Hi all!
I have a new Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) for you! :-) And it is full with Christmas Markets. I didn’t count them, but it will be a BUSY December with all the markets everywhere. For people that are a little less Christmassy in their feeling and thinking, there are plenty of other events, but it does get quite difficult in December. Christmas is like a massive steamroller that flattens anything that tries to put up any resistance.
[ad]
Talking about resistance: I get many e-mails. Most are about events, but sometimes people have good suggestions or ideas. Scott P sent me some ideas last week and it was really good stuff. But occassionally I get e-mails from Dublin Event Guide subscribers that surprise me a little. With more than 19,000 subscribers it is impossible to please everybody to 100%, but it seems there are a good few people that are quite ok with the Dublin Event Guide. Last week I got a mail from someone who was absolutely not ok with it. ;-) In that case it would be best to part ways, but oddly that person wanted to convince me that I was doing it wrong. :-D
And now these little reminders. Thanks for reading, they are important!
Remember everytime you discover something new through the Dublin Event Guide, tell your friends, colleagues and families about it. Tell them about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and keep spreading the word about this weekly publication! Tell the people you meet about it and suggest to them to subscribe too. They can do that easily on the right hand side at www.dublineventguide.com and they can also LIKE the Dublin Event Guide at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide
Sending the Dublin Event Guide bills costs EUR 170 every month and I need to find that every single month. I happily give the time and the work, but I need your help with the cost. A contribution of EUR 1 per month from you would be great if you enjoy the Dublin Event Guide. You can either choose to subscribe (EUR 12 per year) or you can contribute with a once-off sum here: www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm Every cent will be used for the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events).
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have a great weekend + week!

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
“Take a seat + Make a friend” is the experiment that Soulpancake carried out. Two strangers were put in a ball pit (that’s a box full of plastic balls) and had a chat. An amazing outcome and I love the idea behind it. Have a look at this video clip and smile. www.youtube.com/watch?v=HfHV4-N2LxQ

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
Last week Stephen H, Karen H and Nikki D were the wonderful people who helped with a crucial donation! Thanks a lot, every cent counts! All the support is much needed. Do you want to be part of the “wonderful people list” as well? Just a small contribution and you will join the ranks of the much appreciated Dublin Event Guide supporters.
Your help is absolutely needed too to ensure that you and everyone else will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and your EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
There are Christmas Markets everywhere! This week at Merrion Square, Dublin Castle, National Print Museum, Dun Laoghaire, Filmbase, Alliance Francaise, Clontarf, Aras Chronain and that is just the start!! I will definitely go to Merrion Square and if possible to Film Base and Alliance Francaise. Most of the rest will be still around nest week. We have to pace ourselves a little. ;-)
On Sunday is also a very interesting “Just Grow it – Upcycling event”.
Then there is an Alchemist Cafe this week and from Thursday the “Made in Israel”- Film Festival takes place with about 18 free film screenings.

Whelan’s, Wexford Street, Dublin 2
Folk and jazz singer Mary Coughlan and her band will perform a gig in aid of the Sophia Housing Association on Wed in Whelan’s. Special guests are The Young Folk, who have released their debut album ‘The Little Battle’recently. This will be Mary Coughlan’s first gig in Whelan’s for a very long time and The Young Folk’s last gig in Dublin this year.
Sophia Housing Association ( www.sophia.ie ) works with people who, for any number of reasons, find themselves out of their own home and work with individuals and families to help them acquire the skills to deal with everyday issues that may have caused them to be homeless in the first place. The fundraiser will enable Sophia to continue their support for people at risk of homelessness.
Advance tickets are EUR 15 (+ booking fee) available from www.wavtickets.ie or 1890 200 078, or EUR 20 at the door on the night.
The Sophia Housing Association has made 2 pairs of tickets available for a competition in the Dublin Event Guide and the winners were Majella Moloney and Jennifer Murray. Congratulations!

