Hi all!

This weekend is extremely busy with lots of top events. The Dublin Maker Festival, the City Soul Picnic, the Festival of Curiosity, the Bray Summerfest and lots of Country/Bluegrass/Americana/Roots gigs for the disappointed Garth Brooks fans in Dublin really make this weekend one of the busiest.

[ad]

Each of these events could keep us happy for a whole weekend, but this Sat and Sun we have FIVE big events at the same time. Wow! The choice is difficult, but there should something for everyone. On the flip side, it means though, that the next week will be significantly quieter.

The August bank Holiday weekend next weekend is traditionally a relatively quiet weekend because organisers assume that many are away on holidays, but it looks as maybe the next 2 or three weekends are a little quieter. Soooooo: Make the most of this weekend. Super weather and super events. Don’t waste your time with stuff that can wait! :-)

Last week I asked you for help here and I will keep that question for another week. I got some helpful feedback and I still have to reply to the people that got back to me, but maybe there are more Dublin Event Guide readers that would be happy to help? You, maybe?

Here is my question: It is a very serious question and I really need some feedback from you (to dublineventguide@gmail.com please): What can I do to increase the value the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) brings you? What other services or additional features would make this weekly e-mail magazine more valuable to you?

The background to this question is a financial one: The suggested donation of EUR 1 per month from lots of subscribers would make a huge difference to the Dublin Event Guide and would give me the opportunity to put more time and more resources in it, but only a tiny minority of subscribers seems to feel that they get a value of EUR 1 per month. So what could I do to get more people to get value?

Please send me an e-mail with your opinions: dublineventguide@gmail.com

And here are the weekly appeals:

The sending of the weekly e-mail newsletter costs EUR 170 per month and for this I need your help. If four wonderful people can be found per week, then we usually make it exactly to that amount. You can help here: www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm I am also looking for some corporate sponsors. Maybe two or three companies that are prepared to help with a little more than the individual donations of around 12 Euro. If you know anybody, send them my way. :-) Recently the donations dropped significantly. Maybe it is the bad times, but EUR 12 is just 2 pints and for the equivalent of 2 pints you get 52 issues full of information about free cultural events. That’s DEFINITELY worth 2 pints! Please…and Thanks! :-)

And finally – I can’t say it often enough: Please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 21,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 47,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

Today’s Feel Good Slot quote is very simple and the first part (after the “:”) we might often “secretly” admit, but the second part (after the “…”) is a really important realisation:

My entire life can be described in one sentence: It didn’t go as planed … and that’s ok!

My life definitely went differently than I or my parents had planned and not all changes of the plan were immediately good changes, but in the end it turned out better than I could have planned it. How about yours?

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

Last week Irene C, Erzsebet H, George K, Bernadette B and Nicola S were so wonderful to support the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. And I really appreciate the help! Thanks! Without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This weekend you will find me at the Dublin Maker Festival on Saturday and at the City Soul Picnic. If I could also be at some of the events of the Festival of Curiosity and the Bray Summerfest, I would do that. But I will stick to the City Soul Picnic as my main event for the weekend. And therefore you will find me there on Sunday as well.

If you have children to entertain, definitely check out the many Festival of Curiosity events, it is a great festival.

There are also lots of Country/Bluegrass/Americana/Roots gigs in town to make up for the cancelled Garth Brooks concerts for the people that came to Dublin despite the cancellations. Even if Country music is normally not your thing, give Americana and Roots a go, it is quite different from the traditional Country & Western music.

Whatever you do, make the best of the weekend, because we have reached the event peak and it will be quieter from now on.

Ghosts in Our Machine – Vegan Ireland Film Screening – Ticket Competition

Sat 26 July – 18:30
Ireland Institute, 27 Pearse Street, Dublin 2

Join director Liz Marshall and Vegan Ireland for the Irish Premiere of her award winning movie “The Ghosts in Our Machine”. Liz Marshall will talk and hold a Q&A session. Samples of vegan foods will be available. (This movie is not gory.)

