NSW Public Schools Symphony Orchestra & Choir – Ticket Competition

The Helix, DCU, Collins Avenue, Glasnevin, Dublin 9
On 28 January the NSW Public Schools Symphony Orchestra & Choir will perform a concert in the Mahony Hall of the Helix as a final concert of their UK & Ireland concert tour. They will perform works from Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Whitacre, Whitwell and Riebl.
The orchestra has 69 musicians and the choir 42 singers with an average age of 16 years. Together with the Australian orchestra and choir, the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland, the Ossia Youth Choir and the Belvedere College Chamber Choir will perform.
Admission is EUR 5 and can be bought via the Helix website here.

The Night of Ideas – Premiere Screening and Discussion – Ticket Competition

The French Embassy, the Institut Français Paris and the IFI are presenting the first “Night of Ideas” in Ireland, a worldwide event that celebrates the stream of ideas between countries, cultures, topics and generations.
The event will start with the Irish premiere screening of the documentary “The Russian Revolution Through its Films (L’utopie des images de la Révolution russe)” selected at the 2017 Mostra of Venice with director Emmanuel Hamon and scripwriter Thomas Cheysson in attendance. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion on the Power of images featuring director Emmanuel Hamon, screenwriter Thomas Cheysson, Dr Ailise Bulfin of UCD and Donald Clarke of the Irish Times.
The film will be screened in French with English subtitles, the discussion is in English.
Tickets are EUR 11 and can be bought here.

New Ryanair hand luggage rules come into effect!
This Monday (15 January) the new Ryanair hand luggage rules come into effect that were originally announced for September and were then postponed until this week.
The new rules say that from this week you are only allowed to bring a very small (Laptop-sized) bag on board unless you pay for priority boarding. If you do pay for priority boarding you are allowed to bring a second carry-on bag (up to 10 kg) on board, if you don’t pay for priority boarding this second bag will be carried in the hold for free and has to be handed over at the baggage drop before you make it to security. So the second bag will be treated like a free checkin suitcase.
Ryanair says that the two-bag policy that they had for a while was causing boarding and flight delays, probably because people tried to bring huge rolly suitcases on board and there was not enough space on board. But Ryanair ignores the fact that all this was caused by their policy that tried to stop people from bringing check-in luggage. For years we were educated that we should bring our own bag to the plane so that Ryanair can save the cost for baggage handling. Now they are telling us that this slows down the process and oddly they will do the baggage handling for free.
But do you see what will happen next? In a few months (and it won’t be long), Ryanair will most likely introduce a fee for the checked in “hand luggage”. I would bet my last cent that the checkin bag won’t remain free for long. It is just free for the introduction of the rule as otherwise the uproar would be too big. Once people get their head around the new rule a charge of first EUR 10 and then probably EUR 20 for the “hand” luggage will be introduced.
And the next sneaky trick that I predict: The check in via smartphone app will soon cost money!

The bubble is back! Crazy apartment prices in Dublin!
This week an apartment advertisement on Daft was shared on Facebook. The ad confirms that the craziness regarding Dublin rents is back. Exactly 10 years after the crash, we are were we were before.
The apartment is a 3-bedroom apartment on Parnell Street and the rental price is a whopping EUR 3,800 per month. With such a mad price, it is not surprising that it is advertised to accommodate up to 8 people and the pictures show bunk beds in the two small bedrooms. But I would expect that the people who rent it will try to squeeze at least 10 people into it. :-O

Over the past three decades, the world of contemporary dance has evolved spectacularly in leaps and bounds through a multitude of different creative approaches to choreography. The Alliance Française Dublin in partnership with the Fondation Alliance Française will showcase in January and February an exploration of this universe of movement and its evolution in France since the 80s.
The exhibition was designed and coproduced by Centre National de la Danse and the Institut Français.

