The Dublin International Short Film and Music Festival is an independent festival dedicated to bring together established musicians and filmmakers in one forum to celebrate the short films. DISFMF is for Short Films that are 15 minutes or less in length and musicians.

Sounds like an interesting event, but before I tell you about all the great things, I have to complain a little! The Programme in PDF comes back with an I/O error on two of my computers. Someone seemingly didn’t test it! And the Facebook Page is not a Facebook Page, but a Facebook Profile. That should be a total No No by now. To make things worse, you can’t see the information about the Festival on Facebook unless you become a friend. *shaking_head*

Now the good things: The festival doesn’t have a huge programme, but most of the programme elements are free and they look very interesting.

On Fri+Sat the venue is Merchant Arch, 48/49 Wellington Quay, Temple Bar, Dublin 2 and all events there are free. On Sun the Festival moves to the Sugar Club in Leeson Street, but then there is an admission charge of EUR 10.

The Codor Dojo is a brilliant event for children and teenagers to introduce them to programming (“Coding”). It takes place every week in the Science Gallery with the amazing amount of around 100 kids and teenagers. An amazing initiative founded by James Whelton and Bill Liao in 2011 it is growing and growing and provides a great opportunity to the programmers of tomorrow to playfully start in this field.

If you have interested kids, bring them to the Science Gallery on Saturdays (www.sciencegallery.com/events/2012/10/coder-dojo-free-coding-club). But if YOU are interested in coding yourself and have no programming experience, then here is the opportunity for you:

“Collision Harmonies – Glenn Branca’s Hallucinatory Aesthetic” is the title of a talk in the Project Arts Centre.

“Composer Brian Bridges will present a survey of Glenn Branca’s early guitar ensembles through to the harmonic series and non-harmonic series symphonies, discussing the ‘Downtown’ context and of Branca’s music and his significance to the new music scene. The talk will include audio examples, documentary footage and an informal opportunity to ask questions.”

This is a weekly Saturday night jazz event in the basement Wine Cave of KC Peaches wholefood restaurant/café. Food will be served until 22:00 and wine, minerals & music will be available until later. Admission is free and a donation into a hat at the end of the evening is appreciated.

Clockwork Orchestra is the Dublin based songwriter Paul Mangan. The three-piece live incarnation of the Clockwork Orchestra are currently touring and will perform a free gig at the Exchange Dublin. Paul Mangan describes his music cryptically this way “His idiosyncratic brand of melody driven music juxtaposes hyperactive synth riffs, melancholic piano balladry and psychedelic string arrangements together to conjure up a strange land of musical toys and colourful characters.” Sure, you have NO idea what the music is about after reading that, so I listened to some of the songs (check the Facebook Event Page for a link). The music is as unusual as his self-description, electronic music, but definitely listenable. But I strongly recommend to check the samples before you go to the gig.

Every Sunday, the Merrion Square Open Air Art Gallery takes place. Up to 200 artists exhibit their paintings on the railings on three sides (West, North and East) of Merrion Square and you can just enjoy the exhibition or even buy.

Miriam O’Callaghan, TV and radio presenter and broadcast journalist, will speak in the Trinity College Chapel on Sun. Her address is part of the ‘Soul Sisters’ series of addresses in which TCD Chaplain Revd Darren McCallig, and a number of invited speakers, will speak about the women who have inspired them. The address is during the Sunday morning Church of Ireland (Anglican) Choral Eucharist which begins at 10:45. All are welcome.

The Brocante Market will take place on Sun. It is a collection of antiques, furniture, vintage jewellery, collectables and curiosities from the past and present, second-hand, refurbished, antique and hand-crafted stuff for your house and garden. If you are an interior designer or just have and eye for style and are looking for a special piece or maybe a bargain then this is the market for you. The market is held every 3rd Sunday of the month.

The well known Palestrina Choir sing every Sunday at the mass in St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral. They sing complete masterworks by Mozart, Haydn, Dvorak, Palestrina, de Victoria, usually accompanied by Prof. Gerard Gillen on the organ, who often also plays a solo piece.

