Hi all!
Are you holding on tight to all your belongings? This is the worst year – as far as I can remember – for strong winds around that time of the year. The December/January/February period comes with quite strong winds in Ireland in most years, but this year it is extra strong. Having said that, we are soooo lucky in Dublin that we didn’t have to endure the main force of the winds, but were on the periphery only. In Cork and Kerry people felt the world was coming to an end in recent weeks. The great news is, though, that we are nearly through with it. So hold on to everything you care about so that it is not blown away and look forward to the calmer rest of the year.

I hope you had a nice day on Friday. Some call it Valentine’s Day, others call it Friday. ;-) Either way, I hope you had a good day and if you need to feel a bit more love, then just feel the love that the Dublin Event Guide Community spreads. ;-) Nearly 20,000 subscribers and nearly 43,000 Facebook Likes, there is lots of love around. :-P
And if you want to share that love even a bit more, then just tell everybody about the Dublin Event Guide (fore Free Events) and get them to signup for the weekly e-mail magazine and also to LIKE the Facebook Page. Thanks!
Here are the weekly pleas for your help and then let’s get started with the events:
The bill for sending the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) week after week through a professional E-mail sending company is a relatively low EUR 170 every month, but because I am not earning a cent from this work, I need your help with that. If you can help with a donation or maybe through your company with sponsorship, I appreciate it hugely. ANY amount is appreciated, but I suggest a donation of between EUR 12 and EUR 20. At EUR 12, that’s just EUR 1 per month! If you don’t have EUR 1 per month, then this weekly e-mail magazine is my gift for you. I can imagine how tough it is being in financial difficulties and I hope your situation will improve soon. If you do have EUR 1 per month to help keeping the Dublin Event Guide going, please do so at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm Thanks!
And finally: Please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 19,800 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 42,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
Watch this video www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcXU7G6zhjU it is about the completely improvised rescue of a whale that got caught in a net. A great deed of people that took action when it was necessary. They worked really really hard and managed to free the whale, but the most impressive thing is what follows after the rescue: The whale celebrates being free again and performs a “show” for his rescuers – possibly to thank you!
Amazing that people can communicate with a whale and vice versa, but often people have trouble to talk to other people. It is just beautiful to see how this amazing animal shows its gratitude!

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
Last week the wonderful people that helped with a donation were Bill G, Joe R, Catherine O’S, Tom McM. Thanks a lot for your help! Every bit counts and YOUR help is absolutely needed too to ensure that you – and everyone else – will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week.
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
It is a somewhat quieter week again, but I guess with the mad weather we are having, most of us don’t want to leave the house too much anyway.
Recommendations for this week are the Career Zoo on Sat if you are looking for a job and the Printfest, a great demonstration of how printing was done until a few years ago, also on Saturday. On Sunday, try out the Brocante Vintage Market and – if you didn’t go yet – also put the Science Gallery “Fail Better” Exhibition on your list again.

Uber has arrived in Dublin!
If you have heard ANY tech/IT entrepreneurs telling their story in the last 2 years or so, I bet they mentioned a company called “Uber” (which should really be spelled Über, but Umlauts are not a strength of the English speaking world). Uber is a venture-funded startup that started in San Francisco. They have a mobile application that connects passengers with drivers of vehicles for hire and these vehicles are not taxis, but would be limousines or what was the hackney service in Ireland years back.
Because it is app based, it is a definite competitor to Hailo-connected taxis and it possibly was the app that gave the people around Hailo the idea to go that way. Uber is amazingly valued at 3.76 bio dollars.
Uber has now secretly arrived in Dublin as well. The first Uber trip was secretly made in Dublin on 10 Jan and the test phase continues. If you want to travel in style, check www.uber.com/cities/dublin Previously there were discounts available for during the test phase, but I am not sure if that still applies. Check the two links above.

Tower Records is moving!
When you are reading this, Tower Records is in the middle of a massive move. The complete shops is moving from Wicklow Street (opposite Brown Thomas) to their new premises in Dawson Street (where the Waterstones Book shop was). Lock, Stock and Barrel they are moving everything over and will probably have LOTS of space in the new place to add more products and features etc.
Tower Records regularly have In-Store events, where bands are performing live and signing autographs and admission is nearly always free. With more space in the new shop, let’s hope that they will have even more events like that (and that they get better in spreading the word! ;-) )
Tower Records will re-open early next week, but a specific date has not been announced yet.
In their old place in Wicklow Street, the upmarket Swedish fashion brand COS (owned by the same company that owns H&M) will open, according to this article.

Superquinn is no more!
Superquinn is gone for good…at least the name!
The company was founded in 1960 as ‘Quinns Supermarkets’ in Dundalk by Feargal Quinn and was once the most progressive and modern supermarket in Ireland. With loyalty cards already in 1993, and with a big focus on customer service (It came with a significantly higher price for products, though!) Superquinn was revolutionary.
Until 2005 the company was owned by the Quinn family. It then was run by a consortium of property developers and it was run into the ground: 2011 a receiver was appointed and then Superquinn was bought by Musgraves, the owners of Centra, SuperValu, Mace in Northern Ireland and Londis in the UK.
The Musgraves Group originally ran Superquinn as a separate business, but on Thursday (13 Feb) all 24 Superquinn shops were rebranded and are now part of the 223 SuperValu shops in Ireland.

