Hi all!
The main event this weekend is the City Spectacular, don’t miss out and make sure you go to Merrion Square! Ohh and bring a few friends. Surprisingly not everyone has heard yet about this event.(The previous name was Street Performance World Championship).
[ad]
Hey, it has been a while since I formally welcomed people here to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). WELCOME, it’s great that you joined the Dublin Event Guide Community! :-) Every week a minimum of 70 people join our big family. We are more than 21,000 people here and it all started with a mail to 10 friends approx. 7 years ago.
I know that this weekly e-mail magazine is REALLY long! (I know because I write it! ;-) ) Sometimes people are overwhelmed by so much information. For that reason I Mention this every now and then: DON’T try to read everything! Read the Dublin Event Guide like you would read a newspaper. You read the headline in a newspaper and then read further if you are interested in the headline. It’s not much different here: Read the headlines for the days you are available and only read the full information if the headline caught your attention!
All clear? ;-) Enjoy this edition!
And I need your help again this week:
The sending of the weekly e-mail newsletter costs EUR 170 per month and for this I need your help. If four wonderful people can be found per week, then we usually make it exactly to that amount. You can help here: www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm I am also looking for some corporate sponsors. Maybe two or three companies that are prepared to help with a little more than the individual donations of around 12 Euro. If you know anybody, send them my way. :-) Recently the donations dropped significantly. Maybe it is the bad times, but EUR 12 is just 2 pints and for the equivalent of 2 pints you get 52 issues full of information about free cultural events. That’s DEFINITELY worth 2 pints! Please…and Thanks! :-)
And finally – I can’t say it often enough: Please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 21,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 47,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
Today’s Feel Good Slot is the video of an AMAZINGLY talented 8 year old Japanese girl, who plays guitar. If you watch the video, be warned, it gets a litttle loud and contains music that might not be your thing. Just turn the volume down a bit and be blown away by her guitar playing www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YXpfcZy2Sk Why is that video in the Feel Good Slot? Because seeing a video like that shows us what human beings can achieve. You can achieve more as well IF you want, I am convinced!

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
Last week Frank W, Ciara B, Isidro G, Rita B, Johan S and Clodagh O’C were the wonderful people who supported the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. And I sooo appreciate their help! Thanks! Without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This weekend the picking is easy: I will be at the Street Performance World Championship (or City Spectacular) for the whole day on Saturday and the whole day on Sunday. And then on Sunday evening the World Cup final is on my list.
With that, I am not a great help, I know. ;-) But let me suggest a few other things: Bray Summerfest, World War 1 Roadshow on Saturday, Trade School on Saturday, the Fusion Sunday World Culture Market are other worthwhile events.

Ghosts in Our Machine – Vegan Ireland Film Screening – Ticket Competition
Sat 26 July – 18:30
Ireland Institute, 27 Pearse Street, Dublin 2
Join director Liz Marshall and Vegan Ireland for the Irish Premiere of her award winning movie “The Ghosts in Our Machine”. Liz Marshall will talk and hold a Q&A session. Samples of vegan foods will be available. (This movie is not gory.)
The Ghosts in Our Machine is a documentary that illuminates the lives of individual animals living within and rescued from the machine of our modern world. Through the heart and photographic lens of photographer Jo-Anne McArthur, you will become familiar with a cast of non-human animals. The film follows Jo-Anne over the course of a year as she photographs several animal stories in parts of Canada, the U.S. and in Europe. Each story is a window into global animal industries: Food, Fashion, Entertainment and Research.
Tickets for the screening are available for EUR 8 at the door or you can book through Paypal to vegansireland@gmail.com or email the same address for bank details.
For one reader of the Dublin Event Guide, Vegan Ireland has a pair of tickets as a competition prize. If you want to win that pair, you have to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail and with MARSHALL in the subject line. Your mail has to be with me by 12:00 on Tues 22 July.

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository
Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon
LivingSocial
When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:
Pigsback | O2 | Vodafone | Pixmania
Expedia | Lastminute.com | Hotels.com
(You can also copy these links and send them to your friends.)
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

