Hi all!

So, this week I was flooded with e-mails after I sent the e-mail about the future of the Dublin Event Guide. Thanks for all your messages. I will reply to every single one of them, but it will take a few more days! This is edition No 596 and as I had promised, there will be Dublin Event Guides until we reach 600. So after today another 4 to come. :-)

[quads id=1]

You are a wonderful bunch of people! I expected that as soon as I tell you about the Dublin Event Retirement ALL donations will stop immediately, but that was not the case, instead MORE people than before were prepared to help to find the money so that I won’t have to end it with any debt. That brought the outstanding bill down to EUR 195. Thanks so much! There will be unfortunately a December bill, so in total I will have to find 195+240=435 in the next 4 weeks. If you have never helped with a donation but got GREAT benefit from the Dublin Event Guide over the years, NOW might be the best time to help! I will appreciate every cent! :-)

If you are a great and helpful person, you can help via PayPal here or if you don’t like PayPal too much you can also go to GoFundMe here. THANK YOU!!

And don’t forget that you can also help without spending a cent of your own money, if you buy through the advertisement links that are in the Dublin Event Guide or that are on the Dublin Event Guide Shopping Page at www.DublinEventGuide.com/shop If you want to buy from Groupon or LivingSocial or Amazon or Bookdepository or eBay or Asos or PrettyLittleThing or SportsDirect, just go to that website and click on the relevant link and it will bring you to the right place. The company you buy from will take 5-8% out of their profit (depending on the company) and will reward the Dublin Event Guide for promoting that company. But importantly you don’t pay more! Here are the links: www.dublineventguide.com/shop Thanks for using this page!

++++++++

The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Not many subscribers are prepared (or able) to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 240 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for web hosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help.

You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.

And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 80,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.

+++++++++++

And here is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime.
This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 240 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

This week’s Feel Good Slot quote is also last week’s Feel Good Slot quote, but I will leave it here for another week because of the new developments regarding the Dublin Event Guide. I hope that’s ok with you! ;-)

Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end. – Seneca.

Everything that has started will come to an end at SOME point after the start, Without ends, there won’t be any new beginnings, though! So we should endorse the ends as new opportunities.

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

Last week Gordon C, Fiona C, Melanie B, Damien B, Joan S, Christine E, Rebecca T, Wojtek S, Anita W, Comet Records, Darren, Nicola W were so great to help with a very much needed donation. Thanks! Every cent counts and without all these contributions the Dublin Event Guide won’t continue.

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is EUR 240 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

There are a few more niche events this week. The Ska & Reggae Festival in Bray this weekend and then next week the Dublin Startup Weekend is happening and – unbelievably – the first Christmas Craft market is happening this weekend! :-O

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

Or when you buy from eBay or you want to buy holidays or clothes or anything else, check first

www.dublineventguide.com/shop

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm or www.GoFundMe.com/DublinEventGuide

Dublin Event Guide retirement!

I hope you saw the mail that I sent to you during the week in which I announced that after 11.5 years and 600 editions, I will retire the Dublin Event Guide on 14 December. It hasn’t been an easy decision, but it is the right decision. I have spent many many hours and literally sleepless nights on it and it was a great experience and a great time. But now it is time to focus on other things.

I will not terminate the Dublin Event Guide, only retire it. That means that you will still hear from me and I will still tell you about events, but not through a weekly e-mail or daily Facebook messages anymore, instead it will be less scheduled and only when big(is) events are coming up. But I won’t go away and I hope you will stick around as well. ;-)

For some more details, check your OInbox for the mail from me OR drop me a mail if you can’t find it OR go to the Facebook Page and find the announcement at the top of the Page there.

Help the Dublin Event Guide by buying via these links:

THANKS!!!

Opportunities

The former “Opportunities” section is now the place where the weekly event map from Energia was featured, but this map is now going into hibernation until spring.

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/whats-on/events-in-leinster-dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

A highlight of the exhibition is an exquisite collection of ten Fabergé-style eggs.

InFlux shows the results of two years of training in all aspects of ceramics skills and design at DCCoI’s Centre of Excellence in Ceramics which is based in Thomastown, Co. In general terms, the word ‘flux’ also means continuous change and movement and can be applied to the development of ideas and designs and best describes the diversity of this work.

St. James’ Parochial Hall, 5-6 Echlin Street, Kilmainham 8, Dublin

17 November and already a Christmas Market? That is definitely a bit shocking!

It seems the “amazing lineup of talented crafters from Kilmainham” want to sell their works before anybody else can.

They are running their Craft Fair on 17/18/24/25 November and on 01/02 December (11:00-18:00).

