A weekly car boot sale, one of less than a handful that is still reliably taking place, has up to 200 cars/sellers. The stadium is just a few minutes walk from the Red LUAS line stop and numerous bus stops. For traders the Car Boot Sale opens at 06:30 for buyers from 08:00. The weekly Honest2goodness food market in Glasnevin has fresh meat, vegetables, fish, baked goods, and wines. It is open from 09:30-16:00. It is behind Lidl in the Industrial Estate just after the Glasnevin Cemetary coming from the City Centre.

Parkrun Ireland is organising free weekly runs in parks. It is a timed run over 5km and participation is completely free, but registration before your first parkrun is required.

But there are quirky things as well, like the Jukebox that will guess your age by taking your pulse rate and playing a song from your teenage years. And there are some practical aspects: You can take a test that will determine your blood type and you can find out what happens to to donated blood in Ireland.

An interesting exhibition, but different than what you have seen before in the Science Gallery and that is reflected by the recommendation that the exhibition is only suitable for over 15 year olds.

If you are ok with the focus on this red substance that makes some of us a bit queasy when we think about it, you should definitely go to the exhibition (and bring an open mind ;-) ). But if blood makes your knees wobbly, then it might not be for you.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

Every visit begins with a short audio-visual presentation where the audience can observe active retired printers providing practical demonstrations of machines from the Museum’s collection.

The RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra are inviting to the Horizons Contemporary Music Series 2015, a yearly concert series that features contemporary composers. The composer on Tuesday is Grainne Mulvey and there concert will start at 13:00. There will be a conversation between the director of the Contemporary Music Centre (Evonne Ferguson) and Grainne Mulvey before the concert at 12:30.

First Fortnight is an Arts Festival that wants to challenge mental health prejudices through creative arts so that people find it easier to start a conversation about mental health.

The festival will run from 01-14 Jan in Dublin and lots of different events are planned. Some of the events are free, others not. I will list here the free events, but I strongly suggest that you also have a look at the non-free events, if mental health and arts is of interest to you.

The first free events is on Fri 02 Jan and will take place in the Octagonal Gallery of the City Assembly House, South William Street, Dublin 2.

“I Have To Say, I Have To Say” explores suicide amongst migrants. The work stemmed from the death of the artist’s former housemate, a Polish woman living in Ireland. Told through sculptural installation, video and performances, the work looks at the connections between Poland and Ireland,

It was performed at the festival opening on 02 Jan and on 09 Jan and a last lunchtime performance (30 mins) is on 13 Jan at 13:00. Admission is free.

The Workman’s Club Table Tennis Competition “Battle of the Paddles” is back and runs on 13,14 and 15 January.

On Tuesday and Wednesday the qualification rounds take place. Arrive from 19:00 and put your name on the list. The tournament starts at 20:00 and will continue until a winner is determined. The winners from each night will compete in the “Super Smash Final” on Thursday.

User Not Found is a work in development by Stefanie Preissner, an accomplished screenwriter, playwright and actor, and will be performed in the festival as a reading. It is part of the First Fortnight Festival.

This is what Rachel’s friends found out when she went missing. Trying to make sense of what has happened they attempt to piece together her last statuses and tweets.”

This is an information talk for Senior Cycle Parents on preparing for a successful transition from second level to third level.

The talk is designed to empower and prepare parents by informing them about the many issues that influence success in the first year of study after the Leaving Certificate. Developed from a third level perspective, it looks at the changing relationships between students, teachers, parents and schools and addresses the many challenges faced by students making this transition.

The afternoon Lecture “Immigrants and an Irish Diaspora? – Tracing the genetic origins of the Irish flora” with Colin Kelleher takes place on Wednesday.

“The Irish flora is composed of a combination of species assumed to have migrated from diverse geographical origins. Questions about these origins have intrigued naturalists for centuries. In this lecture Colin Kelleher of the National Botanic Gardens will present some recent evidence from genetic analysis, which is providing surprising insight into the origins of our flora.”

