Hi all!
Eventful weeks at the Dublin Event Guide HQ (i.e. my desk :-) )!
[ad]
On 21 July we reached the milestone of 15,000 Facebook Likes, which was a great achievement! But within days and – with the help of the great Rami J who likes the Dublin Event Guide and was prepared to help BIG – we increased that number so significantly that today we have more than 19,500 Likes!! That is 4500 additional Likes in 10 days! Amazing what is possible if the right people come together!
With so many new Likes, you can expect a big increase in subscribers to the e-mail magazine and this means that we have now arrived at 15,626 subscribers. Welcome to all new subscribers, it is great to have you here. :-)
With so many new people in our Dublin Event Guide Community, let me just repeat a few things about the Dublin Event Guide again:
1) All events listed here are free (unless otherwise clearly identified).
2) This mail is VERY long (I know!), but you are NOT meant to read all of it! Like with a newspaper, read the headline and if you are interested, read more. Otherwise just move on.
3) If your e-mail client shows pictures, you see nice date separations and section separations. If you don’t see pictures, switch them on! It is worth it!
4) There is no commercial company behind the Dublin Event Guide, instead I compile it every week in my spare time. Please consider that when you project you measure this e-mail magazine against your expectations or preferences.
5) You can always reach me on dublineventguide@gmail.com with event information or with your suggestions.
6) If you don’t like this information resource, don’t feel bad! ;-) It is impossible to please everyone. I hope that you enjoy it and make use of it and stay with us for a long long time, but if you feel you need to leave, there is an Unsubscribe link at the very bottom of the mail.
7) The Dublin Event Guide is completely free, but I need people – like Rami J – who support me. In particular I need your help to gather the money for the Dublin Event Guide bills. Every month I have to pay EUR 170 and your contribution to that is needed and VERY much appreciated. If you can help with a small contribution, this will ensure the further-existence of the Dublin Event Guide for everyone. The tiny amount of 25 cent per week (or EUR 12 per year) will be brilliant and you can donate at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm If you can contribute a little more or want to choose the subscription option (EUR 12 per year) I love you even more. ;-) If you currently are a little under pressure and therefore want to give a bit less for now, that’s much appreciated too! Thanks!!!
8) If you like this publication, tell the world! Get everyone to LIKE the Dublin Event Guide at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide and tell your friends and family that they should subscribe to the weekly e-mail at www.dublineventguide.com
9) If you are a Gmail user, you might have realised that Google has force-introduced new sub-Inboxes for you. There is a “Social” Inbox and a “Promotions” Inbox now in addition to the “Primary” Inbox. To get it back to the better way it was before, log in to your Gmail account and click on the “+” next to the Inbox tabs. Untick the “Social” and “Promotions” Inbox and you are back to the previous set up. If you leave the other Inboxes in place, the Dublin Event Guide will probably appear in promotions and it doesn’t belong there! If you “Star” this e-mail, it MIGHT from then on also bet back into your Primary Inbox, but there is no guarantee.
10) You can also help the Dublin Event Guide by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
11) I Know it would be better if this e-mail magazine arrived earlier in your Inbox and I am tryin to find a way. But please understand that I don’t make any money with it and therefore need to do my work on it in my spare time. So I am working every Thursday through the night (without sleep) and as soon as the newsletter is finished I am sending it to you. It takes me 24 hours to write it at the moment! I know that is slightly mad! But that is the reason why it is so late. I hope you understand.
Enough of introduction for today! Let’s get cracking with this week’s newsletter!
Enjoy cultural Dublin to the fullest,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
This week I selected a motivational video clip that I found. Take just 3 minutes, watch it and listen and allow yourself to be inspired or motivated: www.youtube.com/watch?v=psgjh9jFyMs

