A weekly car boot sale, one of less than a handful that is still reliably taking place, has up to 200 cars/sellers. For the Birds is a newly commissioned ephemeral event by James Ó hAodha (IE), featuring a Macaw, a Cockatoo, and an African Grey Parrot.

As part of the exhibition, Tonight, you can call me Trish, artist James Ó hAodha has created an encounter with a specific community of interest: Teasing out notions of what constitutes ‘audience’ and ‘exhibition’, the artist plays with the presence of three hand-picked exotic birds, a Macaw, a Cockatoo, and an African Grey Parrot.

The birds will be in the gallery simultaneously both as viewer and live performer, activating, intervening and becoming complicit with the language of display, aesthetics, and the mediation of contemporary visual art. Exhibition tours will run every 40 minutes, from 11:00-15:00 (duration: 15 minutes).

Admission is free and no booking required. The timings can change and there might be limited access in the gallery at times depending on the birds behaviour.

The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “Fail Better” and it will run from 07 Feb – 27 Apr. The title comes from Samuel Beckett’s “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” and the exhibition looks at beautiful and instructive failures. The purpose is to open up a debate on the essential role of failure in human creativity, in technology, science, design, business and sport.

20 unique exhibits, from a pair of explorer boots that caused Ranulph Fiennes to fail in an Everest attempt, via Christopher Reeve’s (Superman) original wheelchair, to a full-scale reconstruction of the the world’s worst or maddest invention: a big table that is meant to assist childbirth using centrifugal force.

I visited the exhibition and I definitely recommend it. Age-wise, I would think that it is suitable for children from Age 12/13 as long as the parents are prepared to read a good bit of explanatory text and then “translate” it for their children. There is no overly complicated stuff, but most of the exhibits are not self-explanatory. But there is a strong reason for bringing your kids: We have in general a negative attitude to Failure. This exhibition will help you to change that!

Admission is free and opening hours are Tues-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

The weekly Ha’penny Flea Market is an indoor market in the Grand Social Pub, which offers vintage Men and Women’s clothing, contemporary crafts, books, DVDs, vinyl records, vintage and handmade jewellery, vintage hair styles, art, photography and much more. The Storytelling Session “Cuenta Cunetos” in the Instituto Cervantes consists of four Saturdays with stories. “Made by Hand” or “Hecho a manos” is a new Sunday weekly market in Viva, Portobello with most things made by hand and some vintage clothing and curiosities too. Admission is free.

Nowruz (“New Day” in Persian) is a traditional New Year celebration at the Spring Equinox (20/21 March). The following communities celebrate the day in Dublin: Afghan, Azerbaijani, Baha’I, Iranian, Kazakh, Kurdish and Turkish.

This year they invite everybody to join them for a Family Day on Sunday on Meeting House Square. There will me music and dance performances, arts and crafts workshop for kids and food and craft stalls.

The Sundays at Noon Concert Series continues in the Sculpture Gallery at the Hugh Lane Gallery. This series of free (mainly classical) concerts continues to present the best of Irish and International music and musicians. Concerts run from September to June. The next concert will feature Annette Cleary (cello) and Padhraic O Cuinneagain (piano) celebrating composer Tom Cullivan with “Tom Cullivan – a 75th birthday tribute”.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Unlike the three branches of the National Museum, the National Print Museum is normally not free, but every Sunday there is a free public tour for the next few weeks. Every visit begins with a short audio-visual presentation where the audience can observe active retired printers providing practical demonstrations of machines from the Museum’s collection.

A weekly Jazz gig will take place in the Sunshine Cafe for your Sunday afternoon entertainment. The Jazzwise Duo (piano and double bass) play classic jazz including Broadway standards, Bossa Nova, Blues etc

Kizomba is one of the most popular genres of dance and music in Angola and if you are interested you can take part in a free introduction class on Sunday from 16:00.

The Silk Road Film Festival runs from 20-25 March and shows films from countries which were once part of the historical network of ancient trade routes, called Silk Road. The festival focuses in particular on Asian, Arabian and Middle Eastern cinema.

Most of the screenings are free and only a few have a very low admission charge (EUR 3), which is great, but surprisingly the organisers only published the programme on Thursday 20 March. Maybe a little late if the events start on the same day? You unfortunately missed the events on 20 and on the main day, on Fri 21 March because of that, but check out the programme nevertheless.

The “Havana International Language Exchange” is taking place every Wed from 16:30-19:30 in Havana Tapas Bar in George’s Street. The next talk in the RDS Library Speaker Series will see John Killen talk about “A Lost Irish Manuscript Found”.

“Belfast’s Linen Hall Library is the city’s oldest Library. In 2013 it celebrated 225 years of existence. John Killen is its current Librarian. He will relate the fascinating story behind an important, but until recently lost Irish manuscript on which he has been engaged in research. The manuscript has a dynastic and romantic purpose. Assiduously researched, but unsigned, its authorship will now be revealed, 225 years after its completion. John will narrate the story contained within the manuscript covering the history and lineage of a famous Irish dynasty.”

The lecture will be followed by a reception for the launch of a facsimile copy of the manuscript in the RDS Library.

Fractal Music Dublin present “Recital”, in association with Trinity’s Arts Technology Research Lab (ATRL).

The King Kong Club is a weekly music game-show in the Mercantile. Each week 6-7 bands/solo artists play three songs each. At the end of all the performances a clap-off with the King Kong Club Clap-o-Meter takes place and the winner goes through to a semi-final and it all culminates after six months of competition with The Grand Final, held in front of a panel of celebrity judges.

The list of performers is not yet announced on their Facebook Page and I am not sure if it will be put up there, but check it anyway.

Every Wednesday the Comedy Improv show “Laughter Lines” takes place in The Duke (between Grafton Street and Dawson Street). Normally admission is EUR 8, but for one more Wednesday admission is free.

The Five Lamps Arts Festival is a great and very successful local festival of the wider area around the “Five Lamps” on Amiens Street and North Strand Road. The National College of Ireland are running a series of talks that delve into the different, fascinating areas of psychology. We have heard from expert speakers about the mind of a psychopath, the reality of cyber bullying and this next talk will take a look at the role of early adversity in the onset of psychotic experiences.

FAIL BIG: A Late Night Extravaganza of Spectacular Failure takes place on Friday.

Join in as the Science Gallery turns into a #FAILBETTER festival that explores the flipside of flops, the desirability of disasters, the magic of mistakes, loveable losers, and the coolness of collapse. This late night cabaret of calamities will feature live music from Heathers, short talks, comedy improv, and short plays… maybe even some games (although don’t expect to win).
