Hi all!
Today I encountered technical problems AND found tooo many events. For this reason the Dublin Event Guide is today as late as it was never before. If it continues like that, it will soon take me 36 hours to write it. So for that reason, I will from now on try to cut events. I tried to avoid that for the last 299 issues, but something has to happen and this something means that I will have to pre-select events instead of including everything I find. How exactly, I don’t know yet, but I will spend the next week to think about it.
[ad]
Today the most important thing is to get the Dublin Event Guide out to you! So, this intro is very short today, just let me remind you of the essentials:
Please tell your friends about the Dublin Event Guide and get them to subscribe on www.dublineventguide.com And also send them to join the more than 13,000 people that LIKE the Dublin Event Guide on Facebook at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide .
Please also consider a donation. I need and much appreciate donations from you, the readers: You can help with your donation of the tiny sum of EUR 1 per month. And that EUR 1 per month (or EUR 12 per year) will ensure that I can pay the bills for the Dublin Event Guide week after week. I need EUR 170 per month. Go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm to help. Thanks!
And continue also to help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you order goods. If you buy goods immediately after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide because the company you buy from gives a small commission to the Dublin Event Guide. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have an event-full week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive.
For today’s Feel Good Slot, I found a picture of stairs that had the following written on them in chalk: “You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the FIRST STEP!”
Do you “tomorrow” yourself sometimes? And don’t want to start something until all “ducks are in a row”? Until everything is arranged and prepared? If you want to achieve something you have to take the first step! And the sooner you take it the sooner you achieve your goals. Don’t postpone it. Start TODAY!
(The picture is here www.indulgy.com/post/0IwcgLRLM1/you-dont-have-to-see-the-whole-staircasejust-tak )

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
Last week Moacir GdO, Rose P, Frank W, Niall McD, Evin L and Brendan M were the wonderful people that helped with a donation. All the support is much appreciated!
Have you helped? Your help is absolutely needed too to ensure that everyone will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and I need your help!
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s only 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down
This week’s Dublin Event Guide turned out to be super long with lots and lots aof events and it is sooooo late. So I won’t spend too much time on picking some events. Instead, I have marked some events and if you use the smart phone version of the Dublin Event Guide, you see my picks marked clearly. In the e-mail version this is not visible, but if you just type m.dublineventguide.com in your browser, you can see the smart phone version even if you are in front of your computer. Try it out! :-)

Ray Heffernan & The Grand Canal Band
Sat 09 March – 20:00
Unitarian Church, 112 St. Stephen’s Green West, Dublin 2
The Dublin singer-songwriter Ray Heffernan is now living in Italy and him and his new 7-piece band of Italian musicians, called The Grand Canal Band, are in Dublin to premiere the music he has written at a special rare Dublin performance in the Unitarian Church. Taking his inspiration as much from Patrick Kavanagh as Mic Christopher or Irish mythology, Heffernan’s songs are soulful and really really nice with Irish strong influences but lots more as well. The new CD “New Dress Woven” (the title itself taken from a Patrick Kavanagh poem) will be available at the concert. Interstingly, Ray Heffernan wrote the song “Angels” that was a bit success for Robbie Williams, but Robbie Williams took it and never recognised Heffernan as the writer.
Have a listen to some of the songs of “New Dress Woven” at www.rayheffernan.net It is really a beautiful album. Tickets for the evening are EUR 10 at the door.
For one fast acting Dublin Event Guide reader, Eva Marinus was so great to make a pair of tickets available and if you want to win that ticket you have to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com as soon as possible. Your ticket has to be with me before 10:00 tomorrow morning (Sat 09 March) and please note that the gig is tomorrow evening! Your mail has to have the subject line WOVEN and the body of the mail has to include your full name and your mobile phone number and I will notify you by text message by midday if you won. Thanks, Eva, for the tickets!

