Life without pubs!? – Events, suggestions and more

Hi all!

The pub owners are still fighting for the permission to open earlier than the official plan suggests, but we already know than whenever it will be, it will be completely different than before.

Table service only, no standing at the bar, max numbers at tables, big distance between people will be some changes that not everybody will find terrible, but when you read between the lines, then the biggest change will be that there won’t be any live music and possibly not even other music for quite some time.

Any background “noise” will require us to raise our voice and to move closer together so that we can still understand each other. Raising your voice does increase the speed and therefore distance droplets will fly when propelled out of our mouth and that combined with the moving closer together to hear, is a potentially dangerous combination.

The big question is if pubs will be able to survive with so low customer numbers, but the even bigger concern that I have is the impact of all this on our cultural landscape, in this case mainly on musicians and bands. Imagine of there couldn’t be any live gigs for the rest of the year!? Nothing in the 3 Arena, or the Olympia or Vicar Street but also nothing in all the pubs up and down the country?

We don’t know if all this will happen as we might expect right now, but we HAVE to think about new ways of supporting our musicians and bands.

Maybe we need to enhance the busking opportunities (outside with distance!) so that we can still enjoy live music? Or we need to consider donating to musicians even for Zoom-based gigs (semi-live gigs!?). Maybe all these free Zoom concerts will need to charge an admission fee from some time so that musicians can pay the rent again? Even at free gigs before Covid musicians were usually still paid by the pub, but what can be done if there is no payment coming from that end? (BTW: The Dublin Buskers “came together” for a virtual One Love performance: youtu.be/G5tKZVchCaE)

What do you think? Do you have some good ideas what could be done? Wht do you think about “semi-live” concerts? Would you be prepared to throw some money in the virtual hat?

If these are the new post-Covid conditions and we can’t have totally free gigs anymore for a while, I will have to think about if or how to continue with the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. I am open for suggestions and ideas!!!

In the meantime I have to deal with a problem closer to home: The donations for the Dublin Event Guide have dropped so much that they are well below the cost. :-O So I need to appeal to you again. If you want the Dublin Event Guide to continue for the foreseeable future, please help with some virtual coffees or maybe even a 10 Euro donation via Paypal. Every cent is MUCH appreciated and the money is not going in my pocket but will be 100% invested in the the Dublin Event Guide!

You can contribute here on the “Buy Me a Coffee” site: www.buymeacoffee.com/DublinEventG
Or even better (because I don’t have to pay any fees) you can donate directly via www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide
And for the Revolut users among you, it is super easy via 0872931571.

And if you want to come to my website and give some attention to the advertisers there, please go to www.DublinEventGuide.com

Please help me keeping the Dublin Event Guide alive.

In my blog post this week, I am describing some of the theories around the creation of the Coronavirus and why some don’t make sense at all. There is also a surprising new possibility that hasn’t been considered too much yet: www.joergsteegmueller.com/2020/05/09/the-corona-files-it-wasnt-me-says-the-pangolin/

The Lockdown

How are you doing? Does the 5km limit for exercise make any difference? It doesn’t in my case, but if you are in the middle of an urban area with only streets to go for a walk then being allowed to travel a little to your place of exercise could certainly make the current restrictions a lot more bearable.

Some asked, so here is the link again for the 5km radius website: 2kmfromhome.com/5km/

Dublin City, Fingal, South County Dublin and Dun Laoghaire Rathdown have decided to reserve their parks and car park spaces at parks every day from 13:30-15:30 for people that were cocooning.
Dun Laoghaire has issued the following list of locations: Marlay Park (Grange Road), Cabinteely Park, Killiney Hill, Kilbogget Park and Shanganagh Park.
Fingal County issued this list: Car parks will be open at the following locations: Malahide Demesne (Back Road car park), Newbridge House, Ardgillan Demesne, St Catherine’s Park, Millennium Park, Santry Demesne car park.

Where I go for walks, I encounter people of all ages and we manage to keep a significant distance from each other even in a normal environment, so I am not sure if a whole park needs to be reserved for a two hour period. I would HOPE that we all can stay away from each other if we encounter others that might be part of a high-risk group in ALL situations! Maybe Dun Laoghaire Rathdown is overdoing the care a little? Or have you encountered many people that even in an open park would come worryingly close?

The high-risk groups definitely need our protection, but we have to find a way to protect them with other people around and without other people around!

The Countdown has started!

Relatively soon, many of us will go back to work, although work will for most be completely different than it has ever been before. We might be asked to work a lot more from home to create space in offices, Zoom could become much more relevant than it ever has been and international travel will be ruled out for quite some time. Big changes!

But others will unfortunately not have a job to go back to and either need to look for something new (recruitment will possibly only slowly get into gear again) or you might have to re-invent yourself. If you think you could do with some help regarding learning relevant skills, feel free to send me a message. I am looking at the possibility – with some other people – to provide some help to fill skills gaps.

What can I do while being locked in?

