The second week is nearly over, the number of events is increasing slightly and the outlook is quite good. The 2013 festivals are being planned and more information will emerge in coming week. It should be a busy year and I have lots of plans for it, but I won’t tell you anything YET. I need to do some groundwork first.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down
There are a few more events this week and I see a definite increase in number and quality of events, but it is still early days. The start of the year is the slowest time of the whole year. Before Christmas I listed more than 180 events and currently it is just above 110, so you see a dramatic difference, but that is not necessarily a terrible thing. It just gives you a chance to properly focus on the things that are on instead of having to worry that you miss out on some events.
This week I suggest you go to the GAME exhibition in the Science Gallery if you haven’t been yet. It is the last week of GAME! In addition there is the Fusion Sunday World Market on Sunday, which is always interesting. Then there is a bit more a unique event on Sunday morning: Check out the Bird Market just out of curiosity.
And if you want some more recommendations then check out the regular events like the Saucy Sunday and Sunday Roast and Comedy Crunch (Sun + Mon), the Grand Folk Club in Tuesday and Inn Jokes on Wednesday.

Too many changes in shops & restaurants + Korky’s Grafton Street closed
There is a massive level of instability in the shop/restaurant landscape in Dublin. Constant closures and re-openings, followed by more closures often in the same premises clearly shows that shops & restaurants experience very tough times. And the biggest factor in all this is the rent that has to be paid for the premises. While a business owner could try to increase sales or reduce the running cost, one thing that is crippling nearly all shops is the horrendously high cost of rent.
A quite well-known victim of the crazy rent situation is the shoe shop “Korky’s” in Grafton Street. John Corcoran decided to close the shop in 47 Grafton Street on 08 Jan (but to continue his shops in Henry Street and in the Ilac Centre). Korky’s was in Grafton Street since 1992, but in 2005 his rent for the 100 sqm shop increased from EUR 210k to EUR 445k. That is a cost of EUR 1219 per day (!!). I don’t know how much Korky’s shoes cost, but if we assume they are on average maybe EUR 70 and of that approx. 50% is the margin, then Korky’s would have to sell 35 pairs of shoes just to cover the rent. Staff cost, light, heating, insruances and a profit for the shop owner are not even considered.
The owner of the building is Canada Life and the dispute that John Corcoran had with Canada Life was instrumental to the banning of upwards-only rent reviews. But this ban only applies to new contracts. Korky’s lost their battle. Thanks Canada Life! :-(

Free Art Workshops exploring Gender Equality and Women Empowerment
A group of volunteers are organising art workshops focusing on Gender Equality and Empowering Women. The workshops are free and open to any adult interested in getting involved with making two group paintings which will be part of a larger exhibition later.
The workshops will include discussion, writing captions, reflecting on images of women in various settings, and creating two paintings. You don’t need to be a talented artist to participate, everybody is welcome! The workshops will take place from 18:00-20:00 on 24-31 Jan and 07 Feb in the Irish Aid Centre, 31 O’Connell Street Upper, Dublin 1.

JMW Turner at the National Gallery

For only one month every year you can see the JMW Turner exhibition in the National Gallery.
Henry Vaughan, a wealthy English art collector, died in 1899 and left 31 watercolours and drawings by JMW Turner RA (1775-1851) to the National Gallery with the stipulation that the works should only be shown during the month of January.

Cuban Film Posters

The Instituto Cubano de Arte e Industria Cinematográficos (ICAIC), the Cuban Film Institute, presents numerous screenings of locally produced and international films throughout Cuba each year and for each, a unique poster is created by a Cuban graphic artist. These posters are totally handmade. In the silk-screen process a screen is hand cut for each individual colour. Each colour is applied separately. Each colour takes 24 hrs to dry before the next can be applied.
A unique exhibition of Cuban Film Posters, coinciding with the Cuban Film Season, will take place in the Instituto Cervantes. Admission is free.

