Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)

Dublin is Phizzing, Biking, D8Culturing & more!

Culture Date with Dublin 8, Phizzfest, Bike Week, Harold’s Cross Community Festival, Comic Book Festival

Hi!!

Last week I asked a question about your interest in weekday events vs. weekend events. I had gotten the impression that most of you don’t really care much about weekday events anymore. Because weekday events are the main work (and delay!) when preparing the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”, I needed to check if I should maybe drop or reduce weekday events.

Not a lot of people answered that question (Is that a message in itself?), but of the ones that did answer, 29% said they are ONLY interested in weekend events. 27% are mainly interested in weekend events. 23% are interested in both 50:50. Only 21% are very interested in weekday events. So 56% possibly wouldn’t mind if weekend events were reduced. But with a sizeable 44% not being in favour of reducing weekday events, I will have to rethink that again. Thanks for replying!

This weekend is a super busy one with lots events and next weekend will also be packed.The temperatures are very slowly rising, but it a surprisingly slow increase this year. (On Monday night the forecast is for a drop to just 6 degrees again. In the middle of May!)

Either way, the outdoor season has started and that means there will be more events. This weekend Phizzfest, Harold’s Cross Community Festival, the Culture Date with Dublin 8, Bike Week and an International Padel Tournament in Bushy Park will take place. That IS busy!

Donations in May:
EUR 176

(By the end of the month, this number has to reach or exceed EUR 200 to guarantee the continuation of the Dublin Event Guide.)

If the Dublin Event Guide helps you to find out about free events in Dublin, please help with a donation.

The counter here shows the current donation status. By the end of the month EUR 200 will be subtracted to pay the bills. If more money has been donated, the rest will be carried forward. If donations have stopped below the EUR 200, the missing amount will be carried over.

Thank you soo much for helping again this week! The great people who donated were Angela and Jospeh. Thank you! :-) Your donation will keep the Dublin Event Guide alive and will motivate me to continue week after week.I appreciate you and your support!

The 800th anniversary donations in March were EUR 250 and for now, I keep that separate from the donations for the monthly bills. The reason for that is that I plan to use that money to fix and modernise the Dublin Event Guide website. It really needs it and I was postponing that for a long time of the cost that are not covered by the normal donations.

With the above counter you know at all times where we stand and when donating is needed. Donations keep the Dublin Event Guide alive and all donors will also get some additional bonuses.

Here are some more details about donations:
Any amount is appreciated, but if you are looking for a recommendation, then I suggest a donation of 12 Euro per year. – That’s just one Euro per month and you get FOUR Dublin Event Guides for that Euro! If your funds are limited, but you still want to help, you can buy a virtual coffee for just EUR 4. All donations will be used in full for the Dublin Event Guide.

To donate, use the Dublin Event Guide Donation Page here: gturl.eu/DEGdonate. It is really easy to use and uses Stripe’s trustworthy payment processing. You can even sign up for a yearly subscription on the donation page! Yearly subscriptions will give some important financial stability and reliability to the Dublin Event Guide and are therefore very much appreciated! (Look for the RED subscription buttons at the bottom of the Donation Page.)

In case the donation page doesn’t work for you, the old links are here: You can donate via www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide or for Revolut users among you, just use @joergbrb or now also revolut.me/joergbrb
(If possible, please send your full name and e-mail address as a message with the payment via PayPal or Revolut so that I can tell you about bonuses for donors when available.)

To buy one or two or even three virtual coffees for the Dublin Event Guide, come to the “Buy Me a Coffee” page here www.buymeacoffee.com/DublinEventG

And there is one other way to help and it is even free: If you come to www.DublinEventGuide.com and check out some of the ads and click on the ones that you find interesting, that also helps with a few cent! ?

Thank you!!

++ Exhibition: “Borders: Studying Margins To Question The World”
until 05 June 2023 – daily 10:00-17:00 – EPIC, chq Building, Customs House Quay, Dublin 1 – Adm: General Museum Admission
Borders are to be found everywhere: in the shadows of the walls being built all over the world, on the fingerprints of travellers and asylum seekers, or in the everyday lives of cross-border workers. Borders change and move within time and space, depending on political and economic events. Nowadays, they emerge across diverse places and in different shapes, impacting our individual and collective lives.
Although we are meant to be in a globalised world, borders are being reactivated and strengthened for some people while they open and disappear for others.

Designed by the Musée national de l’histoire de l’immigration (French National Museum of the History of Immigration), this exhibition draws on historic, geographical, economic and human perspectives. It is an invitation to deepen our understanding of how borders are constructed and evolve, beyond the dichotomy between open or closed, nationals and foreigners, economic migrants and political refugees. The cartographic work raises the issue of orders of magnitude, of proportions in representations, and highlights the relativity of data.

