A weekly car boot sale, one of less than a handful that is still reliably taking place, has up to 200 cars/sellers. The stadium is just a few minutes walk from the Red LUAS line stop and numerous bus stops. For traders the Car Boot Sale opens at 06:30 for buyers from 08:00. The weekly Honest2goodness food market in Glasnevin has fresh meat, vegetables, fish, baked goods, and wines. It is open from 09:30-16:00. It is behind Lidl in the Industrial Estate just after the Glasnevin Cemetary coming from the City Centre.

Parkrun Ireland is organising free weekly runs in parks. It is a timed run over 5km and participation is completely free, but registration before your first parkrun is required.

The Merchants Market on East Wall Road is a weekly indoors flea market on Saturdays and Sundays with more than 80 stalls in a big industrial hall. There is everything from furniture and antiques to paintings and mirrors, electronics and hot food to bicycles and buns. It is just a few minutes walk away from the Point Theatre/O2 (walk in the direction of the Port Tunnel).

The Ranelagh Arts Festival takes place from 12-28 September. Lots of events will take place and a good few of them are free.

A new market (flea/vintage/etc) with two cafés has opened in the same location in Thomas Street where the Ferocious Mingle Market was before their move to Camden Street.

The new market in 72 Thomas Street is called Stable Market and it is open from Thursday until Sunday from 10:00-18:00 every day. It seems there is neither a website nor a Facebook Page yet.

The Temple Bar Markets (Food Market on Meeting House Square, Book Market on Temple Bar Square and the Designer Mart near Cow’s Lane) are taking place every Saturday from 10:00-16:30.

Trust in the Green is a free music event to raise awareness about the issue of mental health and suicide prevention and the support that is available.

Musicians, face painters, poets, motivational speakers and volunteers get together to celebrate life and to raise money for Pieta House who provide a free, therapeutic approach to people who are in suicidal distress and people who engage in self harm.

The line-up is The Bionic Rats, Ras Tinny, Mr Upfull, Kiruu, Revelation Sound System, Pia Dunne & The Elusians, DJ Tommy Rash, Plutonic Dust, Patricia Lohan and the MC is Soom T.

Nutgrove Arts Festival is an annual celebration of community arts and culture, taking place in the unique setting of Nutgrove Shopping Centre. It willl run from 26 Sept – 05 Oct and the full festival brochure can be downloaded here.

On Saturday there will be Trad music sessions, wood carving demonstration, Dance performances (Ballet, Indian, Irish), a Karate demonstration and a Kids Disco.

On Sunday a Latvian Dance Performance will take place, Magician/Artist Magna Toth will perform and African dancers will show you their talent.

At the Blackrock Market in the centre of Blackrock, you’ll find 50 stalls selling collectibles, antiques, handmade goods, books, food & there’s free popcorn, ballons & facepainting for the kids.

A Family Activity Weekend with Archery, Wall Climbing, Mountain Biking, Zorbing and lots more will take place on Saturday and Sunday. All free!

On Sunday from 14:00-16:00 “Carnivale” will play their music in the bandstand.

“Step into Autumn” is a fundraising event for the Young Leadership organisation Innovista.ie. There will be a Thrift Shop (Clothes and Accessories, Vintage clothes, etc), Hand Reflexology, Live Music and Afternoon Tea.

The purpose of the event is to raise funds for a mentorship programme for young people in the inner city, so there is a EUR 5 charge and you get coffee/tea and a scone in return for it. But I am told that you can come for free if you don’t want the coffee/tea/scone and in that case hopefully you will find something there to buy so that you can support the cause that way.

The Ferocious Mingle Marcade (Market and Arcade) is back in a new location. The Marcade is now in Camden Street next to Daintree Paper and opposite the Centra and off-license there. It takes place every Thurs-Sun and is a flea-market-type permanent market with stalls and “chalets” for traders.

This is the fifth year for “Yoga in the Park”, a brilliant initiative for a very worthy cause: From May until September, Tine from www.aditiyoga.org/ and her team of teachers invite to an hour of Yoga in Phoenix Park every Saturday. No booking is required.