The Sundays at Noon Concert Series is back after the summer break and takes place again in the Sculpture Gallery at the Hugh Lane Gallery. Now in its 36th year, this series of free (mainly classical) concerts continues to present the best of Irish and International music and musicians. Concerts run from September to June. The next concert will feature the “Queen of Puddings Music Theatre”, which will present “Svadba – Wedding” by Ana Sokolovic. It is a virtuosic tour de force for six female opera singers, a cappella, and sung in Serbian.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Unlike the three branches of the National Museum, the National Print Museum is normally not free, but every Sunday there is a free public tour for the next few weeks. Every visit begins with a short audio-visual presentation where the audience can observe active retired printers providing practical demonstrations of machines from the Museum’s collection.

The next Sunday Sketching for 7+ Year olds has the title “Fabulous Fashions”. No booking necessary. Admission is free and early arrival is recommended.

In “Ear to the Edge of Time”, a contemporary radio astronomer faces a desperate crisis about gender politics, attribution, and the role of team work in 21st century science. The play deals with the fascinating machinations of astronomical physics, as well as the dilemmas, compromises and culture that are part of scientific discovery.

At the Samuel Beckett Theatre, leading Irish actors Simon Delaney, Rosaleen Linehan, Pauline McLynn, Hugh O’Conor, Lorcan Cranitch, Marcella Plunkett and Killian Scott will participate in a reading of “Ear to the Edge of Time”, winner of the STAGE International Script Competition for the best new play about science and technology. CRANN, the nanoscience institute at Trinity College Dublin hosts STAGE – Scientists, Technologists and Artists Generating Exploration – as part of City of Science 2012. Winning playwright Alana Valentine will be awarded her 10,000 Dollars prize in advance of the reading.

Meeting of the new scriptwriting (theatre and film) group for writers and actors. This meeting will feature read-throughs and performances of writers’ work by acting members, drama games, a scene study workshop and a CeltX tutorial!

The workshop is free and open to all.

This event is a little out of the ordinary, but a friend and supporter of the Dublin Event Guide is doing that, so want to support it. It is definitely a free event, but you don’t need to go anywhere…it is a radio drama.

The Silver Branch is a dramatic realisation of four Irish Mythological Tales: Fintan MacBochra, the first man of Ireland – a shaman and shape-shifter; Fionn Mac Cumhaill and The Salmon of Knowledge; Queen Maeve and the Brown Bull of Cooley and How the boy Setanta became Cú Chulainn. The stories are woven together by a fifth part – lyrical narration, dramatised by two voices; one male, and one female representing the Seanachaí. They invite us as the listener to become carriers of The Silver Branch ourselves, so that we in turn can continue to keep this oral tradition of Ireland’s history and folklore alive.

The Gardiner Street Gospel Choir Mass invites to a Mass in St. Francis Xavier Church at the top of Gardiner Street near the junction with Dorset Street every Sunday at 19:30. The Gardiner Street Gospel Choir, one of the best known choirs in Ireland will sing during the mass and everybody is welcome independent from your level of religiousness.

Exchange Focus is a collective photography group. They act as a forum and meeting point for Dublin photographers to share techniques and collaborate on projects and they regularly exhibit their work and run free workshops in all aspects of photography. The Comedy Crunch is a free Stand Up comedy downstairs in Stag’s Head, Dame Lane from 21:00 every week on Sun+Mon. “Rhythm Rocker at The Globe” is a weekly event on Sunday night in The Globe in Sth Great Georges Street, Dublin 2. It is a Rockabilly, R’n’R, Roots night with alternating (week by week) live bands Pavement Kings, Donna & The Sazzy Catz, The Mosquitoes and The Pacifics from 21:00 and with DJs from 23:00-01:30. “This event is to announce the official programme of literary and cinematic events, walking tours, exhibitions, presentations, talks etc, in this annual HorrorsFest which, from the last week of October onwards, will celebrate the Gothic horror genre in literature, film, theatre and other art forms with spec;ial focus on the literary works of Sheridan LeFanu, Bram Stoker, Charles Maturin and other.
Events in the festival will include a “Gothic literary ramble” (a walking tour of relevant literary landmarks around the city centre); screenings of Irish films (mainly shorts) connected to the theme of horror; readings from gothic stories.

