Hi all!
I know many of you will think that I lost the plot. This Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is the earliest out in many many months. But the reason for it is that I am away this weekend. I started working on it on Wednesday and worked through two nights non-stop, because as soon as it is sent on its way, I will get into my car to drive to Galway. Keeva and Sid will get married there tomorrow. Congratulations!!!! :-)
So, I will be away until Monday evening. Party hard, but don’t wreck the gaff! ;-) You will hear from me while I am away if you check the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page regularly, so you won’t have to miss me. :-D
I mentioned last week that both donations AND new subscriptions have dropped a good bit over the last 3-4 weeks, so I need your help!
Sponsorship, like the one from the sponsors (including Eventbrite) helps hugely to take a certain amount of pressure off me, but it is not enough! I need to make some urgent changes to the system that I use and need someone who is good at CakePHP programming and SQL databases. That will cost! So please continue your financial support. You can help here: www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm I am also looking for some additional corporate sponsors. Maybe two or three companies that are prepared to help with a little more than the individual donations of around 12 Euro. If you know anybody, send them my way. :-) Regarding your donation, I am suggesting the super low amount of just EUR 1 per month. These EUR 12 is just 2 pints and for the equivalent of 2 pints you get 52 issues full of information about free cultural events. That’s DEFINITELY worth 2 pints, isn’t it!? Please…and Thanks! :-)
And finally – I can’t say it often enough: Please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 22,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 52,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
This week the Feel Good slot is quote again and again I don’t know who said it first, but it is good and that’s why I am sharing it with you:
Every time it rains, it stops raining. Every time you get hurt, you heal. After darkness there is always light – although we are reminded of this every morning, somehow we forget and choose to believe that the night will last forever.
Remember that every day! And especially on the days that you wish hadn’t happened.

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
Last week Noelle H, Paul M. and Sarah S. supported the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. I really really really appreciate all the help! Without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to here and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

The main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.
All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This week, there is mainly blood and gore in the Dublin Event Guide. ;-) A crazy amount of Halloween events and half of them I couldn’t even mention because they were booked out already (at the Bram Stoker Festival). If you don’t like Halloween, lock yourself away, you will hardly be able to avoid it, but if you like it, this week is YOUR week!
I won’t be in Dublin at all this weekend, so I will leave the decision which of the events is the best to you, but have a good look because some are not very obviously good! Search for the hidden diamonds as well. ;-)

The Beatles Show – Ticket Competition
Sunday 09 November – 13:30
Twisted Pepper, 54 Middle Abbey Street, Dublin 1
The Beatles Festival in Dublin will take place from 07-09 November. One of the events during the festival is The Beatles Show.
The Beatles Show will consist of a performance of the comic play “Death and the Beatles Fan” plus Beatle songs performed live by Vyvienne Long and Jonathan Ward. Vyvienne is a very talented singer-songwriter who has released two solo albums and a brilliant Beatles EP. She has played cello with many Irish and international musicians – and is best known for her work with Damien Rice. She has also enjoyed huge radio hits with her own song ‘Happy Thoughts’ – and her cover version of ‘Seven Nation Army’ by The White Stripes. Here is her great cover version of ‘And I Love Her’: www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXIYO7MyppU
Tickets for the show are EUR12 each and can be bought here: entertainment.ie/tickets/dublinbeatlesfestival/5041.htm
And for one Dublin Event Guide reader The Beatles Show will be free, because I have a pair of tickets for a competition for you! If you want to enter, send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with BSHOW in the subject line and with your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Your mail has to be with me by 12:00 on Tuesday 04 November.
And here is some more information about the Beatles Festival:

If you want to reach more than 20,000 people with a product promotion or an event promotion for a non-free event, contact me on dublineventguide@gmail.com and we can discuss the options. In most cases there are no charges to you (apart from making some tickets or some of your products available for free).
And if you want me to do use your product and write an assessment here in the Dublin Event Guide, we can talk about that too. I like testing out gear. ;-)

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository
Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon
LivingSocial
When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:
HMV | O2 | Vodafone | Pixmania
Expedia | Lastminute.com | Hotels.com
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Vampires in town!
Checkout the statues on O’Connell Street! The Vampires have arrived. The statues were all equipped with capes. Good idea!
And also check out the Vampwire, a zip line on Wolfe Tone Square. Tickets were given out by lottery, so you won’t be able to get to use it if you don’t have a ticket, but it is also a good event for the Bram Stoker festival.
Nice ideas, Dublin City (‘s Events Planners)!

Do you have News about Dublin? Send them over! ;-)
Every week I try to include some news about Dublin here. During the week I take note of anything I come across, but some week’s I am too busy with other things or forget or can’t find anything. If you have any news about things happening in Dublin, send them to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will happily mention you if I use the news you send me. Thanks!