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
Last week Seamus C and Jenny M were the great people who helped with a crucial donation! Thanks a lot! All the support is much needed. Do you want to be part of the “wonderful people list” as well? Just a small contribution and you will join the ranks of the much appreciated Dublin Event Guide supporters.
Your help is absolutely needed too to ensure that you and everyone else will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and your EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This is an odd weekend I have to say! Because of the Bank Holiday weekend there are festivals and events taking place in nearly every little village throughout Ireland. 41 festivals!! Everywhere APART from Dublin! The August Bank Holiday weekend is usually the quietest summer months weekend, but this year it is even extremer because sooo much is happening elsewhere. It seems that Event Organisers in Dublin are afraid of the bank holiday exodus from the capital or maybe of the holiday season or they are afraid of Oxegen and Castlepalooza etc and therefore avoid running events when people might be away? I am not sure what it is!
Luckily, the good people of Bray are not afraid of it and with just a little southward travel we can partake in their great Bray Summer Fest. This week with a big closing Fireworks. And there is also the Northside Music Festival, which will start with an Urban Fleadh on Wolfe Tone Square on Sat and Sun. If I can find the time, I will also go to the Greystones Americana & Roots Festival. I have been there before and it is getting better and better. That’s four festivals already!
On Monday check out the North Face Climbing Wall outside Filmbase, you can learn how to climb if you are interested. And at some stage over the weekend, or in the coming weeks, check out the Sand Sculpture exhibition in Dublin Castle. It has been great in previous year and I expect no less!

Promote your product or (non-free) event with a competition in the Dublin Event Guide!
The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) focuses on free events, but we all fully understand that not everything can be free in life and if you run a non-free event (or sell a cool product), I am sure it would help you if you could let the 15,000+ Dublin Event Guide readers know about your event or product. If you can make a few tickets (product samples) available for the Dublin Event Guide readers, I can help you and promote your event (product) in the context of a competition. Cost to you? In most cases not a cent! Just contact me on dublineventguide@gmail.com and we can discuss the details. It is all very simple! ;-)

Novel Fair Competition – Call for Entries – Irish Writers’ Centre
The Irish Writers’ Centre is inviting all aspiring authors to submit their work to the third Novel Fair Competition. Following the huge success in the first two years, the Irish Writers’ Centre would love to set even more novelists on the path to publication. 6 book deals came out of previous Novel Fair Competitions!
Unpublished novelists are invited to submit up to 10,000 words of their manuscripts to be in with the chance to win this amazing prize. This year’s deadline is 16 October and twelve winners will go through to pitch their work at the Novel Fair on 22 February 2014.
The Novel Fair is an initiative by the Irish Writers’ Centre to introduce up-and-coming writers to top publishers and literary agents, giving novelists the opportunity to bypass the slush pile, pitch their ideas and place their synopsis and sample chapters directly into the hands of publishers and agents.
Find out more at www.writerscentre.ie/novelfair/ and at www.facebook.com/IrishWritersCentreNovelFair

If you took the opportunity and started a new business recently (not more than approx. 6 months ago) and need a bit of support to let Dublin know about your new venture, talk to me. In this section I will feature new companies every now and then. I had to give it a rest for a while due to some technical challenges, but I seem to have mastered them more or less by now. ;-)

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Sand Sculpture Exhibition
09:00 – 18:00, Sat 03 Aug
Dublin Castle, Dame Street, Dublin 2
This is a cool art installation! Every year for the last 11 years, a group of sculptors turns more than eighty tons of sand in a unique exhibition/installation outside in the Upper Courtyard of Dublin Castle.
This year’s theme for the sculptures is “The Bright Side” and will show what is good about Ireland and being Irish. Three big sand sculptures will be carved by the artists from Duthain Dealbh (Irish Sand Sculpture) from 29 July – 05 Aug and a fourth sculpture will be created from 10-14 Aug. The exhibition will run from 06-28 Aug and all will disappear on 29 Aug.
If you go to Dublin Castle over the weekend, you can still see the creation process and from Tuesday you can admire the end product. I have seen the Sand Sculpture Exhibition in previous years and definitely recommend a visit. Admission is free.

Yoga in Phoenix Park
11:00 – 12:00, Sat 03 Aug
Bandstand (behind the Tea Room, near the Zoo), Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
This will be the fourth year for “Yoga in the Park” and I think it is a brilliant initiative for a very worthy cause. From May until September, Fiona from www.twopalmsyoga.com and her team of teachers invite to an hour of Yoga in Phoenix Park every Saturday. No booking is required and you decide how much you give, the class is donation based.
All proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin. Just bring a mat or a towel, some water and (hopefully) even some sun protection to the class. Should the weather be bad, the bandstand will be shelter or even training location. The training is suitable for all levels, so even total beginners are very welcome.

