Oh nooo! We are going in the wrong direction! – Real Life is back on hold, so get busy with lots of online events!
Hi all!
The news last night was not good! Not good at all! (And I am not talking about a bad Culture Night, although an Online Culture Night is really not great in comparison to the real thing.) No, I am talking about the move of Dublin to Level 3 of Lockdown Levels. It already looked like it would move in that direction on Tuesday when the new 6 months plan was announced, but for our lives and any events in Dublin, this direction is really bad.
And to be honest, I find it difficult to discover a positive “spin” for that news. The only thing that keeps us going, I guess, is the knowledge that this situation will come to an end at some point! Not necessarily because of a vaccine, but because more and more information is being learned about the Coronavirus and what can be done to reduce its effects and threat. Giving blood thinners, steroids (Cortison), Vitamin D and later intubation than initially applied, are some of the crucial measures that are responsible for a decrease of deaths and also of some longterm effects. And in 6-9 months we will know even better what to do than to do. So the message is: Don’t despair!! Stay healthy, stay active and stay sane!
The announcement of the new restrictions will have caught some people by surprise and consequently it is even more challenging this week to compile a reliable Dublin Event Guide. (I have detected in the last few months that updating event information is in current times not the highest priority of some event organisers. BUT Friday evening announcements of significant changes ALSO don’t help!!!!!)
We will keep going here at Dublin Event Guide HQ. ;-) But this is only possible with your help! Without your help, the Dublin Event Guide will not continue and at the moment the donations are well below what is needed to continue week after week.
I am not asking for a lot, but I think one or two Euro per MONTH is a very fair suggestion. So for the year, this would be 12 Euro or – for people you can afford a bit more – just 24 Euro per year! That is ONLY 23 or 46 cent per Dublin Event Guide edition! An amazingly low cost for the great value that you get every week! :-)
Please donate via www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide
or for Revolut users among you just via 0872931571.
And if 12 Euro is too much for you, then it would be great if you bought one or two or even three virtual coffees for the Dublin Event Guide and you can do that on the “Buy Me a Coffee” page here www.buymeacoffee.com/DublinEventG
And come over to www.DublinEventGuide.com to check out some of the ads and click on the ones that you find interesting, that also helps!!
Thank you very very much!
The EPIC Zone
“EPIC – The Irish Emigration Museum” (www.epicchq.com) are currently sponsoring the Dublin Event Guide and this section of the weekly newsletter will contain relevant information about events in general or about EPIC-related news and happenings.
++ Sadly, EPIC was forced to close its doors again until Dublin will return from Level 3 to Level 2. Everyone in the museum has worked extremely hard to provide a safe and still enjoyable visit and they all can’t wait until they will be able to re-open again. In the meantime we might tell you a bit more about the stories that the great EPIC exhibitions explains. Watch this space and check the EPIC Zone next week!
And here are as many free events for you as I could find:
Please be aware that the Friday evening time for announcements that this government has chosen are not helpful. So a variety of events might have to be cancelled in the morning.

1) ARRRRRRRRRRGHHH!!!
Today is “Talk like a Pirate Day”, so the “Arrrrrgh!” could be talking like a Pirate or expressing your frustration about the new restrictions. In my case it is the restrictions that get me to react like that. And the announcement of restrictions like that on a Friday evening really makes forward planning in a cultural sense quite tricky.
So this week, this section of “further information” is not so well developed. I will mention the Online Courses and Book Depository again, because they will help you to keep busy and learn something new AND because buying from them will help the Dublin Event Guide.
But apart from that, I didn’t have enough time to compile more content for this section.
I will do better next week! ;-)
Two things I will mention, though, and I hope they will still be available after Culture Night:
—–
Have a look at the online tour through the fascinating and intriguing Freemason’s Hall here freemason.ie/culture-night-2020-video-tour/
And not really less intriguing, although for different reasons, you can also tour the place where our parlamentarians and Government normally do their job. Although at the moment they are in the CCD and not in Kildare Street for all Dail sessions. Here is a 3D Tour of Leinster House where the “Houses of the Oireachtas” are based: www.oireachtas.ie/
2) Dublin Festival of History – Global and Free
The Dublin Festival of History is continuing until 29 Sept. This year the festival will be fully online and all events will be free.
—
Check out www.dublinfestivalofhistory.ie/ where the full programme can be found. There are some really interesting talks, so don’t miss out!
3) Online Courses – Special Offer
During the Covid lockdown, enrollments in Udemy courses increased by 425%! Wow! What did you learn during that time? In September most Udemy courses will cost between EUR 10.99 and 12.99 again. At some point in August the courses were even reduced to 9.99, but these things happen sometimes without advance warning. I checked though and in September and October there are no 9.99 discounts planned, so you better get the courses when you see form for between 10.99 and 12.99. Please use this link shor.by/GqCk because if you buy through that link, you help the Dublin Event Guide! ;-)
4) Books
A new free Book summary can be found here every week: readitfor.me/91927 Readitfor.me actually provides a number of weekly free book summaries and they also have a special offer at the moment still that will expire soon: For $99 you will get Lifetime access to ALL book summaries! This is a great price if you consider that their normal monthly charge is EUR 10, so in just 10 month you would have spent more than with the lifetime access.
—
To buy physical books and e-books I recommend Book Depository because they are usually cheaper than others and they always include delivery for free (and by using this link you help the Dublin Event Guide). Please don’t use any other links than the one below!! (Book Depository changed all their links and with the old one you don’t help the Dublin Event Guide.) With this link you do help the Dublin Event Guide when you purchase a book and it doesn’t cost you a cent: shor.by/BookDepository
And this is it for another week! Have a good weekend and new week.
