Hi all!
Dublin Event Guide No 280 today!! Not the biggest “anniversary”, but round numbers are always something special. Interestingly it was No 260 when the new layout was launched and I think you all agree that the improvement is HUGE in comparison to the old Dublin Event Guide. 20 weeks later it is time to introduce another new feature or service and it is my to introduce the Dublin Event Guide Smart Phone App today!! Yes, a LOT of work has gone into that and a group of experts (not me!) was working on that for many many many MANY hours – parallel to their normal day job. This group of experts is from the great company iQ Content and you willr ead a bit more about them in today’s Dublin News.
[ad]
We all have to thank iQ Content hugely and I genuinely hope you will support me in that. They have transformed the Dublin Event Guide completely. The content has always stayed the same and is still done by me, but the layout, the look, the identity, the logo , the website and now even a smart phone app, all this could not have happened without iQ Content.
So, please read the details about the app in the Dublin News and I hope you will enjoy it. It is a web app, so it is very easy to use and you find it at m.dublineventguide.com but this and all the details how to proceed from there are in the Dublin News Section, just scroll down to it! As with all the events, the app is not sold, but is available completely for free, however in return you HAVE to spread the word! ;-)
Now that the Dublin Event Guide not only looks nice, but is even mobile, I hope you will tell even more people about it! Oh, and make sure that they sign-up to the weekly newsletter even if they will often or maybe even mainly use the app. As you know strength is in numbers and our Dublin Event Guide Community is a lot more impactful if we stay strong and grow further, So the new app is not a replacement of the newsletter, it is just a complementary service.
Now, enjoy this week’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and don’t forget to let your friends know about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Send them to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) on the right hand side.
And if you like the new smart phone app, think about how much you would pay elsewhere for such a wonderful and helpful new service and consider donating that money for the up-keep of the Dublin Event Guide. I need to find EUR 170 every month to pay the cost for sending the Dublin Event Guide. So check your pockets and send me all your change. ;-) Any amount helps! Go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm
IQ Content organise a bit of a launch party last Wednesday for the app and I would have loved to see you all there, but I am sure you can imagine that this was not possible, so instead it was more in a smaller scale. But nevertheless new and upcoming Cake Designer LaTortaVita.com made a big and super cake for the event so that I could thank iQ Content. You DEFINITELY want to see that Cake!! :-) It features an edible Spire and edible Aviva Stadium, Liberty Hall, Samuel Beckett Bridge, Convention Centre, Four Courts, the Stephen’s Green Arch, the Liffey and even a Ha’Penny Bridge with the most minute realistic detail. It was an amazing cake. Check it out here: www.facebook.com/LaTortaVita (and click on LIKE if you like it!).
We are more than 10,700 people on the Dublin Event Guide – Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide and are growing every week. Join in and click LIKE on the facebook page and tell your friends! You will get last minute updates and event reminders through the Facebook Page and you can share your free events directly there with the other people in the Dublin Event Guide Community.

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive.
This week I had real opportunity to experience and see the following quote in action. It was Deepak Chopra who said
“All great changes are preceded by chaos.”
With that in mind, you can expect the chaos and instead to panic/worry/getting stressed you can just deal with it. I certainly had some chaos a few times around me this week, but it got all sorted! :-)

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
Last week Erica N, Aine C, Deirdre E, Valerie A, Stephen-Eamonn D, Doreen K, Paul M, Elaine K, Sarah S were the wonderful people that helped with a donation. All the support is much appreciated!!
Have you helped? Your help is absolutely needed too to ensure that everyone will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and I need your help!
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great, (that’s only 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help me to cover the cost (I need to “find” EUR 170 per month to cover the cost and anything above will be invested in improving the Dublin Event Guide!).
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down
I will be in Germany for a few days from tomorrow, so I could say that I will let you find your own “Picks” today, but let me mention a small number of things:
Have a look at the Deer Rut in Phoenix Park tomorrow! An interesting event, I’d say!!
Then there are a number of markets this week again. The Ha’Penny Flea Market (Say Hi to Breda, who sells great Hats there!) and the Etsy Market on Saturday and the Dublin Flea Market on Sunday.
A very unusual event is the Music at Dawn on Monday at the Fumbally Exchange. Look at the time!
And then there is a book launch on Wednesday by comedian Colm Regan.
You have to go to all these events without me, but I will be back just in time for the next Dublin Event Guide! :-)

