Hi all!
A quick intro today because again I am late. :-/ The sun is shining already out there and I am still typing and the parents among you might wonder what to do with the kids and there is still no flippin’ Dublin Event Guide in the Inbox. :-)
[ad]
Last week I mentioned a few events in this Intro that will take place and one sentence was “Dublin Pride is big, but it might not be for everyone. But there is also a Summer Festival in Phoenix Park on Sunday. And the Dublin Flea Market. ….” And then I got an angry mail from one subscriber because he felt that I disapproved of Dublin Pride and expressed that with the comment “it might not be for everyone”. Hmmmm, I can certainly say that this was not the intention and I have been seen regularly at the Dublin Pride parade. I hope saying “this event might not be for everyone” doesn’t constitute as discrimination, because I say that regularly. (Just last week I said it about World Cup Games and today it applies to the Teddy Bear Picnic AND to the National Play Day, and in all honesty, to EVERY event. Imagine if all events were for everyone, we would have a crowd problem at every single event. ;-) SO if anybody felt negatively affected; It was not my intention to express judgement in ANY way.
The person who sent me the mail will unfortunately not read this anymore because he unsubscribed from the Dublin Event Guide. Pity! Luckily the remaining 21,000 people are staying! ;-)
And for this I need your help again this week:
The sending of the weekly e-mail newsletter costs EUR 170 per month and for this I need your help. If four wonderful people can be found per week, then we usually make it exactly to that amount. You can help here: www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm I am also looking for some corporate sponsors. Maybe two or three companies that are prepared to help with a little more than the individual donations of around 12 Euro. If you know anybody, send them my way. :-) Recently the donations dropped significantly. Maybe it is the bad times, but EUR 12 is just 2 pints and for the equivalent of 2 pints you get 52 issues full of information about free cultural events. That’s DEFINITELY worth 2 pints! Please…and Thanks! :-)
And finally – I can’t say it often enough: Please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 21,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 47,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
Today’s Feel Good Slot is a quote from an unknown source:
The moment you are ready to quit is usually the moment right before the miracle happens. Don’t give up!
No explanation or interpretation needed, right!? ;-)
I have been at that moment many many times in life, even with the Dublin Event Guide. And I am SURE that we all have been there.
Regarding the Dublin Event Guide, I have quite big goals, often bigger than I openly talk about: They are goals regarding the subscriber numbers and the direction and a few other aspects. And it does happen (usually after working for about 24 hours without sleep on this e-mail magazine :-) ) that I ask myself “WHY? Why am I spending all this time researching free events, writing about them, stressing about getting the mail finished as soon as possible and still being much later than planned, worrying about getting enough donations to pay the for th cost again this month, etc.
…and then something happens (it could be as small as an unexpected super positive e-mail) that makes it all worth it again!
This is only a small example and I am sure you have bigger stories to tell. You can send them to me if you feel like it: dublineventguide@gmail.com

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
Last week Caroline D, Erinna B, Vicky L and Caoimhe A were the wonderful people who supported the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. And I sooo appreciate their help! Thanks! Without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This weekend is a weekend for children: National Play Day, Teddy Bear Picnic, Museum events. For us grown ups it is a little quieter, but there is the Pure Vintage Market, there are Talks and Gigs, then there is story-telling at Milk & Cookies Stories and then on Friday the Street Performance World Championship (a.k.a. City Spectacular) will start. And on top of that, the crucial World Cup Games also have to be accommodated. ;-)
Have a great weekend!

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository
Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon
LivingSocial
When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:
Pigsback | O2 | Vodafone | Pixmania
Expedia | Lastminute.com | Hotels.com
(You can also copy these links and send them to your friends.)
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

50 free days out in Ireland – Irish Examiner
The Irish Examiner printed an article by travel writer Pól Ó Conghaile that lists “50 fantastic Irish days out that won’t cost you a cent”.
As a Dublin Event Guide subscribers, you won’t find anything new as far as Dublin is concerned, but maybe you are looking for other free activities outside of Dublin this summer. The article is here: www.irishexaminer.com/lifestyle/features/50-fantastic-irish-days-out-that-wont-cost-you-a-cent-273432.html
It is a good list, but it could have been even better, if Pol had mentioned the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). ;-)

North Quay car lane to be used for bicycles
When I write about public transport and cycling vs cars in Dublin, I feel I have to declare where I stand: I don’t own a bike, but I use Dublin Bikes. I own a car and use it for work (the day job) and to transport equipment (I regularly drag a lot of sound equipment around.) I am in favour of public transport and non-car transport, but I won’t be able to give up the car.
With this in mind it is very much with mixed emotions when I read that Dublin City is considering the use of a full car lane on the North Quays along the Liffey for a two directional cycling lane. It is great news for cyclists, but a disaster for people that need to use the car. The North Quays are already seriously congested and this will make it a lot worse.
Here is the story:

