Hi all!
Here we are again! Another new week ahead of us. Another Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) in your virtual hands and again it is late. Maybe I will have to redefine “late” and definie a midnight arrival as “normal”, then I will be less stressed when I compile it. This week it looked as if hardly any events would be in it. But in the end I still accumulated more than 170 events! :-o
[ad]
Open House is the main event this week, but Open House is not what it once was. I am so glad that I saw the Busaras, the Department of Foreign Affairs, Liberty Hall and the Criminal Court of Justice at previous Open House events. They are all not on the list anymore. Pity! But I still found a whole list of buildings that I want to see. Busaras was the most interesting two years ago: Most people think it is an ugly building but when you look behind the scenes and hear why it was built like that and what the architects considered, it suddenly gives life to that building. Same for Liberty Hall! If you knew the idea and intention you couldn’t call the building ugly! But, hey, I am just teasing here. Go to a few buildings even if you are not normally into architecture!
And everytime you discover something new through the Dublin Event Guide, tell your friends, colleagues and families about it. Tell them about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and keep spreading the word about this weekly publication! Tell the people you meet about it and suggest to them to subscribe too. They can do that easily on the right hand side at www.dublineventguide.com and they can also LIKE the Dublin Event Guide at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide
And also remember that sending the Dublin Event Guide bills are EUR 170 every month and I need to find that every single month. A contribution of EUR 1 per month from you would be great if you enjoy the Dublin Event Guide. You can either choose to subscribe (EUR 12 per year) or you can contribute with a once-off sum here: www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm Every cent will be used for the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events).
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have a great weekend + week!

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
This week’s Feel Good message is very short but – for some – it might be quite punchy:
There is always, always, always something to be thankful for!
What are you thankful for today?
If you can’t find something look for something smaller. And if you absolutely can’t find anything, feel free to ask for help, You can reach me via dublineventguide@gmail.com with the subject THANKFUL

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
Last week Caitriona L and Brian O’Connor were the great people who helped with a crucial donation! Thanks a lot! All the support is much needed. Do you want to be part of the “wonderful people list” as well? Just a small contribution and you will join the ranks of the much appreciated Dublin Event Guide supporters.
Your help is absolutely needed too to ensure that you and everyone else will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and your EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This week he main event is Open House. Unfortunately not as good as in previous years, but I guarantee you that you will discover new aspects of buildings/architecture/structure and purpose if you take part and visit some of the buildings.
On Saturday night, the Nuit Blanche (from 23:00) is a definitely something different and worth going. I went to the first one and ot was really great.
This weekend is the last opportunity to go to the Oktoberfest if that interests you. I went last week and had my once-yearly Schweinshaxen. Yummy! :-) I also went to Sculpture in Context last week and it is definitely worth a visit. The Botanic Garden is even without the sculptures, but the art in the park makes it even more interesting.
A really interesting lecture on Saturday evening (unusual!) about travelling to Mars on a one-way ticket. The Circus Workshop on Sunday sounds like fun. I won’t be able to go, but I really would like to try something like that. Another interesting lecture: On Tuesday about the Black Death in Medieval Dublin.
Lots more taking place. Have a browse!

A unique, once-off and very interesting event will take place on Saturday and the organisers were very generous.
A funky fusion of b-boying world champion, Jinjo Crew, with Korean and Irish traditional music ensembles will be performed. and this music and dance from completely different origins (Korea+Ireland) and genres (street dance+traditional music) will come together in unexpected harmony and fun to celebrate the multicultural melting pot that Dublin is.

Promote your product or (non-free) event with a competition in the Dublin Event Guide!
The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) focuses on free events, but we all fully understand that not everything can be free in life and if you run a non-free event (or sell a cool product), I am sure it would help you if you could let the 17,000+ Dublin Event Guide readers know about your event or product. If you can make a few tickets (product samples) available for the Dublin Event Guide readers, I can help you and promote your event (product) in the context of a competition. Cost to you? Irish Museum of Modern Art will re-open
Many probably doubted that they would live long enough to see the re-opening of the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA). ;-) It closed on 01 November 2011 and next week, nearly two years later, it will re-open. That’s great news and to celebrate it, there is a weekend of events planned. Most events require advance booking, so check out the planned events here www.imma.ie/en/nav_42.htm There are artist talks, family events, even a tea dance on Sunday. However, I expect that nearly all events (the ones that require booking) will book out completely, do check the event programme soon.