Brand New and Shiny Dublin Event Guide Smartphone App
May I formally introduce you to the newest addition to the Dublin Event Guide service portfolio: “Dublin for Free” is the Dublin Event Guide on the go! It is a web app that works on most smartphones and will allow you to bring the “Dublin Event Guide (For Free Events)” with you when you are out and about. It will also allow you to check out the current events when you are away from your computer or when the e-zine arrives late AGAIN on a Friday evening. The web app works on Android and on iOS and you can directly access it by putting m.dublineventguide.com in your mobile browser. There is an app in the iOS store and it will be in the Google Play store in the next few days, but you don’t need to dwonload anything.
When you went to m.dublineventguide.com on your browser and you want to put an icon on your homescreen, just do this:
For iOS:
+ When you’re looking at a web page, just hit “+” and select “Add to Home Screen”.
For Android:
+ Bookmark m.dublineventguide.com
+ Go to the home screen you want to add the link to
+ Long-press in an empty space to bring up the “Add to Home Screen” menu
+ Select “Shortcuts”
+ Select “Bookmark”
+ Choose your bookmark!
I will exlain a few features in the coming weeks, but for now, I suggest you check it out and explore it for yourself. The web app will not replace the weekly newsletter, instead it will complement it and will make the Dublin Event Guide better usable.
This wonderful app was created by iQ Content for free for you!! iQ Content is a user experience design consultancy. They design and build digital experiences for mobile, tablet and desktop that help clients achieve results for their business. And the great people in iQ Content are Dublin Event Guide Users, but wanted to make it more usable and mobile, so they created a wonderful new design, built a backend, beautified the e-zine AND wrote an app for us, Absolutely amazing! And all that for you for free. Check them out at www.iqcontent.com It was a big team that worked on it for thousands of hours (!!) and I will list all the names in the coming weeks, but today, I want to thank the Managing Director of iQ Content Morgan McKeagney and the Director of Innovation Ciarán Harris who was the main driver behind the project and who is an amazingly supportive and hard working individual who you can absolutely rely on.
If you like the app and want to join me in thanking iQ Content for all the work they did, send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the subject “THANKS IQ CONTENT” I will aggregate your thanks and will forward them.

Dublin Cake by La Torta Vita
La Torta Vita, a new company and the best Cake Designer in Dublin and probably in Ireland (Yes, I am a bit biased, but proove me wrong! :-) ), made a huge, wonderful and delicious Dublin Cake for the Dublin Event Guide to thank the people in iQ Content for all the work they did. The cake was a Dublin-themed cake with a big spire on it and with a whole selection of iconic Dublin buildings. You HAVE to see the cake (or the pictures of it!). Go to www.facebook.com/LaTortaVita to see the whole cake and to see some detail pictures. And if you like wht you see, LIKE La Torta Vita’s Facebook Page. All buildings were edible, even the Spire. How about chewing on Ha’Penny Bridge, or biting into Four Courts or having a nibble on the Aviva Stadium?? Check it out on www.facebook.com/LaTortaVita

Antenna by iQContent
Do you want to have such a wonderful event publishing environment as the Dublin Event Guide became? You can have that too! Because the software and systems are freely available that are making the Event Guide to the organised and good looking publication it now is. iQ Content has decided to make the whole system available to other programmers for free so that other organisations and people can build and create similar newsletters and apps like the Dublin Event Guide. Super idea! The product is called “Antenna”. Check it out on www.GetAntenna.com You need to know Cake PHP and need to be able to understand programming a bit, but after that it is easy.

