Hi all!
This weekend the Festival of Curiosity with lots of “sub-events” is taking place, have a good look through the Dublin Event Guide to find them all.
[ad]
If there is only ONE event you can go to then consider the Treasure Hunt on Sunday. I like Treasure Hunts because they get you out to explore aspects of Dublin that you otherwise wouldn’t see and they usually don’t take too long (in this case 1.5 hours) if you don’t have that much time. Sure they are for kids, but, hey, we are all kids, just some of us are big ones. So get in touch with your inner-kid and enjoy the treasure hunt….or whatever else you will do.
Thanks a lot to the people that helped with a donation last week. The EUR 190 that are needed per month nearly came together. With a bit of luck (and your goodwill) there are some more donations this week and then the Dublin Event Guide is secured again for a month, :-) Thanks!
And here is my weekly appeal to you: These are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great. Not very many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others!
And without you spreading the word we would have never reached 23,000 subscribers and 59,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! The goal is 50,000 subscribers and 100,000 Facebook Likes! Big goals, I know, but I believe we can achieve it! Imagine if everyone just got ONE additional person to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). That would be an immediate increase by a few thousand subscribers. Would be super!!!! Can you help?
For donations go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and the link to subscribe is here: www.dublineventguide.com.
—-
Here is the explanation regarding donations: To send the Dublin Event Guide and for domain names and for web hosting, I have a monthly bill of EUR 190 to cover. This is not for me, but all that money goes directly to external service providers. I am working approx. 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week and don’t make any cent, that’s why I ask you to help with the cost if you can. If you can spare EUR 1 per month (that’s just 25 cent per edition!!) please donate EUR 12 for the year (or more if you can …or even less if you can’t). You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail dublineventguide@gmail.com and I can suggest other ways. I am also looking for some corporate sponsors as well, if you know someone, send them my way. :-)
And please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent (but donations are very welcome!) for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 23,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 58,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, LivingSocial, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
Today’s feel good slot is a quote again. It is from Joel Osteen and he says:
If you want to be happy, you have to be happy on purpose.
When you wake up, you can’t just wait to see what kind of day you’ll have.
You have to decide what kind of day you’ll have.
Have a great day today!! ;-)

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
Last week Cathal S, Julia AY, Anne C, Cyril C, George K, Paul S, Susan H were the wonderful people that did support the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. Thanks a LOT!! Please keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to here and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

The main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.
All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This weekend strongly recommend that you take part in the Festival of Curiosity. Many super interesting events needed tickets and they are all gone, but there are still unticketed events that you should check out: The Dublin Maker Faire on Saturday, the Treasure Hunt on Sunday, the Physics in the Gardens event in the Botanic Gardens and there is more!
Also have a look at the Dublin Live Art Festival in Sunday at the Casino in Marino!!

Promote your product or event through a competition!
If you want to reach more than 23,000 people with a product promotion or an event promotion for a non-free event, contact me on dublineventguide@gmail.com and we can discuss the options. You provide the prize for the competition and the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) runs the competition for you. It couldn’t be simpler.
And if you want me to use/test a product you are selling and then share my assessment here in the Dublin Event Guide, we can talk about that too. I like testing out gear. ;-) [Currently I am looking to buy a high spec Android mobile phone and an action camera and would happily “test drive” some candidates.]

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository
Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon
LivingSocial
When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:
HMV | | Vodafone | Pixmania
Expedia | Lastminute.com | Hotels.com
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Mothercare and Best Menswear in examinership
It would be great to have only good news in this section, but sometimes the not so good news also have to get mentioned to ensure that you don’t lose out. During the week it was announced that both Mothercare and Best Mens Wear were put in Examinership.
Examinership is usually not the end, instead a company got into trouble and the examiner has decided that there is a good chance that the company can get fixed or sold. And after a period of “healing” and renegotiation of debts and rents, many companies can leave examinership again and continue. But nothing is guaranteed and therefore you need to consider this development especially if you have a gift voucher for either of the shops or if you have to bring back something or have any type of running “dispute” over a product you bought.
Currently both shops are open and are fully operational, but in some circumstances this can change during or after the examinership. So don’t wait!

STOP the Spars, Centra, Londis & Starbucks in the City Centre!
Do we not have enough Spars, Centras, Londis and Starbucks in the City Centre? Do we really need one of each at every street corner?
There was this lovely bookshop “Books Upstairs” at 36 College Green (just 2 up from the new-ish Abercrombie&Fitch shop). Luckily it didn’t have to close down, but instead moved to new premises in 17 D’Olier Street (opposite Doyle’s Pub), but guess what goes in their old premises on College Green? …another flippin Spar! Such a pity!
There is a red banner outside on the railings at the moment promising that an “exciting” Spar shop will open soon. I don’t know if you get excited about groceries, but I don’t.

The former “Opportunities” section is now Eventbrite’s section to highlight some of the events they – as the main sponsor of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) – would particularly like to bring to your attention. Many events listed here will be free, but there will be a non-free event in the list as well and they will be marked as non-free. All information is supplied by Eventbrite.
== EVENTBRITE PICKS ==
No Eventbrite Picks this week, but they will be back next week.
In the meantime you can find more events at www.eventbrite.ie or download the Eventbrite app to find events around you.