Jacob’s Biscuit Factory & Dublin: An Assorted History

The extensive Jacob Biscuit Factory Archive held at Dublin City Library and Archive is thge basis of this exhibition that explores all aspects of the factory’s twentieth century history and its impact on lives of Dubliners. On panels the history of the factory, the workers, the products it produced and its role in Irish life are described.
Find out the history of the Jacobs cream-cracker, who was the marketing genius to develop the concept of Jim Figgerty, and how did major national and international events from World Wars to 1916 Rising impact the business, customers and staff.
The exhibition is in the Vaults of Dublin City Hall and will run from December until March. It will be closed from 22 December until 03 January 2018.

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY – Science Gallery Exhibition

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “IN CASE OF EMERGENCY” and it will run from 12 October until 11 January. The exhibition looks at doomsday and emergency scenarios. How can we prepare for such a worst case situation? It is a very interesting exhibition that I recommend. Some exhibits need you to think/reflect a little, but that is a good thing! :-)
Exhibits are for example
+ 22 Doomsday Clocks that show how close we got to the end of the world in the period from 1945-2017
+ a series of drawings teaching basic skills for challenging situations
+ Pandemic Spreading patterns in a globalised world
+ Microbiome Ark (a small satellite that carries human microbiome on board to kickstart life on earth again after a disaster)
+ a selection of Manuals for Civilisation
The website below lists all exhibits and provides their explanation so that you can either before or after your visit check further details.
There is also a Situation Room where you can partake in a Catastrophe Citizen Assembly to decide on complex questions that could affect the survival of humanity. The Situation Room assembly will convene every hour. Check with the mediators how you can take part.
All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part/follow. For this exhibition, though, younger kids might need your help to understand some of the context.
I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.
The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

In this talk Dr Mark Faulkner from Trinity’s School of English, will discuss TCD MS 492: A Twelfth-Century Bede from Bury. MS 492 typifies the large, imposing copies of major Latin works with which monasteries filled their libraries after the Norman conquest of England in 1066.

Groups led by Cote Calmet, Sean Maynard Smith, Dominic Mullan, Paddy Groenland, Georgia Cusack & Alex Mathias are performing regularly with occasional guest players, but there are also other bands from all over.
Admission is free, with a suggested donation of EUR 5. The website clearly says that there is no entry fee, but – and that makes a lot of sense – that your donations are very much appreciated (Musicians need to pay for rent and food too!) Be generous after the gig if you liked it, but if someone wants to charge an admission charge, please point out that the “rules” as described on their website are like I have explained.

Dublin City Council: Are they all insane? – Clontarf Sea Wall
There are (too many!!) times when you have to question the sanity of the people that run Dublin City. Last week I wrote about the mess regarding College Green Plaza. Dublin City is definitely involved in that, but An Bord Pleanala was also a significant contributor to that mess.
This week it is getting worse. Much worse!
You might remember a big fight between Dublin City and locals in Clontarf about the flood protection wall that was built last year. The locals wanted to have a low walls so that their pretty views of the sea will not be disturbed and Dublin City banged their fist on the table and said: NO! The “No” was based on the expected flood levels and the Clontarf locals were the ones that appeared narrow minded and short sighted in that conflict. Dublin City went ahead and got the wall built and the locals had to accept.
Fast forward just little while to last Monday: In their January meeting, the Dublin City Councillors decided to LOWER the sea wall now by just 30cm for a cost of EUR 230k below the level that is the national flood level standard to …wait for it…. “improve the view for motorists”. Have you heard anything more bonkers from the shower of City Councillors? But that’s not all! After that it will cost another EUR 300k to beautify the shortened wall. And it is also expected that the wall will have to be raised again in a few years time.
The interesting thing is that Labour, the Green Party, some from Fine Gael and some from AAA-PBP were against the shortening of the wall, but the decision was 34 in favour and 21 against, 3 abstained. In the Council with 63 councillors there are 8 from Fine Gael, 8 from Labour, 6 from AAA-PBP and 3 from the Green party. That’s 25 who should have been against it (obviously the parties weren’t able to convince their own councillors).
And what parties are on the INSANE side of the house? It is Sinn Fein (16), Independents (11), Fianna Fail (9), Social Democrats (1) and Workers Party (1). Remember them when the next election comes along in 2019!