Here are some suggestions for activities that are NOT watching TV. ;-)

1) Virtual Tour of the week
Since it will probably be another long while until we can travel there again (or for the first time), this week’s virtual tour is bringing us to far flung locations.
Machu Picchu in Peru is on the plan for today. Have a look virtually, it is a really interesting tour: www.youvisit.com/tour/machupicchu

2) Help for Parents & EPIC Explorer Pack
UNICEF is giving some parenting tips for Covid times. If you could benefit from some (more) advise, have a look here www.unicef.org/coronavirus/covid-19-parenting-tips

Following on from the huge success with their Easter Rising History-at-Home Pack, EPIC the Irish Emigration Museum have created a downloadable Explorers Activity Pack for families with children aged 8-10. You can download it at dublin.epicchq.com/explorers-history-at-home-pack

3) National Geographic Talks
National Geographic Live Backstage with Egyptologist Kara Cooney on Wed 13 May at 18:00 you can find out what live is like as an Egyptologist. www.facebook.com/events/547909552822788/

4) Online Courses – Lowest price
Udemy courses are still available for the lowest price ever of EUR 9.99, so NOW is the time to get the courses you want to do. The special offer will end on 14 May and it could take easily until the end of the year before you will get courses for that price again.
You have lifetime access to the courses, so even if you can’t learn all at the same time, buying it now for later is definitely worth it:  If you use this link here, then you will also help the Dublin Event Guide (for no cost to you!): click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=/WFVYmx8raQ&offerid=624447.12811&type=3&subid=0

5) Books
My preferred boo summary sites are Read it For me (readitfor.me/91927) and the app “Story Shots”. Both are free in the basic version.
To buy your eBooks (or paper books) I recommend Book Depository because they are usually cheaper than others and they always include delivery for free (and by using this link you help the Dublin Event Guide): www.bookdepository.com/?a_aid=dubevg

And my book recommendations this week are:
+ The first one is “The Tipping Point” by Malcolm Gladwell. Gladwell defines a tipping point as “the moment of critical mass, the threshold, the boiling point” in a sociological sense and this could be quite relevant in context with the current Covid restrictions. At least our politicians should read this book. But maybe you also want to know about Tipping Points. (www.bookdepository.com/book/9780316346627/?a_aid=dubevg)
+ The second book that I will mention today is one that changed my life and I wish I had read it many years earlier. It is “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” by Robert Kiyosaki and it tells Robert’s story of growing up with two dads his real father and the father of his best friend, his rich dad and the ways in which both men shaped his thoughts about money and investing. The book makes clear that it is incorrect that you need to earn a high income to be rich and explains the difference between working for money and having your money work for you. (www.bookdepository.com/book/9781612680194/?a_aid=dubevg)

6) Gospel Music and Africa Day
On 24 May is Africa Day and the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir plans a big virtual event with an African Gospel choir and range of other contributors from Ireland and African countries. It’s another 2 weeks until Africa Day, but maybe start spreading the word and in the meantime you can join us for our Gospel Choir Mass already before that day. The Gardiner Street Gospel Choir Mass takes place at 19:30 every Sunday and will be live streamed at www.facebook.com/TheGSGC/

7) Daily Meditation
Maria Tecce contacted me and she told me that she is doing a 15-20 minute long meditation every morning from Monday to Saturday at 09:00. Here are the details:
Stress-Buster Morning Meditation 09:00-09:20 Get set up for the day and calm those anxieties and worries. Beginners welcome! The Zoom link is on her Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/Maria-Tecce-176710845737068/ Look for the post from 29 April for the link.

8) Covid in Latin America
In the Northern Hemisphere we are hoping that the Covid-19 crisis will come to an end soon, but in Africa and parts of Latin America it is only starting and the expected death figures that some experts are talking about are shocking. If you are interested in finding out more about Covid in other parts of the world, listen to this seminar of the Latin America Solidarity Centre on Thursday 14 May from 19:00-22:00: “Impacts of Covid19 on the local economies of Latin America” www.facebook.com/events/262928914894920/

9) Improve your English
The Dublin School of Drama and Communication is inviting to a free Taster Class on Monday 11 May on “English Pronunciation for non native speakers” who are being fed up being asked to repeat themselves. It introduces the topics of single vowels, double vowels and triple vowel as well as intonation and word stress. You can book a space by sending an e-mailing to sales@speechdramadublin.com.
And there is a second Taster Class on Thursday (14 May at 19:00) for a new online public speaking class. Book this taster also via sales@speechdramadublin.com.
Course details are at speechdramadublin.com

10) LiveMedAid
In a first event ever of this type, the world’s leading doctors, scientists, writers, thinkers and cultural influencers will debate, collaborate and share ideas about what we can learn from the Coronavirus, how to defeat it and what we can expect as we move toward the future. The event will be here youtu.be/3TOi4PqpTh4 It will take place on Sat 09 May from 23:00 and is a fundraiser for Doctors Without Borders / MSF.

And this is it for another week! Have a good weekend and new week. Stay sane and safe and smile, laugh and stay in contact with your friends!Take care,

–Joerg
