of the Easter Rising of 1916, Dr Isabella Jackson (Assistant Professor in Chinese History in the Department of History and the Trinity Centre for Asian Studies at Trinity College Dublin) will reflect on the same revolutionary period in China, revealing similarities and differences between the two anti-imperial revolutionary movements.
Admission is free, but booking is required via the website below.

The History of the Manifesto as a literary form – Talk
19:00, Tue 16 Feb
dlr LexIcon – Library and Cultural Centre, Haigh Terrace, Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin
“The History of the Manifesto as a literary form” is a talk by Nathan O’Donnell.
He will look at manifestos, who were originally a tool for outlining alternative religious and political programmes and were then in the 20th century adopted by artistic and political radicals across Europe, including the 1916 rebels. The Manifesto became a statement of hope.
This talk will explore some of the utopian visions outlined in the great manifestos, but will also consider the limits and logistics involved in producing them and the ways in which so many of them failed.
Admission is free and no booking required.

“Not just a Rebel: the importance of art, literature and drama to Volunteers during their imprisonment 1916-23” is a talk by Dr. Anne Marie McInerney.
She will discuss the poems, paintings, decorative crosses and knitted crafts that were created by internees during their imprisonment in the aftermath of the Rising. Writing and artwork were important to internees as it was an easy outlet for recreation in the confined environment of a prison camp. The talk will examine the works of both well-known and lesser known internees and discuss how these artworks embodied the humanity of individual prisoners.

It is screened in connection with the curernt Science Gallery exhibition TRAUMA and expresses the trauma that soldiers experienced who came back from fighting in Word War I.

It features military medical footage, sourced from the Wellcome Library, that was filmed at two English hospitals during World War I. It documents the anguish of some of the patients: symptoms of so-called ‘war neurosis’ suffered by returning soldiers – now referred to as PTSD.

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!
Stay away from Independents! – Election Special
I am a foreigner and therefore – so I have been told occasionally – I have no clue. Keep that in mind when you read this opinion piece. :-)
Today, I am appealing to you NOT to vote for any independent politicians in the next General Election. If you want your voice to be heard, you have to decide for one of the parties, despite the fact that it is quite difficult. A vote for an Independent is a wasted vote, because at best, your Independent TD will never be more than a solo-runner that will have no significant impact and influence. At worst, however, he/she is a mad nutcase that is only interested in his/her own private agenda.
Why are Independents unreliable? Because you don’t know what they are thinking, who or what influences them and because they are a loose cannon. Look at Mick Wallace for example. The people that voted for him have to be aware that he will NEVER be at a position of influence in the Dail (and that is probably a very good thing for the rest of us!), but you also don’t know how he will vote on an issue that will come up in 2 years time and – different to parties – he won’t have to discuss his opinion or his voting behaviour with anybody.
Or take Michael Lowry, a seriously dodgy character who I wouldn’t trust to look after just EUR 50 of my own money. Can he be trusted to partake in running the country?
So what do you get by voting for an Independent? Nothing! Your representative has no influence or impact, might be a mad-cap looney and the only thing you achieve is to protest against the parties. Yes, that at times is a good feeling, BUT keep in mind that it will take many long years until you have the opportunity again to vote. Protest is a short term emotional decision, but in two years time you are still stuck with the nutcase that you voted just to protest against the parties.
So vote for the person that you would trust to look after your own hard earned EUR 5000 and vote for the party that is most aligned with your values and believes!!
Having read all that, I just want to remind you that – as a foreigner – I am not meant to have any clue about what I am talking about, but what if I did have a point!? ;-)