I have some small technical problems with this section, so there will be a bit of a further delay, but the next company introductions will be here soon!
|
Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

100 Objects
23 Oct – 02 Dec
National Museum of Ireland – Decorative Arts & History, Collins Barracks, Dublin 7
Fintan O’Toole has chosen 99 remarkable objects, each of which opens a window on to an important moment in Irish history. You are invited to help choose the 100th object. Most come from the great trove of the National Museum of Ireland, a resource that is itself one of the wonders of Ireland. Others are from a variety of other institutions. They are not intended to be the 100 most remarkable objects on the island, or even to be a representative sample of the great collections. They are chosen simply for their ability to illuminate moments of change, development or crisis.
The exhibition in Collins Barracks shows the 10 items shortlisted to be the 100th object in the series. There is a public vote online (100objects.ie) and a ballot sheet in the Museum where you can help to choose which object defines our modern times.
Open: Tuesday-Saturday 10:00-17:00, Sunday 14:00-17:00. Closed Mondays and Bank Holidays

The exhibition will run from Friday until Monday. Tickets for Friday and Saturday are free if you pre-register on the website. On Sun+Mon the tickets are EUR 15 per person.
I quite like the show out of pure curiosity and did go regularly for the last few years, but since building, buying, renovating and extending homes became somewhat less popular, the show has suffered a bit.

Autumn Ideal Home Show
14:00 – 21:30, Sat 27 Oct
RDS, Simmonscourt Complex, Simmonscourt Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4
The Ideal Home Show is Ireland’s Biggest Exhibition for Home Owners, and while Home Extension & Renovation, Home Energy Advice and Interior Design Advice are corner stones of the show, you will also find interesting things there if you are just interested about homes and interior design or if you plan to be a home owner in the future.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 28 Oct
varies
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Every Sunday, free dance classes take place in the Grand Social (new loation!) and if you are interested, just turn up one Sunday.

Dublin Marathon
09:00 – 16:00, Mon 29 Oct
Dublin (various locations)
The 33rd Dublin Marathon is taking place on Bank Holiday Monday. It will start at 09:00 and the fastest runners take just over 2 hours, but the slow walkers have 7 hours to finish the course ( dublinmarathon.ie/general_course.php ) It starts in Fitzwilliam Street and goes onto Leeson Street and Stepehen’s Green from there. The finish after 42 km is at Merrion Square. Around 13,000 participants are expected but if you want to take part, you will have to wait until next year because registration is closed since 31 August.
The reason why I include it here is because it is a major spectacle in Dublin and you can cheer on the runners at lots of points throughout the city. If you plan to travel in Dublin on Monday, you better check the diversions, ( dublinmarathon.ie/general_course.php ) because traffic will be affected in many areas.
For many years the Marathon was supported by Adidas and Lifestyle Sports. In 2011 the National Lottery took over as a sponsor with a 3 year plan and many people and media outlets think that they are still supporting the event, but in May the National Lottery pulled out and for that reason there is no main sponsor this year and there will also be NO TV coverage of the event, not even highlights of the race. www.independent.ie/sport/other-sports/athletics-dublin-marathon-loses-sponsor-3096892.html

The Dublin Mountain Partnership is organising regular walks in the Dublin mountains. They always request pre-booking and the deadline for the pre-booking is usually well in advance of the event. November walks have not been announced yet, but if there is a walk on the second weekend, you will possibly have to have booked it before you get next week’s Dublin Event Guide. So if you are interested, check out www.dublinmountains.ie/news/latest_news/ and go to “Upcoming Events” before next Friday.

Our hard working TDs (Member of Parliament) had to recover from all the hard work during their summer holidays of just 8 (!!) weeks, which is – as we all agree – MUCH too short. When they came back on 18 Sept and got back into their normal work, it was soon clear that it could not continue like that. The stress was much too big, so after a very long working period of 5 WHOLE weeks, they quickly got together and agreed unanimously – something they RARELY do – to give themselves another week of holidays. What a useless shower of work-shy, overpaid gombeens!! The worst about it? That the whole “opposition”, even the socialists, independents and Sinn Fein who are normally opposing every single thing the other parties suggest, suddenly are more than happy to agree with the “enemy”. www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/tds-unite-to-give-themselves-a-weeks-holiday-571779.html

You are receiving this newsletter because you have subscribed to it!!
If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
