“Dublin Tribal Spirit” is a weekly event that gives you the great experience of a drumming circle with african drums and authentic tribal rhythms. Tom and Sinead, who run that event are providing lots of drums for it and teach you the rhythms.

There is no formal admission charge for this event, but donations are expected. The organisers bring their own 20-30 drums to it every week, so they are looking for donations to keep the event going.

A weekly car boot sale, one of less than a handful that is still reliably taking place, has up to 200 cars/sellers. The stadium is just a few minutes walk from the Red LUAS line stop and numerous bus stops. For traders the Car Boot Sale opens at 06:30 for buyers from 08:00. The Dublin Food Co-op is open every Saturday at Newmarket for organic wholefoods and sustainable household products, plus over a dozen producer stalls offering organic fruit and veg., baked goods, dairy produce, wines, hot and cold food, etc. The Co-op is also open on Thursdays 12:00-20:00.

The weekly Honest2goodness food market in Glasnevin has fresh meat, vegetables, fish, baked goods, and wines. It is open from 09:30-16:00. It is behind Lidl in the Industrial Estate just after the Glasnevin Cemetary coming from the City Centre.

Parkrun Ireland is organising free weekly runs in parks. It is a timed run over 5km and participation is completely free, but registration before your first parkrun is required.

The SuperNatural Food Market is taking place every Saturday from 09:30-15:30 in St. Andrews Resource Centre in Pearse Street, Dublin 2.

The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is not a politic-free zone, but I tend to leave out the extreme positions (on left and right) and their events and the word “anarchist” indicates a rather extreme leaning in one particular direction. On the other hand, a bookfair can’t be that extreme by itself, but is it really a bookfair or is it a political event? I am not sure, but nevertheless I am exceptionally including this event…and I hear there will be book stalls.

Astronomy Ireland are continuing their weekly Sun Shows at the Astronomy Ireland Shop in Swords. Each Saturday, the staff of the Astronomy Ireland Shop will be showing you amazing views of our nearest star. Using special filters and some of the largest telescopes in Ireland you will get to see sunspots bigger than Earth and huge solar flare bursting from our nearest star. If it’s cloudy, there will be a telescope demonstration and you will find out how you can safely observe the Sun and undertake some daytime astronomy using your own telescope.

Every Sunday, the Merrion Square Open Air Art Gallery takes place. Up to 200 artists exhibit their paintings on the railings on three sides (West, North and East) of Merrion Square and you can just enjoy the exhibition or even buy.

The Children’s Art Cart Workshops will be held again in the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre (01-6770095) every Sunday from 24 March to 22 December 2013. Currently the workshop is still free, but there is a possibility that a fee will be introduced at some point. Children must be over 6 years of age and must be supervised by an adult.

The Japanese community and students groups from UCD and DCU celebrate the Hanami (Cherry Blossom) Festival this weekend at Farmleigh House. Hanami is an annual event in Japan where friends come together for outdoor parties to welcome spring and celebrate nature.

The Sundays at Noon Concert Series continues in the Sculpture Gallery at the Hugh Lane Gallery. Now in its 36th year, this series of free (mainly classical) concerts continues to present the best of Irish and International music and musicians. Concerts run from September to June. The next concert will feature Lynda Lee (soprano) and Alex Bernstein (piano). They will perform pieces from Hugo Wolf, Alban Berg and Xavier Montsalvatge.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Rogério from the Brazilian dance project “Forró de Lampião” in Dublin tells me: Forró de Lampião is Brazilian music that has the same roots as Samba and there is a whole culture that has developed around “forro”. “Rhythm Rocker at The Globe” is a weekly event on Sunday night in The Globe in Sth Great Georges Street, Dublin 2. It is a Rockabilly, R’n’R, Roots night with alternating (week by week) live bands Pavement Kings, Donna & The Sazzy Catz, The Mosquitoes and The Pacifics from 21:00 and with DJs from 23:00-01:30. The RDS continues its series of Rising Stars Music Recitals in the RDS Concert Hall with some of the most exciting young musical talent in Ireland today. The Spring 2013 Series features music from young Irish musicians from RIAM, CIT Cork School of Music and the DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama.