The Great Hunger by Patrick Kavanagh – Ticket Competition
16+17 March – 20:00 (Doors: 19:30)
Bewleys Cafe Theatre (full bar), Grafton Street, Dublin 2
Peter Duffy will perform The Great Hunger by Patrick Kavanagh in Bewley’s Cafe Theatre. Peter is originally from County Monaghan and has a natural feel for the language and sensibility of the text.
First published in 1942, the epic poem “The Great Hunger” is one of the classics of Irish literature – many feel it is Kavanagh’s best work, a masterpiece. It is a long narrative poem set in rural County Monaghan in the 1930s/early 40s. It concerns the life and struggles of the anti-hero and small farmer Patrick Maguire. An un-sentimental portrait of the life and times, it has echoes of The Great Famine in the title and the text. – After the performance (approx. 1 hr 10 min) there will be a post performance talk / Q&A.
Tickets are EUR 12/10 and you can book on 087 9892994 or bewleysbookings@gmail.com or you can buy tickets at the door.
Peter has made two tickets available for the performance on Sat 16 March and if you want to win the pair of tickets, you will have to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with HUNGER in the subject line and with your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. The mail has to be with me by Tue 12 March at 14:00. Thanks for the tickets!

Monsoon Accessorize going into examinership
Monsoon Accessorize, the women’s clothing chain, which employs 269 people in Ireland in 18 stores and has a shop in Grafton Street, is going into examinership. The company will then have 100 days to sort out their financial troubles and it is expected that all shops will stay open during that time. However, if you have to return something or if you have a gift voucher, don’t delay! There seems to be a good chance that Monsoon will survive, but there is never a guarantee. www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/finance/2013/0306/1224330830068.html

Hughes & Hughes Dundrum closing down
Book Shop Hughes & Hughes was in trouble around 2010 and was saved back then. Now in a surprise move they are closing down their shop next to the Dundrum Town Centre. The shop at Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre and all other branches will stay open, but if you have any gift cards, it might be a good idea to exchange them for books rather sooner than later in any of the other branches….you never know! www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2013/0307/breaking58.html (In general it is probably advisable in the current climate NOT to give any gift cards from any shop as a present, but instead to give cash.)

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Relay for Life – RCSI Cancer Society
17:00, Sat 09 Mar
YMCA Sports Ground, Sandymount
Relay for Life is a 24 hour, overnight community celebration which honours current and former cancer patients, their families and friends. It began in the US in the mid 1980’s and has now become a major international fundraiser. This is the first time that the event takes place in Ireland and RCSI and Trinity Cancer Societies decided to team up to bring the first Relay to the City Centre.
Teams of friends, neighbours, families and colleagues come together in groups of 10-20 people to take part in the event. The event is also open to the entire community, so all are welcome to attend. Teams raise funds for the Irish Cancer Society prior to Relay and the event itself is free. Baked goods, raffle tickets, etc will be sold on the day and all funds raised going to the Irish Cancer Society to support their work.
Relay for Life will take place at the YMCA Sports Ground in Sandymount on Sat 09 March from 17:00 until Sunday 17:00. Because cancer never sleeps, each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the 24-hour event. Otherwise team members and guests are free to socialise, picnic, play games, enjoy 24 hour live entertainment and participate in lots of fun activities. There will be bands, dance groups, speakers, a date auction, and lots of other events. Everybody in the community is invited to come along and experience this inspiring event of celebration and commemoration. www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlgrNlvzt88

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 10 Mar
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Risks of Fracking
18:30 – 21:00, Mon 11 Mar
Smock Alley Theatre, 7 Exchange Street Lwr, Temple Bar, Dublin 2
Fracking is the meachanic (hydraulic) creation of fractures in rock layers to get easier access to natural gas and oil. The process of fracking brings lots of risks because it can remove the natural separation between drinking water and oil or gas, which means that the drinking water could easily get contaminated.
The Friends of the Earth are inviting to a talk about the huge risks of fracking and why we need to know about it. Jessica Ernst, a Canadian expert about this topic, who has been on both sides of the discussion will give the talk.
The event was completely booked out, but the interest was so huge that Friends of the Earth have moved it to a bigger room in the Smock Alley Theatre and no more places became available. You can book your free place here www.eventbrite.ie/event/4001927874 Find more details on the website below. www.facebook.com/events/484615198265216/?fref=ts