UCD alumnus Seán Clancy (Birmingham Conservatoire) continues the seminar series “Composing Today” in the UCD School of Music. This series will investigate the aesthetic, technical, logistical and practical challenges composers face in the early 21st century.

The yearly Dragons’ Den of Mental Health will take place next Tuesday in TCD. “The layout of the event is simple. There will be five panelists, all coming from mental health backgrounds, who openly discuss the objectives of their organisations and provide any insights they have accrued through their experience. They will be asked to discuss how the mental health of Irish young people has been acknowledged and how its treatment has progressed in recent years. Audience members will be free to ask questions and get involved in the discussion throughout.”.

This UCD Innovation/Innovation Dublin event sounds intriguing and very interesting. It is a Workshop entitled “Come with a pencil, leave with a start-up idea”.
The goal will not be to talk much about products design or billion dollar ideas. Instead, the goal is for you to leave with an idea which isn’t simply “good”, but is something you are actually in a position to make happen by building on these three strengths:

You’re able to start on your idea, today, with the resources you already have.
You have a natural unfair advantage because the idea is seeded with the things you care about and are good at.
You’ll like running your company enough to be able to weather the unavoidable (and often fatal) grind which hits every start-up at some point.

The “Havana International Language Exchange” is taking place every Wed from 16:30-19:30 in Havana Tapas Bar in George’s Street. A series of four screenings of Argentinian Films will take place on the next four Wednesdays. The launch event will be on Wed 10 Oct and will start at 18:00. This will be followed by the screening of the first film. All films are in Spanish with English subtitles and admission is free.

“Stop Look Listen” is the dlr Youth Arts Festival and it will run from 25 Oct – 03 Nov. It celebrates creative work by young people from all over Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County and is organised by the Grainstore, dlr’s Youth Arts Facility.

This lecture is the second of a new monthly lecture series entitled ‘BiblioFiles’. The lectures will provide a platform for writers, academics and others who have used the NLI’s facilities to talk about the research and other work they have carried out here.

Dr Enda Delaney author of “The Curse of Reason: The Great Irish Famine 1845-52” will share with you an insight into his research on the Elizabeth Smith papers held in the NLI, which provide a contemporary account of conditions in Wicklow during the Great Famine.

The Ferocious Mingle Market takes place every Thursday, Friday, Saturday AND Sunday. On Sunday it is a fancy dress market. It’s a flea-market type permanent market with stalls and “chalets” for traders. The Oscar Verne Café and (at least at the weekends) live music adds even more character.

The Contemporary Music Centre’s new music::new Ireland salon series resumes on Thursday with a concert by cellist Martin Johnson which will feature two world premieres.

Johnson will give the first performances of “Snapshot” for solo cello by Frank Corcoran (b.1944) and “…as if nothing had happened for cello and electronics” by Rhona Clarke (b.1958). Completing the programme is “Five Hofer Photographs” by David Fennessy (b.1976). Now in its ninth season, the Contemporary Music Centre’s new music::new Ireland salon series encourages newcomers and enthusiasts to engage with the music of Irish composers. Each performance takes place in an informal atmosphere with dialogue encouraged between composers, performers and audience.

The Dublin Writers’ Forum welcomes writers of all genres, of all ages and all levels of experience. DWF is an open group of writers who share a common passion for all things literary. It is a safe ‘working space’ where on a weekly basis writers can bring their work to be critiqued by other writers.

This October Bank Holiday Weekend, Dublin City will celebrate the life, work and legacy of Irish horror novelist Bram Stoker and his gothic novel ‘Dracula’.

