The shops in Dundrum Town Centre are coming together to help Console, the mental health charity that offers support for people in suicidal crisis or people bereaved by suicide through counselling, support and helpline services. In addition to raising awareness, the event will also raise funds for the charity, but instead of having to donate money, you will instead save a significant amount of money.

The Dublin Bay Prawn Festival 2015 is taking place this weekend and it is a a very popular event. There is good food, but also lots of other events and for many people it is just a good reason to go to Howth for the day.

Many restaurants have special Prawn Festival Dinner Menus and there is a Festival Village near the Harbour with Cooking Demos, Food Stalls and Family Fun from 11:00-17:00. The Howth Coast Guard Station and the RNLI Station are open for visitors. And there are craft stalls, History exhibitions and Music performances in the Arts & Heritage Marquee. Live music is available also in the evenings and on Sunday during the day in Pubs and Restaurants and Family Entertainment will be on the Village Square.

In previous years, the programme on the website gave a nice and useful indication of which events were free and which weren’t with just a Euro sign behind the event. This year, the person putting the events up wasn’t as visitor friendly. You can still see last years list of full day events here. The events are the same again and still have the Euro sign indicator. The new events list for Saturday and Sunday unfortunately lost that useful feature.

It is a wonderful weekend out if the weather is good because you have some good food, some markets and can go for walk on the Pier or around Howth Head. if the weather is not so good, you still have plenty of pubs and restaurants in Howth to at least enjoy some prawns.

The Merchants Market on East Wall Road is a weekly indoors flea market on Saturdays and Sundays with more than 80 stalls in a big industrial hall. There is everything from furniture and antiques to paintings and mirrors, electronics and hot food to bicycles and buns. It is just a few minutes walk away from the Point Theatre/O2 (walk in the direction of the Port Tunnel).

The Ark in Temple Bar runs many really good events, but due to the cost of running this cultural centre for children, most events are not free. But every now and then, there is a free event or exhibition and they are always worth a visit.

This time it is an exhibition (for ages 4+) called “Once upon a Picture”: Every artwork has a story to tell! Sometimes worlds cross over and strange things happen – humans take on animal form, objects shrink or grow, people dream enchanted dreams and things are not always as they seem. Let your imagination run wild as you explore this exhibition of artworks that are mysterious, alluring and magical. Have fun imagining what the artworks are about and what stories they tell.

A new market (flea/vintage/etc) with two cafés has opened in the same location in Thomas Street where the Ferocious Mingle Market was before their move to Camden Street.

The new market in 72 Thomas Street is called Stable Market and it is open from Thursday until Sunday from 10:00-18:00 every day. It seems there is neither a website nor a Facebook Page yet.

The Temple Bar Markets (Food Market on Meeting House Square, Book Market on Temple Bar Square and the Designer Mart near Cow’s Lane) are taking place every Saturday from 10:00-16:30.

The theme of the 16th edition of the Franco-Irish Literary Festival is Crime Fiction / Festival du Polar. This will be discussed by 14 Irish and French writers and roundtables, readings and book sales will take place over this weekend. The Festival is organized by the Alliance Française and the French Embassy.

The main day of the Festival on Saturday is full of events and it will take place in Dublin Castle. The only event on Sunday is a Literary Brunch from 11:00-13:00 and it will be in the Alliance Francaise.

The Union of Students in Ireland is inviting to a World Record Attempt for “building” the biggest human love heart in the world as part of their Marriage Equality Campaign.

They need 1000 people for it and everybody needs to register (probably so that you can be officially counted) but unfortunately they closed registration already many hours before the event. 100 years ago on 25 April 1915 during the first World War, the Battle of Gallipoli happened and a lot of Irish soldiers were involved with the British Army.

To commemorate the event, a Re-enactment by “The Lord Edward’s Own” will take place and there will be displays of military weaponry, a field hospital, medals and badges and a WWI trench mock-up. Come and experience a soldier’s life.

Digiwise is a family programme to learn how to use social media apps in a safe way. It consists of two classes: The first one is for parents only. The well known Palestrina Choir sing every Sunday at the mass in St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral. They sing complete masterworks by Mozart, Haydn, Dvorak, Palestrina, de Victoria, usually accompanied by Prof. Gerard Gillen on the organ, who often also plays a solo piece.

The Sundays at Noon Concert Series continues in the Sculpture Gallery at the Hugh Lane Gallery. This series of free (mainly classical) concerts continues to present the best of Irish and International music and musicians. Concerts run from September to June.

An Intercultural Tour in Japanese Language with Community Ambassador Hiromi Anzai will take place.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. The Progressive Film Club regularly shows progressive films from all over the world about struggles for people’s rights, for the rights of workers, of immigrants, of women, for national liberation and for social justice.

