Hi all!
This week things didn’t go according to plan and I apologise for it! I struggled with three technical problems during my compilation time for the Dublin Event Guide and that slowed me down soo much. In addition I was not able to prepare during the week as I normally do: another delay! And then it is National Heritage Week! A great event, but there are 350 events in Dublin and while I hadn’t planned to list them all, even the filtering and selection of SOME took AGES.
[quads id=1]
So I reluctantly had to post the events on Facebook before sending this e-mail out. Hopefully you saw them there. And there are plenty of events on Sunday and the rest of the week to make up for the late delivery today. Apologies!
The August now stands at EUR 110. We are more than half way through the month and we are still a junk away from zero, so please don’t stop helping. If YOU can support the Dublin Event Guide, please do so! I am suggesting a very fair EUR 12 for the year, that’s just 23 cent per Dublin Event Guide Edition or just about 2 pints for 52 (!) editions of the Dublin Event Guide! That’s not much if you think about how much value the Dublin Event Guide brings you every week! Higher and lower donations are also appreciated! Every Euro counts!
If you are a great and helpful person, you can help via PayPal here or if you don’t like PayPal too much you can also go to GoFundMe here. THANK YOU!!
And don’t forget that you can also help without spending a cent of your own money, if you buy through the advertisement links that are in the Dublin Event Guide or that are on the Dublin Event Guide Shopping Page at www.DublinEventGuide.com/shop If you want to buy from Groupon or LivingSocial or Amazon or Bookdepository or eBay or Asos or PrettyLittleThing or SportsDirect, just go to that website and click on the relevant link and it will bring you to the right place. The company you buy from will take 5-8% out of their profit (depending on the company) and will reward the Dublin Event Guide for promoting that company. But importantly you don’t pay more! Here are the links: www.dublineventguide.com/shop Thanks for using this page!
++++++++
The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Not many subscribers are prepared (or able) to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 240 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for web hosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help.
You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.
And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 75,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.
+++++++++++
And here is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 240 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
This week’s Feel Good Slot is a quote by entrepreneur Joubert Botha. He makes an important point: We often don’t believe in ourselves or at least don’t believe enough!! And if we don’t believe then how can we expect other people to believe? So his good advise is:
Believe in yourself so strongly that the world can’t help but believe in you too. – Joubert Botha
What can you do this week to show the world that you believe in you?

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
Last week Mark G, Tadhg C, Scott P and Joan S were so great to help with a very much needed donation. Thanks! Every cent counts and without all these contributions the Dublin Event Guide won’t continue.
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is EUR 240 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills. Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This week there is the National Heritage Week and the Dublin Event Guide contains nearly 220 events. Mad! You have to choose this week yourself. I need to rush this Dublin Event Guide out. Sorry!

Release Your Voice – Singing Workshop – Ticket Competition – Winner
Saturday 18 August – 11:00-17:30 The Lab, Foley Street, Dublin 1
Professional Singer and Vocal Coach Joan Shields is running a full day workshop in singing techniques entitled “Release Your Voice”. This highly enjoyable and intensive workshop will show you how to get the most out of your voice. It is suitable for all styles of music from Popular to Operatic, Jazz, Traditional, Musical Theatre etc. and all levels of singer from beginner/non-singer to professional. It will also benefit public speakers and actors in their projection and delivery.
You will learn how to develop and gain control over your voice; extend your pitch -range, improve your timbre, intonation and power; sing in a healthy way for your voice; be a more versatile and expressive singer; communicate/interpret a song and perform with confidence. And you will have the opportunity to work individually with Joan on the song of your choice.
The fee for the full day of training is a very affordable EUR 70 and if you tell Joan at the time of booking that you found out about the course in the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events), you will even only pay EUR 60. – Book your place via 086-3844527 or via freeyourvoice@outlook.com now!
And if you enter this competition, then one person will even get the ticket for free! But don’t wait until the competition is decided. Instead just go ahead and book with Joan and if you are the lucky winner and you have booked already, you will get your money back. The reason why I am suggesting to book NOW is because there are limited places available on the course!
Lots of people entered the competition – as always – and the draw has been conducted. The lucky winner is Rachael Dowling! Congratulations! If you too want to “Release your Voice”, let me know via dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will see if I can convince Joan to run another competition when her next workshop comes up! ;-)

