What can I do while being locked in?
Here are some suggestions for activities that are NOT watching TV. ;-)
1) Virtual Tour of the week
Since it will probably be another long while until we can travel there again (or for the first time), this week’s virtual tour is bringing us to far flung locations.
Machu Picchu in Peru is on the plan for today. Have a look virtually, it is a really interesting tour: www.youvisit.com/tour/machupicchu
2) Help for Parents & EPIC Explorer Pack
UNICEF is giving some parenting tips for Covid times. If you could benefit from some (more) advise, have a look here www.unicef.org/coronavirus/covid-19-parenting-tips

Following on from the huge success with their Easter Rising History-at-Home Pack, EPIC the Irish Emigration Museum have created a downloadable Explorers Activity Pack for families with children aged 8-10. You can download it at dublin.epicchq.com/explorers-history-at-home-pack
3) National Geographic Talks
National Geographic Live Backstage with Egyptologist Kara Cooney on Wed 13 May at 18:00 you can find out what live is like as an Egyptologist. www.facebook.com/events/547909552822788/
4) Online Courses – Lowest price
Udemy courses are still available for the lowest price ever of EUR 9.99, so NOW is the time to get the courses you want to do. The special offer will end on 14 May and it could take easily until the end of the year before you will get courses for that price again.
You have lifetime access to the courses, so even if you can’t learn all at the same time, buying it now for later is definitely worth it: If you use this link here, then you will also help the Dublin Event Guide (for no cost to you!): click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=/WFVYmx8raQ&offerid=624447.12811&type=3&subid=0
5) Books
My preferred boo summary sites are Read it For me (readitfor.me/91927) and the app “Story Shots”. Both are free in the basic version.
To buy your eBooks (or paper books) I recommend Book Depository because they are usually cheaper than others and they always include delivery for free (and by using this link you help the Dublin Event Guide): www.bookdepository.com/?a_aid=dubevg
…
And my book recommendations this week are:
+ The first one is “The Tipping Point” by Malcolm Gladwell. Gladwell defines a tipping point as “the moment of critical mass, the threshold, the boiling point” in a sociological sense and this could be quite relevant in context with the current Covid restrictions. At least our politicians should read this book. But maybe you also want to know about Tipping Points. (www.bookdepository.com/book/9780316346627/?a_aid=dubevg)
+ The second book that I will mention today is one that changed my life and I wish I had read it many years earlier. It is “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” by Robert Kiyosaki and it tells Robert’s story of growing up with two dads his real father and the father of his best friend, his rich dad and the ways in which both men shaped his thoughts about money and investing. The book makes clear that it is incorrect that you need to earn a high income to be rich and explains the difference between working for money and having your money work for you. 6) Gospel Music and Africa Day
On 24 May is Africa Day and the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir plans a big virtual event with an African Gospel choir and range of other contributors from Ireland and African countries. It’s another 2 weeks until Africa Day, but maybe start spreading the word and in the meantime you can join us for our Gospel Choir Mass already before that day. The Gardiner Street Gospel Choir Mass takes place at 19:30 every Sunday and will be live streamed at www.facebook.com/TheGSGC/
7) Daily Meditation
Maria Tecce contacted me and she told me that she is doing a 15-20 minute long meditation every morning from Monday to Saturday at 09:00. Here are the details:
Stress-Buster Morning Meditation 09:00-09:20 Get set up for the day and calm those anxieties and worries. Beginners welcome! The Zoom link is on her Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/Maria-Tecce-176710845737068/ Look for the post from 29 April for the link.
8) Covid in Latin America
In the Northern Hemisphere we are hoping that the Covid-19 crisis will come to an end soon, but in Africa and parts of Latin America it is only starting and the expected death figures that some experts are talking about are shocking. If you are interested in finding out more about Covid in other parts of the world, listen to this seminar of the Latin America Solidarity Centre on Thursday 14 May from 19:00-22:00: “Impacts of Covid19 on the local economies of Latin America” www.facebook.com/events/262928914894920/
9) Improve your English
The Dublin School of Drama and Communication is inviting to a free Taster Class on Monday 11 May on “English Pronunciation for non native speakers” who are being fed up being asked to repeat themselves. It introduces the topics of single vowels, double vowels and triple vowel as well as intonation and word stress. You can book a space by sending an e-mailing to sales@speechdramadublin.com.
And there is a second Taster Class on Thursday (14 May at 19:00) for a new online public speaking class. Book this taster also via sales@speechdramadublin.com.
Course details are at speechdramadublin.com
10) LiveMedAid
In a first event ever of this type, the world’s leading doctors, scientists, writers, thinkers and cultural influencers will debate, collaborate and share ideas about what we can learn from the Coronavirus, how to defeat it and what we can expect as we move toward the future. The event will be here youtu.be/3TOi4PqpTh4 It will take place on Sat 09 May from 23:00 and is a fundraiser for Doctors Without Borders / MSF.
