Hi all!
I can’t believe that this is the second last Dublin Event Guide! :-O After 11.5 years the Dublin Event Guide has so much become part of my life that will feel very odd not to run this project anymore. But, as I said before, I won’t go away completely and so I am preparing for retirement when I can’t expect any financial support from you wonderful people anymore. For that reason I have changed E-Mail service providers from this week. I hope it won’t come with tooo many hiccups. BUT they have warned me that the first 500 will be sent immediately and the rest only after 1-3 hours to see if the mailing list is dodgy or not. :-O Let’s hope it won’t be 3 hours!
[quads id=1]
This weekend and next weekend are the main Christmas Market weekends, so check out all the markets in this Dublin Event Guide and at www.DublinChristmasMarkets.com
I am so impressed and chuffed! I expected that I would end up with a big bill on 14 December and I really did not your amazing generosity. With your super help, it looks as if there is a real possibility to bring the bill amount to ZERO by 14 December! Thank you soooo much! The outstanding bill has been now reduced to EUR 115 and I really really really appreciate your help! You are so great! ;-) Another little bit to go, but it is looking really good. If you have never helped with a donation but got GREAT benefit from the Dublin Event Guide over the years, NOW might be the best time to help! ;-) I will appreciate every cent! :-)
If you are a great and helpful person, you can help via PayPal here or if you don’t like PayPal too much you can also go to GoFundMe here. THANK YOU!!
And don’t forget that you can also help without spending a cent of your own money, if you buy through the advertisement links that are in the Dublin Event Guide or that are on the Dublin Event Guide Shopping Page at www.DublinEventGuide.com/shop If you want to buy from Groupon or LivingSocial or Amazon or Bookdepository or eBay or Asos or PrettyLittleThing or SportsDirect, just go to that website and click on the relevant link and it will bring you to the right place. The company you buy from will take 5-8% out of their profit (depending on the company) and will reward the Dublin Event Guide for promoting that company. But importantly you don’t pay more! Here are the links: www.dublineventguide.com/shop Thanks for using this page!
++++++++
The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Not many subscribers are prepared (or able) to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 240 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for web hosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help.
You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.
And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 80,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.
+++++++++++
And here is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 240 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
This week’s Feel Good Slot is for everyone who would like to achieve something new or different, or to be or become someone else, or just in general to NOT stand still and get somewhere in life. It has been expressed in lots of different ways, but Indian Poet Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) found a great comparison or metaphor:
You can’t cross the sea merely by standing and staring at the water. – Rabindranath Tagore
By the way, since this is the second last Dublin Event Guide, there might be a few people that like and would like to continue to get selected Feel Good Slot quotes and video clips and oaccasionally some motivational other posts. I do regularly get mails from people that tell me they read the Dublin Event Guide mainly for the Feel Good Slot. :-O If you want to continue getting posts from me every now and then that deal with motivation, life, feeling good etc, then send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject FEEL GOOD. I have not made a plan for a new newsletter ;-) , BUT I come across cool and interesting quotes and content regularly and I could easily just share it with you if you are interested.

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
Last week Mark G, Brendan R, Clodagh O’C, Helen C, Elaine M, Aoife G, Bilingual Cultural Services and Ann M were so great to help with a very much needed donation. Thanks! Every cent counts and without all these contributions the Dublin Event Guide won’t continue.
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is EUR 240 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills. Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This week I can only say two words: Christmas Markets! If you don’t go this week and next week, Christmas is over! So, indulge in Christmas Markets NOW! :-)

