Hi all!
Yes, you are seeing right. It is a Dublin Event Guide in your Inbox that has arrived BEFORE Saturday. It was the norm in earlier years of the Dublin Event Guide, but for quite some time it is a rarity. I hope you enjoy it and get an even better chance to use all the information that it contains.
[ad]
I wish I could promise or even guarantee that that is the new publishing time from now on, but unfortunately I can’t promise that. To achieve it, I had to start working on it already on Tuesday and I won’t be able to do that normally. The exceptional circumstances are that I will be on holidays from Friday until next Thursday. Nearly a week of holidays!? That is also a rarity. ;-) Nevertheless, don’t fret, the Dublin Event Guide will also reach you next week: As soon as I arrive in Dublin, I will start working on it on Thursday night.
A sizeable logistical challenge, but I hope it will all work out and nobody will be disappointed.
Even while I am away, I need your help and it the same as every week, but it is really really important:
There are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your help with: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great. Not very many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others! Last week, for example, not a single person did give any donation. :-(
And without you spreading the word we would have never reached 23,000 subscribers and 57,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! The goal is 50,000 subscribers and 100,000 Facebook Likes! Big goals, I know, but I believe we can achieve it! Imagine if everyone just got ONE additional person to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). That would be an immediate increase by a few thousand subscribers. Would be super!!!! Can you help?
For donations go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and the link to subscribe is here: www.dublineventguide.com.
—-
Here is the explanation regarding donations: To send the Dublin Event Guide and for domain names and for web hosting, I have a monthly bill of EUR 190 to cover. This is not for me, but all that money goes directly to external service providers. I am working approx. 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week and don’t make any cent, that’s why I ask you to help with the cost if you can. If you can spare EUR 1 per month (that’s just 25 cent per edition!!) please donate EUR 12 for the year (or more if you can …or even less if you can’t). You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail dublineventguide@gmail.com and I can suggest other ways. I am also looking for some corporate sponsors as well, if you know someone, send them my way. :-)
And please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent (but donations are very welcome!) for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 23,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 56,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, LivingSocial, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
Today’s feel good slot is a quote and it is simple and self-explanatory:
Do something today that your future self will be thank you for.
It could be anything! Maybe something practical, maybe even boring and unexciting, like “Clean your kitchen”, or it could be something a lot deeper, like suggested in this article. Or anything in-between.

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
Last week Jacinta O’B and Mark C were the wonderful people supporting the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. Thanks a lot! Please keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to here and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

The main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.
All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
The Riverfest along the Liffey is always a good reason to get out on the June Bank Holiday weekend if you are not going to Bloom in Phoenix Park, where more than 100,000 people will be. The Riverfest was once the Maritime Festival and it has changed since, but it is still worth a visit. Bloom Fringe is an alternative to Bloom with more of a focus on people getting together and on collaboration. 36 events are part of Bloom Fringe and you should find something

Obeo Food Waste Box Competition – Get into the recycling habit this summer
Fed up with your smelly brown bin? Then this invention might just be what you need.
The Obeo food waste box is the cleanest, easiest way to deal with food waste. It’s a compostable little box you keep on the kitchen counter, fill up over a few days then throw into the brown bin when full and simply start again with a fresh one. It’s water-resistant so it can cope with any wet or sticky food waste you throw in it. So wave bye bye to bin juice. And the great thing is there’s absolutely no smell.
Using your brown bin can save you money on waste charges AND it will help the environment. So if you haven’t started using it yet let Obeo look after the downsides of the brown bin.
Obeo are giving Dublin Event Guide readers the chance to win a 6 month supply of their food waste boxes (worth EUR 40) so that should keep you recycling well past the smelly bin season. Just send an email to dublineventguide@gmail.com with OBEO in the subject line and your name, phone number and address in the body of the email so we can post the prize to you. And also go to www.facebook.com/WeAreObeo and LIKE them to be kept up to date with more competitions. Your mail has to be with me by 10 June at 12:00.
In addition Obeo is offering Dublin Event Guide readers a special discount on their online shop www.weareobeo.com/obeo-shop. Just enter the code dubevent15 to get up to 25% off Obeo.
And for anyone going to Bloom this weekend stop by the Obeo stand at G29A in the Grand Pavilion and mention the Dublin Event Guide to get a free sample.

Promote your product or event through a competition!
If you want to reach more than 23,000 people with a product promotion or an event promotion for a non-free event, contact me on dublineventguide@gmail.com and we can discuss the options. You provide the prize for the competition and the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) runs the competition for you. It couldn’t be simpler.
And if you want me to use/test a product you are selling and then share my assessment here in the Dublin Event Guide, we can talk about that too. I like testing out gear. ;-) [Currently I am looking to buy a high spec Android mobile phone and an action camera and would happily “test drive” some candidates.]