The Ghosts in Our Machine is a documentary that illuminates the lives of individual animals living within and rescued from the machine of our modern world. Through the heart and photographic lens of photographer Jo-Anne McArthur, you will become familiar with a cast of non-human animals. The film follows Jo-Anne over the course of a year as she photographs several animal stories in parts of Canada, the U.S. and in Europe. Each story is a window into global animal industries: Food, Fashion, Entertainment and Research.

Tickets for the screening are available for EUR 8 at the door or you can book through Paypal to vegansireland@gmail.com or email the same address for bank details.

For one reader of the Dublin Event Guide, Vegan Ireland has a pair of tickets as a competition prize and that lucky winner is Danielle Smart. Congrats!

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:

Pigsback | O2 | Vodafone | Pixmania
Expedia
| Lastminute.com | Hotels.com

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Sand Sculpture Exhibition – Dublin Castle

The display of massive Sand Sculptures in the Upper Courtyard is back for the 15th year. This year the theme is “Black, White & Grey” and you wonder how that theme can be realised with all-brown Sand Sculptures.

The live carving takes place every day from 22 July – 29 July (from 10:00-17:00) and the finished sculptures will then be on display until 21 August.

Supported by the OPW, the Sand Sculptures are created by Duthain Dealbh (meaning: Fleeting Sculpture) (www.duthain-dealbh.com/) and only compacted sand is used with no other added ingredients.

I am fascinated by the Sculptures year after year and strongly recommend a visit! Admission is free.

Graffiti Problem in Dublin

Let me tell you fist of all, that I love good graffiti (a.k.a. Street Art)! There are amazing pieces of work in Dublin: Near Windmill Lane, at the back of the Bernard Shaw Pub, near former Mabos at the Grand Canal Dock, in the car park of the Tivoli Theatre and in a few other areas. Some are soo artistic, that they just have to stay, but that unfortunately defeats the purpose a little, because Street Art is temporary and spaces that can be used for Street Art are scarce so ideally more spaces would be made available.

What most of us dislike, though is the brain and creativity-void tagging that we see everywhere or – even worse – the Graffiti Vandalism. A great piece of street art on the Luas track between Jervis Street and Four Courts was vandalised then repaired and just one day later was damaged again: www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10152523141255851 And Molly Malone was put back on her new place after having been restored and cleaned and some sad taggers had to damage the statue: www.breakingnews.ie/discover/graffiti-vandals-target-molly-malone-statue-in-dublin-637183.html

The Dublin City Business Improvement District (BIPD) organisation says that they spend EUR 125,000 every year to clean Graffiti. What a waste of money. Tagging is sooooo uncool!

Dublin City Libraries Summer Children’s Programme

During July and August the Summer Programme will take place again in Dublin’s Libraries for children. There will be Theatre and Yoga, puppet shows, art, drama, music, storytelling, Viking workshops and more and all for children and families. All events are free. Booking is recommendd, though. Find a description of some of the vents with links here www.dublincity.ie/main-menu-services-recreation-culture-dublin-city-public-libraries-and-archive-events/summer-2014 and at the bottom of that page you can also see a link to download the PDF brochure.

Opportunities

This section is intended to feature new startup companies and projects. Opportunities that people saw and that they chose not to ignore. I am, however, experiencing a little technical problem with this section, so for now I won’t be able to use it. I will keep you posted.

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Ulysses Cylinders by Dale Chihuly and Seaver Leslie

19 June – 23 August

Coach House, Dublin Castle Gardens, Dame Street, Dublin 2

Ulysses Cylinders by Dale Chihuly and Seaver Leslie with Flora C. Mace and Joey Kirkpatrick

Dale Chihuly’s vibrant coloured glass installations and opulent Chandeliers hang in many of the world’s most prestigious museums and public spaces including the Victoria and Albert museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Louvre in Paris.

A world premier of “Ulysses Cylinders” inspired by James Joyces’s Ulysses will come to the Coach House of Dublin Castle. This collaborative exhibition combines the alchemic artistry of Dale Chihuly with painter Seaver Leslie’s pen and ink drawings to create a unique collection of golden glass Cylinders.

