Hi all!
We reached 60,000 Facebook Likes last week!!
[ad]
This is a great step forward on the path to 100k Likes! :-) I always DREAM about this scenario where each of the Dublin Event Guide Facebook supporters would get ONE additional person to like the Facebook Page as well. If everyone just had ONE additional friend, it should be possible to double the Likes in one single week. Why do I call it a “dream”, because it doesn’t work! To get 60,000 people to do something needs some very very strong Community Spirit. So instead of 1 week, it might take us 181 weeks to get to 100k, that’s 3.5 (!) years. I have to admit it prefer the 1-week scenario. ;-)
And here is my weekly appeal to you: These are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great. Not very many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others!
And without you spreading the word we would have never reached 23,000 subscribers and 60,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! The goal is 50,000 subscribers and 100,000 Facebook Likes! Big goals, I know, but I believe we can achieve it! Imagine if everyone just got ONE additional person to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). That would be an immediate increase by a few thousand subscribers. Would be super!!!! Can you help?
For donations go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and the link to subscribe is here: www.dublineventguide.com.
—-
Here is the explanation regarding donations: To send the Dublin Event Guide and for domain names and for web hosting, I have a monthly bill of EUR 190 to cover. This is not for me, but all that money goes directly to external service providers. I am working approx. 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week and don’t make any cent, that’s why I ask you to help with the cost if you can. If you can spare EUR 1 per month (that’s just 25 cent per edition!!) please donate EUR 12 for the year (or more if you can …or even less if you can’t). You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail dublineventguide@gmail.com and I can suggest other ways. I am also looking for some corporate sponsors as well, if you know someone, send them my way. :-)
And please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent (but donations are very welcome!) for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 23,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 59,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, LivingSocial, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
Today’s feel good slot is a quote by Maria Robinson:
“Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.”
The ending is not written until you say so!

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
Last week Melanie B, Mark G and Cory H were the wonderful people that did support the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. Thanks a LOT!! Please keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to here and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

The main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.
All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This weekend my selections are the Canal Bank Market on Saturday, then there are only two remaining Shakespeare in the Park performances on Sat+Sun at 15:00 and I plan to be there on Sunday. At Farmleigh House there is a Plant Fair on Sunday if you are into that and the Dublin Zine Fair is happening on Sat+Sun.

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository
Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon
LivingSocial
When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:
HMV | | Vodafone | Pixmania
Expedia | Lastminute.com | Hotels.com
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Help a dog to get an essential nose job!
This is a slightly strange posting here and an unusual request:
A friend of mine from Dublin, Josephine, emigrated to India a few years ago and has been “selected” by the locals as the animal carer in her locality in Goa. People leave unwanted animals with her and shespends all her money to look after them.
Last month a homeless German Shepherd ended up with her. The dog had his nose bitten off by a leopard approx. 2 years ago. As a result he was kicked out by his owner. He can’t breathe or smell through his nose anymore and continues to have an open wound where his nose was which needs daily attention to keep flies, maggots and infections away. He also has trouble breathing because he can only breathe through his mouth.
In order to give him some proper life again, he needs an operation to reconstruct his nose – allowing him to breathe and smell with it again and to stop the constant infections. Josephine managed to find a vet and a facial reconstruction surgeon who are offering good discounts for the operation and the month of intense aftercare, but she needs some help with the cost. The total cost is GBP 950 and through friends and family she has already have raised nearly GBP 600. Can you help Jospehine and Tipu Dog, the German Shepard?
If you are a dog lover and want to help, even with a few Euros, you can do that on Jospehine’s campaign page at gogetfunding.com/give-a-dog-a-nose/ You will find a video and the full story there as well. Thanks!