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository
Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon
LivingSocial
When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:
HMV | | Vodafone | Pixmania
Expedia | Lastminute.com | Hotels.com
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

“New” People’s Park in Dun Laoghaire
After an extensive refurbishment, the People’s Park in Dun Laoghaire was re-launched again in its original Victorian layout. Less hard surfacing and more soft landscaping features will be found there now and the pavillion building has migrated from a tea house to a restaurant.
I have to admit that without seeing it myself, I can’t imagine what the changes are and I would suggest the same to you! Go there, and check it out. The People’s Park Market is every Sunday, so that might be an added reason to have a look.

Floating Pool and Urban Beach for Dun Laoghaire
In more news from Dun Laoghaire, the Floating Pool and Urban Beach that will be similar to the Badeschiff (Bathing Ship) in Berlin (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Badeschiff) now finally got the green light. Dun Laoghaire Rathdown already granted permission in 2014, but objections held up the project and now all systems are GO! It is expected that the Pool and Beach in Dun Laoghaire Harbour will open in Summer 2016.

Colla Castellera (Human Towers) in Ireland
Human towers “castells” are one of the most unique traditions in Catalonia built traditionally in festivals at many locations within Catalonia. At these festivals, several colles castelleres or teams often succeed in building and dismantling a tower’s structure.
And the Colla Castelleras have found their way to Dublin. A new group is starting to make these human towers in Dublin and they want to invite everyone to participate and join them. You will learn how possible it is to break barriers and do things you deemed impossible and you will connect with your team in a physical, mental and metaphysical way.
Admission is free and everyone is invited to participate or just come and have a look. It takes place in Iveagh Gardens every Saturday at 11:00.

The former “Opportunities” section is now Eventbrite’s section to highlight some of the events they – as the main sponsor of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) – would particularly like to bring to your attention. Many events listed here will be free, but there will be a non-free event in the list as well and they will be marked as non-free. All information is supplied by Eventbrite.
== EVENTBRITE PICKS ==
The Eventbrite Picks will be back again next week.
And in the meantime you can find more events at www.eventbrite.ie or download the Eventbrite app to find events around you.

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

14:00 – 17:00, Sun 31 May
Dublin Castle, Dame Street, Dublin 2
“Connect the Dots” is an initiative that will explore, pilot, and test a series of creative interventions to connect people over the issue of vacant space in Dublin. We intend to pool knowledge, share ideas, exchange resources, and collaborate towards systems change.
Two events, which are part of Bloom Fringe, will take place this weekend:
+ Saturday 30 May: Connect the Dots: Urban Picnic (14:00-16:00)
Come picnic and plan with the Connect the Dots team to help further developing the four main visions addressing the challenges of reusing space: 1) Support Network / Coalition 2) Information Collection & Dissemination 3) Liaising & Advising Mechanism 4) Policy, Legislation, Regulation
And on Sunday you can find out some results:
+ Sunday 31May: Connect the Dots: Interactive Public Exhibition (14:00-17:00)
Check out what Connect the Dots has been up to and join in in working to address the reuse of space in Dublin. Your advice, ideas and help in reimagining and re-animating our city together is needed.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 31 May
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.
There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Bank Holiday Monday
08:00, Mon 01 Jun
Dublin (various locations)
On the June Bank Holiday Monday Dublin is usually packed. Not necessarily with visitors from other countries, but with participants in the Women’s Mini Marathon. Office based employees have a day off, but there is no mercy for people working in shops: Nearly all shops will be open as normal. Pay and Display Parking will not be enforced, but bus lanes and loading bays are going by week day and do not treat bank holidays differently, so Monday rules are Monday rules: Stay out of bus lanes and loading bays!
Enjoy your bank holiday if you are lucky enough to have the day off!

Bloom Fringe Festival
08:00, Mon 01 Jun
Dublin (various locations)
The BloomFringe Festival doesn’t have much to do with Bloom in Phoenix Park, apart from the fact that they happen on the same weekend and that there is also a bit of a Gardening aspect to Bloom Fringe. But Bloom Fringe is full of really intersting events between Saturday 30 May and Monday 01 June.
There are open days, talks, retail trails, secret dublin tours, workshops, art installations and foodie pop-up moments and social enterprise and inspired collaboration are core elements of Bloom Fringe. And creativity, community, healthy living and sustainable biodiversity are really important as well.
A few events are explicitly mentioned in this Dublin Event Guide, but there are soo many Bloom Fringe events (at least 36) – and the majority are free – that it doesn’t make sense to list them all. Instead, you should go to www.bloomfringe.com and www.facebook.com/bloomfringedublin and check them out.

