Hi all!
I love bank holidays and I bet you do to! An additional weekend day is nothing to complain about. But I have to admit that I am shocked and slightly disturbed about the fact that it is already August. It’s not just that the year is racing by, it is even worse: It is a kind of a sneaking by in hyperspeed, because I can’t even keep track of it. There I was looking forward to the summer and then summer never happened. :-O
[ad]
Luckily we got a chance to enjoy a few festivals and we are not at the end yet. This week the Dame District is inviting to the Rock-n-Roll Festival, while elsewhere there is also lots happening at non-free festivals.
By the way, did you know that I regularly mention some of the headline non-free events as well? They are mentioned in the Upcoming Events section!
And here is my weekly appeal to you: These are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great. Not very many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others!
And without you spreading the word we would have never reached 23,000 subscribers and 59,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! The goal is 50,000 subscribers and 100,000 Facebook Likes! Big goals, I know, but I believe we can achieve it! Imagine if everyone just got ONE additional person to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). That would be an immediate increase by a few thousand subscribers. Would be super!!!! Can you help?
For donations go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and the link to subscribe is here: www.dublineventguide.com.
—-
Here is the explanation regarding donations: To send the Dublin Event Guide and for domain names and for web hosting, I have a monthly bill of EUR 190 to cover. This is not for me, but all that money goes directly to external service providers. I am working approx. 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week and don’t make any cent, that’s why I ask you to help with the cost if you can. If you can spare EUR 1 per month (that’s just 25 cent per edition!!) please donate EUR 12 for the year (or more if you can …or even less if you can’t). You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail dublineventguide@gmail.com and I can suggest other ways. I am also looking for some corporate sponsors as well, if you know someone, send them my way. :-)
And please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent (but donations are very welcome!) for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 23,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 59,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, LivingSocial, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
Today’s feel good slot is a quote again. It is from Jackosn Kiddard and he says:
Complaining continues to create the vibration of what you don’t want.
Today, take your focus off what is wrong and focus on what is right and how you desire things to be.
Put all your love energy, mental power and decision making towards what you want and do not entertain thoughts that are to the contrary.
Have a complaint-free day today!! ;-) …maybe even a whole week!?

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
Last week Terry McG, Sarah S, Helen B, Brian R and Justin M were the wonderful people that did support the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. Thanks a LOT!! Please keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to here and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

The main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.
All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This weekend the Rock-n-Roll Festival gets my attention, there are lots of different events (Fashion Show, Car Show, Gigs) and I’d say you find something there that interests you a little.
The new Balloon & Kite Festival takes place in Dun Laoghaire.
A Food& Craft Market and Circus Shows are at Farmleigh House
And my final pick for this weekend is the Fireworks in Bray.
Have a great long weekend!

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository
Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon
LivingSocial
When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:
HMV | | Vodafone | Pixmania
Expedia | Lastminute.com | Hotels.com
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) on Facebook – Big Changes
If you are reading the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) for a while, you hopefully know that there is also a Facebook presence for the Dublin Event Guide and nearly 60,000 people have joined our Facebook community. Every day a brief event reminder is posted on that page, mostly before 07:30 in the morning and lots of people use them to plan their day.
The problem was, however, that Facebook decided if you should see it and because of that many many people that wanted to see the Dublin Event Guide updates were not shown by Facebook anymore.
Facebook has now made BIG changes and for the first time YOU are in charge of what you want to see. If you want to make sure that you see the daily event reminders from the Dubln Event Guide do the following:
1) From your Desktop: Go to www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide and lock for the LIKED button in the banner at the top of the page. Click on this LIKED button and you should see a menu that contains the option “SEE FIRST”. Tick it and all is good! ;-) You can change it any time again, so there is no risk.
2) From your Mobile: Go to www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Then find the menu point FOLLOWING at the top, it might be under three dots on the right. When you click on FOLLOWING you will also see “SEE FIRST”. Click on it and you are sorted!
Please tell your friends and family members about this new option if they like the daily messages too.