Donating to the Dublin Event Guide for free!?
Do you happily receive the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) every week? And do you make use of it at least sometimes? And would you like to help to keep it going? If you read this, then the answer is probably three times YES!
But I understand that giving a donation is not everybody’s thing. I can assure you that it will only be used to cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide, but wouldn’t it be even neater if you could give money without having to use your own?
This is indeed possible! When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
www.bookdepository.co.uk?a_aid=dubevg for Book Depository and
www.amazon.co.uk/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1634&creative=6738&linkCode=ur2&tag=dubeveguiforf-21 for Amazon
You can also copy these links and send them to your friends. When you click on the link you books cost exactly the same as if you went to the Amazon or Book Depository website directly. But if you go via my links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8%. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it still would amount to a fair amount.
And if you want to buy from
Groupon use this www.awin1.com/cread.php?s=344250&v=4345&q=162396&r=140544 or for
LivingSocial use this www.awin1.com/awclick.php?mid=4319&id=140544
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) Thanks!

This section is intended to feature new startup companies and projects. Opportunities that people saw and that they chose not to ignore. I am, however, experiencing a little technical problem with this section, so for now I won’t be able to use it. I will keep you posted.
|
Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

100 Years Ago – A Reflection on the 1913 Lockout – in Paintings and Sculpture
01 Jan – 28 Feb
Axis, Main Street, Ballymun, Dublin 9
RADE (Recovery through Art, Drama, and Education) worked with several participants on the production of an art exhibit based on the 1913 Lockout. Over eight months, the artists immersed themselves in the stories and history of the Lockout. The participants, many of whom are not originally artists, created art for this historical event. From paintings to wood and plaster sculptures, a work of emotional response to the trials faced by working class people during the 1913 Lockout emerged.

Fail Better – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 15 Feb
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “Fail Better” and it will run from 07 Feb – 27 Apr. The title comes from Samuel Beckett’s “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” and the exhibition looks at beautiful and instructive failures. The purpose is to open up a debate on the essential role of failure in human creativity, in technology, science, design, business and sport.
20 unique exhibits, from a pair of explorer boots that caused Ranulph Fiennes to fail in an Everest attempt, via Christopher Reeve’s (Superman) original wheelchair, to a full-scale reconstruction of the the world’s worst or maddest invention: a big table that is meant to assist childbirth using centrifugal force.
I visited the exhibition and I definitely recommend it. Age-wise, I would think that it is suitable for children from Age 12/13 as long as the parents are prepared to read a good bit of explanatory text and then “translate” it for their children. There is no overly complicated stuff, but most of the exhibits are not self-explanatory. But there is a strong reason for bringing your kids: We have in general a negative attitude to Failure. This exhibition will help you to change that!
Admission is free and opening hours are Tues-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

Printfest – Engineers Week 2014
12:00 – 16:00, Sat 15 Feb
National Print Museum, Beggars Bush, Haddington Road, Dublin 4
Printfest gives you the opportunity to see the ‘engineering’ behind the traditional craft of letterpress printing, as volunteer active retired printers and typesetters demonstrate highlights of the Museum’s collection and share stories about their time in the printing industry. Printfest is suitable for all ages, with many printing and craft activities for all the family to enjoy.
This is a really interesting event and it is often fascinating to listen to the stories of the retired printers. At some points the historic printing machines will remain, but nobody will be able to explain them anymore, so use the opportunity now to hear about them.
Admission is free.

Lads mar Dads – TV Programme
21:30, Sun 16 Feb
Dublin (various locations)
“Lads mar Dads” is a new 6-week series of reality TV on TG4, which will be broadcast every Sunday at 21.30 from 16 February. (It will be repeated on Mondays at 19:30.)
This series takes a look at what fatherhood is really like for the first timers in Ireland today. Will they be the metroseksual [wrong spelling because of spam filters!] fathers with the man-bag on hand at all times, ready to change a nappy in any situation, or will they lapse into the traditional role of the Dad and leave it to “those who know best”? How do today’s new fathers really cope with the biggest change in their living conditions, ever?
Each week various experts discuss all things Daddy and Baby, from childrens’ allowance to the baby with reflux, to the couple planning their first night out on the town since the baby was born. But the Dads will have their say too, with well known dads Nicky Byrne, Ray d’Arcy, Bernard Dunne and Dara Ó Cinnéide telling you how it was for them and what the lads should expect.

Painting in Parenthesis – Talk
19:00, Wed 19 Feb
Green On Red Gallery, 26-28 Lombard Street East, Dublin 2
The talk “Painting in Parenthesis (In Brackets!): Where does the medium end and the idea begin?” takes place and it seems there is no Admission Charge.
Since the 1960s, the conceptual justification for painting practice has forced many would-be painters to discard their painting brushes altogether for another medium or even career. Before Conceptualism and Rosalind Krauss’ heralding of the “post-medium condition”, painting was happy just being painting; with historical and metaphysical self-justification. Then, following Clement Greenberg – when art was art and everything else was everything else – art began its vanity project of self-reflection. The What? and Why? of art was posited. Painting was speechless in the interrogation lights of this conceptual, contextual and academic turn.

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)
Ripped off! – Is it St. Valentine or Ireland?
Don’t get me wrong, I am not Anti-St. Valentine’s Day! I don’t think that one single day should be the only day you show your partner (or loved ones) that you love them, but there is no problem with the day as such. You could easily use the reminder of the day to do something special three days before or three days after and pay significantly less for restaurant, flowers etc.
But it is not flowers or restaurants I want to mention here today. It is much smaller and less important: While writing the Dublin Event Guide this week, I was listening to Newstalk and heard a radio ad for Dunnes Stores. In this few-second-long ad, I found out the amazing news that Ferrero Rocher costs “only” EUR 5.00 on this Friday only.
EUR 5.00? Wait a second, did I not see a special offer on a German website during the week? I did indeed and the 200g box was EUR 2.49. Wow 100% price difference!? This is totally mad! Is is St. Valentine? Actually it isn’t! For some unexplainable reason Ferrero Rocher are outrageously expensive in Ireland. Why?!?
