Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)

It’s getting Spooky!

Earth Rising Eco Art Festival, Liberty Vibe Open Air Gigs, Spooktacular Dandelion Market, Creatures of Samhain

Hi!

Halloween is around the corner! The decorations are out/up everywhere, the kids are looking forward to bag lots of treats, the Halloween events are being prepared around Dublin (and you sometimes wonder if the grown ups are more into it or the kids ;-) ) and even the Dublin Event Guide got a tiny bit spookier than normal.

Here in Ireland, the birth place of Halloween, we can’t get a lot more into it, but elsewhere it seems to be spreading like wildfire! Even in Germany where there was NO Halloween when I grew up (That was just a couple of years ago! I am still a spring chicken! :-D )

What are your plans for Halloween? Will you dress up? Go to parties or have children duties?

Here in the Dublin Event Guide, I have to play a “Trick or Treat” with you this month as well. For the first time since I added the “donation counter”, we are still below what is needed to pay the bills for October. So if you give enough treats (i.e. donations) all is good, but if we don’t reach the EUR 200, then the “tricks” will have to come to the fore. If I had cute Puppy Eyes, I would use them to beg for money. ;-)

Donations in October:
EUR 162

(By the end of the month, this number has to reach or exceed EUR 200 to guarantee the continuation of the Dublin Event Guide.)

If the Dublin Event Guide helps you to find out about free events in Dublin, please help with a donation.

The counter here shows the current donation status. By the end of the month EUR 200 will be subtracted to pay the bills. If more money has been donated, the rest will be carried forward. If donations have stopped below the EUR 200, the missing amount will be carried over.

The great people that donated last week were Diana, Ger and Juliana! Thank you so much! Your donation will keep the Dublin Event Guide alive and will motivate me to continue week after week. I appreciate you and your support!

With the above counter you know at all times where we stand and when donating is needed. Donations keep the Dublin Event Guide alive and all donors will also get some additional bonuses. The first of those bonuses is described above.

Here are some more details about donations:
Any amount is appreciated, but if you are looking for a recommendation, then I suggest a donation of 12 Euro per year. – That’s just one Euro per month and you get FOUR Dublin Event Guides for that! If your funds are limited, but you still want to help, you can buy a virtual coffee for just EUR 3. All donations will be used in full for the Dublin Event Guide.

To donate, use the Dublin Event Guide Donation Page here: gturl.eu/DEGdonate. It is really easy to use and uses Stripe’s trustworthy payment processing. You can even sign up for a yearly subscription on the donation page! Yearly subscriptions will give some important financial stability and reliability to the Dublin Event Guide and are therefore very much appreciated! (Look for the RED subscription buttons at the bottom of the Donation Page.)

In case the donation page doesn’t work for you, the old links are here: You can donate via www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide or for Revolut users among you, just use @joergbrb or now also revolut.me/joergbrb
(If possible, please send your full name and e-mail address as a message with the payment via PayPal or Revolut so that I can tell you about bonuses for donors when available.)

To buy one or two or even three virtual coffees for the Dublin Event Guide, come to the “Buy Me a Coffee” page here www.buymeacoffee.com/DublinEventG

And there is one other way to help and it is even free: If you come to www.DublinEventGuide.com and check out some of the ads and click on the ones that you find interesting, that also helps with a few cent! ?

Thank you!!

+++ SAMHAIN FAMILY FESTIVAL

Did you know Halloween originated in Ireland? Celebrate the magic of the spoken word and awaken your inner Seanchaí at Samhain Family Festival.
Samhain is a festival that celebrates Ireland’s ancient Halloween roots and rich storytelling traditions. Modern Seanchaís and colourful characters will share spine-tingling tales and there will be plenty of fun in store for all ages as we invite you to celebrate the magic of the spoken word.
The Samhain Family Festival offers a range of workshops suitable for different age ranges, each workshop is 1 hour, with tickets including access for 1 child and an accompanying adult.
The workshops are
. Make your Own Monster with Artists “KIKI NA ART” (Age 5+) – BOOKED OUT

+++ Ghosts, Ghouls and “Goodie Glover Day”: The Irish Origins of Halloween 28/29/3031 October – 16:00 – EPIC, chq Building, Customs House Quay, Dublin 1 – Adm: EUR 17.50 (Age: 12+)
Join us as we leave daylight behind and explore the darker side of our mythologies and histories at EPIC!
Halloween is fast approaching and it’s time to delve back in the origins of Irish traditions and explore how Samhain became Halloween. Irish ghost stories and funerary traditions travelled with the Irish diaspora and often became entangled with local customs to form entirely new traditions over the centuries.
Learn more about The Dullahan (“dark man”) a malevolent harbinger of death who served as the inspiration for the headless horseman of Sleepy Hollow, or how the local practice of burying corpses with a stake through the heart influenced the writings of Irish emigrant Bram Stoker, author of Dracula.
Uncover the tragic story of “Goody Annie Glover” the unfortunate Irish woman who became the last person hanged for witchcraft in Boston in 1688 and how the influx of Irish immigrants, who brought their traditions and folktales, helped shape the story of jack-o’-lanterns in America.
This ticket includes entry to EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum and a bespoke tour. Book at epicchq.com/event/ghosts-ghouls-and-goodie-glover-day-the-irish-origins-of-halloween/