The former “Opportunities” section is now Eventbrite’s section to highlight some of the events they – as the main sponsor of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) – would particularly like to bring to your attention. Many events listed here will be free, but there will be a non-free event in the list as well and they will be marked as non-free. All information is supplied by Eventbrite.
== EVENTBRITE PICKS ==
No Eventbrite Picks this week, but they will be back next week.
In the meantime you can find more events at www.eventbrite.ie or download the Eventbrite app to find events around you.

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

El Lissitzky: The Artist and the State
30 Jul – 18 Oct
Irish Museum of Modern Art, Royal Hospital Kilmainham, Dublin 8
“El Lissitzky: The Artist and the State” reflects on the artistic and cultural community who gave voice to a new image for the emerging Irish state after the Easter Rising and a visual language for its politics.
The exhibition brings together a significant body of works from the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, by El Lizzitsky (1890 – 1941), one of the most influential artists of the 20th century who is shown here for the first time in Ireland.

Riddle of the Burial Grounds
11 June – 01 Aug – 11:00-18:00 (Closed on Sundays and Bank Holidays)
Project Arts Centre, 39 East Essex Street Temple Bar, Dublin 2
Last day on Saturday (01 Aug):
Nuclear burial grounds (salt mines and other underground spaces that contain nuclear waste) are marked with signs today to warn about the dangers coming from them. But Plutonium, one of the nuclear waste products has a half-life of 24,000 years and maybe we can assume that it is gone after 10 half-times, which is 240,000 years!!
Now compare the wall paintings we find in caves or hieroglyphics with our ways of express information today. How can we ensure that even in 240,000 years the people living then will understand our warning signs and continue to protect and look after these nuclear burial grounds?
“Riddle of the Burial Ground” attempts to imagine a time in which language, signs and forms will be beyond our current comprehension and the 16 artists involved in this exhibition expressed this through sculpture, film, photography, documentary, fiction, science-fiction, history, landscapes and imagined futures.
Admission is free.

Modern Wife, Modern Life
July + August
National Print Museum, Beggars Bush, Haddington Road, Dublin 4
Modern Wife, Modern Life is an exhibition exploring the ‘ideal wife’ turned ‘modern wife’ in 1960s Ireland as seen through the pages of women’s magazines.
Manuals on how to be a good wife had been widely available in Ireland at the start of the twentieth century, but with the emergence of new technologies, the advice extended to newly married women and housewives began to change in the 1960s. The concept of being an ‘ideal wife’ became closely bound up with being a ‘modern wife’. This is best identified in the pages of women’s magazines, which came to replace the traditional manual as a source for guidance. The message, driven by the advertisers, was clear: a ‘good wife’ was not just beautifully presented, but also used all the latest ‘modern’ devices. Her home – especially the kitchen – was an extension of her appearance and reputation.
Admission is free and the opening hours are Mon-Fri 09:00-17:00 and Sat-Sun 14:00-17:00. Closed on the bank holidays weekend.

O’Donovan Rossa Funeral – State Event
10:00, Sat 01 Aug
Glasnevin Museum, Glasnevin Cemetery, Finglas Road, Dublin 11
The funeral of O’Donovan Rossa and Pádraig Pearse’s graveside oration was an important event in the lead up to the 1916 Rising.
A state commemoration of Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa’s funeral will therefore take place on Saturday in the presence of President Michael D. Higgins, Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Heather Humphreys.
1500 tickets to this event were distributed through the Glasnevin Cemetery website for access to areas adjacent to the Church and O’Connell Tower in the Cemetery and you must have a valid ticket to access this area.
A non ticketed public viewing area, with space for up to 5,000 people will be available outside the Cemetery. This viewing area will be fitted with large screens televising the event. No tickets are required there.
Please note: Parking in the area will be severely limited and road closures will be in place, so you should walk or come by public transport.
The event is the first of the State ceremonial events of the Ireland 2016 Centenary Programme. It will follow the proceedings of the original funeral of O’Donovan Rossa and will culminate with a wreath laying ceremony, the firing of a volley of shots, the raising of the National Flag and the National Anthem.
The details about this event are extremely hard to come by as if the state doesn’t want you to know. The start time was no where to be found despite researching at least 20 relevant websites, but in the end the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” was able to get the information for you. ;-) However, there is still confusion: Glasnevin Cemetery says that the event starts at 10:00, the AA says it starts at 10:30 and the President’s office claims it starts at 11:00. I would think that the event actually starts at 11:00, but people are expected from 10:00/10:30, but that is just my guess.
It seems as if this state commemoration and the funeral re-enactment (including procession with hearse and marching bands from Dublin City Hall to Glasnevin Cemetery) are organised completely separately.

