Hi all!
Last weekend was mad! I worked on the Dublin Event Guide on Thursday night and Friday night without sleep. I had to be at some other job early on Saturday morning and time was tight, but I just managed to get the Dublin Event Guide out to you in time. In the evening, I was invited to a birthday and could not NOT go. I got back not too late, but I just crashed. I didn’t have a drop of alcohol, but I don’t know how I got into bed. I functioned perfectly the whole day, but the moment my brain got permission to switch off, it did that INSTANTLY. :-O
[quads id=1]
I would LOVE to think I have super-human features, but clearly I don’t! :-) And with more work coming up, it is time again to look for some helpers! If you are interested, please contact me. I can offer fame (well, a tiny bit! ;-) ) but unfortunately no fortune! Send an e-mail to dublineventguide AT gmail.com with subject HELPERS. Thank you!!
Update: Last week’s early delivery, is followed by a super late delivery this week. Apologies! Things did NOT go according to plans at all! I have updated the online channels and will send the e-mail asap. I DEFINITELY need some helpers!! :-O
The outstanding bill for January is down to EUR 113. There are only 10 days left this month, but it is achievable if YOU can help a bit! If you can afford it, it would be great if you could donate EUR 12 for the year, that’s just 23 cent per Dublin Event Guide Edition or just 2.5 pints per year! That’s not much if you think about how much value the Dublin Event Guide brings you every week! Higher and lower donations are also appreciated! Every Euro counts!
If you are a great and helpful person, you can help via PayPal here or if you don’t like PayPal too much and prefer to use your credit card go to GoFundMe here. THANK YOU!!
And don’t forget that you can also help without spending a cent of your own money, if you buy through the advertisement links that are in the Dublin Event Guide or that are on the Dublin Event Guide Shopping Page at www.DublinEventGuide/shop If you want to buy from Groupon or LivingSocial or Amazon or Bookdepository or eBay or Asos or PrettyLittleThing or SportsDirect, just go to that website and click on the relevant link and it will bring you to the right place. The company you buy from will take 5-8% out of their profit (depending on the company) and will reward the Dublin Event Guide for promoting that company. But importantly you don’t pay more! Here are the links: www.dublineventguide.com/shop Thanks for using this page!
++++++++
The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Not many subscribers are prepared (or able) to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 240 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for web hosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help.
You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.
And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 73,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.
+++++++++++
And here is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 240 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
This week’s Feel Good Slot is from an unknown source and it refers to the size of our dreams which always are biogger than we think we can reach:
God gives us dreams a size too big so that we can grow into them.

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
This week Darragh D, Lorraine S, Helena S and Carija I were so great to help with a donation! Thanks a lot!! You and all the other donors throughout the year are keeping the Dublin Event Guide alive! Without you, there would be no Dublin Event Guide!!
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is EUR 240 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills. Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This weekend the Quidditch Cup in Trinity College sounds really interesting, but the weather doesn’t look inviting at all and it seems as if the rest of the weekend will be like that. So maybe it is more indoor events for today? Science Gallery, National Museums, Galleries? There is plenty to do.

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon LivingSocial
Or when you buy from eBay or you want to buy holidays or clothes or anything else, check first
www.dublineventguide.com/shop
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm or www.GoFundMe.com/DublinEventGuide

Dealz to add clothes “sub-shops”
The discount shop chain Dealz, which is the Irish branch of the British Poundland, has announced that they will add a cheap (they might have used another word! ;-) ) clothes line to their products and will put concession outlets in 30 Dealz stores. The clothes are EUR 5 or less and are consequently competing with a price point that is Penneys’ battle ground, but Dealz claims that they don’t want to compete with Penneys.
I like Dealz and regularly buy stuff there (e.g. stationary, batteries, phone charger cables etc), but I am not impressed with this new addition, because it will probably use up a lot of space in the shops and that means the other products will have to reduced. So very selfishly, I would vote against another discount clothes line, what’s your opinion?
Here are some more details: www.thejournal.ie/dealz-fashion-brand-2-3803115-Jan2018/