Twisted Pepper IS closing!
The rumours have been confirmed and the Twisted Pepper is closing this weekend. You have heard it first in the Dublin Event Guide (For Free Events) last week (or from some other rumour inspired gossip). But unfortuantely it did turn out to be based on facts. Good bye Twisted Pepper!
The explanation why the Twisted Pepper is closing is a little unusual “Economic circumstances never effected why we opened, nor why we are closing. When you believe you’re doing something different and you’ve got the fire in your belly – you go for it. When you’ve done all you have set out to do, and you start to feel your repeating yourself and the passion goes, it’s over. “
Well, if the “fire in the belly” is gone, then it is probably best for everyone involved (including the customers) to call it a day.
And after the refurbishment all will be different? Hmmm, yes and no:
“54 Middle Abbey St will be refurbished with a new bar & food focus, mixed with another 5-10 random ideas that will inevitably ‘make no sense’. We will not be a restaurant, we have no idea where that rumour came from. Music will play a part too but it won’t be like it was before. We want to make things smaller, more intimate, more local, more creative… more fun. We want do things differently, but also in many ways return to the roots of where we started many moons ago in Wax.”
So all different but still the same. Hopefully the fire in the belly will come back!

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

El Lissitzky: The Artist and the State
30 Jul – 18 Oct
Irish Museum of Modern Art, Royal Hospital Kilmainham, Dublin 8
“El Lissitzky: The Artist and the State” reflects on the artistic and cultural community who gave voice to a new image for the emerging Irish state after the Easter Rising and a visual language for its politics.
The exhibition brings together a significant body of works from the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, by El Lizzitsky (1890 – 1941), one of the most influential artists of the 20th century who is shown here for the first time in Ireland.

David Claerbout Exhibition
14-22 Aug (11:00-18:00) / 24 Aug – 11 Oct (11:00-20:00)
Project Arts Centre, 39 East Essex Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2
The exhibition consists of a number of video installations by Belgian artist David Claerbout, but reading the description of the exhibition doesn’t explain anything at all, so you better just go and look at it.
Who writes that stuff? “Claerbout’s multiple video installation at Project Arts Centre will challenge conventions of exhibition-making, attempting to further our efforts to perceive what it is to exhibit while exhibiting.” Or this “His is a practice where burgeoning awareness creeps up on you as a viewer, nagging questions of authenticity start to haunt, and our idea of scale based on a fixed position in space becomes unsettled, destabilised, set adrift.”

Modern Wife, Modern Life
July + August
National Print Museum, Beggars Bush, Haddington Road, Dublin 4
Modern Wife, Modern Life is an exhibition exploring the ‘ideal wife’ turned ‘modern wife’ in 1960s Ireland as seen through the pages of women’s magazines.
Manuals on how to be a good wife had been widely available in Ireland at the start of the twentieth century, but with the emergence of new technologies, the advice extended to newly married women and housewives began to change in the 1960s. The concept of being an ‘ideal wife’ became closely bound up with being a ‘modern wife’. This is best identified in the pages of women’s magazines, which came to replace the traditional manual as a source for guidance. The message, driven by the advertisers, was clear: a ‘good wife’ was not just beautifully presented, but also used all the latest ‘modern’ devices. Her home – especially the kitchen – was an extension of her appearance and reputation.
Admission is free and the opening hours are Mon-Fri 09:00-17:00 and Sat-Sun 14:00-17:00. Closed on the bank holidays weekend.

Sand Sculptures – Dublin Castle
10:00 – 18:00, Sat 15 Aug
Dublin Castle, Dame Street, Dublin 2
The yearly Sand Scultpures exhibition will be in the Upper Courtyard of Dublin Castle again.
“Emotional States” is the theme this year and the carving started on 27 July and is now completed. The artists are from Fleeting Sculpture. The exhibition will run until 25 August and admission is free.
People ask usually how the sand withstands the rain and want to know if something is mixed in, but it is just normal sand with no added stuff. Once the carving is finished the “skin” will be sprayed with something to make it a little harder, but the holding together of the sculpture is purely down to the compacting of the sand.

