Hi all!
Christmas Markets everywhere and because there are sooo many and it is difficult to keep an overview, I have put a very simple website together, that lists all Christmas Markets. Check out www.dublinchristmasmarkets.com The website is nothing special and it is not finished yet, but if I don’t tell you about it now, then Christmas will be over. ;-) So, use it if it helps and if you are not that much into Christmas Markets, then just tell a few other people about it.
[ad]
If I get a chance I will add some pictures and some more details about the different markets, so check back regularly. At the moment it is just a list of all the Christmas Markets in Dublin. If you know of any other markets drop me a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will add the other markets.
What else is there to say this week? Oh, yes. if you buy Christmas presents from Amazon or want to buy books, check also the prices on Book Depository (free delivery to Ireland or anywhere else is included!) I have advertisement from both Amazon and Bookdepository in the Dublin Event Guide here and in the Dublin News section there are links to a few more companies that you might use to buy Christmas presents. If you use the links here in the Dublin Event Guide, the companies will pay approx. 5% of the product value as an advertisement fee. So by using the links here, you help the Dublin Event Guide. Please use them often! :-)
And now these little reminders. Thanks for reading, they are important!
Remember everytime you discover something new through the Dublin Event Guide, tell your friends, colleagues and families about it. Tell them about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and keep spreading the word about this weekly publication! Tell the people you meet about it and suggest to them to subscribe too. They can do that easily on the right hand side at www.dublineventguide.com and they can also LIKE the Dublin Event Guide at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide
I know some find the next paragraph a little annoying, but not a cent of the donations is for me. It is all used to cover the bills that I get for sending this weekly newsletter…. and if you want more detail, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will answer all your questions.
Sending the Dublin Event Guide bills costs EUR 170 every month and I need to find that every single month. I happily give the time and the work, but I need your help with the cost. A contribution of EUR 1 per month from you would be great if you enjoy the Dublin Event Guide. You can either choose to subscribe (EUR 12 per year) or you can contribute with a once-off sum here: www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm Every cent will be used for the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events).
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have a great weekend + week!

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
Nature is cruel, but also beautiful. Sometimes we focus only on one aspect of the two and we forget the other, but it is completely normal in nature that they are DIRECTLY next to each other. Today’s Feel Good slot video clip is from a nature programme and it is about a leopard who does his job (which can be seen as cruel), but then does something amazing and unexpected.
How is that inspirational, motivational or thought provoking, you ask? Have you heard the saying “A leopard can’t change its spots.”? It means that a person’s character, especially if it is bad, will not change, even if they pretend it has or – in other words – we can’t change our innate nature. What if even the said leopard can change its nature? Then we as human beings should be able to do so too, right?

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
Last week Mark G, Margaret W, Serena F and Mark R were the wonderful people who helped with a crucial donation! Thanks a lot, every cent counts! All the support is much needed. Do you want to be part of the “wonderful people list” as well? Just a small contribution and you will join the ranks of the much appreciated Dublin Event Guide supporters.
Your help is absolutely needed too to ensure that you and everyone else will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and your EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
If I have counted correctly, there are at least 9 Christmas Markets on this weekend and there will be 12 next weekend. Now the difference between the markets are huge, so don’t expect too much from many of them. The one that intrigues me most os the “Traditional Continental Christmas Market” at the RDS. I am hoping for a good market, but somehow expect to be disappointed.
Last year the best market was the Dockland’s Market, but this year they made significant changes again and the jury is out. I am afraid that at least on paper, it sounds like we are in for a big disappointment. Maybe one day someone will get a handle on Christmas Markets and do a good one. Until then, book a cheap flight for one of the December weekends and explore the markets elsewhere.
Where else should you go this week? Definitely the People’s Art exhibition! And if you have kids, look at the Farmleigh House Christmas programme as well.
I will be in St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Saturday evening where the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir (I am involved there) will sing at a fundraising event for the Peter McVery trust. A very good and worthwile charity. Mary Black will also perform. Tickets are still available as far as I know, maybe because at EUR 30, they are a little steep despite the very good cause.

