Parkrun Ireland is organising free weekly runs in parks. It is a timed run over 5km and participation is completely free, but registration before your first parkrun is required.

The Merchants Market on East Wall Road is a weekly indoors flea market on Saturdays and Sundays with more than 80 stalls in a big industrial hall. There is everything from furniture and antiques to paintings and mirrors, electronics and hot food to bicycles and buns. It is just a few minutes walk away from the Point Theatre/O2 (walk in the direction of the Port Tunnel).

An indoor market in Coolock with over 40 traders with a wide range of goods and a café on site as well.

The Dublin Bay Prawn Festival takes place in Howth this Saturday and Sunday.

There will be a focus on seafood with Cookery Demonstrations in the Marquee on both days and with special prawn festival dishes in the restaurants in Howth.

There will be a few free events and activities (History of Howth Walk, Open Days at the RNLI Lifeboat Station and at the Howth Coastguard Station, Biodiversity Activities and the Howth Goats are on display), and for other activities there will be charges (visit the National Transport Museum, the Hurdy Gurdy Radio Museum, enjoy the Fun Fair).

At the Festival Food Fair in the Main Festival Marquee you will be able to buy a variety of Prawn (and other) dishes and then you could go for a walk on Howth Pier or even around Howth Head to make room for more food.

On Saturday evening at 22:00 a Fireworks Display over Howth Harbour will entertain everybody.

Access roads to and from Howth and parking in Howth are very limited and with a festival taking place there, it will get very very busy, especially if the weather is good. If you can, you should use public transport!! …or be prepared for significant delays.

Experience Japan is inviting to a Seminar Day in the Chester Beatty Library. Four talks will take place and the topics are:

The Battle of Clontarf took place in the Clontarf area and never reached to Swords, but when it was all over and Brian Boru had been killed, he was brought to Swords Monastery, which was were now St. Columba’s Church is situated. And with that link in place, Swords also wants to have a Viking Festival.

The Festival takes place from Fri 25-Sun 27 April. I found out about the festival too late to tell you already in last week’s Dublin Event Guide about the Friday events, but I did mention them on the Facebook Page, so it is always a good idea to watch out for updates on www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide

On Saturday and Sunday a Viking Village will Battle Re-enactments, Hands-on activities and information about Archaeology, a Falconry Display and a talk will wait for you from 11:00-17:00 at the castle in Swords. The Ferocious Mingle Marcade (Market and Arcade) is back in a new location. The Marcade is now in Camden Street next to Daintree Paper and opposite the Centra and off-license there. It takes place every Thurs-Sun and is a flea-market-type permanent market with stalls and “chalets” for traders.

The Vikings wore pendants and amulets based on the Norse gods in the hope that they would bring them good luck. Come to the National Museum in Kildare Street to learn more about the beliefs of the Vikings and make your very own Thor’s hammer pendant to take home.

Suitable from Age 6 and it will take place in the Learning Resource Room, first floor. Admission is free.

The current Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “Fail Better” and it will run from 07 Feb – 27 Apr. The title comes from Samuel Beckett’s “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” and the exhibition looks at beautiful and instructive failures. The purpose is to open up a debate on the essential role of failure in human creativity, in technology, science, design, business and sport.

20 unique exhibits, from a pair of explorer boots that caused Ranulph Fiennes to fail in an Everest attempt, via Christopher Reeve’s (Superman) original wheelchair, to a full-scale reconstruction of the the world’s worst or maddest invention: a big table that is meant to assist childbirth using centrifugal force.

I visited the exhibition and I definitely recommend it. Age-wise, I would think that it is suitable for children from Age 12/13 as long as the parents are prepared to read a good bit of explanatory text and then “translate” it for their children. There is no overly complicated stuff, but most of the exhibits are not self-explanatory. But there is a strong reason for bringing your kids: We have in general a negative attitude to Failure. This exhibition will help you to change that!