Promote your product or (non-free) event with a competition in the Dublin Event Guide!
The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) focuses on free events, but we all fully understand that not everything can be free in life and if you run a non-free event (or sell a cool product), I am sure it would help you if you could let the 19,000+ Dublin Event Guide readers know about your event or product. If you can make a few tickets (product samples) available for the Dublin Event Guide readers, I can help you and promote your event (product) in the context of a competition. Cost to you? In most cases not a cent! Just contact me on dublineventguide@gmail.com and we can discuss the details. It is all very simple! ;-)

Giving money for free!?
Do you happily receive the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) every week? And do you make use of it at least sometimes? And would you like to help to keep it going? If you read this, then the answer is probably three times YES!
But I understand that giving a donation is not everybody’s thing. I can assure you that it will only be used to cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide, but wouldn’t it be even neater if you could give money without having to use your own?
This is indeed possible! When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
www.bookdepository.co.uk?a_aid=dubevg for Book Depository and
www.amazon.co.uk/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1634&creative=6738&linkCode=ur2&tag=dubeveguiforf-21 for Amazon
You can also copy these links and send them to your friends. When you click on the link you books cost exactly the same as if you went to the Amazon or Book Depository website directly. But if you go via my links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8%. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it still would amount to a fair amount.
And if you want to buy from
Groupon use this www.awin1.com/cread.php?s=344250&v=4345&q=162396&r=140544 or for
LivingSocial use this www.awin1.com/awclick.php?mid=4319&id=140544
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) Thanks!

Trade School Dublin
If you visited the Granby Park Project a few months ago, you might have heard about it: There is a new and interesting alternative learning community in Dublin that uses barter (the exchange of goods or services instead of the excahnge of money) to reward the teacher. It means that anyone can teach a class and students sign up and agree to meet the barter requirement of the teacher.
The Trade School is run by volunteers and it was introduced as part of the Granby Park project. ANd since it worked well, it is now going into the next stage. Past classes were about Storytelling, Arts, Capoeira, Photography, Music, Yoga, CV Writing, Journalism, Electronics and lots more. Payment could be anything but not money. It could be just a round of applause, or food or books, or a surprise.
A very interesting concept and while the current “school term” has come to an end, if you are interested (as a student or as a teacher), you should keep an eye on this and get in contact with the people who run it on their website or Facebook Page. More classes are planned in January!

Don’t buy Gift Vouchers for Christmas!
Another big shop chain is in deep trouble: A-Wear will close some and might have to close all of their shops permanently and nearly 360 jobs are at serious risk after the company went into receivership on Thursday.
Xtra-vision has created a new massive amount of disgruntled customers when they initially wanted to force them to buy a Xbox game before they could receive their reserved and already paid for new Xbox. They backtracked and removed that requirements, but lots of annoyed customers is not good for a company that is just recovering from more serious trouble.
These are only two examples, but we have NO idea who could be in trouble tomorrow or in 4 or 6 weeks. For that reason (and because I experienced a close miss when HMV closed down), I strongly recommend that you do NOT buy gift vouchers from shops as Christmas presents. Give money if you don’t know what to buy and stay away from all shop issued gift vouchers.
(Disclaimer: I am not a financial advisor and am not certified by the Central Bank, so I might talk rubbish, but you what I mean, don’t you?)

Public Transport Guides – Sooo many of them!
The National Transport Authority is a state body that is in charge of public transport in Ireland. They have a website called “Transport for Ireland“, which contains travel/journey planners and also provides a whole range of smartphone apps: a Journey Planner, a Cycle Planner and the Real Time Ireland app that integrates all real time arrival information services from Dublin Bus, Bus Éireann, DART, Iarnród Éireann and Luas.
In addition, Google announced on Wednesday, that they launched their Google Transit service in Ireland, which is “for the first time allowing Irish users of its [Google’s] maps to get directions using public transport.” ..and the National Transport Authority was involved in that as well. The service incorporates Dublin Bus, Luas, Bus Éireann and Irish Rail, as well as all commercial bus operators.
Is that not what Transport Ireland already had done before? junior Minister Alan Kelly said “Commuters and travellers across the Republic of Ireland are now able to use Google Maps on the web, on their Android phones, iPhones or tablets to plan their public transport journeys.” Sounds like the journey planner re-invented?
And what about “Hit the Road”? They seemingly do that already since 2010 at www.hittheroad.ie/
Would it maybe make sense to build one amazing, all-delivering, super-duper service instead of having lots of them?