SECRET – Nothing To See Here – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 15 Aug
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
The current exhibition in the Science Gallery (08 Aug – 01 Nov) is called “SECRET – Nothing To See Here” and explores Privacy, Surveillance and Espionage.
Once again it is a really interesting exhibition, that has some intriguing, fascinating and revealing exhibits. Be prepared to do a good bit of reading to understand the background of the exhibits OR get one of the well informed and extremely helpful mediators to explain the details to you.
I would say that SECRET is for a slightly older audience (maybe 16+), but there are plenty of things that younger children will get as well if you make the effort to explain it to them.
From an airport-style security conveyor belt that records what you have in your pocket; via a Wifi traffic eavesdropping device (Transparency Grenade); a secret handshake training device; books full of stolen passwords (you might find yours!?); a Crypto Bar where you can download cryptographic software, a privacy wall that hides your identity to an installation with notepads where the lines are microprinted lists of Iraqi civilian victims of the Iraq war, you will find lots of interesting secrets.
The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00, so there are no excuses! ;-) Admission is free.

Shakespeare in Iveagh Gardens – Play
15:00, Sat 15 Aug

Shakespeare in Iveagh Gardens is back!!
The theatre production company Fortune’s Fool Productions under the leadership of the great Stephanie Courtney is coming back to Iveagh Gardens this year with eleven (!!) Open Air performances of “(Not a Traditional) Taming of the Shrew” by William Shakespeare.
If you have been at their plays in previous years in Iveagh Gardens and Ranelagh Park, you know that they are high-class performances of popular Shakespeare plays that are provided completely free. All actors are super talented and passionate and the event is hugely popular every year. Let’s just hope for good weather!!
The dates this year are 06-16 August with plays during the week (6, 7, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 August) at 19:00 and at the weekend (8, 9, 15, 16 August) at 15:00.
If you are not very familiar with Shakespeare plays, you might want to read some information about the play here, so that you can follow it easier. But keep in mind that the play has “(Not the Traditional)” in the title, so expect some interesting modernisations.

Calambre: Tropical Bass Party
18:00, Sat 15 Aug

Sand Sculptures – Dublin Castle
10:00 – 18:00, Sun 16 Aug
Dublin Castle, Dame Street, Dublin 2

“Emotional States” is the theme this year and the carving started on 27 July and is now completed. The artists are from Fleeting Sculpture. The exhibition will run until 25 August and admission is free.
People ask usually how the sand withstands the rain and want to know if something is mixed in, but it is just normal sand with no added stuff. Once the carving is finished the “skin” will be sprayed with something to make it a little harder, but the holding together of the sculpture is purely down to the compacting of the sand.

Biodiversity Monitoring Talks
14:00, Sun 16 Aug
Farmleigh House, Castleknock end of Phoenix Park, Dublin 15
More Biodiversity Monitoring Talks will take place in August on four Sundays (09+16+23+30 August) and one Saturday (22 Aug) in the Arkle Room of Farmleigh House.
This week’s talk is entitled: “Wildflowers of Ireland and Farmleigh”
As many species of pollinators (bees, wasps, etc) continue to decline around the world, the need to monitor them has increased. The pollinators now rely on us to provide them with a healthy habitat and in turn provide us with food and beauty. By learning a few simple steps to help provide a healthy environment, these species can then continue to provide us with useful functions such as pollination.
The talks will cover various interesting aspects of Biodiversity Monitoring in Ireland including species identification, how to set up a monitoring transect & how to increase pollen and nectar sources in you garden.
The event will start with a 25 minute Biodiversity presentation in the Arkle room followed by a 25 minute outdoor exploration to view some species on Farmleigh grounds. (Weather Permitting).
Admission is free and will be distributed on a first come first served basis at the guides reception desk of Farmleigh. For further information contact farmleightours@gmail.com or call 01 815 5914.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 16 Aug
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.
There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Shakespeare in Iveagh Gardens – Play
15:00, Sun 16 Aug
Iveagh Gardens, Harcourt Street, Dublin 2
This is the very last opportunity to see this performance, don’t miss it;
The theatre production company Fortune’s Fool Productions under the leadership of the great Stephanie Courtney is coming back to Iveagh Gardens this year with eleven (!!) Open Air performances of “(Not a Traditional) Taming of the Shrew” by William Shakespeare.

