Metamorphosis is a project that engages artists from visual art, film, architecture and music composition in collaboration with academic researchers from the Humanities and Sciences.

There will be a multimedia pop-up exhibition from 01-06 February on Smithfield Square in regenerated shipping containers. The exhibition will showcase five mixed media artworks that communicate text based and experimental research through art.

The Spring Festival Fair is the main Family Event of the Chinese New Year Festival celebrations this year. Witness and sample the traditional Chinese form of Folk Art called Sugar painting with Sugar Painting Artist Mr Liu Binbin from China, who will create two dimensional figures. using just hot, liquid sugar. The result is a snack that is popular among children and selecting a figure is normally determined by spinning the arrow on a wheel

You can participate in hands-on activities from paper-cutting, calligraphy, kite, lantern and red envelope (Huan Bao) making workshops or you can watch martial arts and dance demos.

A Fashion Show of Chinese traditional dress (Qipao) will showcase silk and embroidery with thick laces trimmed at the collar, sleeves and edges. (Saturday+Sunday 15:00-16:00)

How does trauma affect the brain, the body, the national psyche or all three? How do buildings, bodies, artworks and stories record the traumas of our past? How do we bounce back after a trauma?

The exhibition “Trauma – Built to Break” (20 Nov – 21 Feb) in the Science Gallery is exploring the biological, psychological and societal aspects of trauma. As a sudden, violent, stressful event, trauma can be short-lived or long-lasting with impacts that range from deeply personal to universal.

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, TRAUMA is suitable for all ages and while younger children might need some further explanation, there are lots of exhibits that can easily explained.

The Science Gallery mediators are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service!

Comedy Showhouse is a new festival of Irish comedy from 31 Jan-07 Feb. There will be eight comedy shows in the Project Arts Centre (Admission: EUR 5-10), featuring Sean Hughes, Deirdre O’Kane, Andrew Maxwell, Colm O’Regan, Foil, Arms & Hog, and many more. The Sundays at Noon Concert Series continues in the Sculpture Gallery at the Hugh Lane Gallery. This series of free (mainly classical) concerts continues to present the best of Irish and International music and musicians. Concerts run from September to June.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

“The Night Before Larry Got Stretched” is a Traditional Irish Singing Session, which takes place on the first Sunday of every month. At this month’s event, special guest is Kilian O’Flanagan.

Billy Treacy & The Ha’Penny Heads are playing Ballads, Folk, Trad and Classic Country every Sunday. Featuring Guitar, Mandolin, Fiddle and Banjo.

Every Sunday (except at Bank Holiday weekends), the Ragtime, Roots and Country Blues Band “Cool Hand Dukes” play in the Porterhouse near Grafton Street.

The Dublin Blues Cartel will be in Whelan’s again and will perform mostly a version of New Orleans R’n’B with a classic rock twist, sandwiched with swing, Rock’n’Roll, Soul, Funk, Blues and rap of all eras. Admission is free.

A few years ago, there was one or two places in town were you could watch the Super Bowl, the American Football final, live, then a few more switched their TVs on, but kicked people out of the pub when the game was only half over because they hadn’t checked how long an American Football Game will take.

All this has changed and in 2016, the list of pubs that is showing the game is longer than your arm. I still wouldn’t trust that all will show it until the end, so you better ask, but it got big!

So, no reason to avoid pubs? Well, you can also watch it on BBC2 where it will be broadcast from 23:00-03:30. Chicken Wings made in your oven and beer from the off-licence. Not the worst alternative. ;-)

Pearse Street Library is celebrating the Chinese New Year with a “Colours and Motifs of Earthly Delights Workshop”.

For generations, Jaffa has been a city divided by two communities that continue to grow increasingly apart.

Over a ten-week period, Pierre Dulaine, four-time ballroom dancing world champion teaches Jewish and Palestinian Israeli children to dance and compete together. The film explores the complex stories of three children, all of whom who are forced to confront issues of identity, segregation, and racial prejudice as they dance with their enemy. We watch Pierre transform their lives, confirming his belief that dance can overcome hatred and provide the first steps towards real change.

The Trinity Centre for Asian Studies invites to the public lecture “Chinese music and its cultural tradition: An introduction” by Adrian Tien (Sam Lam Associate Professor in Chinese Studies, Trinity Centre for Asian Studies).

“This introductory lecture on Chinese music and its cultural traditions focuses on Chinese music as it had been practised before its westernisation. Chinese music is very much an integral aspect of the Chinese culture, with important connections with other genres and domains, including Chinese language. The February public meeting of the Dublin Cycling Campaign will explore a very different topic – the cycling adventures of Ciaran Hussey and Laura McMorrow through Mongolia and other exotic places as recounted by themselves!

Following two years in a densely populated Japanese city they decided to head to Mongolia to begin a journey home by bike. Over the course of the next four and a half months they cycled through 12 countries, past camels in Mongolia, Ladas in Russia, stray dogs in Romania and all the while we wondering what they would find around the next bend.”

After the talk there will be a chance to mingle over a drink or coffee and find out the latest news on cycling in Dublin.

The talk “Lesser Known Facts about 1916” by Mick O’Farrell, author of “50 Things You Didn’t Know about 1916” will reveal some gems of information that will surprise and intrigue.

Even those who know a great deal about the Easter Rising may not know that there were temporary ceasefires in the St. Stephens Green area to allow the park attendants to feed the Green’s ducks. Few know that the first shots of the Rising were actually fired near Portlaoise and not in Dublin, or that both sides issued receipts: the Rebels for food, the British for handcuffs.