Women’s Mini Marathon
14:00, Mon 01 Jun
Dublin (various locations)
The yearly Women’s Mini Marathon, a 10km run/jog/walk for women only, will take place again this Bank Holiday Monday.
It is not a free event and registration is closed by now, but you are still invited and welcome to support the runners by cheering them on. There is usually a great atmosphere and any support is appreciated.
Over 40,000 (!!!) participants are expected and many form our Dublin Event Guide Community are taking part. Have a great walk/jog/run and “Well done!” for taking part!!
The event starts at Baggot Street Upper and then goes via Pembroke Road and Merrion Road to Nutley Lane towards the RTE mast. At Stillorgan Road runners will turn left to run a loop and then turn back to run into town via Donnybrook Road, Morehampton Road and Leeson Street with the Finnish in Fitzwilliam Street.
Roads in that area of South Dublin will be closed for many hours, some from 06:00 in the morning and until 19:30. So ideally avoid the area if you only want to pass through.
Advise for runners: If you travel by car to the race, you need to leave it a good bit away from the course, but be careful! Leave NOTHING in the car. A few years ago I saw two or three broken-in cars of participants on car parks in Clontarf with basjed side windows.

Locating James Joyce’s Cartographic Narrative Layers – Lecture
14:00, Tue 02 Jun
Trinity Long Room Hub, Fellows’ Square, Trinity College, Dublin 2
“The Mapping Dubliners Project: Locating James Joyce’s Cartographic Narrative Layers” is a talk by Professor Jasmine Mullikene (Oklahoma State University) organised by the School of English.
“James Joyce’s Dubliners contains references to approximately 200 locations in and outside of Dublin. When read carefully, it is also possible to extrapolate distinct routes, intersecting and overlapping paths that link characters and narratives together. To reveal the geospatial patterns and play, it is necessary to visualize the geographic references on a map. To this end, the Mapping Dubliners Project, begun in 2010, is a digital tool that utilizes Google Maps and Google Earth to locate and display each of the places and routes referenced in Dubliners.
This presentation will provide a tour of the Mapping Dubliners Project and explore the interpretive implications of some of the mapped locations as well as the potentials of digital media in literary studies.”
Admission is free.

However these services are being threatened by a range of human activity. First Wednesday – Free Entrance to OPW Sites
09:00, Wed 03 Jun
Various OPW locations in Dublin
Entry charges at nearly all OPW sites are waived once a month. The Office of Public Works (OPW) wants to encourage people to visit the historic sites that it manages and has therfore started this initiative in 2011.
Most OPW owned sites can already be visited for free, but the sites that normally charge a fee will be free every first Wednesday as well. In the (extended) Greater Dublin Area this means you can visit the following sites for free:
+ The Casino, Marino
+ Dublin Castle, State Apartments
+ Kilmainham Gaol
+ Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre at Newgrange
+ Glendalough Visitor Centre in Wicklow
As you can imagine, this event is very popular and therfore it is strongly recommended to arrive early at the venues. Once the day’s tickets are given out, you will not get access anymore.

A Chinese Immortality? W.B. Yeats’s “Lapis Lazuli” – Lecture
13:00, Wed 03 Jun
National Library, Kildare Street, Dublin 2
William Butler Yeats received a Chinese carved stone in lapis lazuli as a 70th birthday present from the poet, Harry Clifton. ‘Lapis Lazuli’, one of his best-known later poems, was inspired by the carving and dedicated to Clifton.
In this lecture, Professor Jerusha McCormack uses her experience of teaching in and about China to decode this poem as it moves from Western versions of immortality to the more elusive Chinese vision as inscribed in the carvings of this artefact.
Admission is free and no booking required.

It is confusing me and seemingly many other people as well for years. You tell someone that you meet him/her next Sunday and unless you know each other well, there is a high probability that you will be asked WHICH Sunday is “next” Sunday for you. And in my case, I find out nearly everytime that people I am talking to have difficulties with this little adjective.
Imagine you stand in a line with a few other people to your left and to your right. If someone looked at you and asked you “WHo is the person next to you on your right?” where would you point? To the person that is so close that he/she touches your arm? Or would you skip that person and point to the one that is more than an armslength away and where another person is between you and the one you point to? I’d bet all my money that you would point to the person that is touching your arm. True?
So what black magic happens when we talk about days of the week?
If it is Monday and I tell you, let’s meet next Wednesday, then OBVIOUSLY (to me!) this is the day just two days away, but that is the next closest Wednesday to today. I would NEVER think of the Wednesday that is 9 days away, because it is NOT the NEXT one!
And before you tell me that there is a difference between “this” Wednesday and “next” Wednesday, I will have to tell you that “this” Wednesday is the NEXT Wednesday that will follow today in our example.
How can ANYBODY think that “next” is not really “next”, but skips one in between? Odd!!!!

You are receiving this newsletter because you have subscribed to it!!
If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