This section is intended to feature new startup companies and projects. Opportunities that people saw and that they chose not to ignore. I am, however, experiencing a little technical problem with this section, so for now I won’t be able to use it. I will keep you posted.
|
Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Ulysses Cylinders by Dale Chihuly and Seaver Leslie
19 June – 23 August
Coach House, Dublin Castle Gardens, Dame Street, Dublin 2
Ulysses Cylinders by Dale Chihuly and Seaver Leslie with Flora C. Mace and Joey Kirkpatrick
Dale Chihuly’s vibrant coloured glass installations and opulent Chandeliers hang in many of the world’s most prestigious museums and public spaces including the Victoria and Albert museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Louvre in Paris.
A world premier of “Ulysses Cylinders” inspired by James Joyces’s Ulysses will come to the Coach House of Dublin Castle. This collaborative exhibition combines the alchemic artistry of Dale Chihuly with painter Seaver Leslie’s pen and ink drawings to create a unique collection of golden glass Cylinders.
Working with Leslie’s drawings on paper, artists Mace and Kirkpatrick constructed fragile glass drawings, which Chihuly’s team studio amalgamated into individual Cylinders of glass wrapped in gold leaf. Each drawing offers a visual trigger into selected narratives of Ulysses as recounted by Joyce.
Admission is free. www.dublincastle.ie/NewsEvents/Title,31395,en.htm
Chihuly will also exhibit his signature work at Solomon Fine Art (Balfe Street, Dublin 2) from 19 June – 31 July. Admission is free.

Vanished Portraits – A documentation by Karol Jozw
17-31 July
Centre for Creative Practices (CFCP), 15 Pembroke Street, Dublin 2
An exhibition of photography taken by Jozwiak while travelling through Bulgaria alone. Feeling lonely and weary of travel he put together this collection of melancholic photographs. What attracted the author’s attention there was an untypical form of commemoration of the dead in which photography happened to play a crucial role. An in-depth research and documentation of this phenomenon led to the uncovering of some intriguing anthropological and cultural traces.
The exhibition opening is on Thurs 17 July from 18:00-22:00. Admission is free.

What is TTIP? And why is it of concern?
11:00 – 13:00, Sat 12 Jul
The Greenhouse, 17 St Andrew Street, Dublin 2
“The Transatlantic Trade & Investment Partnership (TTIP) is a trade treaty currently under negotiation between the EU and the USA. With tariffs between the USA and the EU already very low, a primary focus of these negotiations is on curbing regulations and standards on a range of areas including environmental protection, energy, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and toxic chemicals management, financial services and banking, food and consumer product safety. Of particular concern is the place to be given to international Investor-State Dispute Settlement, “ISDS”, mechanisms which allow investors to bypass national courts and challenge governments for introducing regulations that in business’ view harms their business interests or imposes extra costs due to increased regulation.
Of greatest concern, is the secrecy and urgency associated with the negotiations, excluding democratic scrutiny. Effectively, a select political elite are seeking not only to decide the future course of public, environmental and economic policies within Europe and the USA, and to set the standards for the largest trade relationship in the world that will set the standard for global trade systems.”
On SAturday a civil society consultation on the TTIP will take place, which will be an opportunity for civil society groups to come together and learn and share about the TTIP and what impacts it will bring in Ireland and internationally.
A morning’s information / briefing will run from 11:00-13:00 and will be followed by a public street theatre event to highlight key aspects of the TTIP.
Admission is free and if you want to get in, make sure you come early.

Yoga in Phoenix Park
11:00 – 12:00, Sat 12 Jul
Bandstand (behind the Tea Room, near the Zoo), Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
This is the fifth year for “Yoga in the Park”, a brilliant initiative for a very worthy cause: From May until September, Tine from www.aditiyoga.org/ and her team of teachers invite to an hour of Yoga in Phoenix Park every Saturday. No booking is required.
The class is donation based, but all proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin and the suggested donation for this very good cause is EUR 5.
Just bring a mat or a towel, some water and (hopefully) even some sun protection to the class. Should the weather be bad, the bandstand will be shelter or even training location. The training is suitable for all levels, so even total beginners are very welcome.

A History of the “Chick Flick” – Afternoon Talk
12:00, Sat 12 Jul
Irish Film Institute, 6 Eustace Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2
“Although the term ‘chick flick’ (nearly always with a pejorative connotation) is a contemporary one, it can be seen to have many historical derivations. The films called up by the term often fall into well-recognised generic categories such as the romantic comedy or the melodrama, and always operate within a broader framework of gender politics. This talk, presented by Professor Diane Negra, Head of Film Studies at UCD, will survey the wide range of films made for and marketed to women and will look at some of the ways that Hollywood has conceptualised the interests and desires of its female audience.”
Admission is free, but the event is ticketed and booking is required through the IFI Box Office.