The class is donation based, but all proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin and the suggested donation for this very good cause is EUR 5.

Just bring a mat or a towel, some water and (hopefully) even some sun protection to the class. Should the weather be bad, the bandstand will be shelter or even training location. The training is suitable for all levels, so even total beginners are very welcome.

The National Gallery has an extensive programme of free talks, public tours and Art Documentary screenings focusing on highlights of the European and Irish Collection every day of the week. Check their website for details.

The Dublin History Festival from 26 Sept – 08 Oct will offer you lots of talks about historical topics. The main event will be in Dublin Castle (Printworks) on 26-28 September. The full programme can be downloaded here.

The weekly Ha’penny Flea Market is an indoor market in the Grand Social Pub, which offers vintage Men and Women’s clothing, contemporary crafts, books, DVDs, vinyl records, vintage and handmade jewellery, vintage hair styles, art, photography and much more. Grand Social’s Bar and Gourmet Coffee options are available.

The hugely popular Oktoberfest in Dublin takes place from 18 Sept – 05 Oct again. It is a German Beer Festival with Erdinger Weissbräu Beer (including alcohol-free wheat beer), lots of German Bavarian Food and authentic Bavarian music.

Opening hours are Mon-Thurs 12:00-23:30, Fri+Sat: 12:00-00:30, Sun 12:00-22:30.

The best place to experience the festival is in the Festival Tent on the platform in George’s Dock. But because the yearly festival is soo popular, there are at times long queues because of the severe admission restrictions (quantity of people). Last year the queues already started at 17:30. Luckily around George’s Dock are more food and drink stalls so that you don’t HAVE to be in the Festival tent to enjoy the event. Pre-booking is possible, but check the cost.

Admission is free, but after 22:00 an odd wristband system kicks in whereby you have to buy a wristband for EUR 6 that gives you a EUR 5 food voucher (and 1 Euro goes to charity). Allegedly licensing rules force them to do that, but I never had to get a wristband in a pub to ensure that I have something to eat when I am there.

I get my yearly fix of Bavarian food at the Oktoberfest. The Schweinshaxn (pigs trotter) is a must for me, but just once a year. ;-)

The Science Gallery Summer Exhibition “Strange Weather: Forecasts from te Future” has opened on 18 July and will run until 05 October.

The exhibition explores how we understand, adapt to and control the changing weather and shows also a lot educational and even quirky bits around weather: A Raindrop hovering in mid-air, a Tornado Diverter, a Cloud Collector, Weather Models, a machine making house shaped clouds and an archive of old events from around the world that were (or are) impacted by weather and of new events emerging because of weather.

There are 26 exhibits and – like all Science Gallery exhibitions -, it is a really interesting exhibition. Well worth a visit with the whole family.

You can even be a TV weather man/woman in a professional studio set-up! An interesting experience!

“Angels in the Park” is a series of five 10-minute plays set in a park by new and established Irish writers. It will be performed as part of the Ranelagh Arts Festival at lunchtime daily from 22-27 September (Mon-Sat).

Directed by Aoibhinn Marie Gilroy, this year the Shiva Theatre Company will present three brand new plays: Footfall by Marisa O’Mahony, Secrets by Lorna Kelly Dalton, Life After Fred by Colum Kavanagh, alongside two favourites from last year, Across the Pond by Shane Fallon, and Nobody Smokes Anymore by Peter Sheridan. The show goes on rain or shine so bring your umbrella.

Archive at Lunchtime screenings take place Saturdays (Double Bill), Mondays and Wednesdays. The programme is changing weekly now (instead of monthly as in the past). And hear some tales you’ve never heard before!”

“Specs for Rex” by Yasmeen Ismail will be read in 27 Eason’s stores all over Ireland. In O’Connell Street the reading takes place at 14:00. In the other Eason Stores, the times vary between 11:00 and 15:00 (see website below).