TV3 Audience Tickets
TV3 has some audience tickets for a pre-record of Jason Byrne’s Snaptastic on Tuesday 28 Oct from 13:00. The recording should last just 1 hour. Special Guest on the show is Mark Watson.

Sooooo, here is the change for this section: The plan is to change its use from “Opportunities” to a section that will bring you the best events that Eventbrite, the main sponsor of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events), promotes. The vast majority of the events listed here will be free, but sponsors have some additional liberties and if it is a really good event, there might sometimes be a non-free event in the list as well. (It will be properly tagged!)
With the change of use of this area, I will also see if I can change the title of it, but I have long left the field of programming, so I will see what I can do. Which brings me to a question I wanted to ask you anyway: Are there any Cake PHP programmers in the house? Let me know if you are!
EVENTBRITE’S FREE EVENT PICKS FOR THE WEEK:
Carve your own pumpkin
‘Tis the season to be scary: Starting next Tuesday at 16:00, the Beerhouse in Capel Street invites you to drink a seasonal craft pumpkin ale and carve and display your own pumpkin for Halloween! Pumpkins are provided for free and hollowed out beforehand. Free registration here.
Learn to live with less
At age 30, Joshua and Ryan left their six-figure corporate careers, got rid of most of their material possessions, and began living more deliberately. Come listen to them speak about their journey into the simple life, followed by a short reading from their new book, a brief Q&A session, and an optional book signing. Free registration here.
Discover your inner artist
The Centre for Creative Practices runs a monthly artistic entrepreneurs networking night next Tuesday. Come along and mix, talk, drink and listen to pitches, talks, discussions and maybe some music. Register here.

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Shaped by History
01 Aug – 05 Jan (Mon-Sat: 10:00-17:00, Sun: 12:00-17:00)
National Photographic Archive, Meeting House Square, Dublin 2
Shaped by History features 95 black and white photographs of Limerick Milk Market taken between 1971 and 1978 by Limerick social documentary photographer Gerry Andrews.
Limerick Milk Market was founded in 1852, as the west of Ireland was emerging from the famines of the 1840s. In the 1970s, Limerick Milk Market was at a crossroads in its long history, as the Shannon/Limerick region began transforming into a national and international model for development.

Blood – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 20:00, Fri 24 Oct
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
BLOOD is the title of the new Science Gallery exhibition that will run from 24 Oct – 25 Jan.
25 exhibits explore the symbolic, scientific and strange nature of blood and there are certainly some “out there” contributions. For example the video and relics from a bio-art performance where an artist had a blood transfusion form a horse. Or a spoof brand that uses bloodstain-formed fashion accessories addressing the stigma about men strual blood.
But there are quirky things as well, like the Jukebox that will guess your age by taking your pulse rate and playing a song from your teenage years. And there are some practical aspects: You can take a test that will determine your blood type and you can find out what happens to to donated blood in Ireland.
An interesting exhibition, but different than what you have seen before in the Science Gallery and that is reflected by the recommendation that the exhibition is only suitable for over 15 year olds.
If you are ok with the focus on this red substance that makes some of us a bit queasy when we think about it, you should definitely go to the exhibition (and bring an open mind ;-) ). But if blood makes your knees wobbly, then it might not be for you.
Admission to the exhibition is free

Blood – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 25 Oct

Blood on the Streets: Performance Lecture
19:30, Sat 25 Oct
Butcher Barber, 11 Johnsons Court, Dublin 2
Sweeney Todd allegedly bled his victims to death before dumping them out of his barbers chair into the basement. But many barbers around that time were interested in blood letting to heal, not to kill. Blood on the Streets is series of public performance lectures that will all take place in the window of a babershop.
On Saturday “The Butcher Barbers” will host Jamie Lewis Hadley and Dr Natasha Malik as they expose the history of bloodletting as a medical practice, tracing its roots in ancient medicine, the rise of the barber-surgeon and our current understanding of this incredible substance. Through a combination of live text, projected images and re-enactment, the key figures, instruments and (often unbelievable) techniques will be explored.
Note: This peformance lecture involves one packet of blood being extracted from Jamie Lewis Hadley’s arm.
Admission is free and no booking required. During the event the audience will be outside on the street.