SHIFT – 80s Tribute Gig – Christmas Show & Die Hard Screening
Thurs 19 Dec: 20:30
Sugar Club, 8 Lower Leeson Street, Dublin 2
The 80s tribute band SHIFT are inviting you to their Christmas Show. They will open the evening with the screening of the Christmas Classic movie “Die Hard” and then perform an extra special festive 80s rock gig.
They asked me to tell you:
“Come all ye faithful to The Sugar Club on 19 Dec and bear witness to Die Hard: John McClane’s epic 50 story high adventure in the Nakatomi Plaza. – As if that wasn’t enough, SHIFT will then cap the night off with their one of a kind, extra festive 80s rock tribute spectacle.
Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, except… five 80s rock legends bringing you the best Christmas party of your lives!”
Tickets can be bought online here and they are EUR 10 if you book online and come in costume (some festive attire e.g. Santa Hat or Christmas Jumper) or EUR 12 at the door on the night! The film starts at 21:00 and Shift will be on stage close to midnight and they will bring you back to a proper stadium gig in the 80s. Find out more at www.gettheshift.com and www.facebook.com/gettheshift
SHIFT generously made 5 pairs of tickets available for a competition. If you want to win a pair of tickets and get transported back to the 80s or experience the 80s for the first time, send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the subject SHIFT2. Make sure that you put your full name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail and your mail has to be with me by 13:00 on Monday 16 December.

Promote your product or (non-free) event with a competition in the Dublin Event Guide!
The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) focuses on free events, but we all fully understand that not everything can be free in life and if you run a non-free event (or sell a cool product), I am sure it would help you if you could let the 19,000+ Dublin Event Guide readers know about your event or product. If you can make a few tickets (product samples) available for the Dublin Event Guide readers, I can help you and promote your event (product) in the context of a competition. Cost to you? In most cases not a cent! Just contact me on dublineventguide@gmail.com and we can discuss the details. It is all very simple! ;-)

Giving money for free!?
Do you happily receive the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) every week? And do you make use of it at least sometimes? And would you like to help to keep it going? If you read this, then the answer is probably three times YES!
But I understand that giving a donation is not everybody’s thing. I can assure you that it will only be used to cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide, but wouldn’t it be even neater if you could give money without having to use your own?
This is indeed possible! When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
www.bookdepository.co.uk?a_aid=dubevg for Book Depository and
www.amazon.co.uk/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1634&creative=6738&linkCode=ur2&tag=dubeveguiforf-21 for Amazon
You can also copy these links and send them to your friends. When you click on the link you books cost exactly the same as if you went to the Amazon or Book Depository website directly. But if you go via my links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8%. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it still would amount to a fair amount.
And if you want to buy from
Groupon use this www.awin1.com/cread.php?s=344250&v=4345&q=162396&r=140544 or for
LivingSocial use this www.awin1.com/awclick.php?mid=4319&id=140544
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) Thanks!

Dublin Christmas Markets website launched
Over a few days I have quickly and simply created a website that currently holds a list of all Christmas Markets in Dublin and – if I have time – over the next few days/weeks more information will be added. This year, the site might still be a little sparse, but hopefully next year it will be a great additional resource for the Christmas period. Have a look at www.DublinChristmasMarkets.com and feel free to tell your friends about it. ;-)

DARTs after midnight!? ..and Nitelink service
I think this is an absolute first: DARTs will run after midnight on some weekends before Christmas. It really shouldn’t be such a revolutionary development, but public transport is not typically user-focused.
On Fri 13, Sat 14 and Thurs 19, Fri 20 and Sat 21 Dec the late DART will serve all stations and will leave
from Pearse station to Howth at 00:30,
from Pearse Station to Malahide at 00:35 and
from Connolly Station to Bray at 00:30.
A late DART is probably for many better than NO DART, but the time seems a bit early to me. I can’t imagine that these DARTs will be packed.
If the Nitelink (bus) service is your mode of transport, you will find details here: www.theaa.ie/AA/AA-Roadwatch/Buses.aspx

If you took the opportunity and started a new business recently (not more than approx. 6 months ago) and need a bit of support to let Dublin know about your new venture, talk to me. In this section I will feature new companies every now and then. I had to give it a rest for a while due to some technical challenges, but I seem to have mastered them more or less by now. ;-)
|
Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

GloHealth Christmas Wonderland – Continental Christmas Market
10:00 – 22:00, Sat 07 Dec
RDS, Merrion Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4
The GloHealth Christmas Wonderland (06 Dec – 12 Jan) is this year’s winter event programme (including ice skating rink) at the RDS. There are lots of activities and for the first time Funderland already starts in December. The most interesting part for me is the Continental Christmas Market and you don’t have to pay to get access to it.
So to summarise that: At the RDS there is Funderland (already!), Santa Christmas Circus, iSkate on Ice, Jingle Town (Grotto), Guy Barrett – Illusionist and Custard Pie (Puppet Theatre) and all these shows or activities require tickets and cost money.
The final component is the traditional continental Christmas Market and admission is free to it.