Children’s Book Festival
For the whole month of October the 23rd CBI Children’s Book Festival will take place. Libraries, schools and bookshops across the country will host events with Irish and international children’s writers and illustrators. The 2012 festival reached more than 50,000 young readers across Ireland through more than 1,000.
This year’s international authors Conrad Mason (The Demon’s Watch), Joseph Delaney (the Spooks series) and Andrew Lane (Young Sherlock Holmes series) will come to Ireland and together with Irish authors and illustrators including Alan Early (Father of Lies Chronicles), Brian Gallagher (Across the Divide) and Claire Hennessy (Dear Diary) they will be meeting children at theatres, arts venues and libraries nationwide.
The list of events is much to long to include all events in the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events), so if you have children make sure you check www.childrensbooksireland.ie/childrens-book-festival/ for all relevant information.

If you took the opportunity and started a new business recently (not more than approx. 6 months ago) and need a bit of support to let Dublin know about your new venture, talk to me. In this section I will feature new companies every now and then. I had to give it a rest for a while due to some technical challenges, but I seem to have mastered them more or less by now. ;-)

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Scultpure in Context
09:00 – 18:00, Sat 05 Oct
National Botanic Gardens, Botanic Road, Glasnevin, Dublin 9
“Sculpture in Context” is a brilliant idea and concept: It is Ireland’s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition were beautiful sculptures from talented artists are perfectly integrated in the amazing Botanic Garden.
“The gardens are not only a botanical haven, and a quiet oasis on the outskirts of a modern European City; they also provide a challenging venue that gives the artist the rare opportunity of realising large-scale work. The sculptures will be displayed throughout the gardens, ponds, Great Palm House, and Curvilinear Range, with the smaller works exhibited in the gallery above the Visitor Centre. On Saturdays throughout the exhibition, you will have a rare opportunity to join the artists for a guided tour throughout the exhibition. “
Admission is free and th exhibition will run until 18 October. I was there last Sunday and really enjoyed it. You can do it Treasure Hunt-style: Don’t get the map but try to find all 150 (!) sculptures. It’s fun especially if you have some children with you (even that Inner Child will do!)

Open House Dublin
10:00 – 17:00, Sat 05 Oct
Dublin (various locations)
Open House Dublin is the biggest celebration of architecture in Ireland presented by the Irish Architecture Foundation. Open House Dublin 2013 will take place from 04-06 October. Over one weekend, almost 100 buildings of all types and periods will open up their doors to allow you to explore the architecture of our city. Special tours are provided by hundreds of professionals and enthusiasts and all is completely free. At popular locations the queues can be quite long and the REALLY popular locations used a lottery system already weeks ago to allocate tickets.
57 of the buildings are in the City Centre and the rest is outside the immediate City Centre. Unfortunately a whole range of very popular buildings from previous years has disappeared from the list: Liberty Hall, Busaras, Department of Foreign Affairs, Criminal Court of Justice, even Mansion House. They are all regrettably gone!
A few recommendations? City Hall, GPO, Chocolate Factory, Department of Jobs and Enterprise and Marsh’s Library are good locations and if you want to go a bit further, I can definitely recommend the Commissioners of Irish Lights in Dun Laoghaire.
In comparison to previous years, it seems that the event has suffered and is by far not as attractive anymore as it once was. However, there are still a good few interesting buildings. So give it a go!
Some buildings open on Sat, others on Sun and othes again on both days. Check the list of particiapting buildings at the website below and plan your tours in advance.

Oktoberfest 2013

George’s Dock, IFSC, Dublin 1
Oktoberfest in Dublin takes place from 19 Sept – 06 Oct. It is a German Beer Festival with Erdinger Weissbräu Beer, lots of German Bavarian Food and authentic Bavarian music.
Opening hours are Sun-Wed 12:00-23:00 and Thurs-Sat: 12:00-00:30.
The Festival Tent is on the platform in George’s Dock and there are severe admission restrictions (quantity of people). With already huge but still growing popularity of the Oktoberfest, this means there will be long queues already from around 17:30. You can get beer and some food next to the CHQ building as well, so you don’t have to queue to get into the tent, but if that is what you want, you might need to pre-book.
Admission is free, but after 22:00 an somewhat strange wristband system kicks in whereby you have to buy a wristband for EUR 6 that gives you a EUR 5 food voucher. Allegedly licensing rules force them to do that.

