A big open air photo projection will take place on Barnardos Square until Sun 27 Jan. The pictures are from a collection of Bill Hastings’ photographs and will run every night from 17:00-23:00. The exhibition runs as part of the Othered Voices programme of Temple Bar Tradfest.

To celebrate the 254th anniversary of the birth of Scotland’s national poet Robert Burns (born on 25th Jan 1759) a poetry reading will take place in the Ranelagh Arts Centre. Various poems penned by the national poet of Scotland (where he is known to all just as ‘the bard’) will be read and also by poets influenced by his work. If you know one of his poems you can request it or recite it yourself. There might also be some Haggis to try. Admission is free.

The Temple Bar Tradfest 2013 takes place from Tues 22 Jan until Sun 27 Jan. The (mostly) free element of the Temple Bar Tradfest is the “Music Trail”, which will take place in 17 venues (i.e. pubs) and extends to around 200 events of which many are free. A series of free early evening organ recitals in association with the National Concert Hall and the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra. Part funded by The Arts Council and Dublin City Council will take place and the next concert is on Fri.

David Adams will perform Arnold Schoenberg’s “Variations on a Recitative, Op. 40” and Franz Liszt’s “Fantasy and Fugue on the Chorale Ad nos, ad salutarem undam”.

The concert takes place in the Main Auditorium of the NCH and seats are unreserved. You need to book tickets on the NCH website, but the tickets are free.

The Dublin Food Co-op is open every Saturday at Newmarket for organic wholefoods and sustainable household products, plus over a dozen producer stalls offering organic fruit and veg., baked goods, dairy produce, wines, hot and cold food, etc. The Co-op is also open on Thursdays 12:00-20:00.

The weekly Honest2goodness food market in Glasnevin has fresh meat, vegetables, fish, baked goods, and wines. It is open from 09:30-16:00. It is behind Lidl in the Industrial Estate just after the Glasnevin Cemetary coming from the City Centre.

Parkrun Ireland is organising free weekly runs in parks. It is a timed run over 5km and participation is completely free, but registration before your first parkrun is required.

Children who can play a tune on the fiddle, bodhrán, harp, concertina, or any instrument, can drop in to this free open trad seisiún led by members of Ceoltóirí Chluain Tarbh, a long established and highly active Irish music organisation. Families are invited to come, watch and enjoy.
Admission id free on a first come first served basis. Places in the session will be allocated on the day based on availability. Participation is recommended for children who have been learning traditional music for one year or more. Children wishing to participate must bring their own instruments.

This Drop-in crafts club entitled “The Courts of Crafts” is an event in partnership with the Crafts Council of Ireland and is part of the Temple Bar Tradfest 2013. IT is suitable for ages 4+ and the Drop-in sessions will take approx. 30 minutes.
At The Court of Crafts, travel back in time and try your hand at willow-weaving, textiles and metal crafting, all inspired by the royal courts, clothing and jewellery of the ancient high kings and queens of Ireland.

Admission is free on a first come first served basis. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

The weekly Ha’penny Flea Market is an indoor market in the Grand Social Pub, which offers vintage Men and Women’s clothing, contemporary crafts, books, DVDs, vinyl records, vintage and handmade jewellery, vintage hair styles, art, photography and much more. Dux & Co will offer food and the Grand Social’s Bar and Gourmet Coffee options are available.

Astronomy Ireland are continuing their weekly Sun Shows at the Astronomy Ireland Shop in Swords. Each Saturday, the staff of the Astronomy Ireland Shop will be showing you amazing views of our nearest star. Using special filters and some of the largest telescopes in Ireland you will get to see sunspots bigger than Earth and huge solar flare bursting from our nearest star. If it’s cloudy, there will be a telescope demonstration and you will find out how you can safely observe the Sun and undertake some daytime astronomy using your own telescope.

The Ink Slingers Creative Writing Hour takes place every Saturday at the Irish Writers’ Centre. It is a free creative writing session that is organised and led by the Centre’s voluntary arts administrators. The hour includes writing exercises and prompts to get ideas flowing. It is open to everyone and is suitable for all levels of experience.