Dublin Castle – “Traditional Festive Market”
11:00 – 17:00, Sat 07 Dec
Dublin Castle, Dame Street, Dublin 2
This is the official line: “Each Saturday and Sunday the upper courtyard of Dublin Castle is transformed into a traditional Christmas Market. “
But in reality there were just 5 stalls there last week and it is not even CLOSE to a Christmas Market. Pity! The Courtyard of Dublin Castle would be a PERFECT place for a wonderful Christmas Market, but you have to do better than that to give it a grand name. Unless they have more this week, I can’t recommend going to Dublin Castle for the market.
Choirs will be performing under the tree from 13:30-15:30.
On 15 Dec a craft fair will take place from 10:00 in Bedford Hall.

Grow your own….. – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 07 Dec
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
The newest Science Gallery exhibition (25 Oct – 19 Jan) is called GROW YOUR OWN…. and is exploring synthetic biology and life after nature. How does the future of designed and artificially enhanced life look like? What possibilities are there.
This exhibition is very different from the previous ILLUSION exhibition. GROW YOUR OWN is a lot more scientific and very futuristic. Maybe you could call it “science and art fiction”? The exhibition is full of interesting ideas and concepts, but also contains eye-brow raising stuff like human cheese and self-diagnosing excr ement. Younger children will be lost in it, so it is more suitable for a slightly older audience (16+) in comparison to the previous exhibition.
As with all Science Gallery exhibitions, I definitely recommend visiting it, but this time you have to bring a bit more time to comprehend all 21 exhibits and you need to bring your curiosity for science. It is worth it, though! The great (and unique) thing about the Science Gallery is that there are always mediators there, helpers that explain every exhibit in simple terms.
The exhibition is open Tuesday-Sunday. (Weekdays: 12:00-20:00, Sat+Sun: 12:00-18:00) Admission is free.

GloHealth Christmas Wonderland – Continental Christmas Market
10:00 – 22:00, Sun 08 Dec

Shutterbug Vintage Clothes Kilo Sale
12:00 – 19:00, Sun 08 Dec
Block B, 1/6 Haymarket, Smithfield, Dublin 7
A pre-Christmas Shutterbug Vintage Clothes Kilo Sale takes place in Smithfield and again a Kilo of clothes is just EUR 20. In addtion to the Kilo Sale, there are some other Pop-Up shops waiting for you: Folkster with new clothes (Sister Jane, Miista, UNIF, Folkster Edit and Jeffrey Campbell Shoes), Gild & Cage interiors store with gifts and homeware, Damn Fine Print hand screenprinted poster shop and DJ Conor Behan will be playing pop and r’n’b.
Great event for all vintage clothes enthusiasts! But there is a “but”! The “but” is, that at the time of writing on Friday morning already 3214 people have indicated on Facebook that they will attend. And with that in mind, the organisers of the sale have devised a queueing system with different zones that could remind you of XFactor auditions. At the last Kilo Sale some people had to wait for 2-3 hours and the smart aspect of the queueing system is that you get a ticket for your zone when you arrive (from 08:00) and can then leave again until around 11:30.
Check out the facebook event page, it explains everything.
Admission is free.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 08 Dec
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Science Gallery Mediator Talks

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
“Eight Easy Pieces: An Evening of Short Talks by Science Gallery Mediators” is a very promising event in the Science Gallery.
If you’ve ever visited a Science Gallery exhibition, then you’ll probably have spoken to the amazing mediators there. The mediators are a team of science fans and students who are knowledgable, patient and love telling you all the details about the exhibition that is running. And this week -for the first time ever – the mediators will present a series of short talks. They will not talk about the current exhibition, but about the science they like to read about and do in their spare time. It’s one hour of fast-paced talks… prepare to learn stuff!
Admission is free, but booking is required via the website below.

Man, Woman and Child Concerts
19:00, Wed 11 Dec
National Library, Kildare Street, Dublin 2
A series of four concerts of songs based on the child ballad collection will take place. Man, Woman and Child is a research and performance project devised and co-ordinated by Michael Fortune featuring traditional singers. The project is based on The Child Ballad Collection: a collection of traditional songs gathered by the American collector Francis J Child in England and Scotland between 1882 and 1898. Many of the songs, or variants of them, are sung in the Irish tradition. Approximately fifty songs will be performed over four nights along with a comprehensive talk on Child Ballads in Ireland by singer Jerry O’Reilly.
Hear two different singers perform each Wednesday (19:00) evening:
27 Nov: Luke Cheevers and Niamh Parsons.
04 Dec: John and Brigid Tunney
11 Dec: Mick Fowler and Rosie Stewart
18 Dec: Tim Lyons and Aileen Lambert
Thurs 19 Dec at 13:00: Jerry O’Reilly will give a talk on ‘The Early Classic Ballads in the Irish Song tradition’ including archival presentation and songs from the singers who performed at the concerts.
Free. All welcome. No booking required but come early to secure a seat.