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon LivingSocial
Or when you buy from eBay or you want to buy holidays or clothes or anything else, check first
www.dublineventguide.com/shop
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm or www.GoFundMe.com/DublinEventGuide

Papal Visit and Mass in Phoenix Park & Croke Park
If you are not going to the biggest event in Ireland in the last 39 years, the Papal Mass in Phoenix Park, but you live in Dublin, I would strongly recommend that you avoid ALL areas that are in 5-8km radius around Phoenix Park on Sunday. Up to 500,000 people are expected in Dublin and they ALL have to somehow get to Phoenix Park. Walks of between 2 and 7 km are required to reach the location for the mass, but since there will be a huge amount of road closures and also a take over of all public transport resources (trains & busses) to bring people to Dublin and then as close as feasible to Phoenix Park and Croke Park, I would really suggest you stay at home on Saturday and even more so on Sunday.
There will be 52 road closures on Saturday in Dublin and 86 on Sunday, so renew your Netflix subscription, get a good book or restart that knitting project, make sure you have enough food and drink at home and then lock yourself in!
The Irish Times gives some warnings about the traffic situation including the list of closed streets in their article here. Don’t think that the streets will be just closed for a little while! On Sunday Dublin will be closed from 06:00-23:00!! :-O
And here is another interesting article about the logistics: www.rte.ie/news/the-pope-in-ireland/2018/0814/985058-logistics-of-popes-visit/ The article says that 25,000 slices of sliced pan are expected to be used for sandwiches and 31,000 litres of milk for your tea! Tea and sandwiches! I see, we have made huge culinary steps forward since 1979! :-O
The long-term forecast at the moment predicts a cloudy day with some sun on both Saturday and Sunday, but it is quite cold at 16 degrees!

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/whats-on/events-in-leinster-dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Devonian Plant Fossils: A window into the past
02-24 August (10:00-17:00)
National Botanic Gardens, 300 Botanic Road, Glasnevin, Dublin 9
This is a joint exhibition between the National Botanic Gardens of Ireland, the Geological Survey Ireland and the Natural History Museum and it will show-case the 360 million year old fossils from Kiltorcan Quarry, Co. Kilkenny.
Kiltorcan is internationally known for its rich assemblage of excavated fossils but this is their first significant public display. The fossils provide a glimpse into the plant world at the end of the Devonian Period. The first significant adaptive radiation of life on dry land occurred during the Devonian Period. Free-sporing vascular plants began to spread across dry land, forming extensive forests which covered the continents. By the middle of the Devonian, several groups of plants had evolved leaves and true roots, and by the end of the period the first seed-bearing plants appeared.
The exhibition can be viewed daily in the Gallery, Education & Visitor Centre. Admission is free.

National Heritage Week 2018
09:00, Sat 18 Aug
Dublin (various locations)
From 18 August until 26 August the National Heritage Week 2018 will take place in Ireland. The intention is to create awareness and to educate about heritage in Ireland trough walks, talks, performances, exhibitions and workshops.
In Dublin City there will be about 210 events, in Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown about 60, in South County Dublin about 55 and in Fingal (North County Dublin) about 30. (It will never makes sense in my head why these four areas are separated in search engines for evens like this. With the small size of Dublin this is totally unnecessary!)
Many events are repeated numerous times throughout the week and a large amount of events are free. Unfortunately, though you can’t filter out free events. (Another wrong decision!).
Even with these little hiccups on the website, the Heritage Week is a brilliant event and there is something on the list for everyone. I will mention a number of Heritage Week events in separately in this Dublin Event Guide, but with 350 events in Dublin, you can imagine that I will not be able to mention all, but will just scratch the surface. So you will have to search for yourself here:
www.heritageweek.ie/whats-on/events
One of the slightly quirkier events that runs for the whole week is the “Totally Terrific Tomato Festival” in the National Botanic Gardens. There will be exhibition of tomato cultivars and their relatives (tobacco, potatoes, chillies, petunias and even deadly nightshade) and there will be a series of talks, Tomato Tales, with tomato addict Nicky Kyle, and Director of the Gardens Matthew Jebb.

