Have you heard about Blue Monday? Allegedly it is the most depressing day of the year and it happened last Monday (16 Jan). I didn’t tell you before because there is the possibility that some people will feel depressed just because they know that this day is meant to be a depressing one.
|
|
I am saying “ALLEGEDLY it is the most depressing day” because it seems that the day was completely invented by Sky Travel, a now-closed-down travel channel on TV, who – again seemingly – paid a psychologist from Liverpool to claim that his formula calculated that that Monday was the worst day.
|
|
|
|
Interesting story, isn’t it? So the whole thing about Blue Monday is made up and there is no most depressing day in the year!! At least not a uniform day for everyone.
|

|
Short and cold days usually challenge us more than bright warm summery days. It has to do with light and temperature, but also with our activities: I’d say you are busier and more active in summer than in winter.
|
|

This year’s Tradfest will take place from 25-29 Jan and while the main concerts are all not free, there are the Smithwick’s Sessions, which are gigs in pubs in and around Temple Bar and they are all free. +++ Dublin Lunar New Year
Once upon a time (until just about 2 years ago), this was the “Dublin Chinese New Year Festival”. But then political correctness got hold of the people behind the festival and seemingly somebody told them that there are other countries as well that use the same calendar (Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei, Vietnam, Thailand and Korea are mentioned on the website, oddly Taiwan is not mentioned).
The festival is still MAINLY the Chinese New Year Festival, but to make it less specific the official name is now “Dublin Lunar New Year Festival”.

+++ Discover Dublin Docklands App
Dublin City has a new app that allows us to discover iconic Dublin landmarks such as the famine statues, the CHQ building and more.
The app is available to download for free via doorsintodocklands.com/
After you got the app, you can point your phone at the landmarks and this will prompt the related images, videos and stories to pop up.
The app uses Augmented Reality (AR), a mix of 3D graphics, animation and audio, to immerse users in the story of the city.
Several colourful characters from history will also appear in AR to tell their tales. These include Captain Bligh who surveyed Dublin Bay in the 1800s and Maggie Doyle, who was a docker’s daughter.

+++ Chasing the Ball – Football Exhibition
The Italian Institute of Culture in Dublin, with the support of the Embassy of Italy in Ireland are inviting to a football sticker exhibition in Printworks at Dublin Castle, showcasing original material covering the 1990, 1994 and 2002 World Cups.
Ireland and Italy and their football teams will be the focus and you will find a series of albums, stickers, drawings and other original materials.
The exhibition will be on show from 06-22 Jan and admission is free. Opening hours is Monday-Saturday 10:00-17:30.

+++ Housing Unlocked Exhibition
The “Housing Unlocked” exhibition is described as a celebration of innovation, optimism and imagination. Eight architect-led proposals will be presented that are intended to unlock the housing potential in our villages, towns and cities.
Housing Unlocked is a partnership between the Irish Architecture Foundation and The Housing Agency.
The exhibition will be open from 14 Oct-18 Dec and from 03-17 Feb (Tues-Fri: 12:00-17:00, Sat: 14:00-17:00). It will take place in the former Science Gallery in Pearse Street (Naughton Institute of TCD). Admission is free. housingunlocked.ie/

+++ Bowie Photograph Exhibition – Bowie Festival
An exhibition of Bowie photographs by Philippe Auliac will be on display from Wed 11 Jan – Sun 29 Jan in Rathfarnham Castle (10:30-16:15). Admission is free (closed Mondays and Tuesdays).
Since first shooting Bowie in 1972, the French photographer has captured the rock icon many times over his long career. Many of these images are now deemed classic portrayals and for this extensive exhibition Philippe will have over 60 photographs on display as well as an audiovisual screening of further images and some rare interviews with the starman. www.dublinbowiefestival.ie/philippe-auliac-23
