It is just a few minutes walk away from the Point Theatre/O2 (walk in the direction of the Port Tunnel).

A new market (flea/vintage/etc) with two cafés has opened in the same location in Thomas Street where the Ferocious Mingle Market was before their move to Camden Street.

The new market in 72 Thomas Street is called Stable Market and it is open from Thursday until Sunday from 10:00-18:00 every day. It seems there is neither a website nor a Facebook Page yet.

The Temple Bar Markets (Food Market on Meeting House Square, Book Market on Temple Bar Square and the Designer Mart near Cow’s Lane) are taking place every Saturday from 10:00-16:30.

The Battle for the Bay will take place this weekend (Sat + Sun) on Dollymount Strand in Clontarf.

And if you like beach, sea, fun and maybe even have an interest in Kite Surfing, Wake Boarding or SUP of just like watching them, then this is the event for you!

It is a free weekend of entertainment for the whole family. There will be kitesurfers from across the world with demonstrations on the beach, free Battle for the Bay shows, paddle boarding and kite surfing introductions for newcomers. Attendees will be encouraged to actively participate in demonstrations/workshops over the two days which will cover:

The National Gallery has an extensive programme of free talks, public tours and Art Documentary screenings focusing on highlights of the European and Irish Collection every day of the week. Check their website for details.

The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “FAT – It’s Delicious” and it will run from 16 May – 29 Jun. The exhibition is a “lab in the gallery” event, which means that it is not just an exhibition to watch, but there are some interaction and real research elements to the exhibition.

The exhibition will show you the good and and the bad sides of fat. There will be soap that has been made from human fat (gained during a liposuction), animal fat is being cured in alcohol and a delicious meal will be made from it at one of the events, the benefits of plant oils are mentioned and the risks of obesity are pointed out. In addition you can contribute to research through tests and experiments about BMI, agility, body image and blood quality.

I like lab in the gallery events because it is not “just” an exhibition but you also are invited (you don’t have to!) to contribute to research. Kids will get the exhibition, but need some help from the parents with it. You should definitely bring them! However, kids will not be able to do the research elements and might get bored, so plan your trip well.

As always I strongly recommend to have a look at the exhibition, but you only have until 29 June!

“Aibítir – The Irish Alphabet in Botanical Art” by the Irish Society of Botanical Art is an exhibition from 02-25 May. Artists have created portraits of native plants accompanied by the first letter of their Irish name. Over 70 botanical artists, each with their own distinctive style, have participated in this project. This has resulted in the creation of three eighteen-letter Irish alphabets.

Free demonstrations in Botanical Art will take place during the exhibitio on Saturdays, Sundays in May and on Bank Holiday Monday (05 May).

A free family festival to celebrate Africa Day will take place at Farmleigh House in Phoenix Park. The event will feature live music on three stages, with headliners including the internationally renowned Irish folk and world music group Kíla and Colours Afrobeat Foundation, and also Nigerian fusion band “Tig Lin”, Ugandan singer-songwriter Justine Nantale, ska/pop/punk fusion band “The Amazing Few” and Blues and R&B band “Square Pegs” The second music stage will focus on rap, hip-hop and DJs and the third stage will feature emerging artists, from dance crews and interactive performances to music ensembles and DJs.

In addition to the music there will be children’s entertainment, food, an African Bazaar, dance, drumming and sports.

Dublin Bus will provide a free shuttle-bus service from the Heuston Bridge / Parkgate Street bus stop into the Phoenix Park. There will also be very limited free car-parking available at Farmleigh.

The next Dublin Flea Market is taking place in the Food Coop, 12 Newmarket, just off Cork Street, Dublin 8 on Sun from 11:00-17:00. The flea market takes place every last Sunday of the month.

The well known Palestrina Choir sing every Sunday at the mass in St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral. They sing complete masterworks by Mozart, Haydn, Dvorak, Palestrina, de Victoria, usually accompanied by Prof. Gerard Gillen on the organ, who often also plays a solo piece.

At this family event you will be looking at life amongst the rock pools at Sandycove Beach. Bring along a bucket and spade.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Unlike the three branches of the National Museum, the National Print Museum is normally not free, but every Sunday there is a free public tour for the next few weeks. Every visit begins with a short audio-visual presentation where the audience can observe active retired printers providing practical demonstrations of machines from the Museum’s collection.

Bodies in Urban Spaces is a free series of performances in Dublin as part of the Dublin Dance Festival:

It will take place on Sat and Sun at 13:00 and 16:00 each day. The starting point is outside the LIR Theatre and from there it is a 1 hour walk along the performance route.

Brian Keary is a classically trained guitar player who also has experience of different styles / genres of music ranging from ragtime and folk to baroque and contemporary. He will perform in Sweeney’s (Ground Floor) on Sunday afternoon.

Jim Rooney’s memoir “In It For The Long Run” captures the folk music boom of the latter half of the 20th Century, its milestones, personalities and aftermath. Rooney has worked in Nashville, TN as a musician, songwriter, recording engineer, Grammy-winning record producer and partner in a successful music publishing company. He has produced records with Nanci Griffith, John Prine, Iris DeMent, Hal Ketchum, Tom Paxton, Tom Rush, and Peter Rowan.

