Dublin’s Architecture

Open House Dublin, Dublin History Festival, Redline Book Festival

Hi!!

This Saturday and Sunday Open House Dublin takes place. Open House Dublin is organised by the Irish Architecture Foundation and it therefore focuses on architecture in Dublin. I compared it to  “Culture Night” for architecture before, because for two days many buildings in Dublin will be open for you to see and understand and these buildings are normally not accessible. At the buildings architects will explain during guided tours what the architects who created the building thought when planing it.

It is a fascinating event and I learned a huge amount at previous Open House events. I visited Busaras, Liberty Hall, Dublin Airport, Department of Foreign Affairs, Criminal Court of Justice, Dr. Stephens’ Hospital, Airbnb Office, Conference Centre Dublin, former Central Bank and many many other buildings and often saw the “other side” of it through the eyes of the architect. Liberty Happ and Busaras are perfect examples. Two buildings that are often seen as not very attractive, but that reveal a hidden beauty when you understand what the original thinking was.

This year a lot of buildings had to be pre-booked which takes a little away from the original idea of the Open House Dublin event. But there are still some Walk-in tours in locations like the Criminal Court of Justice, Marsh’s Library, the Irish Architectural Archive, Mansion House, Farmleigh House and St. Audeon’s Church. So give “Open House Dublin” a go and learn more about the hidden treasures of our city!

Please note that to get a full list of what is happening, you need to go to openhousedublin.com/ and then click on a HEADLINE (e.g. Building Tours or Outdoor Tours etc) if you click on the menu option “Whats On” you will NOT get a complete list!

I confused you last week by mentioning by accident TWO dates for the next free “Introduction to AI and ChatGPT” class. Apologies! It will now happen this coming Wednesday 18 Oct from 19:30-21:30. It will be full of new and exciting content and even if you attended the last class, you could (and should) attend again! So much has changed even in the last two months that you won’t regret it!

I only have 100 seats and there are 220 people on the list of interested people. Because it is a free event, I won’t upgrade my Zoom license. So be early to grab a space. “Doors” will open at 19:15 and the class will start at 19:30.

The 2-hour class “Introduction to AI and ChatGPT” will give you an overview of what is important to know in the area of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and will give you an introduction to ChatGPT. You do NOT have ANY technical background, but all will be explained so that everyone will understand it. The event will be online via Zoom and the very last chance to let me know that you are interested is on Sunday until midnight. Use this link www.getthislink.com/AIclass2

Donations in October:
EUR 162

(By the end of the month, this number has to reach or exceed EUR 200 to guarantee the continuation of the Dublin Event Guide.)

If the Dublin Event Guide helps you to find out about free events in Dublin, please help with a donation.

The counter here shows the current donation status. By the end of the month EUR 200 will be subtracted to pay the bills. If more money has been donated, the rest will be carried forward. If donations have stopped below the EUR 200, the missing amount will be carried over.

Last week, the only wonderful people helping with donations were Varvara, Fernanda, Carija. Thank you very much! Your help is much appreciated and is making a difference. Without it, the Dublin Event Guide can not survive.

A new month has started and things are not looking bad with a carry over from last month of EUR 45, but your help to reach the EUR 200 is much appreciated and the sooner we reach it, the sooner I can stop worrying about it. ;-)

With the above counter you know at all times where we stand and when donating is needed. Donations keep the Dublin Event Guide alive and all donors will also get some additional bonuses.

Here are some more details about donations:
Any amount is appreciated, but if you are looking for a recommendation, then I suggest a donation of 12 Euro per year. – That’s just one Euro per month and you get FOUR Dublin Event Guides for that Euro! If your funds are limited, but you still want to help, you can buy a virtual coffee for just EUR 4. All donations will be used in full for the Dublin Event Guide.

To donate, use the Dublin Event Guide Donation Page here: gturl.eu/DEGdonate. It is really easy to use and uses Stripe’s trustworthy payment processing. You can even sign up for a yearly subscription on the donation page! Yearly subscriptions will give some important financial stability and reliability to the Dublin Event Guide and are therefore very much appreciated! (Look for the RED subscription buttons at the bottom of the Donation Page.)

In case the donation page doesn’t work for you, the old links are here: You can donate via www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide or for Revolut users among you, just use @joergbrb or now also revolut.me/joergbrb
(If possible, please send your full name and e-mail address as a message with the payment via PayPal or Revolut so that I can tell you about bonuses for donors when available.)

To buy one or two or even three virtual coffees for the Dublin Event Guide, come to the “Buy Me a Coffee” page here www.buymeacoffee.com/DublinEventG

And there is one other way to help and it is even free: If you come to www.DublinEventGuide.com and check out some of the ads and click on the ones that you find interesting, that also helps with a few cent! ?

Thank you!!

+++ Ghosts, Ghouls and “Goodie Glover Day” – The Irish Origins of Halloween
28/29/31/31 Oct – 16:00 – EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum, chq Building, Customs House Quay, Dublin 1 – Adm: EUR 22/14.50

Halloween is fast approaching and it’s time to delve back in the origins of Irish traditions and explore how Samhain became Halloween. Irish ghost stories and funerary traditions travelled with the Irish diaspora and often became entangled with local customs to form entirely new traditions over the centuries.
Learn more about The Dullahan (“dark man”) a malevolent harbinger of death who served as the inspiration for the headless horseman of Sleepy Hollow, or how the local practice of burying corpses with a stake through the heart influenced the writings of Irish emigrant Bram Stoker, author of Dracula.
Uncover the tragic story of “Goody Annie Glover” the unfortunate Irish woman who became the last person hanged for witchcraft in Boston in 1688 and how the influx of Irish immigrants, who brought their traditions and folktales, helped shape the story of jack-o’-lanterns in America.
The ticket for this tour includes entry to EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum and the bespoke tour.