Polish Art Exhibition – WOSP

The Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity (WOSP – Wielka Orkiestra Swiatecznej Pomocy – en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Orchestra_of_Christmas_Charity) is a yearly charity event that takes place in Poland and in places where Polish people live outside of Poland. This year is the 21th anniversary of the event and for the 8th time WOSP will take place in Dublin as well. This year’s cause is to raise funds to safe the lives of children and providing adequate health care for the elderly.
The Irish-Polish contribution will be through an art exhibition: The exhibition will take place from Wed 09 Jan until Sat 12 Jan in the In-Spire Galerie (formerly Mad-Art Gallery). Admission to the exhibition is free but donation boxes are available. The exhibition will be open on Thurs, Fri and Sat from 11:00-17:00.
On Sunday 13 Jan, the Grand Finale will take place and during this there will be an art auction of the art pieces from the exhibition in the Living Room in Cathal Brugha Street (just off Upper O’Connell Street). Polish Art Exhibition – WOSP

The Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity (WOSP – Wielka Orkiestra Swiatecznej Pomocy – en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Orchestra_of_Christmas_Charity) is a yearly charity event that takes place in Poland and in places where Polish people live outside of Poland. This year is the 21th anniversary of the event and for the 8th time WOSP will take place in Dublin as well. This year’s cause is to raise funds to safe the lives of children and providing adequate health care for the elderly.
The Irish-Polish contribution will be through an art exhibition: The exhibition will take place from Wed 09 Jan until Sat 12 Jan in the In-Spire Galerie (formerly Mad-Art Gallery). Admission to the exhibition is free but donation boxes are available. The exhibition will be open on Thurs, Fri and Sat from 11:00-17:00.
On Sunday 13 Jan, the Grand Finale will take place and during this there will be an art auction of the art pieces from the exhibition in the Living Room in Cathal Brugha Street (just off Upper O’Connell Street). I was in the Science Gallery last weekend and really recommend the exhibition. Lots of opportunities to participate by playing Moonlander or walking through a maze while you see yourself from above etc. Give it a go!

Every Sunday morning a bunch of Bird enthusiasts come together with cages full of birds and show and sell their birds in Peter Street, between St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Aungier Street. Release of Seal “Rosie”

On October a little seal pup was found abandoned and injured on a beach in Mayo by two friends out walking. They called the seal “Rosie” and brought it to Dublin where, with the help of the Irish Seal Sanctuary, a rescue plan was worked out. Rosie, which turned out to be male and is now also called “Sam” has since tripled in weight and is deemed to be ready to return to the sea and will be released at Howth harbour in Sunday. Everybody is welcome to join the event.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)
Is Buying Irish really a good thing?
Schools, Parents, Shops, Farming Organisations and even TV Programmes tell us to “Buy Irish” and there are websites and in some shops hundreds of tags that identify Irish products so that you can choose them over the non-Irish products. If Ireland was completely self-sufficient and was able to provide all goods from within the country and was not exporting anything, this would make a lot of sense. The environmental impact of transporting Green Beans from Kenia to Ireland or of bringing apples from Spain to Ireland also is another strong argument in favour of local shopping.
But is it really a good thing when you consider everything? “Everything” in this case means that you consider the Irish exports and you assume that if people in Ireland should buy local goods over imported ones, then this should apply to all other people in other countries too. Right? Nothing else would make sense!
But consider this: The Irish Dairy Board is exporting butter to the value of EUR 1bn (!!). (www.rte.ie/news/2012/1114/irish-dairy-board-wins-tesco-butter-deal-business.html) That is a LOT of money. And hear that: In 2010 it was announced that Kerrygold exported Irish butter to Germany alone to the value of EUR 175m in one year. That is EUR 5m more than the whole Gathering is expected to bring in. (The Kerrygold share of the German butter market was 13.5%!). www.farmersjournal.ie/site/farming-Kerrygold-break-sales-record-12256.html Now imagine if the Kerrygold buyers in other countries would buy local goods in the same way as you are meant to buy Irish goods? And imagine if they found out (and this was used by the local competitors against Irish goods) that people in Ireland use local products over the imported products from these countries? This would mean a MASSIVE loss of exports. Do the “Buy Irish” proponents consider that? Most likely not! Odd!
So what are we meant to do? I’d say buy the best quality product or the best priced product and buy it from whereever it comes from. And IN CASE you have a slight preference for Irish goods, then don’t tell anybody about it, especially when you are on holidays abroad. ;-)

If you had expected a straight run into spring time, then the colder temperatures most likely reminded you that winter is far from over. And it is only the start of a much colder period than the unusually warm weeks after Christmas. So, don’t pack the wolly jumpers away yet. Until mid-March it could still snow! ;-) So indoor events is a good thing for another while, but I can’t wait until the outdoor festivals start again.