Nuit Blanche – Art Night & Night Market
23:00, Sat 05 Oct
Moxie Studios, Pembroke Row, Lad Lane, Dublin 2
The first Nuit Blanche was a massive success and strictly speaking nobody should tell anybody about the event anymore because Moxie Studios was packed and I am not sure how many more would fit in. BUT it was such a great event that I want to tell you and everyone else.
Admission is free, but a donation of EUR 2 is expected and the money will go to the performers.
For this second event, Moxie Studios will be transformed into a multi-sensory playground. From 23:00 until the early pre-dawn hours you can enjoy this most curious evening of night time exploration, contemporary art, music, design, fashion, live art, live performance, food and frolics. There will also be “The Great Exchange” indoor market, which will have works and wares of inspiring stylists, fashion designers, graphic designers, artists and small businesses.
The concept for the evening is “Neon” so expect UV light life drawing from Dr Sketchy’s anti art school and live performance, imaginative light installation pieces and phantom performance. Mr Whippy Sound system will provide the canned music.
Have a read through the full description on the Facebook Events Page below and you will find that you can even come in fancy dress if you wish.

Scultpure in Context
09:00 – 18:00, Sun 06 Oct

10:00 – 17:00, Sun 06 Oct

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. Maths and the Céide Fields – Alchemist Cafe
19:30, Tue 08 Oct
Mercantile, 28 Dame Street, Dublin 2
After Saturday’s event, a second Alchemist Cafe takes place in the first half of this month.
“Maths and the Céide Field” with Seamus Caulfield, Retired Associate Professor of Archaeology (UCD)
The neolithic site at Céide Fields in County Mayo, Ireland, contains the oldest known stone-walled fields in the world, dating back more than 5000 years (older than the Egyptian pyramids and Stonehenge). The Céide Fields is a network of parallel stone enclosures with many of the walls running as far as two kilometers in length. Ten square kilometres of the site have been mapped. Patrick Caul?eld, a local schoolteacher, ?rst discovered the site during the 1930s. Patrick’s son, Seamus, grew up to be an archaeologist, and it was he who began the first true excavation of the Céide Fields in 1970. He will discuss the mathematics associated with the Céide Fields and open up a discussion about what it can teach us.
Admission is free and all are welcome.

Scultpure in Context
09:00 – 18:00, Fri 11 Oct
Admission is free and the exhibition will run until 18 October. I was there last Sunday and really enjoyed it. You can do it Treasure Hunt-style: Don’t get the map but try to find all 150 (!) sculptures. It’s fun especially if you have some children with you (even that Inner Child will do!)

Smoke-Free Ireland – and what about alcohol-free?
Minister for Health James Reilly has announced that he plans to make Ireland a tobacco-free country by 2025. www.rte.ie/news/2013/1003/478051-smoking/ That’s only 12 years away and a LOT has to happen until then.
Yes, Ireland was the first European country to make indoor smoking in public places illegal and that could just happen over night with the right laws, but what since? Interestingly, the smoking ban in Ireland did NOT have a significant impact on the number of smokers in Ireland. www.thejournal.ie/workplace-smoking-ban-1054096-Aug2013/ People still smoke nearly as much as before.
So what is the magic formula that will change all that in 12 years? Well, a long document was written and outlines about 60 measures to make Ireland tobacco-free. They all make sense, but nothing is earth shattering. The plan is to “denormalise” the use of tobacco but not to make it illegal. So that’s a different approach than the none for other illegal substances and that is good, but will the softer approach really do the job?
I think it is a step in the right direction and I’d say (apart from cigarette companies) everybody benefits from it. But the odd thing is that seemingly there are absolutely no plans for an alcohol-free Ireland. Isn’t the effect of alcohol on our health system even more severe? I propose – in line with the smoking ban – a first step of making alcohol illegal in all work places. ;-) Imagine: an alcohol-free pub!

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