The Sundays at Noon Concert Series takes place again in the Sculpture Gallery at the Hugh Lane Gallery. Now in its 36th year, this series of free (mainly classical) concerts continues to present the best of Irish and International music and musicians. Concerts run from September to June. This week, the Coder Dojo will take place on the Sunday. The Coder Dojo is for the 10-18 year olds, tell your kids or friends or similar in that age group.

A Coder Dojo is a place where kids can hang out with other kids that share their interest for all things Internet, programming/coding and technologies like HTML, PHP or Phyton. It is a place for sharing and learning and creating things. For more details visit www.coderdojo.com/ Participants need to bring a Laptop and eat lunch before they come to the Coder Dojo. Participants under 16 must be accompanied by a parent.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

The Gardiner Street Gospel Choir Mass invites to a Mass in St. Francis Xavier Church at the top of Gardiner Street near the junction with Dorset Street every Sunday at 19:30. The Gardiner Street Gospel Choir, one of the best known choirs in Ireland will sing during the mass and everybody is welcome independent from your level of religiousness.

Rogério from the Brazilian dance project “Forró de Lampião” in Dublin tells me: Forró de Lampião is Brazilian music that has the same roots as Samba and there is a whole culture that has developed around “forro”. “Rhythm Rocker at The Globe” is a weekly event on Sunday night in The Globe in Sth Great Georges Street, Dublin 2. It is a Rockabilly, R’n’R, Roots night with alternating (week by week) live bands Pavement Kings, Donna & The Sazzy Catz, The Mosquitoes and The Pacifics from 21:00 and with DJs from 23:00-01:30. An evening of discussion with Kenyan Firoze Manji, who was the editor-in-chief of the pan-African website for freedom and justice “Pambazuka”, and with Margaret Gillan, an Irish Community Activist, about social justice and radical communications will take place. Facilitator is Laurence Cox, co-editor of the open-access social movements journal Interface (interfacejournal.net) and co-director of the MA in Community Education, Equality and Social Activism at NUI Maynooth.

‘African and African Diaspora Manuscripts in the Trinity College Library: Authors, Scribes and Collectors’ is a lecture by Prof Nikolay Dobronravin, St Petersburg State University in the Trinity Long Room Hub. During his lecture, Prof Dobronravin will explore the West African manuscripts of the Trinity College Library, with a focus on authors, scribes and collectors.

IFI’s free monthly film club is taking place again and will be a discussion about three very different but equally provocative films. “London is Burning” is the title of this event. There will be a screening of the documentary ‘London is Burning: Painful Conversations’, followed by a discussion with the director, Dr Haim Bresheeth.

Seemingly coming from nowhere, the streets of London were lit by fires and wrecked by multiple rioting during the second week of August 2011. London is Burning’ was made during the months following the riots, and features a number of key activists and social theorists in conversation about this painful social event. Questions about the events still remain: Was this a disaster waiting to happen? Could it happen again? What does it tell us of the police and its communal concept? But more than anything, what does it say about the crisis of capitalism, and its corrosive effects on society and its moral values?

The Anti Room was founded in 2008 by four Dublin-based journalists and was the home of many Irish ladies writing about everything from fashion to feminism and pop culture to politics. Last year, they’ve started podcasting and you can listen to or download some of the recent episodes here.

In October a live recording of their monthly broadcast was so successful that the next podcast will be recorded live again. The Anti Room hosts Sinead Gleeson and Anna Carey will be joined by Laurie Penny (Penny Red), Suzy Byrne (Mamam Poulet) and Anthea McTiernan (former chairperson of the IFPA, member of the Abortion Rights Campaign and editor of The Ticket).

The launch of Ben Simon’s newest book “Tales, Traditions and Folklore of Ireland’s Trees” will take place. Ben Simon was a board member of Crann for many years and is an authority on Ireland’s hidden heritage of tree folklore. Sharing his knowledge of the many new stories he has researched, and revisiting well-known heritage trees, he provides information and encouragement to help local groups discover and celebrate stories of trees in their area.

Admission to this event is free and it will take place in the Education and Visitor Centre.

The “Havana International Language Exchange” is taking place every Wed from 16:30-19:30 in Havana Tapas Bar in George’s Street. There are many Spanish speakers and English-speakers are explicitly invited, but everyone else is certainly very welcome too, to meet for a chat to improve your Spanish or English.