St. Patrick’s Day – Trad Stage

Meeting House Square, Temple Bar, Dublin 2
Three of Ireland’s most recognised names in traditional Irish music join forces for a special live stage show, during this year’s St. Patrick’s Festival. Trad Stage will feature the band Guidewires, with their high-energy performances; Liam Ó Maonlaí, one of Ireland’s best Sean Nós (traditional Irish) singers on piano, tin whistle, bodhrán and vocals; and Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill, traditional Irish singer, pianist and composer, who is considered to be one of the most influential female Irish vocalists.
It is absolutely not clear from all the information available if this event is free or not, but because there is also no information available about where to get tickets, I assume that it is free and no booking is required.

St. Patrick’s Day – Powerscourt Centre
14:00 – 16:00, Fri 15 Mar
Powerscourt Centre, 59 South William Street, Dublin 2
The Powerscourt Centre have their own little S. Patrick’s Day Festival, but unfortunately they are seriously challenged (others would say “totally incapable”) when it comes to making readable and comprehensive information available on their website.
I gather that there is Irish Music from 14:00-16:00 on Friday and that is free. There are also two other events, but they are not or might not be free. The Magic Turtles workshop for families is not free (EUR 5 per child, free for adults) but I have no clue if there is an admission charge for the Irish Dancing show.

St. Patrick’s Day – Festival Ceili
16:30 – 19:30, Fri 15 Mar
St. Stephen’s Green, Dublin 2
The St. Patrick’s Festival Ceílí will take place on Friday at St Stephen’s Green North, that’s the side where Top Shop, Londis and the 2Euro shop are, near Dawson Street. It is an outdoor celebration of traditional Irish dancing and everyone is invited to take part. Admission is free, just arrive and listen to the traditional Irish music or take part in the dancing.
It’s a pity that this event does not take place on the Sat, Sun or Bank Holiday Monday so that more people can enjoy it, but hopefully some of you will get a chance to get to it after work on Friday. I haven’t been at the Ceili for a good few years because it has been on a Friday, but before, when it took place on the day of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, I enjoyed the mayhem entirely. ;-)

New “Dublin’s Best” Magazine – Full of Dublin’s worst
A new magazine has been issued in March 2013 in Dublin. It is called “Dublin’s Best”, costs EUR 1.95 and uses the subtitle “An Essential Guide to the Best Dublin Has to Offer”. With that title and subtitle I would have expected totally different content than what is indicated on the Front Page. The big headlines on the Front Page are “Who Killed Annie McCarrick?”, “Emigration – The 12 Best Places for you to Live”, “Exclusive Michael Lynn Interview” (about the solicitor on the run from the tax authorities.) and “What To Do with your Redundancy?”. Now if the people behind this new magazine think these topics are “Dublin’s Best”, then they live in a dark and sad space. They will definitely not win me as a customer with these headlines and maybe we should take bets if the magazine will be able to survive its first 6 months with that approach. I wouldn’t bet a cent on it! www.broadsheet.ie/2013/03/06/anything-good-in-dublins-best/
Weekly Delivery of Rats and Mice
Sometimes the oddest news is hidden in the most unexpected places. Did you see that a small cargo plane had an accident on Thursday at Dublin Airport? The nose wheel collapsed AFTER the landing and luckily nobody got injured and the damage to the plane is limited. ( www.thejournal.ie/dublin-airport-runway-closed-after-small-aircraft-crash-822245-Mar2013/ ) Interestingly, though, TheJournal.ie found out some intriguing details: The plane came from Manston in Kent, UK and was full of rats and mice! The rats and mice are delivered to Ireland to be sold in pet shops. Ohh! And the most amazing thing: “The cargo of live rats and mice is a regular arrival every Thursday at the airport, a source said.” EVERY Thursday!? www.thejournal.ie/rats-mice-plane-dublin-airport-rodents-822673-Mar2013
