A series of Friday-night GAME socials will take place in the Science Gallery with some old-school analogue games, plus a few new ones you’ve probably never heard of. Come along and learn new tricks with new friends in the Science Gallery cafe over some drinks or food, every Friday up to Christmas. Radio Joinery presents Sound +/- Vision, a “three-day long event of talks, performance and music which will be additionally broadcast online. While setting up a temporary radio-station is a crucial element of the project, it will also celebrate not so much the idea of radio itself, but radio as a means of creating a shared experience. The project will explore the notion of live experience versus its online relay; the getting together, listening and seeing versus the radio-station as a one-sided experience.”

The stadium is just a few minutes walk from the Red LUAS line stop and numerous bus stops. For traders the Car Boot Sale opens at 06:30 for buyers from 08:00. The Dublin Food Co-op is open every Saturday at Newmarket for organic wholefoods and sustainable household products, plus over a dozen producer stalls offering organic fruit and veg., baked goods, dairy produce, wines, hot and cold food, etc. The Co-op is also open on Thursdays 12:00-20:00.

The weekly Honest2goodness food market in Glasnevin has fresh meat, vegetables, fish, baked goods, and wines. It is open from 09:30-16:00. It is behind Lidl in the Industrial Estate just after the Glasnevin Cemetary coming from the City Centre.

Astro-Expo is Astronomy Ireland’s yearly exhibition, Ireland’s largest Astronomy and Space Exhibition, and it will take place this Saturday in the Sami Nasr Institute of Advanced Materials (SNIAM) in Trinity College. It is an exhibition of Telescopes and photos and equipment that members bring along each year to show new members and the public how exciting their hobby is. Throughout the day a host of telescope and equipment demonstrations and displays (including high-power amateur rockets from the Irish Rocketry Society) will be available and there are also three interesting talks.

The exhibitions and demonstrations are free, but the lectures are EUR 7 for each (!) lecture (EUR 5 for members). You can pre-book tickets for the lectures via the website.

“Feeding the 5000” is an interesting event this Saturday. Surprisingly ;-) it does exactly what it says on the tin: 5,000 Dubliners are invited to enjoy a hot vegetarian meal made entirely out of fresh misshapen vegetables that would otherwise go to waste. And with that you will get apple juice made from wonky but wonderful apples that would otherwise go unloved in orchards across the country. So come along and as long as some food is left, enjoy this free meal.

The weekly Ha’penny Flea Market is an indoor market in the Grand Social Pub, which offers vintage Men and Women’s clothing, contemporary crafts, books, DVDs, vinyl records, vintage and handmade jewellery, vintage hair styles, art, photography and much more. Dux & Co will offer food and the Grand Social’s Bar and Gourmet Coffee options are available.

The Dublin Council of Trade Unions are protesting against cuts and all types of austerity measures. The event starts at 13:00 at the usual spot for demonstrations, the Garden of Remembrance on Parnell Square. I couldn’t find where the march goes to, but the usual destination is the Dail in Kildare Street or alternatively Merrion Square.

Some people are quite critical about the Union’s involvement in these protests, considering that all bar one of the union bosses earn between 100k and 200k ( www.independent.ie/national-news/big-salaries-and-pensions-of-union-bosses-uncovered-3237083.html ), others wonder where – if not through cuts or tax increases – the money will come from, but everybody needs to decide for themselves if this protest is the best way to express your opinion.

The Ink Slingers Creative Writing Hour takes place every Saturday at the Irish Writers’ Centre. It is a free creative writing session that is organised and led by the Centre’s voluntary arts administrators. The hour includes writing exercises and prompts to get ideas flowing. It is open to everyone and is suitable for all levels of experience.

Former golfer Christy O’Connor Jnr will be in Eason’s to sign his recent book.

An interesting, but extremely difficult to describe event (because it is so multi-facetted) is taking place in Donnybrook. It is a fundraiser for a Daycare Centre for the Elderly. There is no admission charge, but donations are required and hoped for.

The afternoon will have craft workshops, there are baked goods and a raffle of hand-made goods. There will be tea and you can swap stories. You can bring your won craft-work or try something new (origami, car-making and more) and there will be a Stichers’ Corner. If you are into crafts, this is definitely something you have to check out more! Go to the facebook page and hopefully it will become clearer to you. ;-)

A free concert with the Dublin Orchestral Players to celebrate the opening of the new Riverbank Day Centre for the homeless and drug addicted, followed by a blessing of the centre by the Franciscan Friars. The Church is located directly across from Four Courts.

Every Sunday, the Merrion Square Open Air Art Gallery takes place. Up to 200 artists exhibit their paintings on the railings on three sides (West, North and East) of Merrion Square and you can just enjoy the exhibition or even buy.

The next Dublin Flea Market is taking place on Sun from 11:00-17:00. The flea market takes place every last Sunday of the month. The market is made up of about 60 stalls and all kinds of second-hand/pre-loved goods are sold for low prices.