Sand Sculptures – Dublin Castle
10:00 – 18:00, Mon 17 Aug

Rose of Tralee – First Half
20:00 – 23:30, Mon 17 Aug
Dublin (various locations)
This event notice is not really for anybody who grew up in Ireland. Because you know the “Rose of Tralee” and possibly have your own memories (good or bad) and your own opinion about it (depends possibly on your age).
But imagine if you never saw it before and didn’t grow up in Ireland, how would you describe this “thing”?
Well, I will try: There is a town in the west of Ireland, called Tralee, that for some reason 56 years ago decided that a young woman that has some tentative Irish roots and lives anywhere in the world should represent this town as their “Rose of Tralee”. All over the world, Irish communities run competitions and 32 women will be sent to Tralee to compete against each other. The selection criteria is a mystery to anybody that will watch the show this week. They are usually not selected on their looks or talents or skills, but something has been seen in the 32. From these 32, one will be selected based on similar incomprehensible criteria to become the Rose of Tralee. During a TWO night, very long drawn out programme that is exciting for some (mainly the family members of the candidates) and is cringe-worthy for many others, presenter Dáithí Ó Sé will make meagre attempts of getting anything interesting out of the 32 and he will then also get them to show their bestest talent through performing a dance, sing or play an instrument or if all else fails, maybe recite a poem,
This year, to top it all on the “make it go away” scale, Donegal singer Daniel O’Donnell will sing the “The Rose of Tralee” song during the crowning ceremony on Tuesday evening.
The show is broadcast live on RTE One TV for more than four long hours (2+2) and part-financed by your TV license fees. And to make sure that the rest of the world will not get away undamaged, you can also watch it worldwide on the RTE Player.
“Anachronistic” and “boring” are two of the softer terms that opponents use, but the support seems to be tremendous nevertheless. 56 years!!!!!

Groups led by Cote Calmet, Sean Maynard Smith, Dominic Mullan, Paddy Groenland, Georgia Cusack & Alex Mathias are performing regularly with occasional guest players, but there are also other bands from all over.
Admission is free, with a suggested donation of EUR 5. The website clearly says that there is no entry fee, but – and that makes a lot of sense – that your donations are very much appreciated (Musicians need to pay for rent and food too!) Be generous after the gig if you liked it, but if someone wants to charge an admission charge, please point out that the “rules” as described on their website are like I have explained.

Nigerian Carnival Festival
10:00, Thu 20 Aug
Axis Arts Centre, Main Street, Ballymun, Dublin 9
The Nigerian Carnival Festival takes place in the Axis Centre in Ballymun from Mon 17 – Sun 23 August. There are events every day, but the website is not very enlightening regarding charges for the events. Not a single indication if an event is free or if there is a charge! That’s quite poor! Luckily, though, I found apicture on the Facebook page here that seems to be more helpful, BUT the times for some events are completely different, so chaos reigns!
The list of free events is here:
+ Mon 17 Aug – 19:00: Welcome Ceremony

African Robots – Talk
18:00 – 19:15, Thu 20 Aug
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
African Robots is a project by South African artist and researcher Ralph Borland to create interactive electronic street art, which is art sold on the street by people in South Africa and Zimbabwe.
“Ralph Borland will tell the story of the project so far, from buying cheap Chinese electronic toys in urban markets in Sao Paulo and hacking them into wire work toys for the Harare International Festival of the Arts in Zimbabwe, to designing custom electronics to activate the ideas of wire work artists on the streets of Cape Town. He’ll describe the ideas informing the project, which seeks to recover basic principles of mechanics and computing: from identifying topological ethnomathematics in the approach wire workers take to creating forms, to looking at the history of automotons – taking in figures such as Al Jazari, the 12th century Islamic inventor whose work is thought to have influenced Leonardo da Vinci.”
The event will be hosted by Prof Linda Doyle, Director of CONNECT / CTVR and Professor of Engineering and the Arts at Trinity College.
Admission is free. but booking is required via the website below.

Nigerian Carnival Festival
19:00, Fri 21 Aug
+ Tues 18 Aug – 12:00-15:00: Children’s Cultural Day
+ Thurs 20 Aug – 10:00-15:00: Business, Investment & Tourism Expo (BITE)
+ Fri 21 Aug – 19:00-22:00: Fashion Show / Costume Night
+ Sat 22 Aug – 12:00-20:00: Grand Carnival Finale on The Plaza at Axis Ballymun

If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