City Spectacular – Street Performance Festival
12:00 – 19:00, Sat 12 Jul
Merrion Square, Dublin 2
The Street Performance World Championship has been for many many years the best Festival in Dublin. It’s been around for a good few years and I still find people that have never heard about it. This year the festival has been renamed to City Spectacular and other elements have been added to the Street Performances, but for me the Street Performances are the great thing.
The “add-ons” are a Live Music Stage, a food village, mini zoo, Family Area and more. You can also see Mums and Dads getting pied in the face or soaked at the ‘Kid’s Court with Ray D’Arcy’. And there will be the ‘ESB Spark Your imagination’ area with educational workshops for kids and an “Outdoor Living Room”.
The festivals runs from 11-13 July.
And now back to the Street Performances:
They are full shows with a duration of approx. 40 min. All performances are free, but the performers are not paid to be there and will therefore – as it is normal on the street – also ask at this event for your donation. So bring some suitable change or notes with you. The performances are of the best you will ever see. There is a total of 13 street performers and they will repeat their shows a number of times over the weekend. The shows start on the hour or on the half hour and a downloadable schedule is here: www.cityspectacular.com/sites/default/files/Map%20flyer_ART.pdf
On the music stage bands like Louisiana Six, Prison Love, The Young Folk, Soul Power, Booka Brass, Interskalactic and Gypsy Rebble Rabble will perform.
Laya Healthcare is the main/title sponsor of the event.
Make sure that you don’t miss this festival. All Street Performances will take place on Saturday and Sunday, the bands don’t appear on stage twice. have a look at the schedule above and ideally print it to bring with you.
Different to other years there are this year unfortunately only two pitches/stages for the Street Performers IN the park. The locations in the park are much nicer than the ones outside.
Enjoy the Laya Healthcare City Spectacular! ;-)

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 13 Jul
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.
There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Germany vs Argentina – World Cup
20:00, Sun 13 Jul
Dublin (various locations)
Being German, I have to admit that I am thrilled that the German team has made it to the final of the Football World Cup. The semi-final (Germany vs Brazil) was epic, BUT unfortunately the World Cup finals are usually not so great. There is too much at stake, so both teams will most likely be extremely careful, which doesn’t make for a good match.
Nevertheless, I hope for a good and exciting match AND I also hope that the better team will win, no matter which of the two it will be. — Admittedly, though, I do hope that the better team will be Germany. ;-)

Temple Bar Night Market
18:00 – 22:00, Thu 17 Jul
Temple Bar, Dublin 2
After a successful first year, the Temple Bar Night Market is back this year and thist time there will not just be a few sporadic events, but it will take place every Thursday from 05 June until 28 August.
It is an Arts & Craft Market (and not more – see below!) that will will feature the work of artists & craft makers and street entertainment from music to painting & from dance to workshops.
Last year many people criticised that they missed food stalls at the market and I expect that this won’t change: The market is organised by the Temple Bar Company, an association of the traders in Temple Bar, so it is not in their interest to have competing traders at this market. If you know what to expect, you will hopefully not be disappointed.

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)
Not Garth Brooks AGAIN? No not really!
Well, a little bit! ;-) It has to do with the Garth Brooks Saga but only is not about Garth Brooks:
The players in this week’s This is Odd story are the near-dictatorial City Manager who doesn’t seem to be accountable to anyone. Then there is the mayor of Dublin, who – despite the grand and delusional title of “Lord Mayor” has absolutely no power beyond switching on Christmas Trees and opening the odd shop and then there is the Taoiseach.
The mayor once was elected into the City Council, so he has a political mandate. Not as a mayor (that election/selection is a bit of a joke), but as a city council member. The City Manager has absolutely no political mandate, he just submitted his CV and was employed.
Where is the odd part of the story? Here it is:
After the City Manager made the decision of only allowing 3 concerts and when then Garth Brooks decided to cancel ALL concerts, suddenly the mayor jumped in and started flapping his arms. You would think that the Mayor just goes to the office of the City Manager, knocks at his door and says “Hey, we need to talk!”.
Not so in our screwed up system: The Prime Minister of the country had to tell these two to talk and then they didn’t just get together, but it was a matter of “my office will ring your office to arrange”. news.ie.msn.com/entertainment/now-enda-is-trying-to-get-the-garth-brooks-concerts-back
Don’t you think it is odd if the mayor can’t pop over to the City Manager to discuss important stuff with him?
You might think; Maybe the current mayor is a whimp, or maybe the current City Manager thinks he is superior to anything and anybody? I don’t know what it is, but it is clear that something is wrong!
The solution? Quite simple: Get rid of the City Manager and also get rid of the mayor. Then let everyone in Dublin vote directly for a Mayor who then will appoint his staff. Have the Taoiseach run the country and the Mayor the city.

It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