GloHealth Christmas Wonderland – Continental Christmas Market
10:00 – 22:00, Thu 12 Dec

Dublin Docklands Christmas Festival
12:00 – 22:00, Thu 12 Dec
George’s Dock, IFSC, Dublin 1
The Dublin Docklands Christmas Festival is with 8 years, the longest established Christmas Market in Dublin, but compare that to the oldest Christmas Market in Germany (in Nuremberg), which is running 374 years now! The Irish Markets are still just tiny babies and a lot of learning and growing up could still be done.
The Dublin Docklands Christmas Festival will run from 12-23 Dec. It was in the past one of the better ones in layout and in the type of stalls/traders there are, but every year the organisers fiddle around with it. Maybe one day they will hit gold. In previous years there was a nice atmosphere and there were even some crafts shops intermixed with soap, flashy T-shirt and plastic goods shops.
11 food stalls and 27 shops stalls (only a small few you can call “craft”) are there this year, but it seems that the layout has been changed completely and the George’s Dock platform is used for a gig marquee this year, called “Festival Lounge”. Until 18:00 you are allowed in for free and some choirs will perform occassionally. In the evening, however, from 20:00-22:00, it will turn into a gig venue and tickets are EUR 8-10. VERY strange for a Christmas Market! So the jury is out about the market this year. We will know more next weekend.
The market will be open every day Mon-Fri 12:00-22:00 and Sat+Sun 10:00-22:00.

Light up for Dublin Simon Community
18:00, Thu 12 Dec
Powerscourt Centre, 59 South William Street, Dublin 2
A fundraising event for the Dublin Simon Community will take place at the Powerscourt Town House, which will be illuminated with a Light projection show on Thursday. You are asked to come in Christmas jumpers and you are also asked to light them up somehow (safely!).
Actress and Children’s author Pauline McLynn, Television presenter Stephen Byrne, Irish Times journalist Roisín Ingle and Retailer Louis Copeland will design their own Christmas jumper creations, but I am not sure if there is any help for “normal” people.
Entertainment provided is – apart from the Light projection show – a performance from the cast of Annie, by Melaine McCabe and The Lucan Gospel Choir. There will be mulled wine, minced pies and special Christmas shopping stalls.
Admission is free and more details are on the Facebook Page below.

Dame District Christmas Market
12:00 – 23:00, Fri 13 Dec
Dame Court, Dublin 2
The Dame District Christmas Market will take place every day from Fri 13 – Sun 22 Dec. The market is a row of 24 white plastic tents/marquees down Dame Court with a few lights and a few pine branches for decoraton. Yes, you get it: atmosphere is a problem. But the tents are relatively big so that stalls are of a nice size and there are some interesting traders. Admission is free.
The best about this market is that there will be a free concert every night on the stage and it seems (unconfirmed!) that performers are Hazey Noisy Lake, Bob Gallagher, Nella Dwyer and Alan Star.
Unfortuantely I wasn’t able to find a schedule yet with start times etc for the music performances on the stage.

Pizza&champagne – works by Dope & Sinead Bailey Kelly
20:00 – 23:00, Fri 13 Dec
Moxie Studios, Pembroke Row, Lad Lane, Dublin 2
“Pizza & champagne” – A collection of works by Dope & Sinead Bailey Kelly is an exhibition that takes place on Friday evening.
Pizza & Champagne is an odd combination of culinary tastes and a contradiction in styles, but why not! If you like it, enjoy it the way you want it. This translates into art. The exhibition will dismantle ideals of artistic exclusivity because art is not made by artists, but is made by people. This show will bring you art made by people for people.
Dope’s work is bold, mixing up loud colors, textures, patterns and playing with experimental typography.
Sinead Bailey Kelly’s work is a collection of majestic creatures; she paints friends, faces of inspiration and soul mates in watercolors. Music will be provided by Frank B and by Together Disco at the after-party.
Admission is free. The event is not yet on the Facebook Page below, but I am sure it will be added soon.

Did Nelson Mandela really die on Thursday?
On Thursday 05 Dec, it was announced by the South African Jacob Zuma that Nelson Mandela had died peacefully in his Johannesburg home. Nelson Mandela, was an anti-apartheid activist who was imprisoned for 27 years, was instrumental to the removal of apartheid in South Africa and was South Africa’s president from 1994-1999. He was 95 years when he died and is a hugely respected and admired personality.
But did he really die on Thursday? Let’s say he died “officially” on Thursday, because months ago, I found an article about his death and about the lies the current South African president was telling about Mandela. According to that article Mandela died on 25 June 2013, but was kept alive by machines until now for political reasons. The interesting article is here.
Sad, that even when the time was up dishonesty and deception interfered with his peaceful departure.

If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