The current Science Gallery exhibition “ILLUSION: Nothing is as it seems” will run from 12 July-29 Sept and is really interesting. Admission is free.

Sand Sculpture Exhibition
09:00 – 18:00, Sun 04 Aug

Pure Vintage Fair
11:00 – 17:30, Sun 04 Aug
Dublin Food Co-op, 12 Newmarket Square, Dublin 8
Normally the Pure Vintage Fair takes place on the 1st Sunday of the month, but surprisingly the Facebook Page for the fair doesn’t indicate anything yet. So, what should you do? Check the Facebook Page below before you go to Newmarket Square. If there is a clear announcement that the market will go ahead, all is good. If there is a cancellation all is clear too. If you do NOT find any notice, then you should assume that it is not taking place.
Normally I would write: The Pure Vintage Fair is what it says on the tin. A market/flea market for vintage items, which will take place on the first Sunday of every month. There will be vintage clothes, furniture, collectibles, jewellery and many more vintage items. Sounds interesting and with 30 stalls, it is well worth a visit. There will also be food, hot drinks and a DJ.

Dundrum Town Centre, Dundrum, Co. Dublin
Children can meet their animal friends in the “Pembroke Square” area of Dundrum Town Centre. Admission is free.
Check the website before you raise the hopes in your children. Dundrum Town Centre cancelled lots of events because of the totally incorrect “Severe weather warning” from Met Eireann. So it could easily happen that they cancel the Animal Farm event too.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 04 Aug
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Rock ‘n’ Roll Dublin Half Marathon
08:30 – 12:15, Mon 05 Aug
Dublin (various locations)
The Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon takes place on Monday and it is a 21 km long street party, according to the organisers. Participation is not free, but if there is a street party then even the audience should benefit nicely from it. But it starts inconveniently early for a street party! The Start Line is at St. Stephen’s Green and the Finish Line is at Earlsfort Terrace.
From the start line at the Harcourt Street end of St. Stephen’s Green, the race goes to Kevin Street, Patrick Street, passing by St. Patrick’s Cathedral, then Christ Church Cathedral onto the South Quays to Heuston Station. The next 7.5 km are in Phoenix Park, which it leaves at Islandbridge, then onwards to Chapelizod, then to fringes of Ballyfermot (Sarsfield Road), to Kilmainham, South Circular Road, through Rialto, Dolphins Barn, Portobello, Charlemont Street, Harcourt Terrace and then onto Earlsfort Terrace with a finish outside the Conrad Hotel. The stage for the gig at the Finish Line is at the Leeson Street corner of St. Stephen’s Green.
A number of bands will play along the course and some of the better known performers are Moo, Santoria, Jupiter Forest, Radio Friendlies, Elevation Falls and at the finish line, The Delorentos (11:00-12:00). Performance areas are about every mile in sometimes unexpected places and you should check the map at ie.competitor.com/dublin/course to find them.
8000 participants are expected by the organisers and rolling road closures will take place from 08:10 until 14:00 with earlier closures for the zones around the start and finish line.
If you like a bit of music in the morning, check the band list, but since there is no list available that identifies which band performs where, it all is a bit of a lucky dip apart from the Finish Line performance by The Delorentos.
I have to admit that I expected a bit more Street Carnival and crowd entertainment when I heard about this event a few months ago, but I keep forgetting that it is a race that is organised by a commercial organisation, so the focus might be on something else.
Participants have to collect their gear and for this there is an Expo that has free admission. You could still register for the race there if you want but you can imagine that it is not free (EUR 55). More information about the Expo in a separate entry on Sat + Sun.

Bank Holiday Monday
09:00, Mon 05 Aug
Dublin (various locations)
The August Bank Holiday Monday is typically a relatively quiet day as far as events are concerned. Nearly all shops are open as normal, but be aware that many museums and touristic sites are closed on Mondays (and that includes Bank Holidays). Some of the regular events are also affected by bank holidays. Some Monday events might not take place, but even some SUNDAY events could not take place or could be postponed to the Monday (as the last day of the weekend). Ideally you double check the events you want to go to to make sure that is is happening.
If you drive a car: Bus Lanes and Loading Bays and other day restricted “things” like cycling lanes do stick to the day and don’t care if it is a holiday or not. So don’t park or drive in a bus lane or on a cycling lane that is active on a Monday. The only exception: Pay & Display Parking is not enforced on bank holidays.