The Sundays at Noon Concert Series is back after the summer break and takes place again in the Sculpture Gallery at the Hugh Lane Gallery. Now in its 36th year, this series of free (mainly classical) concerts continues to present the best of Irish and International music and musicians. Concerts run from September to June. The next concert will feature Jazz pianist Kenny Werner performing solo.

Vegan Performance artist and poet Dominic Barry will perform at three different locations in Dublin on Sunday as the last event of Vegan Ireland’s events and activities for World Vegan Month.

At 13:00 at Temple Bar Square, Vegan Ireland members, many dressed in animal costumes and fancy dress, will hear Dominic Berry give the first of three public poetry recitations. Free food and literature will be given out.

At 14:00, at the entrance to St. Stephen’s Green, Dominic will give his second “set” of poems alongside an information and vegan food table in aid of Eden Farmed Animal Sanctuary who have launched a new film “You Haven’t Lived Until You’ve Hugged a Turkey,” for World Vegan Month.

At 15:00, Dominic will present a longer collection of his poetry at the Cornucopia Restaurant, Wicklow Street, Dublin.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

I have to admit that I never did and still don’t get the Irish fascination (in some circles) for Christmas Jumpers. That is the jumpers that are only given and worn at Christmas and which have usually quite awful Christmas-related motives on them. Reindeers, Santas, etc.

On Sunday the Christmas Jumpers get a mass airing in the only suitable context: a light-hearted and totally non-serious challenge.

You are asked to dig our your cheesiest Christmas jumper and come to O’Connell Street to set a new world record for the most number of Christmas jumpers in one place at the same time.It won’t surprise you that the previous record was set in Dublin as well. Last year 583 people attended the same event.

The event is part of the activities around the Christmas Tree lighting ceremonies in O’Connell Street. It isn’t explicitly said, but I would assume/expect/hope that particiaption is free.

Unlike the three branches of the National Museum, the National Print Museum is normally not free, but every Sunday there is a free public tour for the next few weeks. Every visit begins with a short audio-visual presentation where the audience can observe active retired printers providing practical demonstrations of machines from the Museum’s collection.

The next Sunday Sketching for 7+ Year olds has the title “Light and Reflections”. No booking necessary. Admission is free and early arrival is recommended.

The public lecture “Reflections of the Age of Reason as seen through the Architecture of Charlemont House” with Patrick Casey will take place. Admission is free and all are welcome. Early arrival is recommended as places are limited.

The main Christmas Lighting event in Dublin is always the lighting of the Christmas Tree in O’Connell Street and you will find out some VERY interesting detail about this years Christmas Tree in the Dublin News section!

The Lighting Ceremony starts at 16:00 with the Christmas Jumper Challenge. After that Christmas carol singers from the Halleluia Gospel Choir and St. Andrew’s Choir will join the army band to perform on O’Connell Street. At 18:00 the Christmas Tree Lights will be switched on. The event is suitable for the whole family and it is free.

Saucy Sundays is a weekly free live music afternoon and evening in the Grand Social. This week’s line up is The Quicksand Band, Lisa McLaughlin, Markas Carcas, Tarantella Fall, Rachel Austin, Stefano Campo, Nathan Conway & The River Valley Band, Carol Keogh & The City Fathers, Dylan Tighe.

The Gardiner Street Gospel Choir Mass invites to a Mass in St. Francis Xavier Church at the top of Gardiner Street near the junction with Dorset Street every Sunday at 19:30. The Gardiner Street Gospel Choir, one of the best known choirs in Ireland will sing during the mass and everybody is welcome independent from your level of religiousness.

Every Sunday a band will play from 21:00-22:30, a Latin Beat Club, Brazilian DJs and Salsa Classes (from 18:00) are additional features. Admission is free.

The weekly Sunday Roast is an event in the Mercantile where live music is combined with free roast potatoes. The next Sunday Roast line up is Miniature Jack, Lost Colours, The Travelloes, plus a special not-yet named act.

Rogério from the Brazilian dance project “Forró de Lampião” in Dublin tells me: Forró de Lampião is Brazilian music that has the same roots as Samba and there is a whole culture that has developed around “forro”. Every Sunday, free dance classes take place in the Grand Social (new loation!) and if you are interested, just turn up one Sunday.

“Rhythm Rocker at The Globe” is a weekly event on Sunday night in The Globe in Sth Great Georges Street, Dublin 2. It is a Rockabilly, R’n’R, Roots night with alternating (week by week) live bands Pavement Kings, Donna & The Sazzy Catz, The Mosquitoes and The Pacifics from 21:00 and with DJs from 23:00-01:30. Futureproof is a weekly science show on Newstalk 106-108fm (Sat 18:00) that looks at how extraordinary science applies to everyday life. Futureproof at the Movies is a film screening organised by Futureproof. The fiom is “The Science of Sunshine”.