Sand Sculptures – Dublin Castle
10:00 – 18:00, Sat 01 Aug
Dublin Castle, Dame Street, Dublin 2
The yearly Sand Scultpures exhibition will be in the Upper Courtyard of Dublin Castle again.
“Emotional States” is the theme this year and the carving started on 27 July. The work is weather dependent and while the artists are working on it, you can watch them doing their thing (The artists are from Fleeting Sculpture and often are happy to answer questions.) The exhibition will run until 25 August and admission is free.
People ask usually how the sand withstands the rain and want to know if something is mixed in, but it is just normal sand with no added stuff. Once the carving is finished the “skin” will be sprayed with something to make it a little harder, but the holding together of the sculpture is purely down to the compacting of the sand.

O’Donovan Rossa Funeral Re-Enactment – Procession
12:00 – 15:00, Sat 01 Aug
Dublin (various locations)
Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa was a prominent member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood and a Fenian leader. He was born on 10 September 1831 in Co. Cork and he died on 29 June 1915 in New York where he lived since 1870 with no right to return to Ireland.
After his death his body was returned to Ireland to be buried on Glasnevin cemetery and the funeral took place on 01 August 2015. The graveside oration given by Pádraig Pearse, is one of the most famous speeches of the Irish independence movement.
O’Donovan Rossa is seen as one of the forefathers of the Easter Rising of 1916 and the re-enactment of his funeral on its 100th anniversary on Saturday is the first event of the 2016 commemorations of the Easter Rising.
The coffin will be “lying in state” from 12:00 in City Hall. Then at 13:00 the funeral procession assemble at 13:00 on Barnardos Square and at 13:30, the coffin will be brought to the Horse Drawn Hearse from the Rotunda in City Hall. The Cortege departs at 14:00 with a Guard of honour and a number of marching bands.
The route will be Dame St, Westmoreland St, O’Connell St. (at 14:20), Parnell St, Parnell Sq, Mountjoy St, Berkley Road, Cabra Road, Finglas Road and at 15:00 it will arrive at Glasnevin Cemetery.
This event is seemingly organised by Sinn Fein and it appears as if it is not connected in any way to the State Event at Glasnevin Cemetery that is also taking place on the same day.

Sand Sculptures – Dublin Castle
10:00 – 18:00, Sun 02 Aug

Fiestaval – Temple Bar Food Festival
12:00 – 18:00, Sun 02 Aug
Meeting House Square, Temple Bar, Dublin 2
The “Fiestaval” on Sun and Mon (02+03 Aug) is a new Food Festival on Temple Bar’s Meeting House Square.
There will be food from the five Temple Bar restaurants, The Boxty House (traditional), The Chameleon (Indonesian), Klaw” by Niall Sabongi of Rock Lobster (Seafood), Bar Pinxto (Spanish) and Monty’s of Kathmandu (Nepalese).
We certainly love a good festival, but does this event qualify as a festival or is it just five or so food stalls around Meeting House Square? Because in that case the name “festival” might be a little too ambitious….or should we call the Temple Bar Food Market every week on Saturdays the REAL and much bigger “Temple Bar Food Festival”?
The only non-food-stall element is the entertainment part that lists “Giant games, Craft club, Face painting and Live DJ”.
Admission to Meeting House Square is free.

