The exhibition “Trauma – Built to Break” (20 Nov – 21 Feb) in the Science Gallery is exploring the biological, psychological and societal aspects of trauma. As a sudden, violent, stressful event, trauma can be short-lived or long-lasting with impacts that range from deeply personal to universal.

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, TRAUMA is suitable for all ages and while younger children might need some further explanation, there are lots of exhibits that can easily explained.

The Science Gallery mediators are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service!

A national protest day against water charges is taking place, but going by the number of questions about the nationwide events and by the scarcity of details about the main events in Dublin, the organisations behind the protest are not doing a great job.

You have to piece together all details about the main events and it seems that there are two meeting points, one at Connolly Station and the other at Christ Church. From there the march will probably go to the GPO. It is not clear, though, if there is an event at the GPO or if the event ends there.

“I’m not a painter, I’m a storyteller and the story is You” is the title of this event by painter Renata Ledzinska.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. A Robert Burns Commemoration “Burns Night Out” will take place in Rathmines on Monday to celebrate the birth of Robert Burns (Scotland’s National Poet) in 1759.

Corrigan’s Pub (Mountpleasant Inn) in Rathmines will host a reading aloud of poems by ‘Rabbie’ Burns along with a discussion of his life and works. You will also hear some of the works by other poets who influenced Burns and works by later poets who were influenced by his poetry.

Some local eateries will also participate by putting a Scottish traditional dish on their menu that night. An Bhialann and The Cinnamon will partake.

How can players protect themselves against concussion? What are the consequences of injuries of this kind? How can we make high-contact sports safer?

The talk “Instant History: 1912, 1916, 1918” with Prof David Fitzpatrick (TCD) as part of the Europe’s Violent Memories Lecture Series 2015-16.

At this event a direct link between the study of events and their historic connecition will be looked at. Ulster Day (1912), Easter Week (1916), and Anti-Conscription Day (1918), were all ‘historic’ moments for contemporaries as well as for later generations.

The Instituto Cervantes and the UCD Centre for War Studies invite to the Round Table Discussion “History, memory and the trauma of the Spanish Civil War” (in English!)

The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) is the most traumatic event in the recent history of Spain. The war was triggered by a partially successful military coup and was then fought between Nationalists (right-wing pro-Francoists) and Republicans (government supporters and socialists, communists and anarchists).

The panel will debate debate the interaction between history and memory, the combatants’ personal stories, how democratic Spain has dealt with the remnants and reminders of Franco’s regime and the mass graves throughout the peninsula, where the tens of thousands of Republican victims of summary execution still lie in, how the experience of the civil war was different or similar to other civil wars across Europe, and finally, how this war has impacted on the production of films, fiction and art.

In the talk “Shot at Dawn: Moral Witness”, Prof. Alex Danchev (School of International Relations, University of St Andrews, UK) draws on his teachings of art and war and art and violence, to discuss how aftermath photography and the power of the imagination can best serve historical, political and ethical enquiry today.

“Before they were our neighbours – Dublin 7 and the 1916 Rising” is a talk by historian and author Donal Fallon. “Can there be Education after Auschwitz? Adorno, Nussbaum, Levinas” is a public lecture by Prof Claire Elise Katz (Professor of Philosophy and Women’s and Gender Studies at Texas A&M University) organised by the Trinity Research Centre for Cultures, Academic Values and Education.

In his 1966 radio interview, “Education after Auschwitz”, Theodor Adorno declared, “the premier demand upon all education is that Auschwitz not happen again….”. The lecture discusses this and later opinions to ensure that atrocities like the Holocaust won’t happen again.

The talk “Mining Conflicts in Cajamarca (Peru)” by Lynda Sullivan is a Wednesday Talk of LASC (Latin American Solidarity Campaign).

“In the northern highlands of Peru, in the region Cajamarca, indigenous-campesino communities are struggling to protect their land and their water supply from destruction. A multinational mining corporation, backed up by the World Bank, wants to turn the mountain lakes, the source of water for tens of thousands of subsistence farmers, into immense open pits. This would be the biggest extractive project that Latin America has ever seen.”

Lynda Sullivan is an Irish activist and freelance journalist who has been living in Cajamarca for the past three years.

“The ‘Pre-History’ of Industrial Trawling, and their Impact on the Coastal Fisheries of the U.K. and Ireland: A Brief Discussion” is a lecture by Dr Peter Jones (University of Strathclyde) organised by The Irish Environmental History Network, in the Department of History.

Dr Peter Jones has mapped the spread of beam trawling around the coasts of Great Britain and Ireland between ca. 1550 and 1850 and in his talk he discusses the reasons for that spread and the success (or otherwise) of local and national measures to block it.

The launch of the Irish translation of “Cahier d’un retour au pays natal” by Aimé Césaire will take place. This French poet from Martinique was one of the founders of the negritude literature movement. The book, considered by most as his masterpiece, mixes poetry and prose to express his thoughts on the cultural identity of black Africans in a colonial setting.

Where The Heart Is is an exhibition for anyone who feels they can contribute an artwork towards this social cause. Takin’ The Mic Open-Mic Night is an open mic night at the Irish Writers’ Centre, taking place on the last Friday every month. Writers, spoken-word artists, comedians and musicians are all welcome to perform. Every performer has 5 minutes and you should sign up if you want to perform (details on website below).

Guest MC for the evening is Michelle Read.

Admission is free, but a donation of EUR 5 is suggested. BYOB

The Temple Bar Tradfest runs from Wed 28 January until Sunday 31 January. Many of the free events required tickets (the Frontrow programme) and are booked out now, the Headline programme is not free and contains the main gigs. “Gavin Povey and The Fabulous Oke She Moke She Pops” will play New Orleans style Piano Rhythm & Blues, Boogie Woogie and Rock’n’ Roll.

Gavin Povey has played piano with Van Morrison, Finbar Wright, Kirsty MacColl, Steve Cropper, Shakin’ Stevens and many more.

This gig will take place on 08+15+22+29 January and 05 February.

The Stillorgan Orchard has live music every Friday and Saturday. Many of the performers are established and very good bands. The upcoming gigs are detailed on the website below. Admission is always free.

“Ska ‘n’ Reggae” is the theme in the Dive Bar (downstairs in Turks Head) every Friday. The Bionic Rats play live. followed by DJs until late. Admission is free.