The weekly Ha’penny Flea Market is an indoor market in the Grand Social Pub, which offers vintage Men and Women’s clothing, contemporary crafts, books, DVDs, vinyl records, vintage and handmade jewellery, vintage hair styles, art, photography and much more. This weekend 100 years ago, the gunrunning into Larne, Bangor and Donaghadee by the Ulster Volunteer Force took place, which was followed by the Howth gun-running in July 1914. The rifles and ammunition smuggled into Howth on board the yacht Asgard and into Kilcoole by Kelpie and Chotah would arm the Irish Volunteers in preparation for the 1916 Rising.

Sandra Heise, curator of Historical Collections, will give an illustrated talk, describing these events in Irish history and their consequences.

A special talk by Michael Kenny, Keeper Emeritus, entitled “Understanding 1916” will follow at 12:40.

Soapbox Science will turn Trinity’s Front Square into a hub of scientific learning and discussion when some of Ireland’s leading female scientists explain their science from a soapbox to everybody listeining to them. Come along to learn and to be inspired. Speakers will talk from their soapboxes in Front Square (whatever the weather!) from 12:00-15:00. The lecture “Antibiotics and the machine that reads our genes” by Nobel Laureate Dr. Venki Ramakrishnan, Nobel Laureate akes place on Saturday. “Dr Ramakrishnan was awarded the Nobel Laureate for his determination of ribosome structure. His studies have revealed much information about antibiotics and also how hereditary information is deciphered in all organisms including plants and humans.”

Cumann na mBan, an Irish republican women’s paramilitary organisation, was founded 100 years ago in Wynn’s Hotel, Abbey Street, on 02 April 1914. At that meeting, attended by approximately 100 women, it signed up to advance the cause of Irish liberty, to organise Irish women in the furtherance of that objective, to assist in arming and equipping a body of Irish men for the defence of Ireland and to form a fund for these purposes to be called the ‘Defence of Ireland Fund’.

Dr. Mary McAuliffe, who is a lecturer in Irish Women’s History at UCD and is President of the Irish Women’s History Association, will discuss the founding of Cumann na mBan, explore the role women played in the nationalist movement, the debates that emerged regarding that role, and the nature of its relationship with the wider women’s suffrage movement.

PhotoFest 2014, Ireland’s largest Photo Trade Show takes place this Sunday.

“Made by Hand” or “Hecho a manos” is a new Sunday weekly market in Viva, Portobello with most things made by hand and some vintage clothing and curiosities too. Admission is free.

The Sundays at Noon Concert Series continues in the Sculpture Gallery at the Hugh Lane Gallery. This series of free (mainly classical) concerts continues to present the best of Irish and International music and musicians. Concerts run from September to June.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. The Irish Wildlife Trust (IWT) Dublin Branch is teaming up with An Taisce South Dublin and DIT this weekend to take part in a clean-up of Booterstown nature reserve and beach.

“This is a very important habitat for a wide variety of bird species, along with countless other flora and fauna. As with many other marine habitats, refuse build-up and littering are serious problems that have a highly negative effect on the area and the life it supports. We’re calling on our supporters to join us to combat this everyday destruction so that we can enjoy the area for many years (and events!) to come.”

Come to the National Print Museum for an afternoon of letterpress printing and talks/readings from “If Ever You Go” co-editor Gerard Smyth. The talk/reading will take at 15:00, the Letterpress Printing (with Mary Plunkett) will take place throughout the afternoon.

In the morning (11:00-13:00), the Centre Stage Players present a “A Dublin Saunter”, which includes Dublin Poetry, Songs and Stories from “If Ever You Go” at the National Print Museum. This event will not be free (EUR 5).

To celebrate Dublin: One City, One Book, the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre will host a series of poetry readings & Performances every Sunday in April. Admission is free.

The Vikings liked to tell stories called sagas about their gods and other mysterious creatures. They also wrote with special symbols called runes. At this Drop-in activity kids (Ages 6+) can work out the secrets of the Viking sagas by deciphering runic riddles.

This is the final event in contemporary musical ensemble Concorde’s series “Up Close With Music” at the RHA Gallery this year.

It features new work by composer Rhona Clarke and artist Marie Hanlon, a 70th birthday tribute to Frank Corcoran, the premiere of a specially composed work by Concorde’s 2014 student composer Patrick Egan, music from Norway and Dublin contemplating ‘dawn’, and music from Icelandic and Irish composers reflecting on ‘breath’.