A March for Choice organised by the Abortion Rights Campaign is taking place on Saturday. Meeting point is at the Garden of Remembrance, but that is where the details end. Nowhere I could find where the march goes to or if there are any speakers etc.

After the march is an After Party in the Filmbase in Temple Bar (from 16:00), but it will probably not surprise you if I tell you that nowhere I was able to find out if this is a free event or not. I would expect it is, but why do organisers not tell their potential audience!?!?! Pity!

On Saturday the third Repair Café will take place in Sandymount. This is a free workshop in a friendly café environment where you can bring down your broken items and learn how to repair them alongside expert volunteers.

The volunteers will attempt to repair anything you bring along on the day, while showing you how. From lamps to toys, hats to toasters, iphones to garden tools, jewellery and bicycles. Join in and find out from other local people how easy and satisfying it is to repair instead of buying new, learn new skills and save money in the process.

If you have nothing to repair, you can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee or share your skills and lend a hand with someone else’s repair job. There will be plenty for kids to do too.

Paul Howard, the author of the Ross O’Carroll Kelly books will be in Eason’s to sign his new book. Admissioin is free.

Sculpture in Context is a brilliant exhibition in the Botanic Gardens from Thurs 04 Sept – Fri 17 Oct and it is Ireland’s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition.

Every year a panel of selectors chooses sculptures from established and from upcoming artists and they will then be expertly placed in the garden setting of the Botanic Gardens and it makes a visit to the Botanic Gardens even more interesting then at other times.

“Trees and Games” at Deer Park is a family event and fun around and learning about trees. Tree age, height, feel a tree, folklore and more. A new series of Sunday morning talks “By the Book: Literature for Living” begins this Sunday in the TCD College Chapel.

Every second week a public figure (e,g, broadcaster Eileen Dunne, singer/songwriter Eleanor McEvoy and former South African ambassador to Ireland Melanie Verwoerd) will speak about the literature which inspires them.

The well known Palestrina Choir sing every Sunday at the mass in St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral. They sing complete masterworks by Mozart, Haydn, Dvorak, Palestrina, de Victoria, usually accompanied by Prof. Gerard Gillen on the organ, who often also plays a solo piece.

Allegedly licensing rules force them to do that, but I never had to get a wristband in a pub to ensure that I have something to eat when I am there.

I get my yearly fix of Bavarian food at the Oktoberfest. The Schweinshaxn (pigs trotter) is a must for me, but just once a year. ;-)

The Science Gallery Summer Exhibition “Strange Weather: Forecasts from te Future” has opened on 18 July and will run until 05 October.

The exhibition explores how we understand, adapt to and control the changing weather and shows also a lot educational and even quirky bits around weather: A Raindrop hovering in mid-air, a Tornado Diverter, a Cloud Collector, Weather Models, a machine making house shaped clouds and an archive of old events from around the world that were (or are) impacted by weather and of new events emerging because of weather.

There are 26 exhibits and – like all Science Gallery exhibitions -, it is a really interesting exhibition. Well worth a visit with the whole family.

You can even be a TV weather man/woman in a professional studio set-up! An interesting experience!

The Sundays at Noon Concert Series continues in the Sculpture Gallery at the Hugh Lane Gallery. This series of free (mainly classical) concerts continues to present the best of Irish and International music and musicians. Concerts run from September to June.

The next concert will feature the RTÉ Contempo Quartet with Zoe Conway (violin). They are performing pieces from Joseph Haydn, Elaine Agnew and Bill Whelan.

An Intercultural Tour in Japanese with Community Ambassador Hiromi Anzai will take place on Sunday. Admission is free.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Dr Michael Kennedy, historian and head of the Documents on Irish Foreign Policy series at the Royal Irish Academy reveals Irish perspectives on the Second World War, offering insights into the country’s first international crisis as an independent nation. His talk is entitled “At the edge of this mighty conflict – Neutral Ireland’s perspective on the Second World War” and it is suitable for adults.