The Centre for Contemporary Irish History Seminar Series continues with the lecture “The role and effect of violence on the Ulster Defence Regiment in South Armagh” by Dr Stephen Herron (QUB).

The “Havana International Language Exchange” is taking place every Wed from 16:30-19:30 in Havana Tapas Bar in George’s Street. There are many Spanish speakers and English-speakers are explicitly invited, but everyone else is certainly very welcome too, to meet for a chat to improve your Spanish or English.

“Crack the Content Code” is a talk by Lorraine Griffin (Associate Lecturer on NCI’s Certificate in Digital Marketing course) about how to create quality digital content.

The Workman’s Club Table Tennis Competition “Battle of the Paddles” is back and runs on 13,14 and 15 January.

On Tuesday and Wednesday the qualification rounds take place. Arrive from 19:00 and put your name on the list. The tournament starts at 20:00 and will continue until a winner is determined. The winners from each night will compete in the “Super Smash Final” on Thursday.

You can come to participate or to spectate, if you want to participate make sure that you come early enough because places are limited.

The King Kong Club is a weekly music game-show in the Mercantile. Each week 6-7 bands/solo artists play three songs each. At the end of all the performances a clap-off with the King Kong Club Clap-o-Meter takes place and the winner goes through to a semi-final and it all culminates after six months of competition with The Grand Final, held in front of a panel of celebrity judges.

The Anseo Comedy Club, run by comedian Aidan Killian, has decided to remove the admission charges. Great news!! It takes place every Wednesday in Anseo (upstairs). Donations are welcome.

“The Song Room” is another open mic event. It takes place in The Globe in George’s Street at 20:30 every Wednesday.

“The Zodiac Sessions” is a regular open mic event from 20:30 in Bruxelles (between Grafton Street and Westbury Hotel) for unsigned musicians. Admission is free and there is a different line-up every week.

Bad Boy Jake are every Wednesday in the Gypsy Rose Rock & Blues Bar playing their rock, blues and American.

The lunchtime lecture “Marys and Martyrs in the Coëtivy Hours” with Dr Jill Unkel (Curator of the Western Collections, Chester Beatty Library) will take place.

Unfortunately there is no explanation as to what that title means or refers to, so maybe the lecture is mainly for insiders? ;-) But a little bit of research explained that the Book of Hours by the Coëtivy Masters is a 15th century manuscript from France. Maybe that helps!

The first lecture in the ‘Reflections and Insights’ series of free lunchtime lectures by the five editors of Volume IV: Architecture of the Royal Irish Academy’s “Art and Architecture of Ireland” is

The Lecture “Chinese and Himalayan Plants for the Irish Garden” with Martin Walsh takes place on Thursday in the Visitor Centre and is organised by the Irish Garden Plant Society and the Alpine Garden Society.

“Garden designer, plant collector, and regular expedition member Martin Walsh, well known for his excellent pictures, will share his alpine and woody plant choices for our temperate conditions, particularly for woodland.”

The Max Zaska group and the Patrick Groenland group will perform on alternating Thursdays from 21:00 in the International Bar on 23 Wicklow Street.

A Fun Pub Quiz takes place in Brady’s in Terenure on Thurs. The quiz will be on every Thursday night in the Lounge at Brady’s. Keith McLoughlin is the Quiz Master.

There will be six rounds of the quiz with picture questions, audio questions and general knowledge questions. Admission to the quiz is free and therr will be free drink vouchers for the winning and runner up teams. (No phones to get answers allowed.)

The weekly European Folk Dance Workshop/Session takes place in the Tap Bar every Friday.

The dances are French, Greek, Italian, Hungarian, Polish, Portuguese folk and traditional dances and everybody interested to join in or to learn is welcome. Admission is free, but donations (suggested: EUR 3) are very welcome