This Lunchtime Recital with Kiku Day is a Jinashi shakuhachi performance. Kiku Day is a shakuhachi player from Denmark with Japanese and American, background. She studied honkyoku, the repertoire of the shakuhachi playing komus monks of the Fuke sect of Zen Buddhism from the Edo period (1603–1867) with the master Okuda Atusya in Tokyo, Japan for 11 years.

Every Monday, starting on 25 February, the SCOOP Foundation will be hosting Jurassic Paradiso, a free Classic Cinema Night for the community. The event, which will be held at the Generator Hostel and will help raise money for The SCOOP Foundation, a locally based charity that helps support children out of poverty in Cambodia and India.

During the event, attendees can watch a classic blockbuster such as Back To The Future, Jurassic Park, Jaws, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Terminator 2, etc. The movie of the week will be voted on before hand on the Facebook page and there will also be featured themed nights.

Free popcorn will be available and low priced food and drinks can be provided by the Generator Hostel. After the movie there will be a brief movie discussion if you are interested and 2 hours of tunes focused around the movie, it’s genre, and the decade it was made.

The SCOOP (Supporting Children Out Of Poverty) Foundation is an innovative and dedicated charity and endeavors to raise funds through their own unique events and ideas to build schools and opportunities for children caught in the poverty trap in Cambodia and India.

The Comedy Crunch is a free Stand Up comedy event every Sunday and Monday. Every week different comedians entertain and on top of good comedy you will get free ice cream. Admission is free. The line-up can be found via the Comedy Crunch Facebook Page (see link below).

One of the events in next week’s Trinity Week (www.tcd.ie/trinityweek ) is the lecture “Irish Migration and American Cinema” by Prof Kevin Rockett (TCD). This lecture, with film extracts, will explore the representations of the Irish in American cinema from its beginnings to the present. Admission is free and all are welcome.

Choral+ is a recently created small vocal ensemble consisting of students, staff and graduate members of the University of Dublin Choral Society. Informal in nature, and with a wide repertoire, the group has performed at receptions and events both on and off campus. This evening they will present a short concert featuring works by composers such as Mozart, Bach and Sullivan. All welcome.

Part of the Dublin: One City, One Book series of events is “Dramatic readings from Strumpet City”. Be entertained as actor Fergus Cronin & historian Catriona Crowe evoke the atmosphere of the time and provide historical context through reading, recorded music and imagery.

To launch the 14th Franco-Irish Literary Festival, the IFI, in partnership with the Alliance Française and the French Embassy, will screen Anne Le Ny’s sensitive portrayal of grief and attraction “Ceux qui restent”.

This year’s festival theme is “Love & Hurt” and the film explores the relationship between Bertrand and Lorraine, played by Vincent Lindon and Emmanuelle Devos, who meet in hospital while visiting their respective partners both of whom are seriously ill.

The film will be introduced by Philippe Milloux, Director of the Alliance Française.

“Living abroad or sentiment in the mother tongue” is a lecture by Mexican writer Helen Blejerman.

When living far away from homeland, some words of our language provoke strong emotions of nostalgia, affection or closeness. Using psychological, philosophical and semantic concepts, the lecture will focus on maternal language spoken from abroad. Inspired by the project “Our Language Garden” the objective of the talk is to reflect on the emotional quality of words in the native tongue when living abroad, and also to reveal the possibilities of their use through technologies like “skype”. Helen Blejerman will reveal statistics, will ask the audience questions and tell stories.

Milk and Cookie Stories is a story telling event for for anyone who has a story to tell, or wants to hear a tale told well, in a relaxed, friendly environment – a place with tea, cushions, cookies and friends. Admission is free, everyone is welcome and stories of all kinds are welcome. Martin Incidentally by Gerry McDonnell is a novella in which the chapters can also be read as short stories in themselves. Gerry Mc Donnell’s book will be launched on the Opening Night of the Five Lamps Art Festival. The full programme is here. Admission tot he launch is free.

“The 1916 Rising and the Royal Barracks” is a museums tour with Museum curator Lar Joye. The walking tour will explore the site of the Royal Barracks (later Collins Barracks) within the grounds of what is now the National Museum of Ireland. The tour is suitable for adults.

