Honoring Women’s Legacy

International Women’s Day, Bohemian Flea Market, Seachtain na Gaeilge, National Tree Week

Hi!!

This Saturday (08 March) marks International Women’s Day, a global occasion to reflect on the incredible achievements of women throughout history and across the world. In Dublin, this day offers a special opportunity to celebrate the trailblazing women who have left an indelible mark on our city, our country and beyond. From writers and activists to leaders and innovators, Irish women have long been at the forefront of shaping culture, society and progress.

So let’s take a moment to remember some of the remarkable women in Irish history. Figures like Countess Constance Markievicz, the first woman elected to the British Parliament, who was also a key figure in the 1916 Rising;

Mary Robinson, who made history as Ireland’s first female president and later as a global advocate for human rights; Sister Stanislaus Kennedy, whose work in social justice has improved the lives of countless people in Ireland, and Mary Mulvihill, who I had the pleasure to meet and talk about events in Dublin, a science writer and broadcaster who passionately advocated for women in STEM. Mary, who passed away in 2013, dedicated much of her life to making science and mathematics accessible to all, especially inspiring young women to pursue careers in these fields.

These women, among MANY others, paved the way for greater equality and continue to inspire new generations of Irish women to break barriers and lead change.

This week’s Dublin Event Guide brings you a wide array of free cultural events across the city, offering the perfect chance to explore Ireland’s rich history of female empowerment, through art, music, literature or discussions. Dublin’s vibrant cultural scene is alive with the spirit of women’s voices – past and present. International Women’s Day is a reminder that the fight for equality is ongoing and Dublin’s free events provide meaningful opportunities to learn, reflect and be inspired.

So, as you celebrate The International Women’s Day, take some time to explore Dublin’s diverse offerings, connect with the stories of women who have shaped our world  and reflect on how far we’ve come – while looking forward to how much further we can go!

If you have friends or family or colleagues that also enjoy cultural events in Dublin, let them know that they can sign up for the free weekly Dublin Event Guide newsletter at getthislink.com/DEGSignup

The working title for my video series on YouTube is the “Better You” videos, they are all about 5 minute long about how to better your life. Last week’s video was about all the people that were needed to ensure that you can be alive now. Check it out the video series if you know that you could really achieve more than what you have achieved in life yet and if you need a bit of support to achieve your best self. www.youtube.com/@JoergSteegmueller

Donations in March:
EUR 144

(By the end of the month, this number has to reach or exceed EUR 200 to guarantee the continuation of the Dublin Event Guide.)

If the Dublin Event Guide helps you to find out about free events in Dublin, please help with a donation.

The counter here shows the current donation status. By the end of the month EUR 200 will be subtracted to pay the bills. If more money has been donated, the rest will be carried forward. If donations have stopped below the EUR 200, the missing amount will be carried over.

Wow! After we were briefly in the minus, this week a whole bunch of wonderful people came together. Thanks to Cathal, Olga, William, Maria, Silvia, Sabrina, Carol, Shane, EImear and Stephen who donated to the Dublin Event Guide. Thanks a lot. Your contribution is much appreciated.

And there is more…

+++ St Patrick’s Festival 2025
St. Patrick’s day is around the corner! This year’s Festival will run from 15-17 March from Saturday until Monday. The St. Patrick’s Day Parade will be on Monday from 12:00 along the usual route  and all details are here stpatricksfestival.ie/events/parade
After the parade, the popular Ceili Mor, a traditional Irish dance, language and music event will take place from 14:00-17:00 on Merrion Square West (stpatricksfestival.ie/events/ceili).
Another great and popular event will be the “Dublin City Council St. Patrick’s Festival Treasure Hunt”, a treasure hunt through Dublin that takes approx. 2 hours from 10:00-12:00. Enter via this page and find all information: stpatricksfestival.ie/events/treasure-hunt
The best about the St. Patrick’s Festival this year are the huge amount of events that take place on Sat (15 March) and on Sunday (16 March) throughout the city. The venues are Outside the Chester Beatty Museum, at Wood Quay Amphitheatre, Wolfe Tone Square, Hugh Lane Gallery, Capel Street, Barnardo Square, St. Patrick’s Park and St. Stephen’s Green and the full schedule is here stpatricksfestival.ie/content/images/Citywide-Event-Schedule-2025.png So no relatively FAR out of city events at Collins Barracks and no events at Dublin Castle this year. Instead a huge amount of day time events in the 8 locations listed above.
ALL details for all events are here www.stpatricksfestival.ie

+++ Dublin City Council Culture Company
Every week, the Dublin City Council Culture Company organises cultural events in venues in Dublin. They are events in addition to the normal events in museums, galleries and other venues. All events are free, but access is by registration only. And these events are POPULAR!! So when I get to checking them out on the Friday before they take place, the most interesting ones are usually already booked out. If you are interested, check them out here cultureclubdublin.ticketsolve.com/ticketbooth/shows (This week you only see a few, because every month a new batch is uploaded not in a rolling way, but in a month by month way.)

+++ LEARN A NEW SKILL WITH ONLINE COURSES
Is there ever a wrong time for learning a new skill or enhancing what you are already interested in? Maybe it is a language or an instrument or some technical skills? Or something completely different? Nearly every subject is there! Check out Udemy via the link below, they have thousands of courses and there is good chance that what you are looking for is available. Nearly all the courses are REALLY affordable!
The lowest price most of the time is EUR 12.99. Sometimes it even goes down further to EUR 9.99 and when that happens (about once or twice a year), I will tell you. But even 12.99 is definitely a good price for what you get! – Check out the website at www.getthislink.com/Udemy22 And if you buy through that link, you also help the Dublin Event Guide! :-)

+++ IKEA Crafting / Music / Cooking Workshops
Ikea in Ballymun runs a variety of crafting, music and cooking workshops it is always worh checking out. The workshops are free and usually go for 45 minutes. They are always for children, but the age is often not fixed. There are specific Toddler and baby workshops at times as well. Check them out on www.ikea.com/ie/en/stores/events/ikea-ballymun/