And there is more…

+++ Housing Unlocked Exhibition
The “Housing Unlocked” exhibition is described as a celebration of innovation, optimism and imagination. Eight architect-led proposals will be presented that are intended to unlock the housing potential in our villages, towns and cities.
Housing Unlocked is a partnership between the Irish Architecture Foundation and The Housing Agency.
The exhibition will be open from 14 Oct-18 Dec and from 02-21 Jan (Tues-Fri: 12:00-17:00, Sat: 14:00-17:00). It will take place in the former Science Gallery in Pearse Street (Naughton Institute of TCD). Admission is free. housingunlocked.ie/

+++ LOW PRICED BOOKS (WITH FREE DELIVERY)
Book Depository is the place where you can buy low priced books, usually for better prices than on Amazon. And Book Depository always delivers for free. By buying books from Book Depository you will also help the Dublin Event Guide for no additional cost to you, so two good reasons in one. Use this link: shor.by/BookDepository

+++ RDS Visual Art Awards Exhibition
The RDS Visual Art Awards Exhibition is a vital exposure for emerging visual artists and the exhibition will be open from 21-29 Oct. The venue is the RDS Concert Hall and opening hours are 10:30-17:30. Admission is free. www.rds.ie/rds-foundation/arts/vaa

+++ EARTH RISING – ECO ART FESTIVAL
The Irish Museum of Modern Art is inviting to an Eco Art Festival from Fri 21 to Sun 23 Oct. There will be over 70 contributors, artist commissions, talks, workshops, Seed STUDIO and showcases and a “Built to Disappear” eco pavilion. Live Music and food stalls will provide entertainment and sustenance. The festival is an outdoor festival, so come prepared. Some events need pre-booking, others are drop-in events. The festival will run on Friday from 15:00-21:00 and on Sat and Sun from 12:00-19:00. For all details and to get tickets, go to imma.ie/whats-on/earth-rising/

+++ PURPLE FLAG – ALIVE AFTER FIVE FESTIVAL
From 20-23 Oct Dublin will celebrate the Purple Flag festival. Like the Blue Flag is a quality accreditation for clean beaches, the Purple Flag is an accreditation that honours excellence in the appeal and management of a town or city centre area after 17:00. But since when is there any central management done for anything that happens after 17:00 in Dublin. :-O
Dublin Town (the organisation that represents the traders in Dublin City) are looking after this festival and their website is not revealing much. Big words “packed with free events on both sides of the city showcasing the best in culture, food and music that Dublin has to offer”, but NO big events to be seen!
NOTHING was planned for two of the four days of the festival. Now the planned Sunday event, an outdoor screening of Ghostbusters, has been moved to Saturday at 17:00. The ONLY other event in this Purple Flag celebration was Buskers and stalls on Drury Street last Thursday.  www.dublintown.ie/purpleflag This poor “festival” is perfect proof why Dublin City/Dublin Town does not deserve the Purple Flag for “the appeal and management of a town or city centre area after 17:00”.

+++ LOTS of Trinity College Talks
Trinity College is offering really interesting talks and LOTS of them. There are so many that I couldn’t include them all, so please check out www.tcd.ie/news_events/events/ and if you check before Monday, then click on “NEXT WEEK” towards the top to see all the events that take place next week.

+++ LEARN A NEW SKILL WITH ONLINE COURSES
Is there ever a wrong time for learning a new skill or enhancing what you are already interested in? Maybe it is a language or an instrument or some technical skills? Or somethign completely different? Nearly every subject is there! Check out Udemy via the link below, they have thousands of courses and there is good chance that what you are looking for is available. Nearly all the courses are REALLY affordable!
The lowest price most of the time is EUR 12.99. Sometimes it even goes doen further to EUR 9.99 and when that happens (about once or twice a year), I will tell you. But even 12.99 is definitely a good price for what you get!

Check out the website at www.getthislink.com/Udemy22 And if you buy through that link, you also help the Dublin Event Guide! :-)

And this is it for another week! Have a great weekend and good new week.

Take care,

–Joerg (dublineventguide@gmail.com)