Sand Sculpture Exhibition
09:00 – 18:00, Mon 05 Aug

Temple Bar Night Market
18:00 – 22:30, Thu 08 Aug
Temple Bar, Dublin 2
The last (for now) Temple Bar Night Market will take place on Thursday. There will be arts and crafts (e.g. handmade soaps, candles, beadwork, fashion, upcycled arts & crafts and jewellery) on sale at a range of stalls.
It is a great idea to have a market like that. I know that some people were wondering if it is just a repeat of the Designer Mart that takes place on a Saturday. I didn’t make it to the Night Market yet and am therefore not sure, but there would not necessarily be anything wrong with that as it has to start somewhere and then grow. Other critique was that there are no food stalls, but I would say the Temple Bar traders would prefer if you came to their premises for food. ;-) So not having additional food stalls probably makes a lot of sense to them!?
Give it a go. It is the last market unless more will be scheduled soon and it can only get improved if people go to it….otherwise it will disappear again.

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs – Film Screening
19:30 – 21:30, Fri 09 Aug
Exchange Dublin, Upper Exchange Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2
Elevate Arts Production is a group of DCU MA in Multimedia students, who did a group dissertation and have developed a short film as part of it.
The short film creatively expresses the ideas and philosophies behind the Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Maslow believed that we all have the ability to transcend our emotional and psychological state to a higher level of being, but that we also have a set of needs that are arranged in five hierarchical stages (physiological, safety, love/belonging, esteem and self-actualization). Maslow’s ideas are very interesting if you are interested in the slightest in personal development and you can read more about it here.
Maslow’s theory will be interpreted in the short-film and expressed through the protagonist Laia, who travels through each
physiological and psychological stage within the film.
The film will be screened from 09-11 August in the Exchange all-day on a continual loop and the audience is encouraged to interact and assess the theory and maybe/hopefully reflect about it and develop an interest in personal growth.
The screening will start on Friday at 12:00 and in the evening from 19:30-21:00, the launch will take place.

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)
Vintner Federation – Idiotic beyond belief?
The Vintner’s Federation of Ireland represents the pubs in Ireland and understandably does lobby and fight on behalf of their members (the pubs) against or for anything that will bring them an advantage. No problem with that! We might not agree with many of the things they come up with (actually I NEVER agreed with them EVER), but they have a job to do.
However, unless they are on a remote island or unless they think people are too stupid to liste and read what ideas they come up with, you would expect that they go around on their toes, carefully nudging and lobbying in favour of their clients. Not so! The Vintner’s Federation is happy to annoy all their paying customer with their hairbrained ideas just for MAYBE a small advantage.
Or how else could you explain the idea of a “lid levy”? A lid levy means that if you go to an off-licence (Enemy No 1 for pubs) you have to pay a surcharge on the alcohol you buy. And this surcharge is then used to pay sports organisations the money that they lose when Sports Sponsorship by Alcol brands will be forbidden.
Wait! Did they just say: We won’t reduce the alcohol price in pubs despite the fact that the alcohol company doesn’t need some part of the money anymore for sponsorship. Instead we will keep that money now in our pocket and, you know what, why don’t you just pay more so that the poor sports clubs get some money from you.
I genuinely see a problem for sports clubs if sports sponsorhip by alcohol brands will be forbidden, but the Vintner’s idea must be the oddest and most idiotic idea of them all. Just The only intention is to come up with SOME justification for increasing the off-licence price and the Vintner’s don’t care how crazy the idea is they dream up. What an odd bunch! I’d say they need some PR consultant to help them with the “shooting your own foot” problem. www.thejournal.ie/lid-levy-alcohol-sponsorship-sports-1013466-Jul2013/

IF this is your first Dublin Event Guide for Free Events, I hope the huge amount of evens have not overwhelmed you too much. PLEASE do not try to read all, that is just not possible and definitely not necessary. Read this e-mail not like a normal e-mail (from top-to-bottom). Instead read it like a newspaper: Read the headline and if something grabs your attention read more, otherwise ignore it.

Have an event-full weekend and week,

You are receiving this newsletter because you have subscribed to it!!
If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