This Saturday and Sunday a Cuban Film Festival will bring you 3 films on Saturday and 4 films on Sunday (mix of short and feature films). All films are in Spanish with English subtitles and all details can be found on the website below.

The last “Up Close with Music” concert in this years Spring Series, by contemporary music ensemble “Concorde” will be run in the Royal Hibernian Academy.

The focus is on new Irish music in an international context and the programme showcases new commissions by Irish composers Linda Buckley, Ed Bennett and Jane O’Leary. Following submission of over 250 scores from composers around the world, Concorde has selected music from the USA, Scotland, Spain, Finland, Australia, Iceland, Hong Kong, Portugal, England and Sweden to feature alongside works by Irish composers.

The concert will run from 14:30-15:15 and from 15:45-16:30. Admission is free.

Lar Joye, curator of the ‘Soldiers & Chiefs’ exhibition will talk about the 1916 Rising in military terms. Suitable for adults and young people aged 14+.

Unlike the three branches of the National Museum, the National Print Museum is normally not free, but every Sunday there is a free public tour for the next few weeks. Every visit begins with a short audio-visual presentation where the audience can observe active retired printers providing practical demonstrations of machines from the Museum’s collection.

“An image in the context of its time: Le Brocquy’s ‘A Family’, 1951” is the title of this week’s Sunday talk with Catherine Marshall (Writer, Editor, Curator, and freelance Art Historian).

Brian Keary is a classically trained guitar player who also has experience of different styles / genres of music ranging from ragtime and folk to baroque and contemporary. He will perform in Sweeney’s (Ground Floor) on Sunday afternoon.

The next Dublin Vintage Factory Kilo Sale is on Sunday in the Hangar (former Andrew Lane Theatre). The sale starts at 12:00, but for the time slots from 12:00-18:00 tickets had to be bought via Eventbrite and they are all sold out.

The good news is, however, that after 18:00 you don’t need any tickets and access is freely available. Stock will be replenished throughout the day, so even if you come in the evening slot, you still have a good chance of getting a bargain. Clothes are sold at EUR 20 per kilo.

Every Sunday this singer-songwriter night takes place in the Bleeding Horse in Camden St. from 8.30pm. It is an Open mic night and performers can just turn up and put their name on the list for that night.

The Samung sponsored 10km Night Run in the Docklands will happen in Sunday evening. Start is near Customs House and the Finish line is at Jury’s Hotel on teh Northside.

The race will go towards the Point Theatre and the Port Tunnel entrance and will also cover the area around Grand Canal Square. A race map is on the website if you are interested.

Registration is closed and wasn’t free anyway, but if you want to see and cheer on a few thousand runners in the night on Sunday, this event is a free event for you as a spectator.

The history of Irish monasticism, from St. Patrick to the “wanderers” for Christ, is extremely interesting. There are Irish monks everywhere in the known world (in Britain, Scotland, France, Switzerland, Belgium, Italy, Slovakia, Russia, Iceland, Greenland, America) and their skills and their knowledge of reading and bookmaking, made them counsellors in Charlemagne’s Court, founders of monasteries, cities and universities, teachers and educators, publishers and very well respected figures in other fields.

Enzo Farinella is a journalist, ANSA’s (Italian News Agency) bureau chief for Ireland and a Vatican Radio correspondent. He was born in Gangi (Sicily) and has been living in Ireland for over 40 years.

The Dublin based human rights and solidarity organisation Grupo Raices (Grúpa Fréamhacha) in collaboration with the Ireland Institute invite you to discuss the legacy of Roger Casement in his struggle for the rights of the Putumayo Indians, in the Colombian-Peruvian Amazon, and the situation there 100 years on.

The Critical Take is a monthly film club and panel discussion about films that are shown in the IFI.

This month’s panel is made up of Darryl Jones (Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at TCD), Alicia McGivern (Head of Education at the IFI) and writer and filmmaker Stephen Campbell.

Join them for a discussion on the re-issue of Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner from 1982, the Cannes Jury Prize-winning Force Majeure from Ruben Östlund and Irish director Gerard Barrett’s Glassland.

“You Can’t Always Get What You Want” by Prof John Naughton (Senior Research Fellow in the Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities (CRASSH) at the University of Cambridge) is a public lecture that looks at what was intended and what became of the Internet. The lecture traces the evolution of the Internet from its early days, outlines the forces that have shaped it and argues that we need to rethink both our attitudes to it and our public discourse about it.

The public lecture is organised by the ADAPT Centre, the School of Law, the School of Languages, Literature and Cultural Studies and the Confederal School of Religions, Theology and Peace Studies.

Trinity College has set up a Research Ethics Stem Cell Working Group in order to formalise Research Ethics procedures especially when it comes to Stem Cell research. This working group will have their first meeting on Wednesday and as a precursor to the meeting an open lecture by Prof Lee Kok Onn (Senior Consultant, and Head of Division of Endocrinology, School of Medicine, National University of Singapore) on the cultural differences between East and West regarding Stem Cell research will take place.