Lorraine Galvin (soprano) and Trudi Carberry (piano) will perform a Lunchtime Recital in St. Ann’s Church. Admission is free and donations are welcome.

Where do Irish plants come from? Is an oak in Ireland the same as that in Britain? This lecture by Colin Kelleher will show how DNA is being used to solve the puzzles of some mysterious plant distributions by tracking their movement following the last glaciation. Admission is free.

The “Havana International Language Exchange” is taking place every Wed from 16:30-19:30 in Havana Tapas Bar in George’s Street. There are many Spanish speakers and English-speakers are explicitly invited, but everyone else is certainly very welcome too, to meet for a chat to improve your Spanish or English.

The FameLab Ireland Final, (also known as ‘The X Factor for scientists’) will see the top 10 newest voices from the world of science and engineering across Ireland deliver 3-minute pieces on bizarre and pertinent science concepts – anything from why men have nipp les to how 3D glasses work. The presentations will be judged by a panel of judges and the audience. The winner will then go on to represent Ireland at the international FameLab final at the Cheltenham Science Festival in June.

The Public lecture “Exploiting the enemy: what we can learn from the virus-host arms race” with Professor Andrew Bowie is provided by the School of Biochemistry & Immunology.

This lecture will reveal how knowledge of immune subversion by viruses is leading to new insights into how our immune system operates, knowledge which points to the development of new drugs to block immune and inflammatory diseases.

The King Kong Club is a weekly music game-show in the Mercantile. Each week 6-7 bands/solo artists play three songs each. At the end of all the performances a clap-off with the King Kong Club Clap-o-Meter takes place and the winner goes through to a semi-final and it all culminates after six months of competition with The Grand Final, held in front of a panel of celebrity judges.

The list of performers is not yet announced on their Facebook Page and I am not sure if it will be put up there, but check it anyway.

The Ferocious Mingle Marcade (Market and Arcade) place every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday it is a fancy dress market. It’s a flea-market type permanent market with stalls and “chalets” for traders. The Oscar Verne Café on site and (at least at the weekends) live music adds even more character.

The Lecture “Landscape – influences on Fabric and Fashion.” with Marie Staunton and Christopher Heavey will take place. Marie Staunton is a garden writer with a regular column in the Irish Independent. She also works in the fashion industry. Christopher Heavey is a well-known horticulturist and lecturer at the National Botanic Gardens College of Horticulture.

“The Dublin Lockout Cartoons of Ernest Kavanagh” with James Curry will take place. Admission is free and booking is not necessary. The event is part of the Dublin: One City, One Book series of events in April.

One of the world’s top crime novelists, Donna Leon, will be in conversation at Dubray Books in Grafton Street. Donna is the author of the bestselling Commissario Brunetti series of novels. She will be reading from her new novel The Golden Egg. Admission is free and everybody is welcome.

The Spanish Cultural Institute “Instituto Cervantes” presents a series of lectures that celebrates the historical connections between Ireland and Spain, as well as the wider Latin-American world, by exploring the shared cultural, political, economic, diplomatic and social experiences.

The series kicks off on 11 April with a joint presentation by Dr. Julio Crespo MacLennan (Ph.D. History, Oxford University) and Dr. Declan M. Downey (University College Dublin), with the title “Ireland and Spain in Search of a Common Past and Present: Current Trends of Research and Cooperation”.

The presentation looks at the latest research projects on shared historical experiences and present challenges in the centuries-old relationship between Ireland and Spain, and highlights new perspectives on the historical world-view of these societies.

‘Maureen O’Hara, Between Ireland and Hollywood’, a lecture by Prof Ruth Barton (TCD) as part of Trinity Week 2013. www.tcd.ie/trinityweek

Using clips from Maureen O’Hara’s films, this talk will consider how Maureen O’Hara played the feisty Irish colleen not just in The Quiet Man but across a range of Hollywood productions. Admission is free and all are welcome.

Donal’s first novel “The Spinning Heart” won both Newcomer of the Year and the overall Book of the Year at the Bord Gais Irish Book Awards 2012. His second “The Thing About December” will be published in September 2013.