Bray Head Slide – You can still apply
A few months ago, an artist provided a big “street water slide” in Bristol for the May Bank Holiday and a few hundred people were allowed to have a go. These few hundred were selected from nearly 100,000 who had applied.
The same (or a similar) slide is now coming to Dublin: At the Bray Summer Fest, a 90m slide will go from Bray Head down to Bray and it will be in action on 12+13 July. You can still apply until this Sunday at 17:00. 700 spaces are available, so you need luck to get a space, but it is free, so you should give it a go!
Check all details here: www.braysummerfest.com/Events/bray-head-slide/ and if you want to directly cut through to the registration, then go to www.eventbrite.ie/e/bray-head-slide-registration-registration-12110814773?ref=devg

This section is intended to feature new startup companies and projects. Opportunities that people saw and that they chose not to ignore. I am, however, experiencing a little technical problem with this section, so for now I won’t be able to use it. I will keep you posted.
|
Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Ulysses Cylinders by Dale Chihuly and Seaver Leslie
19 June – 23 August
Coach House, Dublin Castle Gardens, Dame Street, Dublin 2
Ulysses Cylinders by Dale Chihuly and Seaver Leslie with Flora C. Mace and Joey Kirkpatrick
Dale Chihuly’s vibrant coloured glass installations and opulent Chandeliers hang in many of the world’s most prestigious museums and public spaces including the Victoria and Albert museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Louvre in Paris.
A world premier of ‘Ulysses Cylinders’ inspired by James Joyces’s Ulysses will come to the Coach House of Dublin Castle. This collaborative exhibition combines the alchemic artistry of Dale Chihuly with painter Seaver Leslie’s pen and ink drawings to create a unique collection of golden glass Cylinders.
Working with Leslie’s drawings on paper, artists Mace and Kirkpatrick constructed fragile glass drawings, which Chihuly’s team studio amalgamated into individual Cylinders of glass wrapped in gold leaf. Each drawing offers a visual trigger into selected narratives of Ulysses as recounted by Joyce.
Admission is free. www.dublincastle.ie/NewsEvents/Title,31395,en.htm
Chihuly will also exhibit his signature work at Solomon Fine Art (Balfe Street, Dublin 2) from 19 June – 31 July. Admission is free.

Set in an imposing redbrick warehouse beside the Samuel Beckett Bridge on Sir John Rogerson’s Quay, Rhythms of a Port brings to life personal reflections, stories and memories of dockworkers, boatmen and port managers. This former dry cargo store serves as a reminder of the working docks which were once close to the heart of the city. Yoga in Phoenix Park
11:00 – 12:00, Sat 05 Jul
Bandstand (behind the Tea Room, near the Zoo), Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
This is the fifth year for “Yoga in the Park”, a brilliant initiative for a very worthy cause: From May until September, Tine from www.aditiyoga.org/ and her team of teachers invite to an hour of Yoga in Phoenix Park every Saturday. No booking is required.
The class is donation based, but all proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin and the suggested donation for this very good cause is EUR 5.
Just bring a mat or a towel, some water and (hopefully) even some sun protection to the class. Should the weather be bad, the bandstand will be shelter or even training location. The training is suitable for all levels, so even total beginners are very welcome.

Farmleigh House, Castleknock end of Phoenix Park, Dublin 15
Every few weeks, Farmleigh House is the venue for brilliant events and at the same time sometimes a Food Market will take place.
But sometimes the Food Market is happening when there are no events and then you wonder why, because it is certainly not the most central of food markets.
But, Farmleigh House is a great venue for a day “in the garden”. They have plenty of parking on the estate and you can spend some time looking at the gardens or relaxing in the Boathouse Cafe. So if the weather is nice, enjoy the estate AND the food market.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 06 Jul
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.
There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

National Play Day
14:00 – 17:00, Sun 06 Jul
Merrion Square, Dublin 2
The Dublin edition of the National Play Day will take place in Merrion Square this Sunday. Old and new games will be provided for kids, for example skipping, marbles, penalty shoot-outs, den building, sand and water. A special surprise activity will also take place.
It is a great day for kids, but luckily kids can’t read Dublin City’s announcement, cause that takes all the fun out of the Play Day:
“The theme for this year’s event is ‘Out to Play’ which is aimed at encouraging families and communities to support children and young people to play outdoors. […] This event will inspire children to use their imagination with creative elements of play on offer such as messy play, art and dress up.”
Dublin City speak and children’s games are diametrically opposite. ;-) But you can be certain that the day will be great for the kids.