Cinderella Panto – Ticket Competition
Sunday 06 January – 14:30 Liberty Hall Theatre, 1 Eden Quay, Dublin 1
Tempus Productions is bringing the Cinderella Panto to the Liberty Hall Theatre. There will be 12 performances from 19 December until 06 January and the list of all performances is below. Tickets will be available on www.libertypanto.com and they are prices at EUR 19.50.
And this is what the organisers told me: “It’s that time of year. Dublin City is rammed, there are fewer choccies left in your advent calendar, and you’ve already lost your granny twice in Arnotts. But, this Christmas, the Liberty Hall Theatre has got its tinsel back. Yep, there’s a panto coming to the Liberty Hall Theatre Dublin 2018. It’s ‘Cinderella’. Praise be to Santa! Pantomime factory Tempus Productions has splashed out. Their production pulls out all the stops, boasting a star-studded cast this year including John Lovett (Red Rock, The Tudors & Panto Dame extraordinaire) and Eric Lalor (Comedian & Fair City Bad Guy) But is this a triumphant return to the North-side of the Liffey to one of the best venues in town? You’ll have to wait and see. Join us this year to see if poor old Cinders will get to the ball. That’s if her two ugly stepsisters Whitney & Britney are not up to their usual tricks. But, with the help of her faithful friend Buttons and the Magical Fairy G, it can only be fantastic. What more could a panto ask for I hear you say? Well get your tickets soon for the Fairy Godmother of all pantomimes to find out! “Where will we go?…to the Liberty Panto! See you there!!!”
And for two Dublin Event Guide reader families there is a super price available: Each winner gets 2 Adult + 2 Children tickets for the performance on Sunday 06 January at 14:30.
To enter the competition, send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail and with CINDERELLA in the subject line. Your entry has to be with me by 15:00 on 19 December. The winner will be announced on the Dublin Event Guide Facebook page.

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon LivingSocial
Or when you buy from eBay or you want to buy holidays or clothes or anything else, check first
www.dublineventguide.com/shop
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm or www.GoFundMe.com/DublinEventGuide

Dublin Event Guide retirement!
I will leave that message here, because it seems that not everyone has seen it yet. :-O
I hope you saw the mail that I sent to you last week, in which I announced that after 11.5 years and 600 editions, I will retire the Dublin Event Guide on 14 December. It hasn’t been an easy decision, but it is the right decision. I have spent many many hours and literally sleepless nights on it and it was a great experience and a great time. But now it is time to focus on other things.
I will not terminate the Dublin Event Guide, only retire it. That means that you will still hear from me and I will still tell you about events, but not through a weekly e-mail or daily Facebook messages anymore, instead it will be less scheduled and only when big(is) events are coming up. But I won’t go away and I hope you will stick around as well. ;-)
For some more details, go to mailchi.mp/dublineventguide/dublin-event-guide-important-news to find my announcement and explanation.

Online Christmas Shopping for the future of the Dublin Event Guide
Before Christmas most of us do some amount of online shopping and if you could help a good cause without spending a cent more, most of us would be happy to do that, right?
The Dublin Event Guide is retiring in its current form, but there will be a future in a scaled down version with less frequent mails and I plan to fund that purely from my pocket with a bit of help from you if you use ads that I have on the Dublin Event Guide website and on the Dublin Event Guide Shopping site at www.dublineventguide/shop So if you do your Christmas Shopping online, for example with Amazon or Book Depository or Groupon or Living Social or eBay or Asos or PrettyLittleThing or Schuh or AllBeauty, go to www,dublineventguide.com/shop and click on the ads there before you do your shopping.
The online shops will pay a small referral reward to the Dublin Event Guide, which funds the future after 14 December! Thanks!!!!

Dublin Christmasmarkets Website
To help you and your friends and families find your way around the Christmas Markets in Dublin, I created a few years ago a website at www.DublinChristmasMarkets.com and this website is again updated for 2018, so you can check out there what markets are coming up in the run up to Christmas.
You might know that I am a bit of a Christmas Market purist and am extremely disappointed with what Dublin manages to put together. With that in mind, I would say that most (if not all) of the “Christmas Markets” on that list are actually “Markets at Christmas”, but not real Christmas Markets. But decide for yourself!
And if you wonder which markets I would recommend: I have heard good things about Winterval in Waterford but was never there myself. So the only market that I would definitely recommend is the one in Belfast! :-O

Christmas FM is back!
Christmas FM returned to the airwaves last Wednesday!
The popular Christmas radio station that broadcasts from the Ballsbridge Hotel throughout the whole pre-Christmas time is back for the 11th year. It started on 28 November and will be broadcasting until 27 December.
Christmas FM has raised almost EUR 1.5million for a range of charities over these 11 years and this year they will be raising awareness and funds for Temple Street Children’s Hospital. The radio station’s goal is to raise over EUR 200,000.
The station is available online at www.christmasfm.com and also on your radio on frequency 105.2FM in Dublin.