Working with Leslie’s drawings on paper, artists Mace and Kirkpatrick constructed fragile glass drawings, which Chihuly’s team studio amalgamated into individual Cylinders of glass wrapped in gold leaf. Each drawing offers a visual trigger into selected narratives of Ulysses as recounted by Joyce.

Admission is free. www.dublincastle.ie/NewsEvents/Title,31395,en.htm

Chihuly will also exhibit his signature work at Solomon Fine Art (Balfe Street, Dublin 2) from 19 June – 31 July. Admission is free.

Chester Beatty’s A-Z: from Amulet to Zodiac

11 July – 01 Feb 2015

Chester Beatty Library, Garden of Dublin Castle, Dame Street, Dublin 2

One A is for Amulet, B is for Beatty, C is for Calligraphy…. Chester Beatty’s A to Z will take you on a journey through a selection of highlights, showcasing the breadth and quality of this collection.

This curators’ choice show is a visual treat with universal appeal. Each letter of the alphabet is matched to a word that is representative of something characteristically associated with the collection. Featuring many works seldom or never before seen in public, the exhibition will explore the threads that link cultures across the Western, Islamic and East Asian worlds.

Opening hours: From 10:00-17:00 on Mon to Fri (closed Mondays from 1 Oct), 11:00-17:00 on Sat, 13:00-17:00 on Sun

Vanished Portraits – A documentation by Karol Jozw

17-31 July

Centre for Creative Practices (CFCP), 15 Pembroke Street, Dublin 2

An exhibition of photography taken by Jozwiak while travelling through Bulgaria alone. Feeling lonely and weary of travel he put together this collection of melancholic photographs. What attracted the author’s attention there was an untypical form of commemoration of the dead in which photography happened to play a crucial role. An in-depth research and documentation of this phenomenon led to the uncovering of some intriguing anthropological and cultural traces.

The exhibition opening is on Thurs 17 July from 18:00-22:00. Admission is free.

“A Place to Call Home” presented by Art Therapy Hub

20 July – 05 August

Third Space Cafe, 14 Smithfield Market, Dublin 7

Art Therapy Hub presents ‘A Place to Call Home’, an exhibition of photographs taken by Urban Teenage Refugees living in Nepal. Art Therapy Hub linked up with UK based organisation Art Refuge in Kathmandu, Nepal. There, they provided group art therapy projects to vulnerable people including teenage urban refugees. This exhibition is the result of an art therapy project in which seven teenage urban refugees participated. The focus of the project was to build resilience to deal with the challenges faced by these refugees. The project also set out to encourage the group to connect with their new environment and community through photography. All photographs have been taken by the teenagers, some of whom had never taken a photo before. They were all given 35mm disposable cameras to take snapshots of the local community and the place they now call ‘home’.

Dublin Maker is a one-day, hands-on, family-friendly, free, outdoor celebration of making in tents on the Physics Lawn of Trinity College Dublin.

Inventors and makers have an opportunity to showcase their creations and it’s a place where people show what they are making, and share what they are learning. Makers range from tech enthusiasts to crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, artists, science clubs, students, authors, and commercial exhibitors. They are of all ages and backgrounds.

Dublin Maker took place last year for the first time and it was a great event. You don’t really know what you will discover there, but if you are a curious, interested and maybe even semi-geeky person, don’t miss this event. I will be there!

City Soul Picnic

12:00 – 18:00, Sat 26 Jul

Merrion Square, Dublin 2

The Dublin City Soul Festival went through many transformations in its 8 year history. In the first two years there were outstanding international Soul Bands, like the amazing Rance Allen Group, part of a top notch line-up. For a few years it was a week long festival with Food Trail and Pub Gigs that culminated in a 1-day Soul Picnic, then the Rising Stars competition for new bands was added, then it went to two days of Soul Picnic and this year all is changing again:

The Dublin City Soul Festival as an independent event is seemingly gone, but luckily the Soul Picnic (as a 2-day event) is staying at least for another year and has moved under the umbrella of the City Spectacular. It is now called “City Soul Picnic”. The bands are all Irish based and are (for a number of years) not only Soul anymore but that is not a bad thing, as they are still some of the best Irish bands. And the date has moved from end of May to now end of July.