The Legendary Lee Miller – Talk
14:00, Sun 06 Jul
Hugh Lane Gallery, Parnell Square North, Dublin 1
The public lecture “The Legendary Lee Miller” is a talk by Antony Penrose. Admission is free and no booking required.
Presented in conjunction with the ongoing exhibition “Lee Miller in James Joyce’s Dublin” at the James Joyce Centre, Antony Penrose provides an overview on the incredible career of his mother, American photographer, Lee Miller.
“Miller began as a fashion model and freelance photographer for Condé Nast in the 1920’s and later collaborated as an artist and model with Man Ray in Paris. She travelled to Egypt in the 1930’s and, after returning to Europe, became one of the few female war correspondents during the Second World War. Miller’s work with Vogue Magazine, spanned from 1939-1953, and included covering the London Blitz, the battle of Saint Malo, the liberation of Paris and the concentration camps, Buchenwald and Dachau. It was after the war, while still working with Vogue in 1946 that Lee Miller created the images of Dublin that make up the exhibition in the James Joyce Centre.”

Workshops on wildlife conservation for Ages 9-12 take place in several libraries from 07-18 July with Jim MacMonagle of Dublin Zoo. Temple Bar Night Market
18:00 – 22:00, Thu 10 Jul
Temple Bar, Dublin 2
After a successful first year, the Temple Bar Night Market is back this year and thist time there will not just be a few sporadic events, but it will take place every Thursday from 05 June until 28 August.
It is an Arts & Craft Market (and not more – see below!) that will will feature the work of artists & craft makers and street entertainment from music to painting & from dance to workshops.
Last year many people criticised that they missed food stalls at the market and I expect that this won’t change: The market is organised by the Temple Bar Company, an association of the traders in Temple Bar, so it is not in their interest to have competing traders at this market. If you know what to expect, you will hopefully not be disappointed.

City Spectacular – Street Performance
12:00, Fri 11 Jul
Merrion Square, Dublin 2
The Street Performance World Championship, one of the best – if not THE best – festival in Dublin for many years and one of the reasons why the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) was born, has been changed completely. Allegedly it is still there – but seemingly not as a “World Championship” anymore – at the core of the newly named “City Spectacular”. In addition there is a music stage and some other events taking place. More about all that in the next Dublin Event Guide.
The City Spectacular will run from 11-13 July in Merrion Square and there will also be a number of events in other locations in Dublin.
Relevant for you today is this: The Street Performances are starting today in Merrion Square. When is not clear yet (I randomly chose a start time of 12:00 for now), because at the time of writing this, the schedule hadn’t been announced yet. Hopefully that schedule will be put up soon at www.cityspectacular.com/locations-schedule and you can check out the performers here www.cityspectacular.com/park/street-performers
Laya Healthcare is the main sponsor of the event.

Garth Brooks Disaster – Dublin City Council in disarray!
Originally I had planned to write this week’s “This is Odd!” about the madness of a Prime Minister of a European country opening a low-price clothes shop in a different country. I wanted to say that it is just odd that Taoiseach Enda Kenny opened a new Primark (Penney’s) in Berlin and that it doesn’t matter how big the shop or the company behind is, you wouldn’t easily get another European Prime Minister to go that low to open a cheap clothes shop.
But then the world was turned upside down for up to 160,000 people when Dublin City Council refused to grant permission for two of the planned five Garth Brooks concerts in Croke Park.
Dublin City has the to give permission and they have the right to grant or refuse permission and while I think it is cruel to leave so many people disappointed and with a significant loss of money (for flights and hotel accommodation), I can also see that the reasons for the refusal are genuine and make some sense.
But – as so often – the real issues can only be found between the lines:
So what happened really? Aiken Promotions is the organiser/promoter of the event and they have to apply to Dublin City for a license to run the event. I am not sure what the typical timescales are for that, but considering that the concert dates are 25-30 July, so less than 4 weeks away, you would think that it is high time for Dublin City to make a decision!? The application was submitted on 17 April and the decision was made on 03 July, that’s 11 long weeks! But it is also odd that tickets were sold in January and the application was only submitted in April.
But it wasn’t that the applicant was informed about the decision first, instead it was Councillor Ray McAdam who “leaked” the news on Twitter after he was told the Dublin City Manager confirmed it to him. How embarrassing! Interestingly nearly all articles in the major news outlets that quoted McAdam initially around 10:40 removed his name from their reports when they rewrote them throughout the day. They also removed the statement (but it is still available here) that a Dublin City spokesperson allegedly said that NO decision had been made yet, but that a decision would be made within the next two weeks. Ooops!
A little later the GAA confirmed that only three concerts will go ahead and the Dublin City spokesperson probably wanted to be swallowed by the ground beneath him/her.
So how come it takes 11 weeks to make a decision and then Twitter is told before the applicant? Odd!
The story continues because Garth Brooks (He originally only had planned two concerts in Dublin, then added one more and then added another two!) has announced that it is now either all five or nothing. This is strange considering that initially two was enough. It is also stupid by him that he got involved with that threat. If he cancels all five, his fans will be upset with HIM, not with Dublin City. Until that statement Dublin City (and the opposing residents around Croke Park) were in the main firing line from the Garth Brooks fans’ perspective.
I’d say this saga is just starting! Watch this space!

It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe.