The Newstalk show has been exploring the real science behind some of the most iconic science fiction films and now, with the help of TCD solar physics researcher Peter Gallagher, will take on some of the most challenging questions in Danny Boyle’s Sunshine. There will also be a Q&A with Peter Gallagher and Futureproof host Jonathan McCrea.

It is not clear what this event is. It could be a book launch or a talk. Either way, it involves Kevin O’Connor, who is the author of the “forthcoming biography of the artist Harry Kernoff”. I’d say it is a book launch, but the Irish Writer’s Centre website doesn’t give much away.

Poetry Ireland presents the launch of “Snow Falling on Chestnut Hill: New and Selected Poems” by John F. Deane. It will be launched by Jack Harte. Admission is free.

Teagasc and the RDS are inviting to a new series of science lectures on the growing challenges of sustainably meeting the food security needs of the world. This month, The Critical Take (the IFI’s free monthly film club) will discuss new films from the three directors Jacques Audiard, Paul Thomas Anderson and Michael Haneke. Open Mic Night with The Last Tycoons in O’Donoghue’s on Suffolk Street every Tues from 20:00. It’s free and anyone can get up, sing a song or do whatever they like.

An evening of musical entertainment with The Lounge Quartet, an extended line up, play some classic Art Blakey jazz tunes as arranged by saxophonist Brian Wynne. Also featuring Bill Blackmore – trumpet, Colm O’Hara- trombone, Tom Harte – guitar, Tom Dunne – drums, Paidge McConaloig – Bass. Admission is free, but donations are welcome.

The “Havana International Language Exchange” is taking place every Wed from 16:30-19:30 in Havana Tapas Bar in George’s Street. There are many Spanish speakers and English-speakers are explicitly invited, but everyone else is certainly very welcome too, to meet for a chat to improve your Spanish or English.

Olly Murs will be meeting fans and signing copies of his new album ‘Right Place Right Time’. The event will be a signing only and 400 wristbands are available. The event on Wednesday is free, but you have to pay something nevertheless: Fans can pick up a wristband with the purchase of the album from the store from 08:00 on Fri 23 Nov. Maximum of one wristband per customer, which means you would have to buy two albums if you want to go with a friend and your friend has to be there to buy the album because wristbands are given out “in person only”. Quite a lot of conditions if you ask me, but then, I am definitely not the target market! ;-)

At the next event in the RDS Speaker Series, Sandra Delamer will talk about ‘How Did We Get Here? Pointing the James Webb Space Telescope at the distant past’. The talk is aimed at a general audience. Admission is free and everybody is welcome. Booking is required via the website.

‘Hawthorn and Child’ is the story of two London policemen and the lives that connect with them. It is a novel by Dubliner Keith Ridgway and he will discuss and read from it in teh Gutter Bookshop. Admission is free and all are welcome.

The UCD Earth Institute is inviting to a public seminar on the subject of hydraulic fracturing. The Professor of Applied and Environmental Geophysics at Keele University, Peter Styles, will speak on ‘Managing the Risks of Fraccing for Shale Gas extraction’. Luis Alberto de Cuenca and Alicia Mariño will pay homage to writer Bram Stoker, who wrote Dracula. The talk will be chaired by Dr. Jarlath Killen, Lecturer in Victorian Literature at Trinity College Dublin.

“The Song Room” is another open mic event. It takes place in The Globe in George’s Street at 20:30 every Wednesday.

“The Zodiac Sessions” is a regular open mic event from 20:30 in Bruxelles (between Grafton Street and Westbury Hotel) for unsigned musicians. Admission is free and there is a different line-up every week.

The Ferocious Mingle Market takes place every Thursday, Friday, Saturday AND Sunday. On Sunday it is a fancy dress market. It’s a flea-market type permanent market with stalls and “chalets” for traders. The Oscar Verne Café and (at least at the weekends) live music adds even more character.

The Contemporary Music Centre presents the Kirkos Ensemble in the final Salon series concert of 2012. Young musicians from the Kirkos Ensemble will perform a range of recent and new Irish works. The programme consists of solos, duos and trios for varying combinations of violin, viola, cello and piano. It features six works composed over the last eight years and includes two world premieres. Established in April 2012, Kirkos is a contemporary music ensemble founded and run by students of the Royal Irish Academy of Music.

The Contemporary Music Centre’s new music::new Ireland salon series aims to encourage newcomers and enthusiasts to engage with the music Irish composers. Laser Combat is an outdoor sport similar to paintball, but without the paint! Equipment consists of a laser gun which fires beams of invisible infrared light. Each person has a set amount of health points and you will work as a team to defeat the opponent. The night game event on Thursday is free and all equipment will be provided.

Sounds cool! I will DEFINITELY have to try that at some stage!!

The Dublin Writers’ Forum welcomes writers of all genres, of all ages and all levels of experience. DWF is an open group of writers who share a common passion for all things literary. It is a safe ‘working space’ where on a weekly basis writers can bring their work to be critiqued by other writers.