So what is staying? A great 2-day summer festival with some of the best music Dublin can offer. – I have been at the Soul Picnic for the last 7 years and I will be there again this year. Admission is free, but a donation of EUR 5 for the Musical Youth Foundation is suggested for adult visitors.

The line-up this year will be:

Saturday 26 July:
Maynooth Gospel Choir
Moo!
The Blood Red Mountain Band
Johnny Rayge
Fox.E & The Good Hands
ZASKA
Miles Graham
Don Baker

—————

Sunday 27 July:
Dublin Gospel Choir
The Sacreblues Band
Mongoose
Richard Farrell and the Last Tribe
Age
The Barley Mob
Big September
Soul Power v’s “The Goods” Band

The flea market takes place every last Sunday of the month and admission is free. For more information or if you want to sell your own stuff, check out www.dublinflea.ie

City Soul Picnic

12:00 – 18:00, Sun 27 Jul

Sunday 27 July:
Dublin Gospel Choir
The Sacreblues Band
Mongoose
Richard Farrell and the Last Tribe
Age
The Barley Mob
Big September
Soul Power vs “The Goods” Band

Temple Bar Night Market

18:00 – 22:00, Thu 31 Jul

Temple Bar, Dublin 2

After a successful first year, the Temple Bar Night Market is back this year and thist time there will not just be a few sporadic events, but it will take place every Thursday from 05 June until 28 August.

It is an Arts & Craft Market (and not more – see below!) that will will feature the work of artists & craft makers and street entertainment from music to painting & from dance to workshops.

Last year many people criticised that they missed food stalls at the market and I expect that this won’t change: The market is organised by the Temple Bar Company, an association of the traders in Temple Bar, so it is not in their interest to have competing traders at this market. If you know what to expect, you will hopefully not be disappointed.

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)

Israel vs. Palestine – This is a lot worse than “odd”!

To call the situation “odd” would be an insult to everybody affected, but I feel I can’t just ignore what is going on in Gaza and in Israel and the “This is Odd!” section is the space for my personal observations about the world around us.

The situation is anything but clear cut. The Palestinian rocket attacks on Israel are not condonable in the slightest, but Israel’s response is not an iota more condonable either.

I am shocked by Israel’s acts of terror and I urge everybody to inform yourself and to form your own opinion about this conflict. If you don’t really know what the background is, have a look at this relatively short video clip that explains a lot: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y58njT2oXfE

As you can see from this information, the conflict is going on for a long long time, but throughout the history Israel has been an aggressive bully that has actually CREATED Hamas by how they treated the Palestinians. Is it a surprise that Hamas easily found people that were prepared to give their lives to fight the oppressor? I don’t think so! Does this give Hamas the right to kill Israelis? Not at all, BUT oppressed people will do ANYTHING.

The statistics show the imbalance in this conflict: Around 35 Israelis were killed and approx. 750 Palestinians. Nearly all Israelis that died are soldiers, virtually all Palestinians are civilians. In my opinion every single dead person is one too many, but Israel has a highly sophisticated army that is extremely well equipped. The Palestinians are badly equipped and badly trained.

There is NO right in this conflict, only wrong, but Israel’s oppression and occupation created and triggered the Palestinian response and that is why so many people clearly give full blame and responsibility to Israel.

An immediate cease fire with following peace talks has to happen and Israel has to give the Palestinians adequate space to live and stop taking more and more land. There can’t be any other option and we must make it clear to Israel that bullying is not ok!

And if you just can’t imagine that there might be something going on that is not ok, watch this video clip: www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=886405354706275 Yes, a warning was given, but imagine what your chances would be if you had 57 seconds to leave the house now before it will be destroyed. Shocking!

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
