A trick against Road Rage, Adam the space commander and lots of interesting events: Christmas is coming!

Hi all!

Yesterday afternoon my car broke down in Fairview and while waiting for a very long 2 hours for the AA, I had a great opportunity to watch what has happening around me. The car was “parked” in an awkward spot and about 25% of the taxi drivers felt they had to tell me by beeping or in a few cases by even stopping and shouting abuse at me.

It reminded me of something that I used to explain when I was still teaching self-defence classes a few years ago: To take the potentially dangerous aggression out of road rage, don’t engage or defend but shout some total nonsense back. It will puzzle the aggressor so much that they often give up. An example would be “It is you! Your fault that we didn’t win the Olympics!” or “I never said that your car is purple!!” :-D

It is called a “pattern interrupt”. Something happens that wasn’t expected at all and it is so confusing that the other person loses track of their original plan of action. Try it out if you want to confuse people. It works and can even be fun. ;-)

Oddly, that was not at all the story that I wanted to start this week’s Dublin Event Guide with, I Had a totally different story planned, so I will keep that other story for next week then. ;-) (That is called “opening a loop” and is a really interesting concept in a completely different area of my areas of interest. :-D )

Human psychology is such a fascinating subject!! Facebook uses human psychology to make their product more appealing to you all the time. For example they measure in the first 60 minutes after a post is posted on their platform how many people engage with post by clicking on one of the three Facebook “currencies”. L, S and C and I bet you can guess what the three letters stand for. So if you could click on L or S or leave your opinion underneath this post at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide then they realised that lots of people WANT to see this post and consequently they would show it even more. Could you maybe help and click on L, S or C? More people will see the Dublin Event Guide and will participate in events (even if it is just online events) and this will give the organisers the confirmation that they are doing the right thing and then they will do even more events for you. Thanks for clicking! :-)

Museums and other cultural venues, restaurants and shops are open again since Tuesday make use of them, enjoy them and leave some money there. We don’t know how long it will last before we will have another lockdown and we need to keep shops and restaurants alive.

Speaking of “keeping alive” ;-) if you have some change left after all your shopping and eating out, please also think of the Dublin Event Guide. ;-) The Dublin Event Guide is kept going by you and you only! This is the deal that has worked best over the last few years and I hope it will continue to work: I do the work and find lots of free events for you and you help me pay the bills through donations. As long as this works, I will continue!!

I am not asking for a lot, but I think one or two Euro per MONTH is a very fair suggestion. So for the year, this would be 12 Euro or – for people you can afford a bit more – just 24 Euro per year! That is ONLY 23 (or 46) cent per weekly Dublin Event Guide edition! An amazingly low cost for the great value that you get every week! :-)

Please donate via www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide
or for Revolut users among you just via 0872931571.

And if 12 Euro is too much for you, then it would be great if you bought one or two or even three virtual coffees for the Dublin Event Guide and you can do that on the “Buy Me a Coffee” page here www.buymeacoffee.com/DublinEventG

And come over to www.DublinEventGuide.com to check out some of the ads and click on the ones that you find interesting. It really helps if you do that! ;-)

Thank you!!

You want for more events and suggestions?

I found a few more things to keep you going or that you might find interesting:

1) TOY SHOW STAR ADAM KING
If you watched last week’s Toy Show, chances are that you were moved and impressed by little Adam King who is six years of age and wants to be a space shuttle ground control commander because he suffers from brittle bones and therefore won’t be able to be an astronaut. A short clip (unfortunately of the best moments with Adam) can be found here. youtu.be/5g6HXuhoKLw Adam was melting the viewers’ hearts and during the week a few more things have happened:
Adam met astronaut Commander Christ Hadfield and Hadfield had some great advise for the little boy: www.rte.ie/entertainment/2020/1204/1182427-toy-show-space-boy-adam-meets-astronaut-chris-hadfield/ and also caricaturist Niall O’Loughlin created a beautiful cartoon of Adam extra.ie/2020/11/30/must-see/adam-king-toy-show-adam-king
Adam fascinated us because he has such a clear vision of what he wants to do in the future. The fact that he has brittle bones and therefore will not be able to become an astronaut plays a little into it, but Adam is a cool and lovable kid no matter what. If he can maintain his curiosity and enthusiasm, he will go far in his life!
Most of us had a lot more enthusiasm when we were kids, but life and people in our lives steal that enthusiasm from us. If you want to rediscover it in your life, read Angela Duckworth’s book “Grit”. (Go to shor.by/BookDepository and search for “Grit” or for 9781785040207.) And if you are a parent or a loving and caring aunt or uncle, you should also read “The Yes Brain” by Daniel J Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson. (Go to shor.by/BookDepository and search for 9780399594663.)

2) CHRISTMAS MARKETS CANCELLED
Because some websites still mention one of the Christmas Markets, I want to confirm again that both the Christmas Market at Dublin Castle and the Mistletown Market that was planned for the Fruit and Vegetable Market in Mary’s Lane, near Capel Street are cancelled. There will also be NO Christmas Market organised by the people that were in the past behind the Dublin Flea Market (neither at Smithfield nor at the Point Village).

3) LEARN A NEW SKILL WITH ONLINE COURSES – Special Offer
I just bought two new Udemy courses last week, how about you? What skills are you adding during these home-working times? Udemy courses are still super popular because as long as we still spend a lot of time at home, it makes sense to use some of that time to learn something new.
Did you learn a new skill in the last few months? The lowest cost for courses this month will be around 12.99. I just bought another 14 hour course for that price. Super value!! Check out the website at  shor.by/GqCk And if you buy through that link, you help the Dublin Event Guide! ;-)

4) READ MORE BOOKS
A new free Book summary can be found here every week: readitfor.me/91927 Readitfor.me actually provides a number of weekly free book summaries or you can buy monthly or even Lifetime access to their book summaries.

For physical books and e-books I recommend Book Depository because they are usually cheaper than others and they always include delivery for free (and by using this link you help the Dublin Event Guide). Please don’t use any other links than the one below!! With this link you do help the Dublin Event Guide when you purchase a book and it doesn’t cost you a cent: shor.by/BookDepository  .

And this is it for another week! Have a good weekend and new week.
Take care,

–Joerg