“Visual storytelling has been with us since the beginning of times. With the capability of the web to provide interactive, dynamic and participatory functionality, stories are starting to take new shapes and forms, allowing for engaging experiences around them. This hackathon event brings together digital storytellers, web developers and designers to collaborate on storytelling projects that can only exist on the web. You will team up to brainstorm ideas, create open-source code and demo prototypes of your own web-native stories.”

The wedding and party band The LJJ Band play every Sunday evening in Café en Seine. Admission is free.

The Samsung Night Run, a 10km run on Sunday evening, will take place this week. It will start at 21:00 and finish at 22:20, but streets in the area will be closed already from 18:45 and until 23:00. The start is near Customs House and the Finish is on North Wall Quay, near the CHQ building.

The whole area from Customs House Quay to the Point (on the North Side) and from City Quay to the Grand Canal Dock (on the South Side) will be affected by rolling or full road closures.

The event is NOT free and there will not be any additional entertainment programme for spectators, but you are more than welcome to watch the spectacle and to support and cheer on the runners.

The Gardiner Street Gospel Choir Mass invites to a Mass in St. Francis Xavier Church at the top of Gardiner Street near the junction with Dorset Street every Sunday at 19:30. Around the world people are campaigning for the introduction of a financial transaction tax (also called the Robin Hood Tax), believing that banks, hedge funds and the rest of the financial sector should pay their fair share of the global financial crisis.

In the EU 11 countries are currently preparing to introduce a financial transactions tax under a special procedure, but the Itish Government is not part of it. Germany, France, Greece and Spain will adopt the tax.

“Claiming our Future”, an Irish non-party-political civil society network that works for equality, environmental sustainability, participation, accountability and solidarity, wants to discuss the arguments for and against Ireland introducing the Financial Transaction Tax.

Dr. Micheál Collins (Nevin Economic Research Institute) and Brendan Bruen (Financial Services Ireland/IBEC) discuss the topic.

“Microcredit & Bank Exclusion” is the title of a talk by Georges Gloukoviezoff, researcher in UCD, in which he will present the results of his study of the Irish Finance Market.

The screening of the documentary “Al final de la escapada” (2010) is taking place and admission is free. (In Spanish and Catalan with English subtitles).

The film tells the story of Miguel Núnez, a man who was fourteen years in General Franco’s jails, was sentenced to death, tortured and risked his life repeatedly for his dreams of universal social justice.

The RDS Library Speaker Series continues with a talk by Diarmaid Ferriter “Scrambling for the bones of the Patriot Dead – The Irish Revolution (1912-23) and the politics and culture of memory and commemoration”.

Diarmaid Ferriter is one of Ireland’s best-known historians and Professor of Modern Irish History at UCD.

This lecture will look at some of the issues involved in the decade of commemorations (2012-23) from the perspective of the historian, but also the questions it raises for society at large in terms of what is remembered, how it is remembered and communicated.

“Troubling Tourism: Negotiating Class and Gender in Argentine Tango” is a lecture by Dr Maria Törnqvist (University of Uppsala) as part of the ‘Transformative Periphery: Negotiating Identities from the Margins’ Lecture Series.

Dr Törnqvist will assess how, in an explosive economic and political context, people’s emotional lives intermingle with a tourism industry that has formed at the intersection of close embrace dances and dollars.

The launch of the poetry collection “Other Places” by Jean Kavanagh will take place with John Boyne. Admission is free.

This is Jean Kavanagh’s first poetry collection and it moves between diverse but not incidental locations: Dublin, Clare, Oslo and the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Kavanagh is not a nomad in the sense of someone wandering aimlessly, but nomadic as in following a fixed pattern of movement.

The King Kong Club is a weekly music game-show in the Mercantile. Each week 6-7 bands/solo artists play three songs each. At the end of all the performances a clap-off with the King Kong Club Clap-o-Meter takes place and the winner goes through to a semi-final and it all culminates after six months of competition with The Grand Final, held in front of a panel of celebrity judges.

