Hi all!

It is a busy event week and it took me ages to search for all the events. There are soo many badly promoted AND badly described events, but I think I got most. I am running very late again, though. So I won’t spend too much time here and I already had to cut the This is Odd section this week. Running out of time on all ends! ;-)

[ad]

If you LIKE the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page, you possibly saw the issue I was struggling with there this week and maybe you were part of the big help to keep the Page going. If you have no clue what I am talking about, have a look at the message on the Facebook Page from Thursday (04 Sept) and you will get the full picture. If you are on Facebook, but haven’t joined our Dublin Event Guide community, come over and join in! Oh and also follow me on Twitter if you can: www.twitter.com/DublinEventG

Your support and help is needed and MUCH appreciated and here are my weekly appeals:

The sending of the weekly e-mail newsletter costs EUR 170 per month and for this I need your help. If four wonderful people can be found per week, then we usually make it exactly to that amount. You can help here: www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm I am also looking for some corporate sponsors. Maybe two or three companies that are prepared to help with a little more than the individual donations of around 12 Euro. If you know anybody, send them my way. :-) Recently the donations dropped significantly. Maybe it is the bad times, but EUR 12 is just 2 pints and for the equivalent of 2 pints you get 52 issues full of information about free cultural events. That’s DEFINITELY worth 2 pints! Please…and Thanks! :-)

And finally – I can’t say it often enough: Please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 22,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 48,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

The Birdcage Bakery & Cafe bake over fifty different types of little cakes and chocolates, croissants and scones and they also have sandwiches, soups, salads, tarts and calzoni. (Open: Mon-Fri from 07:30- 15:30). The Birdcage Bakery & Cafe in 21 Harcourt Road in Dublin 2 is supporting the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and if you could have your Breakfast or Lunch there and thank them for their support, everyone benefits! ;-)

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

This week the Feel Good Slot is a true Feel GOOD video clip. I came across it on Facebook and you might have seen it already, but watch it again, because for most of us it works EVERY time! :-)

The video clip is here www.youtube.com/watch?v=RP4abiHdQpc It is nothing else but a laughing baby, but most of us HAVE to smile when we see and hear it. The baby LOVES it when the dad rips up paper.

Have a good and smiley weekend and week!

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

Last week Timothy McA, Gabriel K, Aoife M supported the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. I really really really appreciate the help! Thanks! Without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to here and give something back!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This week, the Fringe Festival is the main event, but there is only one free event, so check it out. It is on Saturday evening at the Samuel Beckett Bridge. It is a musical performance called “Harp”. If you are into fashion, the Dublin Fashion Festival is running this weekend as well.

A Job Expo and Which Course Expo is in Croke Park and Indonesian Music Concerts are on Saturday and Sunday entertaining you in the National Concert Hall (Gamelan Concerts).

If you want to keep your kids busy and interested, bring them to the National Emergency Services Day in the Royal Hospital Kilmainham or to the Wolly Wards Animal Farm in Marlay Park.

The Smithfield Horse Fair takes place on Sunday, only the second and the last time this year.

There is lots more, but ther rest is for you to explore! ;-)

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:

Pigsback | O2 | Vodafone | Pixmania
Expedia
| Lastminute.com | Hotels.com

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Free Self-Defence Videos for Women

Krav Maga Ireland is the main sponsor of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and in addition to that, I am one of the instructors at Krav Maga Ireland.

Krav Maga Ireland is the largest Self-Defence training centre in Ireland. We train more than 1000 people every year and run 12-week and 2-day courses for beginners. The courses are designed to teach everyday normal people how to protect themselves.

A little while ago, we filmed a few video clips together with her.ie that were specifically made to give women a bit of insight into some basic self protection concepts. These videos are now available for free (I played the role of the “baddie” in them.) and you can find them via this page: www.kravmagaireland.ie/fcat/

Be an audience Member at a TV3 show!