The three-day festival will bring you back to Stoker’s Dublin and there will be walking tours through the lane-ways and hidden steps of the Victorian macabre of the city; literary workshops exploring horror writing with award winning authors for both teens and adults; Stoker-themed theatre, discussions on all things vampire, and a highlight being an evening of spooky spectacle from renowned street theatre company Spraoi in the grounds of Dublin Castle.

Some events are free, others are not, so you should have a look at the website to see what interests you. Some events need(ed) pre-booking and most are booked out already, but have a a look at the website and you will find all details.

This is a Focus Ireland Open Day to showcase arts&crafts, live music and other activities. Volunteers are welcome.

The Innovation Dublin Festival will take place from 15-26 Oct, it is a collection of events that have a common theme, which is Innovation in Dublin, but are not necessarily linked in any other way. Many events are free, others are not. Some are booked out already (e.g. the Dublin Talks), others will book out really fast. I recommend that you have a look at the programme at www.innovationdublin.ie/festival/2012/event_listing/ and check if you wan to pre-book anything. Unfortunately the website does not clearly specify if an event is free or not, so you might have to do a bit of searching before you can be certain.

If you have an idea for a new business or if you have recently started and have questions about the idea or the new start-up, you can get 30min with a mentor from the Dublin City Enterprise Board for free. Even if you are established and need help for the next steps there is help available. On Friday the Your Business Day takes place and lots of Mentor Sessions are provided. In context with Innovation Dublin, Robert Farrell will talk about ‘Winning at Negotiation’. The presentation is designed for both the public and business communities. It gives an introduction to negotiation, how to prepare for a negotiation, the negotiation process and traps to avoid.

Admission is free and booking is not required.

A Fiction Writing Workshop will take place as part of the “Stop Look Listen” Festival, the dlr Youth Arts Festival from 25 Oct – 03 Nov. Chris Binchy will run the workshop and booking is required by ringing Mary on 01-2047978 or sending an e-mail to grainstore@dlrcoco.ie Admission is free.

The workshop is focusing on themes explored in the exhibition “Out of the doors and in or into the open air”. Particularly, the idea of new beginnings, new starts and setting out on new adventures.

Writer and director Gerard Stembridge, who wrote the screenplay for Ordinary Decent Criminal (starring Kevin Spacey Linda Fiorentino) and co-wrote Nora, a film about James Joyce and Nora Barnacle Starring Ewan McGregor and Susan Lynch has directed the films Guiltrip, Black Day at Black Rock, Alarm and About Adam. On Friday he will read from his third novel “Unspoken”.

The Ideal Home Show is Ireland’s Biggest Exhibition for Home Owners, and while Home Extension & Renovation, Home Energy Advice and Interior Design Advice are corner stones of the show, you will also find interesting things there if you are just interested about homes and interior design or if you plan to be a home owner in the future.

The exhibition will run from Friday until Monday. Tickets for Friday and Saturday are free if you pre-register on the website. On Sun+Mon the tickets are EUR 15 per person.

I quite like the show out of pure curiosity and did go regularly for the last few years, but since building, buying, renovating and extending homes became somewhat less popular, the show has suffered a bit.

The Dublin Sidewalk Astronomers will meet at the Martello tower car park in Sandymount to observe the first quarter Moon.

A talk by Jeronimo Utrilla about the “History of Flamenco” will take place in context with the Dublin Flamenco Festival. Admission is free, but a donation of EUR 5 is suggested.

A Halloween Film Night at the Arts Technology Research Lab will feature a screening of Carl Theodor Dreyer’s Vampyr (1932) with a live and reinterpreted soundtrack performed by Aidan Delaney. Admission is free.

The Left Right & Centre play renditions and tributes to the music of the greats such as the great Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, Leadbelly and all the Kings, Freddie, Albert and BB. The band comprises of Ed Deane on Guitar, John Quearney on Bass and Noel Bridgeman on drums. Admission is free.

The Urban Mojo Blues Band will be in Mother Reilly’s this Friday.