Music Hall and its Irish evocations acted as popular cultural expression and entertainment through the years leading up to Irish Independence. This talk examines music hall performance as speaking of and to everyday experience and as an integral aspect of the theatrical landscape and culture of 1916 Dublin. It also reimagines and re-examines the social, historical and cultural contexts and tensions leading up to and through the turbulent events of the Rising.

Five Holocaust survivors who are living in Ireland recount their stories in this documentary. The screenings will be in the Central Library Activities Room. For some reason lists the time for the screenings as 12:00-14:00, but the documentary is only 45 minutes long.- Maybe they are screening it twice per day?

The Roots Band “Brand New Switcharoo” will perform in the Harbour Bar. Admission is free.

The King Kong Club is a weekly music game-show in the Mercantile. Each week 6-7 bands/solo artists play three songs each. At the end of all the performances a clap-off with the King Kong Club Clap-o-Meter takes place and the winner goes through to a semi-final and it all culminates after six months of competition with The Grand Final, held in front of a panel of celebrity judges.

“Let’s Talk and Walk” are historical walking tours in Dublin that are organised by Dublin City. All walks are free, have a duration of 1.5-2hr and are lead by a historian.

The 1916 Walk and Talk series will visit the main areas of action of the 1916 Rising, both in the city centre and the suburbs and the full programme is available in PDF format here.

The first walk will take place on Thursday. It is called “Easter Rising 1916: From Dublin Castle via St Stephen’s Green to Trinity”.

Starting point is outside the main entrance of Dublin Castle at the junction of Cork Hill and Castle Street and it will finish at Trinity College.

“A rare time for death in Ireland: Seán O’Casey and the Easter Rising” is the title of a talk on Thursday.

Seán O’Casey is considered one of Ireland’s greatest playwrights. His classic play “The Plough and the Stars” (set during the 1916 Rising) caused a riot when performed in the Abbey Theatre ninety years ago. What inspired O’Casey’s work? What role had he played in the organisations taking part in the insurrection? And how did these historic events help launch his literary career? Hear also how he narrowly avoided a sniper’s bullet and was imprisoned by British soldiers during Easter week, trapped in a community under siege.

A public tour of the exhibition “WWI Ireland: Exploring the Irish Experience” will take place on the second Thursday of each month during 2016. The tour will show case material from the library’s collections and will focus on the Irish experience of this total war.

Grace Weir (artist), Dr Shane Bergin (physicist, TCD) and Dr Sean Enda Power, (philosopher, UCC) explore concepts of time and recurrence, the paradoxical nature of light and the making of a photograph in this lecture-performance, held in the lecture theatre where Erwin Schrödinger in 1943 gave a public series of lectures called “What is Life?”. The talk is in association with the School of Physics, Trinity College, Dublin.

A series of 8 free life drawing workshops on Thursdays from 21 Jan until 10 March takes place in the National Gallery.

“Honoured to play our part as Volunteers: Ballyfermot and the Irish Revolution 1916-21” is a talk by Aaron Ó Maonaigh.

He will focus on the involvement of and parts played by the men and women of the parish of Ballyfermot and some surrounding areas during the Irish Revolution, 1916-1921. He will trace their participation in seminal moments of the period such as the printing of the Proclamation, the formation of the local Volunteers, the fighting of Easter Week in the South Dublin Union and St. Stephen’s Green areas, right through to the War of Independence and the first echoes of the Thompson submachine gun in Dublin.

“Loss and compensation in the aftermath of the 1916 Rising” is a talk by Dr. Daithí Ó Corráin (School of History & Geography, Dublin City University).

The most visible consequence of the Rising was the destruction of Sackville Street (O’Connell Street) and the adjoining thoroughfares. This resulted in significant material loss for the citizens and property owners of Dublin. Daithí Ó Corráin will explain why the British government accepted liability for the loss of property of all kinds from buildings, which required wholesale reconstruction, to personal items such as tools and jewellery. He will discuss the nature of the compensation process and offer an assessment of the material impact of this restitution on the city and its people.

“Patrick Moran – Irish Volunteer and Trade Unionist” is a lecture by May Moran in dlr LexIcon.

May Moran, the niece of Patrick Moran, will tell the story of her uncle, who – originally from Roscommon – lived and worked in the Blackrock and Dún Laoghaire areas. He was a labour activist and a republican. He took part in the 1916 Rising and was subsequently interned in Frongoch. During the War of Independence he was a leading Irish Volunteer. He was executed by the British in March 1921.

“Darwin the Botanist: What the Plants Said to Him” is a Darwin Day lecture organised by the Humanist Association of Ireland and the Smurfit Institute of Genetics (TCD).

Fraser Mitchell (Associate Professor in Botany and Head of School of Natural Sciences, Trinity College Dublin) will explore how plants and people influenced Darwin him and the relevance some of his musings have still on present day issues such as biodiversity loss and agricultural production. Special attention will also be paid to specimens which were collected by Darwin on the Beagle voyage and are held in the Trinity Herbarium.

The Liquor Rooms are inviting to a night that runs a Casablanca theme. Closely aligned with one of the biggest films that was ever made, the band The Apple Blossom will perform and a DJ set will follow. It is not a film screening of Casablanca, but a recreation of the atmosphere from the film.

The Dublin Sidewalk Astronomers meet at the Martello Tower car park in Sandymount for a public star-gazing. Members bring along their telescopes and share the wonders of the night-sky with you. Admission is free and everybody is welcome.