The former “Opportunities” section is now the place where the weekly event map from Energia was featured, but this map is now going into hibernation until spring.
|
Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/whats-on/events-in-leinster-dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Point Village, East Wall Road, Dublin 1
The Dublin Flea Christmas Market is back and this year it will run over two weekends and again from Thursday until Sunday. It will happen again at the Point Village, in the same building where the cinema is. Admission is free and the opening hours are Thurs + Fri 13:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 11:00-18:00. Moving Crib in St. Martin Apostolate
11:00 – 18:00, Sat 08 Dec
St. Martin Apostolate, 42 Parnell Square West, Dublin 1
The Moving Crib of the St. Martin Apostolate is a whole basement full of handcrafted figures in front of painted backgrounds of nativity related scenes. There are 14 scenes, beginning with Adam and Eve and finishing with Christmas. Nearly all figures are moving and this historic crib, which was created in 1956, still fascinates children and even adults.
I was there two years ago and it is indeed fascinating. It won’t blow you away, but your kids will probably be a lot more impressed than you!! ;-)
Admission is free, but for the upkeep of the crib, a donation is very much appreciated.
The opening times are 27 Nov-06 January: 11:00-18:00. (Closed on 25+26 Dec and 01 Jan)

Inti macy – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 08 Dec
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “Inti macy” and it will run from 19 October until 24 February. (You probably see that there is a space in the middle of the exhibition title. That is to trick any spam filter that doesn’t like too private or personal words. In the following text I will use “Personal Connection” as a replacement title.)
The exhibition is looking at Personal Space and Personal Connection. What does it mean to be connected? And what really is connection? Can we connect virtually or does it have to be real?
Some of the most interesting exhibits are:
+ Companion Cat and Robot Flatmate + Hello Machine, a phone system for spontaneous conversations with strangers + Measure your Personal Space + A virtual reality system that allows visitors to experience the world through the eyes and body of another person.
The website below lists all exhibits and provides some explanation so that you can either before or after your visit check further details.
All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part/follow. Some of the exhibits need a bit more of an age-appropriate explanation for younger kids than others, but nearly everything can be simplified for kids.
I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.
The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.
Admission is free.

Inti macy – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sun 09 Dec

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 09 Dec
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.
There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Moving Crib in St. Martin Apostolate
11:00 – 18:00, Thu 13 Dec

Dublin Flea Christmas Market
13:00 – 20:00, Thu 13 Dec
Point Village, East Wall Road, Dublin 1
The Dublin Flea Christmas Market is back and this year it will run over two weekends and again from Thursday until Sunday. It will happen again at the Point Village, in the same building where the cinema is. Admission is free and the opening hours are Thurs + Fri 13:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 11:00-18:00. The two market weekends are 06-09 December and 13-16 December.
At each weekend there will be approx. 140 stalls at the market, but the second weekend will have DIFFERENT stalls than the first, so don’t just go on once weekend and think you are done. You have to come the second weekend as well. ;-)
This is the biggest Christmas Market in Dublin this year. It is an indoor market in a modern building, so not really comparable to the Christmas Markets I keep raving about (and which we don’t have in Ireland), but at least it is a “big market at Christmas”.
Parking is a problem in the area. There is a multistorey car park, but it is pricey and limited in space. So if possible come by LUAS.

11:00 – 18:00, Fri 14 Dec

Dublin Flea Christmas Market
13:00 – 20:00, Fri 14 Dec

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that
Less customers in Grafton Street due to LUAS
This is interesting! I had never thought of this or considered it, but after reading an article in the Irish Times about footfall in Grafton Street, I can see how it might make sense. Dublintown, the trader organisation for the City Centre, have identified that there was a drop in footfall by approx. 5.2% and they think the LUAS is the reason.
At first I thought: NONSENSE! The reduction in customer numbers if probably a general and global trend away from retail shops and towards online shopping. The prices retail shops charge are often to hideously high in comparison to online retailers that it really is difficult to keep shopping in the bricks & mortar shops.
But then I thought about how I would use the LUAS (if I could from where I live). If you come from the southern part of Dublin on the Green LUAS line and you work on the North side of the Liffey, then before the Cross City Luas was there, you would have left the LUAS at St. Stephen’s Green and then you would have had to walk from St. Stephen’s Green through Grafton Street to cross the Liffey to get to the Northside. Now, since the Cross City Luas is there, you change Luas trains at St. Stephen’s Green and then go across to the Northside in Luas, without ever putting a foot into Grafton Street.
Not much that can be done about it, but interesting how this new LUAS connection hurts businesses directly but very unintentionally. :-O