‘Multiculturalism and Muslims in Europe’ is a lecture by Dr Erkan Toguslu, KU Leuven University Belgium, organised by the Ireland Dialogue Society as part of the Euro-Visions Public Lecture Series on Europe. Using the debates on multiculturalism in Europe, Dr Toguslu will explore the ways how religion and culture rise above transnational and transcultural boundaries and how transnational and transcultural Muslims can be formulated in public life.

The King Kong Club is a weekly music game-show in the Mercantile. Each week 6-7 bands/solo artists play three songs each. At the end of all the performances a clap-off with the King Kong Club Clap-o-Meter takes place and the winner goes through to a semi-final and it all culminates after six months of competition with The Grand Final, held in front of a panel of celebrity judges.

The list of performers is not yet announced on their Facebook Page and I am not sure if it will be put up there, but check it anyway.

“The Song Room” is another open mic event. It takes place in The Globe in George’s Street at 20:30 every Wednesday.

“The Zodiac Sessions” is a regular open mic event from 20:30 in Bruxelles (between Grafton Street and Westbury Hotel) for unsigned musicians. Admission is free and there is a different line-up every week.

Digital Dublin is an initative designed to develop Dublin as a digital city and the roll out of free public WiFi is a big step forward for Digital Dublin. Dublin Free Wifi will be launched on Thursday and for the launch there is a “Dublin WiFi Day” taking place on Barnardo’s Square (the square directly beside City Hall) in Dame Street. Stop by to see what Dublin Free Wifi entails.

The Ferocious Mingle Marcade (Market and Arcade) place every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday it is a fancy dress market. It’s a flea-market type permanent market with stalls and “chalets” for traders. The Oscar Verne Café on site and (at least at the weekends) live music adds even more character.

This is a tour for guardians (parents, grandparents, nannies, etc) with babies where prams are explicitly welcome. It runs from 30 Jan – 02 Feb and people like Ed Yong, Maryn McKenna and Carl Zimmer, as well as representatives of some of the world’s leading universities and science publications will be going along. – But it’s in North Carolina, so not everyone can be there in person!

That’s why the Science Gallery will be streaming some of the talks and panel discussions live or recorded. Three of the talks will be shown over two days and you are invited to share your thoughts on some of the hottest topics in science communication. There will be two sessions, one on Thursday and one on Friday. Admission is free (you can register on the website below), you can come and go whenever you like and you are encouraged to have a conversation about the panel discussion once it’s over.

“British composer Christopher Fox will be at the Trinity College Music Composition Centre to discuss representation and embodiment in the composition of modern opera and music-theatre with reference to his recent works, in particular his chamber opera Widerstehen and his upcoming project Roger Go to Yellow Three, or, The Sense of Hearing.”

The presentation of this unique documentary on German painter Gerhard Richter, one of the most influential artists living today, is the Goethe-Institut’s contribution to the exhibition “Sigmar Polke and Gerhard Richter – Works on Paper” in the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA). The film focuses on Richter?s body of work and offers detailed insight into his creative process. From preparations through the pondering of ideas up to the actual painting, the camera follows him until a new piece is completed.

The Dublin Writers’ Forum welcomes writers of all genres, of all ages and all levels of experience. DWF is an open group of writers who share a common passion for all things literary. It is a safe ‘working space’ where on a weekly basis writers can bring their work to be critiqued by other writers.

Dimestore Recordings run a weekly event in Sweeney Mongrel’s, Dame Street (formerly Le Cirk) with a variety of bands and performers. It starts at 20:00, follow the link for the line up.

A “Water Element Meditation” with the art collective ANiMA LiBERA will take place in the Lantern Centre. It is an evening of Spiritual music & Mantra. Water symbolizes purity, clarity and calmness and reminds us to cleanse our minds and attain the state of purity. This Water group meditation with live mantra and visuals is a full 5 senses experience. Admission is by open donation.

Bad Boy Jake are every Thursday until the end of February in the newly re-opened Rathmines Inn, playing their rock, blues and Americana.

Jaime Nanci & The Blue Boys are playing a weekly gig in the Mercantile Hotel on Thursdays. Their music is swing, blues, bebop and doo wop. Admission is free.
