Dublin Event Guide 876: Last weekend before school – Funtropolis, Heritage Week, India Day

August 17th, 2024

Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)

Last weekend before school

Funtropolis, Heritage Week, India Day

Hi!!

The good times are nearly over for people that need to drive to work. On Wednesday (I think!) school will be back and that means that traffic will be crazy again after wonderful near-empty streets for the last few weeks.

I work in an office for a few days every week and my mid-summer travel time is just 25 minutes (no public transport available). But as soon as school starts again, this will increase to 1 hour and even up to 1.5 hours. MAD! Who can explain this to me?

It can’t be caused by teachers. And I don’t think that ALL parents stay at home throughout summer and ALL go back to work when school restarts. So then it can only be caused by all the parents bringing their offsprings to school!? I know, I am showing my age now ;-), but when I grew up we walked, cycled or took the bus to school.

Luckily the weekends will still be quieter and most events take place at weekends. So let’s make the most of it!

From this Saturday until next Sunday National Heritage Week takes place in Ireland and there are LOTS of events in and around Dublin and throughout whole Ireland. Imagine, I counted 332 free events in the greater Dublin area! Unfortunately that is so many events that I can’t include them in the Dublin Event Guide. Instead I have to send you to this customised website www.getthislink.com/HeritageWeekDublin2024 I have it configured so that it only shows events in the four districts of County Dublin. It shows all 356 events, but if you click on “Filter by County and Type” you can add the filter “Free” in Event Type to get the free events only.

Donations in August:
EUR 166

(By the end of the month, this number has to reach or exceed EUR 200 to guarantee the continuation of the Dublin Event Guide.)

If the Dublin Event Guide helps you to find out about free events in Dublin, please help with a donation.

The counter here shows the current donation status. By the end of the month EUR 200 will be subtracted to pay the bills. If more money has been donated, the rest will be carried forward. If donations have stopped below the EUR 200, the missing amount will be carried over.

Last week Geraldine, Frank and Felix helped with a donation. Thank you so much! These donations keep the Dublin Event Guide alive and it is truly a wonderful group of people who help keeping the Dublin Event Guide going. Join this exclusive group!

With the above counter you know at all times where we stand and when donating is needed. Donations keep the Dublin Event Guide alive and all donors will also get some additional bonuses.

Here are some more details about donations:
Any amount is appreciated, but if you are looking for a recommendation, then I suggest a donation of 12 Euro per year. – That’s just one Euro per month and you get FOUR Dublin Event Guides for that Euro! If your funds are limited, but you still want to help, you can buy a virtual coffee for just EUR 4. All donations will be used in full for the Dublin Event Guide.

To donate, use the Dublin Event Guide Donation Page here: gturl.eu/DEGdonate. It is really easy to use and uses Stripe’s trustworthy payment processing. You can even sign up for a yearly subscription on the donation page! Yearly subscriptions will give some important financial stability and reliability to the Dublin Event Guide and are therefore very much appreciated! (Look for the RED subscription buttons at the bottom of the Donation Page.)

In case the donation page doesn’t work for you, the old links are here: You can donate via www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide or for Revolut users among you, just use @joergbrb or now also revolut.me/joergbrb
(If possible, please send your full name and e-mail address as a message with the payment via PayPal or Revolut so that I can tell you about bonuses for donors when available.)

To buy one or two or even three virtual coffees for the Dublin Event Guide, come to the “Buy Me a Coffee” page here www.buymeacoffee.com/DublinEventG

And there is one other way to help and it is even free: If you come to www.DublinEventGuide.com and check out some of the ads and click on the ones that you find interesting, that also helps with a few cent! ?

Thank you!!

And there is more…

+++ Funtropolis by Dublin City Council
Funtropolis is free Family Fun and this weekend on 17+18 August, the second event will take place in Mountjoy Square. There will be street theatre, music and dance, comedy & food stalls for the whole family. In a way it is a replacement of what was initially the Street Performance World Championships and later the City Spectacular. Funtropolis is not on a same high level as these other prior events, but it is as close as it gets. dublin.ie/whats-on/listings/funtropolis/

Some of the performers and events are Mark the Science Guy, Joe the Magician, Scientific Sue’s Magical Science and Engineering Show Generation POUND (kid-friendly choreography and group activities), Cikadas Circus, comedy with “Those Two Idiots” street theatre by AU-ADHD artist Moss Russell, samba at the Ta Tum Tum music show.  There will also the Morbid & Sons show, music at Pstryk, an interactive musical experience designed especially for children aged 3-10 years, Changemakers Storytelling, a family friendly interactive storytelling session with singing, dancing and mindfulness.
And on the music stage Code of Behaviour will create a pop, jazz and overall party atmosphere. DJ Will Softly & The Bubble Gang, along with The African Gospel Choir, Go Dance for Change and others will perform. There will be a DCC Sports and Wellbeing Zone and the mobile library will be on site. The Dublin City Council outdoor mobile child sensory unit will be available for use for anyone who identifies as neurodiverse.
And you think that is not enough yet? There is more:
The Story Yurt, with a Teddy Bears Picnic Singalong and instrument time, family music sessions, Óga Yoga, the Cosmic Movers Space Themed Dance workshop with Jess Rowell, the Three Little Pigs Puppet Show
The Bubble Guys will create huge bubbles, GOMBA & Rhythm AFRICANA will use traditional African styles of music and rhythm, a Dublin Art Class for children aged 8–12 and a Mobile Music School will run music workshops exploring the world of music-making.
Uff, that is a lot! It will be a busy day full of activities and entertainment. Don’t miss Funtropolis!
(I wrote this long explanation above for the first event in Merrion Suqare. There could be some changes for the second event. Check the website listed above.)

+++ NATIONAL HERITAGE WEEK
From Sat 17 August until Sunday 25 August the National Heritage Week will take place in Ireland. There will be more than 300 events in Dublin and you will be able to find them all via this link www.getthislink.com/HeritageWeekDublin2024 Out of the 304 events, 282 are free, so you should find something interesting among them. I will list a few in next week’s Dublin Event Guide, but since there are sooo many events, this will be a tiny fraction of all events. So I recommend that you have a look at the events list via the link above and plan your Heritage Week events already- Because many events require booking, this makes a lot of sense. ;-)

+++ LEARN A NEW SKILL WITH ONLINE COURSES
Is there ever a wrong time for learning a new skill or enhancing what you are already interested in? Maybe it is a language or an instrument or some technical skills? Or something completely different? Nearly every subject is there! Check out Udemy via the link below, they have thousands of courses and there is good chance that what you are looking for is available. Nearly all the courses are REALLY affordable!
The lowest price most of the time is EUR 12.99. Sometimes it even goes down further to EUR 9.99 and when that happens (about once or twice a year), I will tell you. But even 12.99 is definitely a good price for what you get! – Check out the website at www.getthislink.com/Udemy22 And if you buy through that link, you also help the Dublin Event Guide! :-)

+++ NEXT weekend: Trad Music, Ukuleles and Lobster
Next weekend three free high profile events will take place- ON Smithfield Plaza the “Dublin City Council Smithfield Fleadh” will bring you trad music. The Ukulele Hooley in Dun Laoghaire will – you guessed it – bring you Ukulele music. And the Dalkey Lobster Festival will bring lots of music AND food.
