Hi all!
I was away last week on a rare holiday. We went to Tromso in Norway and had a super time. The Northern Lights showed up (just minutes before our “Northern Light Hunt” came to an end) and we had the best time with Huskies and a sled. Dog sledding is an amazing experience, especially if you mush (“drive” the sled) yourself. If you want to know more about this amazing Norway trip, drop me a mail (dublineventguide@gmail.com) and if a few people are interested, I might include a brief (or longer) travel report here next week. And if you want to do a tour like that yourself, check out www.project-travel.ie/Norway_Arctic_Northern_Lights_Holidays.html Project Travel are THE Norway experts!
[ad]
We came back on Thursday, but flight times and Northern Light Hunt worked in such a way that I didn’t sleep on Wednesday night, only had a bit of sleep in the plane. Then on Thursday I started writing the Dublin Event Guide after an early evening nap and worked through the night and now on Saturday morning I am still not finished. Why that delay? Because I couldn’t keep my eyes open! Apologies for the delay, everybody. That is not good! But I was unable to keep working. It will be better again next week! Promise!
Here are the weekly pleas for your help and then let’s get started with the events:
The bill for sending the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) week after week through a professional E-mail sending company is a relatively low EUR 170 every month, but because I am not earning a cent from this work, I need your help with that. If you can help with a donation or maybe through your company with sponsorship, I appreciate it hugely. ANY amount is appreciated, but I suggest a donation of between EUR 12 and EUR 20. At EUR 12, that’s just EUR 1 per month! If you don’t have EUR 1 per month, then this weekly e-mail magazine is my gift for you. I can imagine how tough it is being in financial difficulties and I hope your situation will improve soon. If you do have EUR 1 per month to help keeping the Dublin Event Guide going, please do so at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm Thanks!
And finally: Please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 19,800 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 42,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
Two simple sentences today! They are simple, but spend a few minutes thinking about how it applies in your life:
Ego says: “Once everything falls into place, I will find peace.” Spirit says: “Find peace and everything will fall into place.”

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
Last week the wonderful people that helped with a donation were Martina D, Pascale N, Carol McN and Meret C. Thanks a lot for your help! Every bit counts and YOUR help is absolutely needed too to ensure that you – and everyone else – will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week.
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills. Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
Today I am picking the Sandymount Repair Cafe (What a great idea!) and the Splendid Lunatics Improv Show (Sounds interesting!) and the new and different Smithfield Horse Fair (I am recommending it with some hesitation, but hopefully the changes work.) and Carnaval in Sweeney’s (Great bands for a good night out).
And the rest you have to check yourself. I am running out of time today to select more things for you. ;-)

New Food Market in Dublin from 2015
Good news for Dublin! The Victorian fruit and vegetable market between Capel Street and Four Courts will be redeveloped and will open in 2015 as a food market. 80 traders will find space there. Some indoors, some outoors, some permanent, some temporary. It sounds very promising and would be a great enhancement to Dublin. I imagine something like the food market just off the Ramblas in Barcelona, hopefully the food will be as good! ;-)

Trade School Dublin – You can register
On Sat 08 March a one-day only Trade School will take place in the Dominick Street Community Centre, Dublin 1.
Trade School is an adult workshop where people barter for knowledge. Knowledge is practical skills, talents, hobbies and experience. Anyone can teach, anyone can learn and no teaching experience is required. Everyone is welcome to attend classes and no money will exchange hands, instead teachers give their knowledge in return for items.
Last week I included an appeal for teachers to step forward. Now the schedule for the day of training has been put together and you can book your places. Register here www.tradeschool.coop/dublin

New Cultural and Heritage Centre at College Green!
And there is more good news for Dublin: It has been announced that a new Cultural and Heritage Centre will be created at Parliament Buildings at College Green. Bank of Ireland has made the space available for the centre for a ten year period, and will cover the costs of refurbishment and operation of the new facility. The Cultural and Heritage Centre will be accessed via the James Gandon-designed entrance to the College Green buildings on Westmoreland Street.
It will be great to take that historic building (at least partially) back from bank use to public use. www.rte.ie/ten/news/2014/0224/506378-trinity-college-welcomes-heritage-centre/

Donating to the Dublin Event Guide for free!?
Do you happily receive the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) every week? And do you make use of it at least sometimes? And would you like to help to keep it going? If you read this, then the answer is probably three times YES!
But I understand that giving a donation is not everybody’s thing. I can assure you that it will only be used to cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide, but wouldn’t it be even neater if you could give money without having to use your own?
This is indeed possible! When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
www.bookdepository.co.uk?a_aid=dubevg for Book Depository and www.amazon.co.uk/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1634&creative=6738&linkCode=ur2&tag=dubeveguiforf-21 for Amazon
You can also copy these links and send them to your friends. When you click on the link you books cost exactly the same as if you went to the Amazon or Book Depository website directly. But if you go via my links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8%. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it still would amount to a fair amount.
And if you want to buy from Groupon use this www.awin1.com/cread.php?s=344250&v=4345&q=162396&r=140544 or for LivingSocial use this www.awin1.com/awclick.php?mid=4319&id=140544
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) Thanks!