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Riddle of the Burial Grounds
11 June – 01 Aug – 11:00-18:00 (Closed on Sundays and Bank Holidays)
Project Arts Centre, 39 East Essex Street Temple Bar, Dublin 2
Nuclear burial grounds (salt mines and other underground spaces that contain nuclear waste) are marked with signs today to warn about the dangers coming from them. But Plutonium, one of the nuclear waste products has a half-life of 24,000 years and maybe we can assume that it is gone after 10 half-times, which is 240,000 years!!
Now compare the wall paintings we find in caves or hieroglyphics with our ways of express information today. How can we ensure that even in 240,000 years the people living then will understand our warning signs and continue to protect and look after these nuclear burial grounds?
“Riddle of the Burial Ground” attempts to imagine a time in which language, signs and forms will be beyond our current comprehension and the 16 artists involved in this exhibition expressed this through sculpture, film, photography, documentary, fiction, science-fiction, history, landscapes and imagined futures.
Admission is free.

Modern Wife, Modern Life
July + August
National Print Museum, Beggars Bush, Haddington Road, Dublin 4
Modern Wife, Modern Life is an exhibition exploring the ‘ideal wife’ turned ‘modern wife’ in 1960s Ireland as seen through the pages of women’s magazines.
Manuals on how to be a good wife had been widely available in Ireland at the start of the twentieth century, but with the emergence of new technologies, the advice extended to newly married women and housewives began to change in the 1960s. The concept of being an ‘ideal wife’ became closely bound up with being a ‘modern wife’. This is best identified in the pages of women’s magazines, which came to replace the traditional manual as a source for guidance. The message, driven by the advertisers, was clear: a ‘good wife’ was not just beautifully presented, but also used all the latest ‘modern’ devices. Her home – especially the kitchen – was an extension of her appearance and reputation.
Admission is free and the opening hours are Mon-Fri 09:00-17:00 and Sat-Sun 14:00-17:00

The Festival of Curiosity
09:00, Sat 25 Jul
Coach House, Dublin Castle, Dame Street, Dublin 2
The Festival of Curiosity is a brilliant Science & Art Festival in Dublin and I hope you saw it in the Upcoming Events section for the last two weeks, because the event is very very popular and the many (but not enough) free tickets for some of the events go like hot cakes.
If you got your tickets in time, all is good, but if you didn’t, then the news is unfortunately not good: All free tickets are gone! There are still tickets for a few non-free events available and there are also some drop-in activities where you don’t need tickets.
The full programme is here festivalofcuriosity.ie/index.php/programme
The free events that don’t need tickets (e.g. Dublin Maker, Origami Zoo, Curiosity Garden, Physics in the Gardens and the Curious Trails Treasure Hunt) all are listed as separate events in this event guide.

Malahide Festival
10:00, Sat 25 Jul
Malahide (various)
The Malahide Festival (or “Malahide Has it! Festival”) is taking place this weekend on Saturday and Sunday.
Information about it is sparse, unfortunately: The website points to the Facebook Page, but the Facebook Page has no detailed information this year. Maybe the organisers will add some information over the next few days. If not, have a look at the programme for the 2014 festival, often Community Festivals like that roughly repeat the same programme year after year.
Expect a Fun Fair, Children’s Entertainment, Live Music, Arts&Crafts, Food etc for all the family.

The Festival of Curiosity
09:00, Sun 26 Jul

Biodiversity Monitoring Talks
14:00, Sun 26 Jul
Farmleigh House, Castleknock end of Phoenix Park, Dublin 15
More Biodiversity Monitoring Talks will take place in July on four Sundays (05+12+19+26 July) in the Arkle Room of Farmleigh House.
This week’s talk is entitled: “Polinators of Ireland and Farmleigh”
As many species of pollinators (bees, wasps, etc) continue to decline around the world, the need to monitor them has increased. The pollinators now rely on us to provide them with a healthy habitat and in turn provide us with food and beauty. By learning a few simple steps to help provide a healthy environment, these species can then continue to provide us with useful functions such as pollination.
The talks will cover various interesting aspects of Biodiversity Monitoring in Ireland including species identification, how to set up a monitoring transect & how to increase pollen and nectar sources in you garden.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 26 Jul
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.
There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!
Safefood – We will scare you sooner or later!
Tiny Ireland has two organisations that look after food safety. One is doing a good job, all considered, and the other one is trying to scare the bejaysus out of you if you let them. Unfortunately, though, the superfluous organisation is an All-Ireland organisation and therefore more or less untouchable.
The two players in this field are in one corner, the Food Safety Authority of Ireland, who inspect restaurants for food safety breaches and can close them down. They advise us on Food Safety and seem to do a good and balanced job. And the other corner there is Safefood, who love sensationalism, constantly try to scare you about bacteria and germs. You probably remember the TV ads. They tell you to boil dishclothes every two days and live in constant fear and panic of food poisoning.
Well, the newest campaign with which Safefood want to scare you is Folic Acid! It is not that the food supplement is bad for you, no, this time they are telling you that you should take it every day as long as you are female and are seksually (wrong spelling to avoid the wrath from spam checkers!) active. Why should you take it EVERY day? Because you COULD get pregnant, no matter what type of protection you might use and/or what your intentions are regarding becoming pregnant. You might have been seksually active for 10 years and still not been pregnant once in that time, but according to Safefood it could have happened ANY time. I hope you see the MASSIVE risk that would have totally justified taking Folic acid for the last 3650 days!
Well in this case, I’d say you should take Blood Thinners (Heparin/Warfarin etc) on a daily basis because you COULD get a stroke ANY day and you also should take antibiotics every day because you COULD get an infection in the next 10 minutes. And while you are at it, better add some Prozac as well, because you could start suffering from depression tomorrow.
Safefood is just odd!

It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
