Open House Dublin is taking place this weekend on Saturday and Sunday. Lots of iconic or interesting buildings are open for you to visit them for free and architects explain what is relevant about the building from an architectural point of view. It is a great event to look behind the facade and to find out more about the buildings in the city we live in. I call it the Culture Night for buildings. ;-)

Some of the iconic buildings you should definitely see are Busáras and Central Bank, apart from that the focus/theme is “This Place We Call Home”. And there are lots of tours offered in places we live in.

I would say that SECRET is for a slightly older audience (maybe 16+), but there are plenty of things that younger children will get as well if you make the effort to explain it to them.

From an airport-style security conveyor belt that records what you have in your pocket; via a Wifi traffic eavesdropping device (Transparency Grenade); a secret handshake training device; books full of stolen passwords (you might find yours!?); a Crypto Bar where you can download cryptographic software, a privacy wall that hides your identity to an installation with notepads where the lines are microprinted lists of Iraqi civilian victims of the Iraq war, you will find lots of interesting secrets.

The Sundays at Noon Concert Series continues in the Sculpture Gallery at the Hugh Lane Gallery. This series of free (mainly classical) concerts continues to present the best of Irish and International music and musicians. Concerts run from September to June.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

“Nicholas Grene will give a talk on the processes of translation and reinterpretation involved in Friel’s adaptations of Chekhov. “The Ardagh Hoard: Discovery, Acquisition and Controversy” is a lecture by Mr Raghnall Ó Floinn (Director of the National Museum of Ireland).

Compared to the discovery of the Derrynaflan hoard in 1980, little is known of the circumstances surrounding the finding of the Ardagh Chalice and other objects found with it in 1868. This lecture will examine the conflicting accounts of the find, the controversy surrounding its discovery and how the objects finally came to the Museum of the Royal Irish Academy.

Most famously, Magna Carta established the principle that all ‘free men’ had the right to justice and a fair trial.”

“Ireland and Climate Change before the Paris Summit” is a lunchtime talk with Father Sean McDonagh.

On 30 November-11 December the world’s leaders will meet in Paris at the UN Climate Change Conference, whose objective is to achieve a legally binding, worldwide agreement on how to tackle climate change for the first time in over 20 years. Failure to achieve that target will lead to potentially catastrophic consequences for global food and security, ecosystems and life on the planet. The Dublin Unitarian Church in St Stephen’s Green is holding five lunchtime talks (13:00-14:00) in the run-up to the Paris summit on different aspects of climate change.

“Thames Way” is a collection of haiku and tanka poems by Diarmuid Fitzgerald. Diarmuid wrote the collection after he walked the length of the river Thames. The reader can experience the journey through the haiku and tanka short poems.

A free Dog Training Event in association with the DSPCA will take place at People’s Gardensin Phoenix Park on Friday. All dog owners are welcome.

In addition to the dog training, there will be a Vet on site and you can also get your dog microchipped (bring a utility bill for identification).

The National Gallery has an extensive programme of free talks, public tours and Art Documentary screenings focusing on highlights of the European and Irish Collection every day of the week. Check their website for details.

Canadian Indie Rock band “Half Moon Run” will be in Tower Records for an In-Store Event (incl. live performance) to launch their new album. Admission is free.

Music is a language which expresses emotion and feelings. In this series of three talks (23+30 Oct + 06 Nov), Michael Grant will trace the development of this language, from the musical notation system in the 9th century through the Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods to the present day.

A panel of industry experts will discuss the art of great cookbooks and the work that goes into creating them in the Gutter Bookshop.

Street Stories 1916 is a weekend of events to mark the 100th anniversary of the 1916 Rising. (It is not clear why this takes place 7 months too early, but it’s not that relevant.) The events include the launch of our commemorative magazine, public talks, walking tours, film screening and live music. Nearly all events will take place around Smithfield.

The weekend will start with a launch on Friday in the “Sacred Heart Chapel” on Church Street (There are a number of churches on Church Street, but I wasn’t able to find the Sacred Heart Chapel.)

At the event there will be the launch of the 1916 Street Stories Festival and magazine ‘1916 in Stoneybatter, Smithfield and The Markets’. Guest Speaker will be RTE’s Joe Duffy and live music will come from the “Landless”, who sing traditional songs a-capella,

Admission? Another piece of information that is unfortunately missing. I’d say there is a good chance that admission is free.

Cornucopia Café & Restaurant host live music three evenings a week (Thurs, Fri and Sat). The restaurant is a Wholefood & Vegetarian Restaurant and is open until 22:15.

The weekly European Folk Dance Workshop/Session takes place in the Tap Bar every Friday.

The dances are French, Greek, Italian, Hungarian, Polish, Portuguese folk and traditional dances and everybody interested to join in or to learn is welcome. Admission is free, but donations (suggested: EUR 3) are very welcome

Cronin are an Irish Indie band and they will play a free gig in the Harbour Bar.

The Dublin Sidewalk Astronomers meet at the Martello Tower car park in Sandymount for a public star-gazing. Members bring along their telescopes and share the wonders of the night-sky with you. Admission is free.

The event is weather dependent, so check www.irishastrosoc.org/events/events.htm after 18:00 on the night in the case of poor weather, to see if it is going ahead.

Elastic Sleep, a 5-piece band, are performing in the Workman’s Club.

The Stillorgan Orchard has live music every Friday and Saturday. Many of the performers are established and very good bands. The upcoming gigs are detailed on the website below. Admission is always free.

“Ska ‘n’ Reggae” is the theme in the Dive Bar (downstairs in Turks Head) every Friday. The Bionic Rats play live. followed by DJs until late. Admission is free.

Supafreak will be in Sin E for a funk gig. Admission is free.

The Witch Trials, Madra, Me&MyDog and Bagels are the four bands that will perform on Friday night in the Mezz.