This exhibition will be on show in EPIC until 05 June and admission is included in the normal admission charges. epicchq.com/exhibition/borders-studying-margins-to-question-the-world/

And there is more…

+++ PHIZZFEST in Phibsborough
Phizzfest got HUGE! It is phizzing with events and variety and excitement and you don’t want to miss this. All events are on www.phizzfest.ie/ There are Walking Tours, a Duck Race, Film Screenings and Gigs. Not every event is free, so you need to look a little closer to find the free ones, but they are there!

+++ CULTURE DATE WITH DUBLIN 8
A weekend of culture in Dublin 8 on 13+14 May. There will be over 50+ events including walking tours, family friendly activities, historical lectures, cocktail masterclasses, workshops, an outdoor cinema extravaganza, music and more. SOME events are in the listings above, but it is worth checking the website www.culturedatewithdublin8.ie/festival2023 for all details.

+++ LEARN A NEW SKILL WITH ONLINE COURSES
Is there ever a wrong time for learning a new skill or enhancing what you are already interested in? Maybe it is a language or an instrument or some technical skills? Or something completely different? Nearly every subject is there! Check out Udemy via the link below, they have thousands of courses and there is good chance that what you are looking for is available. Nearly all the courses are REALLY affordable!
The lowest price most of the time is EUR 12.99. Sometimes it even goes down further to EUR 9.99 and when that happens (about once or twice a year), I will tell you. But even 12.99 is definitely a good price for what you get!

Check out the website at www.getthislink.com/Udemy22 And if you buy through that link, you also help the Dublin Event Guide! :-)

+++ COMIC BOOK FESTIVAL DUBLIN
The 8th Comic Book Festival Dublin, organised by Alliance Française Dublin, Illustrators Ireland and the French Embassy in Ireland, is taking place from 17-20 May. It will consist of a series of events including discussions, live readings, screenings and creative workshops for children, teenagers and adult. A good few are free. Booking is required or at least strongly recommended! Details are at web.alliance-francaise.ie/bd/2023 for all details.

+++ National Biodiversity Week
From 19-28 May National Biodiversity Week will take place. There will be a range of free events (over 100!) in connection with wildlife and biodiversity and you find them here www.biodiversityweek.ie

+++ Bealtaine Festival
Every year in May the Bealtaine Festival takes place in Ireland. It “celebrates the arts and creativity as we age”. Once upon a time it as an arts festival for seniors and seniors were described as people 55+. But who nowadays wants to be called a senior at 55? ;-) So now it is for all “older people” with no age specified anymore.
If you are “older” (don’t ask “in comparison to what?”!!!) then this festival is for you.
There will be lots of events throughout May. I will list some in the Dublin Event Guide, but won’t be able to list all 90 events for Greater Dublin. You can find the full list at bealtaine.ie/events-2/ Many events are free.

+++ Storytelling and Toddler Groups at Dublin City Libraries
The Dublin City Libraries have published a list of Storytelling and Toddler groups for age 0-4 across the Dublin City Libraries. You can find it here www.dublincity.ie/library/blog/storytelling-and-toddler-groups-dublin-city-libraries

+++ Spring into Heritage – Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown – Free tours
Usually twice a year, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown offers free guided tours at major local heritage landmarks. The spring version is taking place from 10 April until 07 May. The tours are really interesting. They take place at at specific times and the sites covered are National Maritime Museum, Dalkey Castle & Heritage Centre, Cabinteely House, James Joyce Tower and Museum, The Oratory, Marlay House, Fernhill Park & Gardens.
Tours need to be pre-booked and the online brochure and the booking link are on events.dlrcoco.ie/event/spring-heritage-2023
There are also two history talks (“The Metals” on 19 April and “The Borough Environment Through The 20th Century” on 03 May). Both talks need to be pre-booked as well and you should do that soon if you are interested. The booking link is on the same website above.

+++ Irish Glass Biennale – Exhibition
The National College of Art & Design and the OPW (Office of Public Works) are inviting to an exhibition of work from some of the worlds most innovative glass artists. The Irish Glass Biennale will be on show at the Coach House Gallery, Dublin Castle from 28 April to 20 August. It will be open daily from 10:00-17:00 (Closed for lunch from 13:15-to 13:45.) and admission is free. The Coach House Gallery is in the Garden of Dublin Castle, next to the Chester Beatty Museum. www.gov.ie/en/press-release/981dc-ireland-glass-biennale-2023/

+++ INTERNATIONAL LITERATURE FESTIVAL
This year’s International Literature Festival Dublin will take place in Merrion Square from 19-28 May. I searched and searched, but could only find “Bar Access” tickets for free. ilfdublin.ticketsolve.com/ticketbooth/shows/873636392 The website is at ilfdublin.com/

And this is it for another week! Have a great weekend and good new week.

Take care,

–Joerg (dublineventguide@gmail.com)