They forgot to tell us if admission is free (How can organisers forget to mention that!?!?!?), but I assume there is no admission charge.

Inti macy – Science Gallery Exhibition

12:00 – 18:00, Sat 17 Nov

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “Inti macy” and it will run from 19 October until 24 February. (You probably see that there is a space in the middle of the exhibition title. That is to trick any spam filter that doesn’t like too private or personal words. In the following text I will use “Personal Connection” as a replacement title.)

The exhibition is looking at Personal Space and Personal Connection. What does it mean to be connected? And what really is connection? Can we connect virtually or does it have to be real?

Some of the most interesting exhibits are:

+ Companion Cat and Robot Flatmate
+ Hello Machine, a phone system for spontaneous conversations with strangers
+ Measure your Personal Space
+ A virtual reality system that allows visitors to experience the world through the eyes and body of another person.

The website below lists all exhibits and provides some explanation so that you can either before or after your visit check further details.

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part/follow. Some of the exhibits need a bit more of an age-appropriate explanation for younger kids than others, but nearly everything can be simplified for kids.

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

Admission is free.

Magazine Fort – Guided Tour

10:00, Sun 18 Nov

Magazine Fort, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park was for a long time completely neglected, but it is hugely rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 30 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.

Finally since 2016, guided tours are provided and this year from April until end of October there will be three tours every Sunday at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:00. Only 20 places are available on each tour and if there is a big event in Phoenix Park the tour will be cancelled.

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

Inti macy – Science Gallery Exhibition

12:00 – 18:00, Sun 18 Nov

The event is a discussion about how to have close human contact while there are phyiscal restraints in the form of a diasbility or illness.

Through their words and images, they tell the stories of three famous stallions, founding fathers of the thoroughbred horse as we know it today. ‘Blood Horses’, both exhibition and beautiful limited-edition book, looks at the relationship between humans and horses, the effect they have on our lives, and our love for these magnificent creatures.

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that

Deranged opinions of legal profession in Ireland! – R ape case in Cork

I have complained many times over the last few years about nonsensical judgements by Irish judges that let criminals off with super low or with no penalties in cases where we, the public feel that serious misjustice has been done.

So many judges in Ireland clearly can not be trusted with the law, which is a shocking realisation in itself. But we would hope that other part of the justice system are at least more trustworthy and show a better understanding of right and wrong.

A trial at Cork Circuit Criminal Court, however, showed that the next level down, i.e. the people that are not (yet) judges are as deranged in their opinions as many judges.

At that trial in Cork a 27 year old man was accused of rap ing a 17 year old girl in a laneway (Apologies for the misspelling of the word “rap ing” in this sentence and this whole article, but many spam checkers do react very tetchy to the use of certain words even in a serious discussion.)

In her closing words, the senior counsel for the defence, Elizabeth O’Connell SC said:
“Does the evidence out-rule the possibility that she was attracted to the defendant and was open to meeting someone and being with someone? You have to look at the way she was dressed. She was wearing a thong with a lace front.” :-O

The job of a defence lawyer is to achieve an acquittal of the accused and they do whatever it takes, even defending someone who is clearly guilty. We don’t know if the accused in this case was guilty or not. He claims that she consented, she says she didn’t. BUT he was acquitted in court by a jury of eight men and four women and it could well be that the outrageousness of “wearing a thong with lace front” contributed to that acquittal.

First of all, how can the clothing that a woman is wearing justify a ra pe? That is totally ridiculous! Some men might not have much of a brain, others are happy to switch it off, but NO man should EVER be allowed to use the defence that he couldn’t stop himself after he saw a woman dressed in a certain way.

Secondly, how does it matter what clothing is worn UNDERNEATH the normal (outer) clothing? Unless I run around showing everyone my under wear, it is MY decision what I wear underneath and NOBODY has the right to assume that I am inviting any sort of behaviour based on my choice of under garment!

But it is the third thing that shocks me most! This stupid argument about the “thong with a lace front” justifying what might have been ra pe was not raised by an old, crusty, misogynistic, out-of-touch-with-life, male solicitor/barrister. No, it was used by a middle aged FEMALE barrister and I can only assume that she never wore a “thong with a lace front” in her life! (Her picture is in this article, but has been removed by the Law Library it seems where it was originally found.) If women think that another woman’s clothing choice justifies any sort of behaviour by a man, then what chance do young women that were attacked have in this country?

Even more oddly, though, the FEMALE judge in the court did not stop that misguided defence strategy, but seemingly accepted the victim blaming based on her choice of clothing.

The Irish legal system is in a bad state if the professionals in it have no better understanding of right and wrong!!

The Irish Examiner brought this court case to our attention.