Storm names and Weather Panic – the hilarious side!
It seems that for the last 2-3 years, Met Eireann is a lot more “panick-y” than before. Suddenly we have Yellow, Orange and Red weather warnings where before it was just the usual daily forecast of “gale force winds”. And every time Met Eireann announces a warning – which seems to be twice a week or even more frequently – the newspapers and TV stations fall over each other in sensationalising the upcoming weather Armageddon.
Another new things it that storms are now named to make them more identifiable. Many of you might remember Hurricane Charley in 2004, which was one of the strongest hurricanes ever to the USA, causing $13bio of damage. Or Hurricane Katrina that destroyed New Orleans in 2005. But what about Storm Fionn, a bit of a blowier weather than usual?
It now has emerged that even the meteorologists don’t agree with each other and that one storm might have four different names when it passes through Europe. A hilarious fisticuffs exchange between meteorologists was reported in TheJournal.ie here: www.thejournal.ie/storm-fionn-row-3804345-Jan2018/
I particularly like the tweet by BBC Weather Presenter Jen Bartram on Thursday: “The storm that wasn’t #StormFionn and was equally not #StormGeorgina but was #StormDavid in France is now being called #StormFrederike in Germany. Confused?”

By buying through the ads in this Dublin Event Guide, you help the Dublin Event Guide! Thanks!
|
Say NO to Adblockers!
I use the Internet all the time and know how annoying advertisment can be. But I also spend close to 35 hours every week on this Dublin Event Guide where getting donations is hard work and where it would be sooooo much easier if you just clicked on the links in this Dublin Event Guide when you buy products or services. You are buying anyway and it doesn’t cost you any extra, so it would be cool to help the Dublin Event Guide.
BUT this plan ONLY work if you don’t use adblockers when you look at the Dublin Event Guide.
So, please, give ads a chance HERE. Free services are NEVER free, but they are ad funded. And if you don’t help funding them then soon they won’t be free anymore.

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Humans of Dublin by Peter Varga
08 January – 31 March
dlr LexIcon Library, Haigh Terrace, Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin
An exhibition of 60 photos by Peter Varga from his “Humans of Dublin” series will be on show in dlr LexIcon from 08 January – 31 March 2018.
“Peter Varga was working in a Dublin café when he decided to follow his passion and dedicate himself to photography. Inspired by the success of the Humans of New York project, he began to walk the streets of Dublin interviewing and photographing those he met along the way. What he uncovered were the powerful stories that hide in plain sight as we rush about our busy lives, too busy to notice. So began the social media phenomenon that is Humans of Dublin whose social media pages have over 175,000 followers. There are tales of inspiration and joy and those of heartbreak and loss, all of human life is present in this remarkable portrait of a diverse and vibrant city.”

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 20 Jan
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “IN CASE OF EMERGENCY” and it will run from 12 October until 11 January. The exhibition looks at doomsday and emergency scenarios. How can we prepare for such a worst case situation? It is a very interesting exhibition that I recommend. Some exhibits need you to think/reflect a little, but that is a good thing! :-)
Exhibits are for example + 22 Doomsday Clocks that show how close we got to the end of the world in the period from 1945-2017 + a series of drawings teaching basic skills for challenging situations + Pandemic Spreading patterns in a globalised world + Microbiome Ark (a small satellite that carries human microbiome on board to kickstart life on earth again after a disaster) + a selection of Manuals for Civilisation The website below lists all exhibits and provides their explanation so that you can either before or after your visit check further details.
There is also a Situation Room where you can partake in a Catastrophe Citizen Assembly to decide on complex questions that could affect the survival of humanity. The Situation Room assembly will convene every hour. Check with the mediators how you can take part.
All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part/follow. For this exhibition, though, younger kids might need your help to understand some of the context.
I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.
The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.
Admission is free.