Rogério from the Brazilian dance project “Forró de Lampião” in Dublin tells me: Forró de Lampião is Brazilian music that has the same roots as Samba and there is a whole culture that has developed around “forro”. “Rhythm Rocker at The Globe” is a weekly event on Sunday night in The Globe. Admission is free.

“Charity deserts, spatial justice, and the distribution of voluntary resources: bad science, evidence-free policy, and the politics of the “Big Society”” is the title of this talk by John Mohan (Professor of Social Policy at the University of Birmingham and Director Third Sector Research Centre, University of Birmingham).

The lecture is being held to mark the launch of Spatial Justice and the Irish Crisis edited by Gerry Kearns, David Meredith and John Morrissey.

The launch of Prof. John Wilson Foster’s new book “Pilgrims of the Air” will take place as part of the 22nd Meeting of the Irish Environmental History Network.

Good news, the great Alchemist Cafe is back with the first event since Januay. Alchemist Cafe is talk & discussion about a scientific topics in a relaxed atmosphere.

The Phoenix Big Band is a 16 piece band playing songs of the 1930s, 1940s and other big band arrangements and they are playing every Tuesday in the Tara Tower Hotel (since 2012!) for adult dancing. If you like to waltz, cha cha or foxtrot, come and enjoy their performance.

This practical free workshop, entitled “Basic Communication Skills at Work & in Interviews”, will tell you how to talk to people in interviews and at work. The workshop will be lead by James Hyde, Training Instructor National Learning Network, Tallaght.

Jonathan Monk discusses his artistic practice within the context of the current presentation of his work in the IMMA project space. Incorporating movement, elements of performance as well as photographic imagery and everyday objects, these works explore the nature of time.

The “Havana International Language Exchange” is taking place every Wed from 16:30-19:30 in Havana Tapas Bar in George’s Street. There are many Spanish speakers and English-speakers are explicitly invited, but everyone else is certainly very welcome too, to meet for a chat to improve your Spanish or English.

In the RDS Library Speaker Series Dan Cruickshank will talk about “The Inspiration and Influence of Irish Architecture in the 18th & 19th Centuries”.

He will highlight the influences and inspiration that came directly from the continent. He will also show the influence Irish architecture had in distant lands. He will refer in detail to Limerick and New Town Pery – a creation based on a master plan by ‘Sardinian’ Davis Ducart. He will argue how it influenced early 19th century development in New York.

On Wednesday the Centre for Creative Practices will be holding the first of their Artistic Entrepreneurs Creative Networking Nights. During the evening there will be a pitching round where anyone who would like to pitch their project or idea or a problem they have can do so. The session will be moderated by Chris Gordon of the Irish Social Entrepreneurs Network and if you would like to pitch your project or idea or problem then let Ian AT Cfcp.ie know.

The Stinging Fly will launch the “Davy Byrnes Stories 2014” on Wednesday. Admission seems to be free.

The King Kong Club is a weekly music game-show in the Mercantile. Each week 6-7 bands/solo artists play three songs each. At the end of all the performances a clap-off with the King Kong Club Clap-o-Meter takes place and the winner goes through to a semi-final and it all culminates after six months of competition with The Grand Final, held in front of a panel of celebrity judges.

“The Song Room” is another open mic event. It takes place in The Globe in George’s Street at 20:30 every Wednesday.

“The Zodiac Sessions” is a regular open mic event from 20:30 in Bruxelles (between Grafton Street and Westbury Hotel) for unsigned musicians. Admission is free and there is a different line-up every week.

Bad Boy Jake are every Wednesday in the Gypsy Rose Rock & Blues Bar playing their rock, blues and American.

Every Wednesday a Singer Songwriter Night will take place in Mother Reilly’s in Rathmines. This is YOUR chance to show everyone what you can do, alternatively you can just listen to the talented Singer/Songwriters. Admission is free.

Traditional Irish Music Session in Hedigan’s (The Brian Boru) in Phibsborough from 21:30 every Wednesday. If you play an instrument you are especially welcome (all levels are welcome).