This section is intended to feature new startup companies and projects. Opportunities that people saw and that they chose not to ignore. I am, however, experiencing a little technical problem with this section, so for now I won’t be able to use it. I will keep you posted.
|
Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

The Enclave – Richard Moss – Multi-media installation
30 Jan – 12 Mar
Royal Hibernian Academy, 15 Ely Place, Dublin 2
Throughout 2012, Richard Mosse and his collaborators Trevor Tweeten and Ben Frost travelled in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, infiltrating armed rebel groups in a war zone plagued by frequent ambushes, massacres and systematic violence. The resulting installation, The Enclave, is the culmination of Mosses’ attempt to radically rethink war photography. It is a search for more adequate strategies to represent a forgotten African tragedy in which 5.4 million people have died of war-related causes in eastern Congo since 1998. www.rhagallery.ie/exhibitions/theenclave/

Fail Better – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 01 Mar
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “Fail Better” and it will run from 07 Feb – 27 Apr. The title comes from Samuel Beckett’s “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” and the exhibition looks at beautiful and instructive failures. The purpose is to open up a debate on the essential role of failure in human creativity, in technology, science, design, business and sport.
20 unique exhibits, from a pair of explorer boots that caused Ranulph Fiennes to fail in an Everest attempt, via Christopher Reeve’s (Superman) original wheelchair, to a full-scale reconstruction of the the world’s worst or maddest invention: a big table that is meant to assist childbirth using centrifugal force.
I visited the exhibition and I definitely recommend it. Age-wise, I would think that it is suitable for children from Age 12/13 as long as the parents are prepared to read a good bit of explanatory text and then “translate” it for their children. There is no overly complicated stuff, but most of the exhibits are not self-explanatory. But there is a strong reason for bringing your kids: We have in general a negative attitude to Failure. This exhibition will help you to change that!
Admission is free and opening hours are Tues-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

Sandymount Repair Cafe
14:00 – 17:00, Sat 01 Mar
Christchurch Hall, Sandymount Green, Sandymount, Dublin 4
This is a free event where everyone is invited to come along with broken possessions (such as household items, bikes, clothes, electronic goods, toys and so on) and learn how to repair them alongside expert volunteers in a café environment. In doing so you can find out how easy and satisfying it is to repair instead of buying new, and save money in the process. If you have nothing to repair, you can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee or share your skills and lend a hand with someone else’s repair job. There will be plenty for kids to do too.
What a great idea! Hopefully this will become a regular event.

Smithfield Horse Fair
10:30 – 13:30, Sun 02 Mar
Smithfield Plaza, Dublin 7
The Smithfield Horse Fair was a long standing institution where for many years at the first Sunday in every month, horse traders (mainly from the travelling community) came together to sell and buy horses. The fair is a right that is firmly written down. However, bad treatment of animals, anti-social behaviour and other problems (even a shooting) turned this horse market into a nightmare for Dublin City.
Instead of stopping it, Dublin City decided to limit the market to twice per year and so the newly regulated Smithfield Horse Fair takes place on the first Sunday in March and in September.
To take the trading element out somewhat and to add another “softer” dynamic, music, storytelling and other entertainment was added.
The March Horse Fair is the first this year and only the third since the changes to the new rules and nobody knows yet if it will still be a horse market or maybe not anymore because the traders stay away and sell and buy their horses elsewhere.
The Entertainment will run from 10:30 until 13:30:
+ 10:30 Slide Guitarist / 11:00 Story session / 11:30 Traditional Irish music / 12:00 Slide Guitarist / 12:30 Story session / 13:00 Traditional Irish music

Fail Better – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sun 02 Mar

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. With the onset of modernity in the eighteenth century, there emerged new narratives and ways of thinking not only about the state but also about the nation. In this lecture, Dr Marius will work with two conceptually related strategies: the first places eugenics and modernity in a reciprocal relationship; the second studies the way in which eugenic ideas worked towards the ideal of a healthy and strong nation.