TV3 are still looking for audience members for their new show “The Lie”, hosted by Jonathan McCrea. There will be a complimentary pre-show reception and an opportunity to see the studio and be involved in the making of a TV Show. If you or your family/friends are interested and would like to be part of the TV3 audience, Simply register at www.tv3.ie/takepart or e-mail audience@tv3.ie for further details.

Available dates for The Lie are from 08-25 September (some days at 18:30, on other days at 13:30).

“The O2” is now the “3Arena”

You might have seen it already, but if you didn’t, check this out so that you won’t get confused:

Since the mobile phone company “3” completed the take over of O2 in Ireland now, the Point Depot’s branding “The O2” had to be changed as well and 3 chose to call it “3Arena”. The change is taking effect immediately, so most web sites that link to the venue have already changed the name.

Originally, the building was a railway goods handling depot and was called “Point Depot”, even when it became a entertainment venue later. After a bit renovation the naming rights were sold to O2, but maybe we should just stick to the original name.

Opportunities

This section is intended to feature new startup companies and projects. Opportunities that people saw and that they chose not to ignore. I am, however, experiencing a little technical problem with this section, so for now I won’t be able to use it. I will keep you posted.

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Sculpture in Context

Just bring a mat or a towel, some water and (hopefully) even some sun protection to the class. Should the weather be bad, the bandstand will be shelter or even training location. The training is suitable for all levels, so even total beginners are very welcome.

On Sunday at 15:00, a film screening and introduction by the film makers Eileen Walsh & David Dryden will be presented.

The film makers describe:
“Together in Pieces” is a gripping 25 minute documentary on the changing landscape of Northern Ireland. The world famous murals and political slogans that have taunted its communities for over 40 years are being slowly transformed by a graffiti revolution.
From the intimidating sectarian graffiti that falsely represents the views of the communities they appear in, to the internationally renowned murals that depict the history of the region, the poignant question is raised: “What do we want to paint?”
We learn about Linda Watson’s long struggle to change perceptions about her community both from within and without. Bill Rolston, Emeritus Professor at the University of Ulster and world expert on the sectarian murals in Belfast, talks about the changing landscape in Northern Ireland.

Smithfield Horse Fair

08:00 – 12:00, Sun 07 Sep

Smithfield Plaza, Dublin 7

For generations, the Smithfield Horse Fair was a monthly event. But concerns over animal safety, tax avoidance and Dublin City’s general discomfort and concerns about the event itself and the audience it attracted meant that Dublin City tried to end the Horse Fair. However the laws allowing it are above the powers of Dublin City! So instead of forbidding it, it was reduced to two markets per year (March + September).

The second market this year and – as far as I remember – the second market under this new regime is taking place on Sunday. It will be heavily supervised by Gardai, Dublin City and Animal Welfare organisations and it remains to be seen if it still attracts plenty of horse sellers and buyers.

In happier times this was a very unique and interesting event, but I wouldn’t dare a “forecast” for this weekend’s event. It could be extra big because it is only twice a year or it could be very small.

Many thought that it was a good decision to limit the markets to two and were hoping that this would be helpful for the horse’s welfare as well, others, however, are more in favour of an open market that can be supervised instead of pushing the – undoubtedly continuing – selling and buying of horses into the grey and unsupervised area.

Together in Pieces

White Lady Art, 14 Wellington Quay, Dublin 2

On Saturday at 18:00, a film screening and panel discussion with the film makers Eileen Walsh & David Dryden, artist VERZ who is a street artist and muralist in Belfast, and Irish Times journalist and broadcaster Una Mullally will take place.

Supermoon over Dublin

23:55, Sun 07 Sep

Dublin (various locations)

This weekend, the last Supermoon will be visible (if we have a cloudless sky). A supermoon is a Full Moon that occurs when the Moon is closest to Earth.

On Sunday night the closest position will be at 00:27 (Monday morning), when the distance between Moon and Earth is a mere 355,392km. There were two other supermoons this year (13 July + 11 Aug) and this is the last one for 2014.

But the good news is that you don’t have to wait until 00:27 on Monday morning, the brighter than usual moon will be over us and is visible (if there are no clouds) from Saturday until Tuesday.

If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