Utopia Dystopia: The Irish left and Soviet Russia, 1917-43 – Talk
18:30 – 20:00, Mon 22 Jan
Thomas Davis Theatre, Arts Building, Trinitiy College Dublin, Dublin 2
Emmet O’Connor will talk about the relationship of the Irish Left and Soviet Russia after the revolution in Russia.
Admission is free, but tickets are required via the link below.
“Immediately following the February 1917 revolution in Russia, Irish Labour identified with the Petrograd Soviet because it opposed the world war and supported the principle of national self-determination. Contact with the Bolsheviks was established after the October revolution and the Irish Labour delegates sided with the pro-Bolsheviks at the international socialist conference at Berne in February 1919. However, the foundation of the Comintern, and the related emergence of a far-left in Ireland, led Labour to distance itself from Russia, and Irish links with the Bolsheviks became confined to communist, Larkinite, and republican groups. Moscow would shape the politics of Irish socialism and left republicanism in the 1920s and 1930s, and the history of its several, successive affiliates tells us much about centre-periphery relations within the Comintern and the character of Comintern influence on the smaller communist parties.”

Temple Bar Tradfest 2018
09:00, Wed 24 Jan
Temple Bar, Dublin 2
The Temple Bar Tradfest 2018 will take place from Wednesday 24 Jan until Sunday 28 Jan. There are non-free and free events taking place, but it is sooo difficult to identify from the website what is free that I gave up frustrated.
The general rule is that all headline events are not free. All “Frontline” events were free but are nearly all sold out (Interestingly, you had to pay EUR 2.99 to get a free ticket. :-O).
So what is left? The Music Trail is left! 15 pubs in Temple BAr take part and will have gigs during the Tradfest that are free. There is also an IMRO Conference on Thursday if you are a musician/in the music business. The Live at the Hub gigs during the day on Thuirsday and Friday are also free. The Family Concerts in the Printworks building at Dublin Castle are also free.
And if you have kids, look Throughout he list of Tradkids events and you will find a few free ones.
There is also a Tradfest App that might help you, but I didn’t get a chance to try it out.
As far as I can see, there is NO outdoor stage with music, maybe that is the Family Concert at Dublin Castle. I guess it is just too cold for playing instruments outdoor .

Who (or What) Creates a Work of Authorship – Talk
18:00 – 20:00, Thu 25 Jan
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
“Intelligent Machines: Who (or What) Creates a Work of Authorship?” is a talk in the Science Gallery by Prof Jane Ginsburg (Morton L. Janklow Professor of Literary and Artistic Property Law at Columbia University (School of Law)).
“In copyright law, an author is a human being who exercises subjective judgment in composing the work and who controls its execution. But challenges arise when the putative author partners with a machine or with natural forces to create a work of authorship. Do mechanical or natural interventions in the production of a work result in an insufficiently human-authored creation? The burgeoning of “computer generated works” – outputs of digital neural networks that have “taught themselves” to combine rules of literary, musical or artistic assembly after being “trained” on a database of pre-existing works – requires us to ask whether those outputs are “original works of authorship” entitled to copyright protection.”

The History of History Lecture – Talk
18:30, Thu 25 Jan
Dublin City Library and Archive, 138-144 Pearse Street, Dublin 2
Join Historian in Residence Maeve Casserly as she delves into the complex world of how we write history. What is historiography? What exactly is revisionism and why is it so controversial? Take a step outside your history book and test the theories of some of the important (and sometimes forgotten) historians in Irish and international history. Were they always in pursuit of the facts, or just great storytellers? Join Maeve as she argues for AND against the defence of History.
The topic this talk is “The History of History II: from Marxism to Fukuyama”
Admission is free,

Temple Bar Tradfest 2018
09:00, Fri 26 Jan

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!
No “This is ODD!” this week!?
During the week something happened that was somewhat unexpected in the context of the Eighth Amendment development when Michael Martin (Fianna Fail leader) and Leo Varadkar (Fine Gael leader and Taoiseach) both made their opinion known about their stance on the Eighth Amendment decision. There is something odd about that clause in the constitution and it could also be seen as odd that Micheal Martin made a U-turn about it. So I started writing about it for this section. No, not about the pros and cons of abortion, only about the pros and cons of that clause in the constitution.
But once I had it written, I decided not to publish it here. The discussion is just too polarised and too emotional to include it here, even if I am NOT taking sides on abortion but only look at the situation of the Eighth Amendment. So no This is Odd this week, cause I used up my allocated time for that article.
If you absolutely want to know what I wrote, you can find it on my personal blog, but if you feel very strongly about that clause in the constitution, remember, that I am a foreigner who has NO CLUE and just do NOT click on any link that might be in this paragraph.