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Sand Sculptures – Dublin Castle
10:00 – 18:00, Mon 03 Aug

Fiestaval – Temple Bar Food Festival
12:00 – 18:00, Mon 03 Aug

First Wednesday – Free Entrance to OPW Sites
09:00, Wed 05 Aug
Various OPW locations in Dublin
Entry charges at nearly all OPW sites are waived once a month. The Office of Public Works (OPW) wants to encourage people to visit the historic sites that it manages and has therfore started this initiative in 2011.
Most OPW owned sites can already be visited for free, but the sites that normally charge a fee will be free every first Wednesday as well. In the (extended) Greater Dublin Area this means you can visit the following sites for free:
+ The Casino, Marino
+ Dublin Castle, State Apartments
+ Kilmainham Gaol
+ Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre at Newgrange
+ Glendalough Visitor Centre in Wicklow
As you can imagine, this event is very popular and therfore it is strongly recommended to arrive early at the venues. Once the day’s tickets are given out, you will not get access anymore (e.g. at Kilmainham Gaol and Newgrange). At Dublin Castle there will be self-guided tours throughout the day, but if the queue gets too long (it has happened) then it is possible that no more people will get admitted into the queue.

Sand Sculptures – Dublin Castle
10:00 – 18:00, Thu 06 Aug

Secrets of the Bog Bodies – Genealogy at Lunchtime
13:00, Thu 06 Aug
National Library, Kildare Street, Dublin 2
In August and September a series of talks introducing a broad range of topics in Irish family history will take place in the National Library every Tuesdays and Thursdays from 13:00-14:00. Booking is not required and admission is free.
+ 06 Aug: Secrets of the Bog bodies with Speaker Ned Kelly
“Bog bodies are rare survivals of human remains from earlier times. The properties of bogs are such that, occasionally, bodies are preserved to an exceptional degree with hair, skin, hands, internal organs and other soft tissue intact. Prehistoric bog bodies found recently in Ireland have provided important new insights into pagan Celtic times. The killings were ritual in nature and related to ancient sovereignty rites. The talk will present some of the results of the forensic analysis of the Irish bog bodies to see what insights they provide into the ritual killings. The wider archaeological context of the finds will be examined including historical, mythological and folklore material, to provide insights into the secrets of the bog bodies.”

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!
Bicycle On the sport fines coming into effect
On 01 August the new penalties for misbehaviours by cyclists came into effect and a garda can give you an on the sport fine if you ignore a red light etc. There are seven spelled out offences, but don’t be fooled, this is not the full story! Read more below!
First of all let me remind you that the penalty is EUR 40. The Fixed Charge Penalty Notice will be sent to the address you gave the gardai. However, if he has reason to suspect that the address you gave is not correct, he can seize your bicycle immediately. If you decide not to pay and the whole matter goes to court, it could increase the cost to EUR 2000, but there COULD also be a chance to get off, depending on the case.
Helmets and High-viz vests are NOT compulsory, despite a misleading recent Garda poster that could have interpreted to mean that you could be charged if you don’t wear a helmet.
And what were these 7 offences again? Here they are:
1. Cyclist driving a pedal cycle without reasonable consideration.
2. No front lamp or rear lamp lit during lighting-up hours on a pedal cycle.
3. Cyclist proceeding into a pedestrianised street or area.
4 . Cyclist proceeding past traffic lights when the red lamp is illuminated.
5. Cyclist proceeding past cycle traffic lights when red lamp is lit.
6. Cyclist failing to stop for a School Warden sign.
7. Cyclist proceeding beyond a stop line, barrier or half barrier at a railway level crossing, swing bridge or lifting bridge, when the red lamps are flashing.
It is unclear why these 7 were chosen. Driving the wrong way into a one-way street is not on the list. Cycling on a footpath is not either, but cycling into an pedestrianised area is on it!? Seems odd.
But the oddest thing of all is the first one on the list above! The “without reasonable consideration” is a catch all rule and instead of having clear rules you now depend on the interpretation of reasonable consideration by a garda again. Does this make sense? I don’t think so! Laws should be clear and precise and should spell out what you are allowed to do and what now. They should not and NEVER require interpretation by a garda on the street!

If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