If you took the opportunity and started a new business recently (not more than approx. 6 months ago) and need a bit of support to let Dublin know about your new venture, talk to me. In this section I will feature new companies every now and then. I had to give it a rest for a while due to some technical challenges, but I seem to have mastered them more or less by now. ;-)

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Each Saturday and Sunday the upper courtyard of Dublin Castle is transformed into a traditional Christmas market. Choirs will be performing under the tree from 13:30-15:30.

Grow your own….. – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 30 Nov
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
The newest Science Gallery exhibition (25 Oct – 19 Jan) is called GROW YOUR OWN…. and is exploring synthetic biology and life after nature. How does the future of designed and artificially enhanced life look like? What possibilities are there.
This exhibition is very different from the previous ILLUSION exhibition. GROW YOUR OWN is a lot more scientific and very futuristic. Maybe you could call it “science and art fiction”? The exhibition is full of interesting ideas and concepts, but also contains eye-brow raising stuff like human cheese and self-diagnosing excr ement. Younger children will be lost in it, so it is more suitable for a slightly older audience (16+) in comparison to the previous exhibition.
I was at the Science Gallery for the media preview and the launch event (for all Science Gallery members) and I found it so interesting that I will be back again. As with all Science Gallery exhibitions, I definitely recommend visiting it, but this time you have to bring a bit more time to comprehend all 21 exhibits and you need to bring your curiosity for science. It is worth it, though! The great (and unique) thing about the Science Gallery is that there are always mediators there, helpers that explain every exhibit in simple terms.
The exhibition is open Tuesday-Sunday. (Weekdays: 12:00-20:00, Sat+Sun: 12:00-18:00) Admission is free.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 01 Dec
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Conrad has an insatiable appetite for plants; he is an obsessive plant collector, searching out both the rare and the unusual to add a touch of the tropics to his small garden on the north coast. Harnessing the Power of Collective Creativity
09:00 – 17:30, Fri 06 Dec
Dublin Civic Offices, Wood Quay, Dublin 2
The exhibition “Expanded Territories” will come to the Atrium of the Dublin City Civic Offices. It will be open on Friday 06 Dec and then from Mon 09- Fri 13 Dec.
I tried my best to understand what it is about, but I had difficulties! It seems that the idea is to bring artists and businesses in Leitrim, Fermanagh and Tyrone together to encourage the creation of new ideas for products through the collaboration between the creative and the business people. The project is EU funded and the sizeable amount of EUR 800,000 was put in it over a 36 month period and it will continue to run until May 2015.
I would have liked to understand what the output/result of it is. Is it products? Art? Anything specific? But the website is udner construction, the Facebook Page doesn’t explain much and the Press Release didn’t satisfy my curiosity. So, maybe you have to go to the Civic Offices to understand it for yourself.

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)
Excessive Salaries in Ireland
On 25 Nov the newspapers printed a story that said that the most senior advisor to the Irish President left her job after only 18 months of a 36 month contract because she had enough of working with him. A few days later she relased a statement that said there was no tension with Michael D. Higgins, instead she wanted to “pursue other interests“.
Credible? Wellllll, not that much due to the short period she worked with Higgins, but it is possible. Importantly, though, it doesn’t really matter. Things like that happen in every job. People are frustrated about something and leave. No big issue.
But there is another aspect to it. It emerged that to employ her Higgins got the pay cap lifted, so that he can pay her EUR 103,000. That is a MASSIVE amount for a job with no serious responsibility and no real impact.
When people leave jobs, to “pursue other interests” that usually means that the next job pays the same or more than the old one. And where did she go? Ohhhh, she went to the charity Goal? So a charity is prepared to possibly pay more or the same as the presidential “palace”?
And GOAL seriously thinks that we are then still happy to donate in huge amounts? I accept that they have to pay a decent salary to get good manager, but in my opinion there are lots of really good people that would do a brilliant job for a LOT less than 100k. Dear GOAL, I will remember this story when I see your collection boxes from now on.