“The Song Room” is another open mic event. It takes place in The Globe in George’s Street at 20:30 every Wednesday.

“Giving birth at the Spanish Habsburg Court, 1570-1644” is the title of a free lecture by Dr Maria Cruz de Carlos (Museo Nacional del Prado. Dept. of Prints and Drawings ) as part of the 2nd Annual TCD-Worth Library Lecture in the History of Medieval and Renaissance Science and Medicine.

“All You Need is Love” is a print exhibition in support of Marriage Equality.

The exhibition will showcase work by over 20 of Ireland’s established and emerging artists, with several pieces from international contributors. The exhibition will be opened by Panti, drag queen and marriage rights activist.

Limited edition prints inspired by the theme All You Need Is Love will be on sale for EUR 30, with all profits going to Marriage Equality.

Contributing artists include ADW, Danleo, Will St. Leger, Denise Nestor, Matthew Griffin and London-based design studios Pony and Villalba Lawson. DJs from Dublin’s Saturday night LGBT club, Mother, will provide the soundtrack to this event. Admission is free and all are welcome.

The next RDS Economic Recovery Lecture is “Dairymaster – A case study of a leading Irish Agricultural Technology Firm”. Dr Edmond Harty, CEO of Dairymaster, and 2012 Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year will share his insights on how Dairymaster, a family-owned Irish company, has become one of the leading dairy innovation and technology companies in the world.

Leadarise are an organisation that helps young women take ownership of their careers and they organise free networking events for young women in Brussels, London, New York and Dublin.

If you are a young woman between the ages of 25 and 35 (or thereabouts!) you are invited to join them for some networking in a relaxed easy atmosphere after work on Thursday. Admission is free, just buy a drink or whatever you fancy from the bar and join the group in the reserved area.

The Dublin City Libraries in association with Dublin City Enterprise Board are inviting to a series of six free business lectures designed to empower potential entrepreneurs. The National Print Museum hosts an exhibition (25 March-27 May) of Irish political ephemera (things that exist or are used or enjoyed for only a short time) covering general and local elections, referendums European and presidential elections from the 1970s to the early 2010s. The exhibition includes ballot papers, election leaflets, posters, and pamphlets.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a short tour and lecture series with its curators (Dr Ciaran Swan (NCAD) and Alan Kinsella) on the following dates: Thursday 03 April at 18.30; Thursday 10 April at 18.30; Sunday 13 April at 11.00 and Thursday 01 May at 18.30.

Youth Mental Health organisation ReachOut.com is inviting to an discussion in the Smock Alley Theatre about “Are we over exposing ourselves and sharing too much private information? The weekly European Folk Dance Workshop/Session takes place in the Tap Bar every Thursday.

Every Thursday “Left Right & Centre” play a mix of blues & soul with a bit of rock&roll.

Every Thursday a free Trad Session takes place in McNeills and often there are high profile Trad musicians performing.

Interskalactic are a new Ska band from Dublin, playing traditional, old school, first wave, big band Jamaican Ska. They will perform on the Harbour Stage at the Bray Jazz Festival. Admission is free.

The Zebra Club features this week Silent Noise, Parade, Staring at Lakes. The gig will start at midnight and admission is free if you arrive before 22:30 or if you sign up for the guest list via the website below.

The Bray Jazz Festival will take place this weekend. The first gig is already on Thursday night and the last gig will be on Monday, but apart from that the festival will mainly go from Friday until Sunday (02-04 May).

There are plenty of free gigs taking place in pubs, bars and restaurants of Bray and on the Harbour Stage. In addition there are non-free events with somewhat higher profile performers in the Town Hall and in the Mermaid Arts Centre.

The Dublin City Rounders are brothers Rohan and Alex Healy and they will perform American ragtime, swing and blues in Mother Reilly’s. Admission is free.

The Booka Brass Band, a seven piece New Orleans style Brass Band, are performing on the Harbour Stage at the Bray Jazz Festival on Friday. Admission is free.

Eight different performances take place on the Molson Canadian sponsored Jazz Trail at the Bray Jazz Festival. Two will start at 19:30, the rest will start at 22:00 and admission to all events on the Jazz Trail is free.