The Marriage Equality Referendum campaigns don’t come with a good discussion about the topic. There seems to be a vast majority on the Yes side and a some strange non-arguments on the No side, but this discussion could be interesting and heated: The question that will be discussed is “Would a No Vote be Good for Irish Society?” and arguing for a Yes vote in the Referendum are Max Krzyzanowski and Brendan Butler and arguing for a No vote are Susan Philips and Tom Carew.

22 Cooleen is an experimental creative collective that has undertaken the ambitious challenge of writing, recording and producing a music album over the month of April. Friends and strangers from all over the world, both professional and amateur, have gathered in their house at 22 Cooleen Avenue to contribute to this project. 22 Cooleen is a non-profit project, driven purely by the love for music.

On Thursday the project will come to an end with an finale at Sweeney’s, where the finished album will be performed.

Everyone is welcome to witness what 22 Cooleen have managed to create during the course of a month and admission is free. You can also buy the finished album there.

Duvet – the Best of Soul and Funk will play in The Church, featuring Felim Gormley of The Commitments on sax.

Every Thursday a Singer Songwriter Night will take place in Mother Reilly’s in Rathmines. This is YOUR chance to show everyone what you can do, alternatively you can just listen to the talented Singer/Songwriters. Admission is free.

A Fun Pub Quiz takes place in Brady’s in Terenure on Thurs. The quiz will be on every Thursday night in the Lounge at Brady’s. Keith McLoughlin is the Quiz Master.

There will be six rounds of the quiz with picture questions, audio questions and general knowledge questions. Admission to the quiz is free and therr will be free drink vouchers for the winning and runner up teams. (No phones to get answers allowed.)

Every Tuesday and Thursday the International Bar invites to a Jazz night in the Lounge.

Groups led by Cote Calmet, Sean Maynard Smith, Dominic Mullan, Paddy Groenland, Georgia Cusack & Alex Mathias are performing regularly with occasional guest players, but there are also other bands from all over.

Admission is free, with a suggested donation of EUR 5. The website clearly says that there is no entry fee, but – and that makes a lot of sense – that your donations are very much appreciated (Musicians need to pay for rent and food too!) Be generous after the gig if you liked it, but if someone wants to charge an admission charge, please point out that the “rules” as described on their website are like I have explained.

Every Thursday “Left Right & Centre” play a mix of blues & soul with a bit of rock&roll.

Every Thursday a free Trad Session takes place in McNeills and often there are high profile Trad musicians performing.

The yearly Woolshed Karaoke Competition is running from 23 Apr-30 May. The heats are happening every Thursday and the semi finals are on 14+21 May, with the Grand Final being held on 30 May.

Entry to the competition is free and anyone can participate. Just put your name down on the night. The overall winner will get to record a CD at Temple Lane Studios in Dublin.

If you don’t want to enter the competition you can still come along and sing for fun. Every singer will get a free drink.

The Bealtaine Festival “celebrates creativity as we age” and is in essence a month long festival for older people organised by Age and Opportunity, but the term “older people” is a difficult one because we more think of elderly people or old people, but Bealtaine is definitely open for everybody from around 55.

It is a nationwide programme with dance to cinema, painting to theatre and any other type of creative pursuits you could think of.

All events will be listed on teh website below and the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will include a selection of events every week until the end of May.

The festival starts on Friday 01 May and runs until Sunday 31 May. It is organised by “Age & Opportunity”.

The Green Door Market is a new indoor food/Farmer’s Market that takes place just a few doors down from the Dublin Food Co-op at Newmarket in Dublin 8. Admission is free.

The Science Gallery exhibition “HOME\SICK – Post-Domestic Bliss” looks at the Home and asks what “Home” really is.

The word means something different to everyone, but how will the future of technology and design, communities, families, resources, and nations change the nature of what we define as ‘home’? Is it a uniquely human construct, a right, a state of mind, or a place? From migration to innovation, and from a constitutional right of ‘home’ to the future of homes beyond Earth, the exhibition will give answers and ask more questions.

The exhibition will run from 01 May until 19 July and is open from Tuesday-Sunday (Tues-Fri: 12:00-20:00, Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00). Admission is free.

Lorraine Gavin will perform a lunchtime recital in St. Ann’s. Admission is free, but donations are welcome.

Meet the artists, scientists, designers and curators of thhe new Science Gallery exhibition, HOME\SICK: Post-Domestic Bliss.

In a series of short talks, the contributors to HOME\SICK will explore everything from family rituals to ownership, lighthouses to building houses. Find out how science and art are asking the tough questions about our definition of ‘home’ and how we might reconfigure it in the future.

Bunk are an instrumental funk soul quartet from Dublin. They will be in the Harbour Bar for a free gig in connection with the Bray Jazz Festival.