09:00, Wed 05 Mar
Various OPW locations in Dublin
Entry charges at nearly all OPW sites are waived once a month. The Office of Public Works (OPW) wants to encourage people to visit the historic sites that it manages and has therfore started this initiative in 2011.
Most OPW owned sites can already be visited for free, but the sites that normally charge a fee will be free every first Wednesday as well. In the (extended) Greater Dublin Area this means you can visit the following sites for free: + The Casino, Marino (closed from 01 Nov-13 March) + Dublin Castle, State Apartments + Kilmainham Gaol + Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre at Newgrange + Glendalough Visitor Centre in Wicklow
As you can imagine, this event is very popular and therfore it is strongly recommended to arrive early at the venues. Once the day’s tickets are given out, you will not get access anymore.

Imagining National Cuisines
19:00, Wed 05 Mar
JM Synge Theatre, Arts Building, Trinity College, Dublin 2
Professor Sami Zubaida (Emeritus Professor Birkbeck College, University of London Professional Research Associate, Food Studies Centre, SOAS) talks about “Imagining National Cuisines”.
Themes of food, gastronomy, nutrition and ecology have become increasingly prominent in public discourses and the global media, aided by movements of people and goods and the spread of diasporic communities in the West. This has stimulated definitions and constructions of ideas of national and regional cuisines, with historical speculations on origins and diffusions. These themes will be examined with particular reference to the Middle East and the Mediterranean, with comparisons to other regions.
Admission is free, but registration is required via the website below.

Printing at Sea
15:00, Fri 07 Mar
DIT, 41-47 Mountjoy Square, Dublin 1
“Ocean Bound: Stories about Printing at Sea” is a lecture by Typography Ireland.
The large ocean liners of the early to mid-twentieth century have become symbols of both luxury and tragedy. Ephemera associated with them has always held souvenir status but few would realise that much of it was printed wholly or in part on board the ships themselves. In this session, Teresa Breathnach will consider how these print shops developed to produce a variety of items from menus to newspapers and Jamie Murphy will give an insight into the creation of his award winning artist’s book Albert, Ernest and the Titanic.
Admission is free and all are welcome, but you are asked to send an email to bellclare@gmail.com or maryann.bolger@dit.ie to let them know if you would like to attend.

Dublin Sidewalk Astronomers
20:00, Fri 07 Mar
Martello Tower Car Park, Sandymount
The Dublin Sidewalk Astronomers meet at the Martello Tower car park in Sandymount for a public star-gazing. Members bring along their telescopes and share the wonders of the night-sky with you. Admission is free.
This event happens regularly on a Friday, but in March there are two nights of star gazing on Friday 07 March and Saturday 08 March. The Friday event is the normal monthly observing night. The Saturday event is the Irish Astronomical Society’s participation in ISAN 7, the Seventh International Sidewalk Astronomy Night. This year ISAN is specially dedicated to the memory of John Dobson (1915-2014) who started the idea of Sidewalk Astronomy in San Francisco. The idea spread to amateur astronomical societies around the world.
Both events are weather dependent, so check www.irishastrosoc.org/events/events.htm after 18:00 on the night in the case of poor weather, to check if it is going ahead.

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)
Expensive Ireland? Meet Norway!
I was in Norway for a few days last week and we had an amazing time with Northern Light sightings and dog sledding, but apart from all these great things, there was one aspect that definitely was an eye opener: Often enough I complain about crazy expensive prices here in Ireland, but I had not expected that it can be SIGNIFICANTLY more expensive elsewhere.
A 1.5l bottle of Coke in a supermarket is EUR 3 in Norway. In Ireland you get a 2l bottle for EUR 1.50-2.00 sometimes. An 500ml bottle is approx. EUR 1-1.50 here. It is just EUR 0.60 in Germany, but it is a whopping EUR 2.40 in Norway. And we are talking about supermarket prices here!
And less comparable food? A normal pizza can cost you EUR 30 in Norway! That is just shocking.
You are wondering if the salaries are higher than in Ireland? And you are right! They are definitely higher, so it seems that people there can afford these prices, but for us – even for us living in Ireland – they are just amazing.
Maybe I will complain a little less here now? Just maybe! ;-)
Once you get over the initial shock it won’t get that much easier, but you start accepting and for the four days we were there, it was acceptable. All the other parts of the holidays definitely made up for it anyway. It was a great holiday, I have to say!

If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself. This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com. BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information. Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