National Heritage Week 2018
09:00, Sun 19 Aug

Magazine Fort – Guided Tour
10:00, Sun 19 Aug
Magazine Fort, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park was for a long time completely neglected, but it is hugely rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.
In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.
Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 30 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.
Finally since 2016, guided tours are provided and this year from April until end of October there will be three tours every Sunday at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:00. Only 20 places are available on each tour and if there is a big event in Phoenix Park the tour will be cancelled.
Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.
There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Josh Johnstone – Singer/Songwriter
20:00, Sun 19 Aug
The Bowery, 196 Rathmines Road Lower, Rathmines, Dublin 6
Josh Johnstone is a West Australian singer/songwriter and he will perform a gig in the Bowery on his European Tour.
There is no admission price mentioned, but it also doesn’t say if admission is free. Normally, I just exclude events that can’t tell us what the story is. But in this case I have some reason to believe that the gig might be free.

National Heritage Week 2018
09:00, Mon 20 Aug

International Bar Jazz Night
21:30, Thu 23 Aug
The International Bar, 23 Wicklow Street, Dublin 2
Every Tuesday and Thursday the International Bar invites to a Jazz night in the Lounge.
Groups led by Cote Calmet, Sean Maynard Smith, Dominic Mullan, Paddy Groenland, Georgia Cusack & Alex Mathias are performing regularly with occasional guest players, but there are also other bands from all over.
Admission is free, with a suggested donation of EUR 5. The website clearly says that there is no entry fee, but – and that makes a lot of sense – that your donations are very much appreciated (Musicians need to pay for rent and food too!) Be generous after the gig if you liked it, but if someone wants to charge an admission charge, please point out that the “rules” as described on their website are like I have explained.

National Heritage Week 2018
09:00, Fri 24 Aug

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!
Scandalous Church!
It is less than a week now until the Pope will be in Dublin and up to 500,000 people from all over Ireland will assemble in Phoenix Park for a mass (which seems to me far above the number of normal weekly mass goers, but that’s only an unimportant side observation).
It will probably be the biggest event in Dublin in my lifetime and in addition it is free, but I have decided that I will not go to Phoenix Park. I would have access to tickets and I even could have sang in a humongous 5000 people big choir that sings at the Phoenix Park Mass or in a 1000 people strong choir in Croke Park, but I will stay at home instead.
It is not the Pope that gets me to stay away, I actually think he is one of the most progressive Popes (if these two words “progressive” and “Pope” are even compatible) that ever was in that job. But I also think that he is heading a rotten organisation that refuses to see its own rottenness.
I am raised catholic, I would call myself somewhere between “a la carte” catholic and “spiritual” (whatever that means!) and even go to mass regularly because I am involved with a Gospel Choir, so I am definitely not a church hater. I even think that the community that a grass roots church provides is a positive thing, but so is a community that a sports club or music club or even an atheist group provides.
But the thing that gets me really upset and annoyed is when there is hypocrisy.
300 priests in Pennsylvania abusing thousands of kids and a few years ago the scandal in Boston and all the cover ups and Ireland had its own scandalous Church. How can these animals look in a mirror?
I know plenty of great and caring priests and nuns and I know that not everyone is like that, BUT an organisation that can have that level of horrible behaviour that even condones or at least covers it up is rotten to the core and should be broken up!
