Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)

No RTE mess here!

Lots of events: Flavours of Fingal, Coastival, Atmosphere (Kite Festival), Ballyfermot Cherry Orchard Festival

Hi!!

Because this Dublin Event Guide is soo late again, just ignore it completely today, but check it out for Sunday and weekday events. LOTS happening.

The RTE affair/scandal/mess is currently dominating media in Ireland. If you follow it, you don’t need my interpretation. But if you don’t follow it and maybe even have never even heard about it, let me suggest the following summary (full of omissions and simplifications!):

RTE is the public TV and radio station in Ireland and they have a high-profile weekly chat show that is called “The Late Late Show”. Anybody who grew up in Ireland, or has Irish family (wife, husband, partner) will DEFINITELY know about the Late Late Show. It is an INSTITUTION!

If neither applies to you (grew up or family), then there is a good chance that you never heard of it and if you watched it, you wouldn’t even find it interesting in the SLIGHTEST.

The presenter of that show, Ryan Turbridy, stepped down very recently and now suddenly it emerges that he got more money than RTE officially had told the public (and the Dail). Because they are the public broadcaster (and you pay for it with your TV licence fee), they need to tell the Dail how much they pay their people. But Turbridy got around 325k more over the last few years than was declared.

BIG embarrassment for RTE and LOT of questions are raised about this dishonesty. There is a good chance that nothing illegal was done, but if your yearly EUR 160 TV licence fee pays for something, you should be allowed to know what it is used for.

In all honesty, the dodgyness that is found in RTE is not at all surprising and many companies use “creative accounting” to be a little (or a lot) less honest than they should be. So on one hand, not a HUGE surprise. But should RTE get your EUR 160 or is it time to get rid of the TV license? (Our politicians even wanted to turn it into a household license that is independent from owning a TV before this RTE affair! :-o )

Good news?? ;-) NO creative accounting is used at the Dublin Event Guide! All your donations directly go into paying the bills. So please help as much as you can. (BTW: Tubridy didn’t send any of the 325k to me. :-o )

Donations in July:
EUR 14

(By the end of the month, this number has to reach or exceed EUR 200 to guarantee the continuation of the Dublin Event Guide.)

If the Dublin Event Guide helps you to find out about free events in Dublin, please help with a donation.

The counter here shows the current donation status. By the end of the month EUR 200 will be subtracted to pay the bills. If more money has been donated, the rest will be carried forward. If donations have stopped below the EUR 200, the missing amount will be carried over.

Thank you soo much for helping again this week! This week the following wonderful people donated: Fernanda, Miriam, Vera! Thank you! :-) Your donation will keep the Dublin Event Guide alive and will motivate me to continue week after week. I appreciate you and your support!

With the above counter you know at all times where we stand and when donating is needed. Donations keep the Dublin Event Guide alive and all donors will also get some additional bonuses.

Here are some more details about donations:
Any amount is appreciated, but if you are looking for a recommendation, then I suggest a donation of 12 Euro per year. – That’s just one Euro per month and you get FOUR Dublin Event Guides for that Euro! If your funds are limited, but you still want to help, you can buy a virtual coffee for just EUR 4. All donations will be used in full for the Dublin Event Guide.

To donate, use the Dublin Event Guide Donation Page here: gturl.eu/DEGdonate. It is really easy to use and uses Stripe’s trustworthy payment processing. You can even sign up for a yearly subscription on the donation page! Yearly subscriptions will give some important financial stability and reliability to the Dublin Event Guide and are therefore very much appreciated! (Look for the RED subscription buttons at the bottom of the Donation Page.)

In case the donation page doesn’t work for you, the old links are here: You can donate via www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide or for Revolut users among you, just use @joergbrb or now also revolut.me/joergbrb
(If possible, please send your full name and e-mail address as a message with the payment via PayPal or Revolut so that I can tell you about bonuses for donors when available.)

To buy one or two or even three virtual coffees for the Dublin Event Guide, come to the “Buy Me a Coffee” page here www.buymeacoffee.com/DublinEventG

And there is one other way to help and it is even free: If you come to www.DublinEventGuide.com and check out some of the ads and click on the ones that you find interesting, that also helps with a few cent! ?

Thank you!!

And there is more…

+++ Flavours of Fingal County Show
This is a yearly agricultural show and family and food event with over 80,000 visitors! A HUGE event in Fingal. There will be Family Fun, Wellness, Food, Live Music and Dancing Workshops next to Horiculture and Agricultural and everything about Farming.
Admission is free, but don’t even think about driving there. Car parking is crazily expensive to keep cars away. The alternative is the use of one of many shuttle buses where the return ticket costs just EUR 1.50. A list is on the website.
I never made it to Newbridge Demesne, which is near Donabate, north of Swords, but the event looks great! Two days (Sat and Sun) from 11:00-18:00. If you make it, let me know how it was! flavoursoffingal.ie/

+++ Dublin City Council nails Social Media!
On Wed 28 June, Dublin City Council proved that they have the expertise, the right people to implement it and the outstanding content to win the social media game!
Check out this: www.joergsteegmueller.com/2023/06/30/dublin-city-on-top-of-the-social-media-game/

+++ LEARN A NEW SKILL WITH ONLINE COURSES
Is there ever a wrong time for learning a new skill or enhancing what you are already interested in? Maybe it is a language or an instrument or some technical skills? Or something completely different? Nearly every subject is there! Check out Udemy via the link below, they have thousands of courses and there is good chance that what you are looking for is available. Nearly all the courses are REALLY affordable!
The lowest price most of the time is EUR 12.99. Sometimes it even goes down further to EUR 9.99 and when that happens (about once or twice a year), I will tell you. But even 12.99 is definitely a good price for what you get! – Check out the website at www.getthislink.com/Udemy22 And if you buy through that link, you also help the Dublin Event Guide! :-)

+++ Coastival Dun Laoghaire
Coastival 2023 will run from 01-09 July and will celebrate Dun Laoghaire. The week-long festival will coincide with the Volvo Dún Laoghaire Regatta and include lots of events each day both on land and water. In addition to a whole range of free events, there will also be the Coastival Nights, which are live gigs and comedy. The Coastival Nights that were free are all sold out. For many of the non-free events tickets are still available at coastivalnights.ie/
This Dublin Event Guide has lots (nearly all) of the free events included, but have a look yourself at www.dlrcoco.ie/dlr-events/event/coastival for the whole list. (Scroll to the bottom of the page to find 96 event listings.)

+++ Parliament Street pedestrianised on weekends
Dublin City announced that Parliament Street (from City Hall to the Liffey) will be closed for traffic every Saturday and Sunday from 01 July until late August. To celebrate this and to get people to use the street, there will be some music and entertainment on Saturday and Sunday from 13:00-18:00. www.dublincity.ie/news/parliament-street-traffic-free-weekends-begins-saturday

+++ Nautical Star Compass – 3d Street Art
From 01-09 July Dun Laoghaire will have 3D Street Artists decorating the East Pier in Dun Laoghaire with optical illusions. The “exhibition” is called “Nautical Star Compass” and will be available 24hrs. www.dlrcoco.ie/dlr-events/event/nautical-star-compass

+++ Ballyfermot Cherry Orchard Festival
There are lots of events planned for this festival, but it isn’t made tooo easy to find out about the events. There is a Facebook page, but the nice and shiny event programme is only posted there as a set of photos and you find it only if you search for a LONG time (or if you are a Dublin Event Guide reader :-) ). The programme is at www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=578243181183616