Check your clocks!!
08:00, Sun 26 Oct
Dublin (various locations)
Check your clocks! Last night Summer Time ended, which means that the ckocl went BACK by one hour and it would mess up your events schedule today if you forgot.
If you have a smartphone, do NOT change the time on it! Smartphones and computers are summer time aware and do the change by themselves. If you also change the time when you go to bed you will have the wrong time in the morning. BUT in case your phone isn’t smart enough or forgot about the change, check against an old (non-smart clock) to see if all worked fine.
In the worst case ring yout neighbours door and tell him/her: I don’t need any sugar, but I need your time! That could have interesting consequences. :-P

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 26 Oct
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.
There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Housing Co-ops: How to set one up – Talk
15:00 – 18:00, Sun 26 Oct
Teachers Club, 36 Parnell Square West, Dublin 1
Co-operative housing could offer a way out of the precarious rental market and the trap of long-term mortgage debt, according to Donal O’Driscoll, a member of UK-based co-op network Radical Routes, who will explain how to set such a housing co-op up at this event.
“The model of co-operative housing is well-established in the UK where legal recognition and corporation tax exemptions make the process of setting up a co-op relatively straightforward,” says Donal.
The Radical Routes network has over 35 member co-ops throughout the UK which are residential projects of all shapes and sizes as well as a number of workers co-operatives.
Admission seems to be free.

15:30 – 19:30, Sun 26 Oct
Marlay Park, Rathfarnham, Dublin 16
The yearly Samhain Haunted Forest Walk is coming back to Marlay Park.
“This year’s Samhain will feature a longer route of spook than ever before with more scare footage of chills, freaks and frights than you can shake a broom at. The forest at Marlay Park will be alive, for one night only with freaky fog, ghastly spiders, all seeing eyeballs, spine chilling skeletons, menacing witches and wizards and rotten pirates.
Festoon lighting, sound effects and smoke will all add to the scare factor with the haunted forest open 20:30. The haunted forest is not for the faint hearted or easily freaked! The walk is approx 1.7km long on a path suitable for buggies and wheelchairs.”

Dublin City Marathon
08:50, Mon 27 Oct
Dublin (various locations)
This is not a free event and if you hadn’t planned to run 42 km, now would be a little late to opt for it anyway, but it is a BIG event in Dublin and many people take part by supporting the runners from the side of the street.
Around 13,000 people take part and the first wave of runners starts at 09:00, but the Wheelchair users are already at 08:50 on their way. And then it takes the fastest runners just about 2 hours and 20 minutes (Wheelchairs: 2hrs 30 min) to get from start to finish. The slowest walkers will be 7.5 (!!) hours on the course.
The start is at Fitzwilliam Square and the finish at Merrion Square and you can check the complete route and the times here. I remember that the race course was – at least for the last few kilometres – quite different in previous years, so check the map to find out where you should support the runners/walkers.
Due to the Marathon, quite a number of streets are closed and getting into and out of Dublin City is not completely trivial. Information about street closures is on the AA Ireland website.

Macnas – Halloween Parades
17:00, Mon 27 Oct
Dublin (various locations)
“Macnas take to the streets of Dublin as mercurial tailors with a glee for stitching laughter to darkness, summoning monsters and marvels from drains, lanes and street corners. Creatures , characters, contortions dissolve and are remade and revealed.
Macnas populate this journey with mischief, active imagination, baptism and burial. These new priests and madmen whistle and unleash from the shadows, a haunted air heralding in the slumbering descent of countless agitations on high as they close the night upon the city like a trap door.”
The three routes of the parade are:
1. City Hall towards Capel Street, left at Nealon’s Pub towards Arran Street East and then Mary Street
2. Essex Street, through Temple Bar and Temple Bar Square, then crossing the Milennium Bridge
3. Moore Street, Henry Street, Wolfe Tone Square
A map is on the website below and you will see that it all leads to Wolfetone Square!

There is nothing wrong in enticing people to come to a pub a bit earlier, we all need to make money somehow. But maybe announcing a gig for 20:00-03:00 that possibly only takes place at midnight and lasts for 1.5 hours or so, is stretching that understanding for the commercial needs a little.

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!
Christmas Madness in October
It HAS to be done! I can not NOT mention the madness and oddness of Christmas Lights going up in Grafton Street on 21 October. Even I got used to seeing Advents Calenders, Lebkuchen (Ginger bread) and other unique Christmas food products well before Halloween, but hanging up the Christmas lights in Grafton Street before the end of October is just mad!
I’d suggest that we leave them hanging! Why would Dublin City [or is it Dublin Town (the business association in the Inner City, including Grafton Street)? ] waste the money it costs to take the lights down in January? For these remaining 10 months we could leave the lights hanging and, hey, maybe we should leave them switched on. Because the logic for already hanging them up and ALREADY switching them on on 13 November (MAD people!) should suggest that if we leave the lights all year around, this will increase the money people spend. Maybe they would buy Christmas presents then in March!?

It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