The yearly Library Book Sale in the RDS will take place from Mon 29 Sept – Fri 03 Oct. The books are duplicate and (mainly) out of date books. Everybody is welcome to search through the hundreds of books and buy the ones you like for very low prices.

The Green Door Market is a new indoor food/Farmer’s Market that takes place just a few doors down from the Dublin Food Co-op at Newmarket in Dublin 8. Admission is free.

The Dublin History Festival from 26 Sept – 08 Oct will offer you lots of talks about historical topics. There will be talks every day of the week. Most of them take place in various library in Dublin, but some are in City Hall. The full programme can be downloaded here and the events during the week are on pages 12-15 of the festival brochure. Every first Thursday of the month, a free tour of Grangegorman Military Cemetery on Blackhorse Avenue takes place. Meet inside the Cemetery Gates. Admission is free and everybody is welcome.

The Ferocious Mingle Marcade (Market and Arcade) is back in a new location. The Marcade is now in Camden Street next to Daintree Paper and opposite the Centra and off-license there. It takes place every Thurs-Sun and is a flea-market-type permanent market with stalls and “chalets” for traders.

The National Gallery has an extensive programme of free talks, public tours and Art Documentary screenings focusing on highlights of the European and Irish Collection every day of the week. Check their website for details.

The hugely popular Oktoberfest in Dublin takes place from 18 Sept – 05 Oct again. It is a German Beer Festival with Erdinger Weissbräu Beer (including alcohol-free wheat beer), lots of German Bavarian Food and authentic Bavarian music.

Opening hours are Mon-Thurs 12:00-23:30, Fri+Sat: 12:00-00:30, Sun 12:00-22:30.

The best place to experience the festival is in the Festival Tent on the platform in George’s Dock. But because the yearly festival is soo popular, there are at times long queues because of the severe admission restrictions (quantity of people). Last year the queues already started at 17:30. Luckily around George’s Dock are more food and drink stalls so that you don’t HAVE to be in the Festival tent to enjoy the event. Pre-booking is possible, but check the cost.

Admission is free, but after 22:00 a wristband system kicks in whereby you have to buy a wristband for EUR 6 that gives you a EUR 5 food voucher (and 1 Euro goes to charity).

‘Censored’ is a series of eight free evening lectures, running on the first Thursday of each month, from September 2014 to August 2015.

“The advent of printing in fifteenth-century Europe meant that texts, ideas, and opinions could be reproduced and diffused on an unprecedented scale. In response, most European countries established new institutions, laws and other mechanisms to censor the press. Ireland was no exception. This series will look at the ways in which the press was censored in Ireland from the arrival of printing in 1551 to the late twentieth century. Speakers will discuss literary, political and religious works that have been censored; consider the ways in which printers, booksellers and authors were reprimanded for publishing controversial texts and reflect on the various ways in which press regulation has changed over time.”

The next lecture is on Thursday and is entitled “‘Regulating the printed word and the tongue’: censorship in seventeenth century Ireland” with Dr Eamon Darcy (NUIM).

The next lectures will take place on 06 Nov and 04 Dec.

The first “Dun Laoghaire Music Weekend” will take place from Fri 03 – Sun 05 Oct. 30 bands will perform in 13 venues and only two of the 13 will charge an admission fee.

The venues are Buck Henry’s, Dunphy’s, Farrell’s, Gilbert & Wright, Gourmet Food Parlour, McKenna’s, McLoughlin’s, Real Gourmet Burger, Royal Marine Hotel, Sunshine Cafe, T O’Loughlin’s and the two non-free venues The Purty Kitchen and Whiskey Fair.

Cornucopia Café & Restaurant host live music three evenings a week (Thurs, Fri and Sat). The restaurant is a Wholefood & Vegetarian Restaurant and is open until 22:15.

The Dublin Sidewalk Astronomers meet at the Martello Tower car park in Sandymount for a public star-gazing and invite everybody to come along. Members bring along their telescopes and share the wonders of the night-sky with you. Admission is free.

“Electric Fridays with DUB” is a weekly gig/open mic night in the basement of The International Bar. Admission is free.