Hear how forensic artist and sculptor Christian Corbet helped create a first in forensic reconstruction history by identifying an Irish-born Canadian soldier of the Great War using CT, laser and isotope scanning, and artistry. This special talk marks the acquisition of a sculpture by Corbet of Pte. Lawless of the 49th Battalion Canadian Expeditiary Forces, into the Museum’s collection.

In the 2nd millennium BC, Hammurabi became king of Mesopotamia (today: Iraq, Kuwait, parts of Syria, Turkey and Iran). The chronology of Mesopotamia in the 2nd Millennium still differ by more than 150 years. This has prevented us from understanding the relationship between climate change and the severe crisis at the end of the Hammurabi dynasty which saw the cities of southern Babylonia abandoned.

This talk will explore the Venus observations which were first recognized in 1860, the Assyrian eclipse record, the dendrochronology (dating based on the analysis of patterns of tree rings) and the record of a worldwide tree growth anomaly that have contributed to finding the correct dates and help to understand this chapter in history.

“Atheists in the Pub” is a free social event hosted by Atheist Ireland. This month’s speaker is comedian Tara Flynn, she will talk about “Why ridiculous beliefs need to be ridiculed?” and there will be a discussion.

The lecture “Quenching the Prairie Fire: the collapse of the GAA in 1890s Ireland” by Dr Richard McElligott (Irish History Lecturer at UCD and Chairman of the Sport History Ireland Society) takes place and admission is free.

“In 1884, the establishment of the Gaelic Athletic Association ushered in a sporting revolution in Ireland. The GAA initiated mass participation in organised sport among ordinary Irishmen. Within four years, it was already the largest sporting body in the country with over 41,000 members and 777 affiliated clubs. Yet, despite this remarkable initial success the 1890s would witness its almost total disintegration. In this talk, Dr McElligott will examine the economic, social and political reasons behind this and will show how, much like today, the GAA across rural Ireland suffered enormously due to the effects of economic recession and emigration. In addition, political dissension, the opposition of the Catholic Church and problems with early Gaelic Games themselves all combined to fatally undermine the national GAA.”

Endless Rain is a spoken word event, featuring a mix of poetry, prose and comedy from upcoming and established Irish talent.

Performers will include award winning poet, playwright and author David Butler (The Judas Kiss); short story writer Boris Belony (Transmorphosis and Other Short Story); and comedian David Reilly (assistant director on the Cannes-bound short film, ‘The Omega Male’).

The event wants to be inspiration for emerging Irish writers, poets and comedians and at the same time a night of wonderful entertainment for anyone who attends.

The King Kong Club is a weekly music game-show in the Mercantile. Each week 6-7 bands/solo artists play three songs each. At the end of all the performances a clap-off with the King Kong Club Clap-o-Meter takes place and the winner goes through to a semi-final and it all culminates after six months of competition with The Grand Final, held in front of a panel of celebrity judges.

The Ferocious Mingle Marcade (Market and Arcade) is back in a new location. The Marcade is now in Camden Street next to Daintree Paper and opposite the Centra and off-license there. It takes place every Thurs-Sun and is a flea-market-type permanent market with stalls and “chalets” for traders.

A new Lunchtime Market will open from Thurs 29 May every Thursday. It’s a good idea to use Merrion Square more for events, but it remains to be seen if a lunchtime market in the park is the right way to do this.

China Meets Ireland is an inter-cultural programme presenting two eras of Chinese and Irish music, featuring traditional Chinese music from a thousand year tradition and new music from China written in the past 10 years and also Irish airs and dance tunes on fiddle and concert flute, Irish Harp and Guitar.

“Roque Dalton. Fusilemos la noche” (2013) by Tina Leisch.

This documentary portrays Roque Dalton’s life story (1935-1975). He is regarded as El Salvador’s most compelling poet. The Salvadoran dictatorships sentenced him to death for his involvement in subversive activities. He escaped execution twice.

The film will be in Spanish with English subtitles. It will be introduced by Roger Atwood.

The weekly European Folk Dance Workshop/Session takes place in the Tap Bar every Thursday.

The Klaas Project is playing original jazz/contemporary compositions of violinist Klara Janu and arrangements of Argentine tango composer Astor Piazzolla. The compositions are inspired by different world cultures.

Supported is provided by bass player Mark Kilcoyne and band, performing original music with classical, jazz and folk influences.

Every year in May, the Bealtaine Festival takes place. It is called a festival “celebrating creativity as we age”. From dance to cinema, painting to theatre, Bealtaine showcases the talents and creativity of both first-time and professional older artists.

The Ferocious Mingle Marcade (Market and Arcade) is back in a new location. The Marcade is now in Camden Street next to Daintree Paper and opposite the Centra and off-license there. It takes place every Thurs-Sun and is a flea-market-type permanent market with stalls and “chalets” for traders.

The National Gallery has an extensive programme of free talks, public tours and Art Documentary screenings focusing on highlights of the European and Irish Collection every day of the week. Check their website for details.

The Woman’s World show is taking place again and I am told it is the 17th year of this event!

With exhibitors and experts from the worlds of Fashion, Health, Food, Beauty and Hair, Women’s Health and Fitness, Wellbeing it is the largest show for Women in Ireland. Over 30,000 women are expected over the weekend (and it helps that every Women’s Mini Marathon participant in Dublin has to go there to collect race number etc).

In addition to the exhibition, there will be pamper zones, health checks, cooking demonstrations, fashion and styling advise, fitness zones and live catwalk shows over the 3 days.
